Now, for the first time, there’s a comprehensive, science-based training manual written especially for young distance runners. Training for Young Distance Runners provides all the building blocks necessary to help runners ages 12 to 19 in cross-country and track reach their • Nutrition, physiology, psychology, and biomechanics of running • Training methods specific to stages of development • A step-by-step method for designing training programs Training for Young Distance Runners also includes sample workouts and training programs, 31 strength and flexibility exercises, and career profiles and training advice from nine elite runners.
'Training For Young Distance Runners' is the best book I've come across for anyone interested in coaching young runners. In fact, I wish a lot more coaches would read this book, because it covers more than just training the physical, but also talks about running technique, basic physiology, adaptations to training, different racing strategies and the importance of motivation. Overall the training philosophy is sound, as it breaks training down into different phases. It covered the technical aspects of running without getting too technical, touches on specific components of running and training, and also steps back and looks at the bigger picture in regards to planning ahead and assessing results.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. If/when the time comes for me to be in a position again to coach young runners, I will use this book as a constant resource.
Nothing I didn’t really already gather from my general experience in the sport. Very science heavy when I truly feel that it’s way closer to an art. Took much of the empirical stuff with a grain of salt.
I've been a cross country coach for 14 years and I think this is one of the best basic books for designing a training plan available. It's not overly technical and doesn't suggest overwhelming workouts or mileage, but rather really keeps in mind the needs (physical AND mental) of teenagers. It also covers a tremendous variety of different topics and is easy to follow throughout.
