SOBS. I'm so glad that there are people out there writing books like these! This is the kind of book I'd like to write, but such a book would have to be done so tactfully, so carefully and kindly. De Anda easily succeeds. Suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer's is a slow decent, beginning with forgetting simple things, to forgetting people, to forgetting important things like turning the stove off, to finally forgetting some of the most important information out there--like where one lives.

This is an extraordinarily good, deeply moving, and lovingly depicted story how a boy's relationship with his beloved Abuelo changes as the symptoms of Abuelo's dementia worsen. What I love most about it is how Luis and his Mama and Papi find new and different ways to love Abuelo as his brain changes, but the love is always there.

WSP ACT on ALZ and grandchildren of grandparents with dementias
First and foremost, this is an outstanding and subtle, sublime educational picture book story. All the elements -- the characters, the events, the art -- come together beautifully to show a larger picture of how dementia changes circumstances and affects cognition, behaviors and responses, and (sometimes and to a degree) personality while the core essence of our loved ones with dementia tends to remain intact. I love that this book features a Latinx family and includes some words in Spanish (wit

Wow, this picture book did a great job with its difficult subject matter! It is written from the point of view of a boy who lives with his parents and grandfather/Abuelo. He spends time alone with Abuelo after school before his parents get home from work. Partway through the story readers discover that Abuelo has Alzheimer’s and that it is getting worse. The book doesn’t say as much, but the adult reader can infer. All the boy knows is that the activities he does with his Abuelo change as ...more

5 stars for the story ♡
These kinds of stories are important. So many people are going through this in one way or another. My grandmother only remembers me as my mom's baby (I am the youngest of three) and recently she has begun to forget her youngest daughter. It is rough and sometimes too sad, so this story touched my heart. "[She] will always be able to feel our love." ♡ ...more

I think this one is especially heartfelt because it describes the slow disintegration of a grandfather's mind and how it affects the family. It is not sentimentalist, nor is it too heavy for the faint of heart, but it strikes the right balance between realism and tragedy. I hope many read this to their children when the elderly of the family begin to show signs of dementia or alzheimers.

An elementary and up picture book about a grandfather struggling with alzheimer's. Nice progression on the journey of the grandfather's journey.
