I am a happily married mother of three (two boys and one girl). I live in a very small town in Alabama. Never lived anywhere else. I’ve been writing since my early twenties, but I couldn’t seem to finish a book. I’ve started self-publishing with the encouragement from my mom. Without her encouragement, I don’t think I would’ve done it. She always supported me and writing is something I’ve always enjoyed doing. As long as I enjoy it, I’ll continue to do it. I’ve learned already that I can’t please everyone. Not all reviews will be good, not all reviews will be bad. I’m the one that has to be happy with my work.

I get my inspiration from life experiences, movies, television, other authors, and music. Music is definitely a big influence on my writing. I can hear a song and it can inspire an entire book for me. I listen to it while I’m driving or before I start writing and it keeps me inspired. I like to put music in my books, even if it’s just one song the characters listen to or hear at some point. Sometimes music has gotten me through the really tough times in my life and that’s why it inspires me.

I like to write fast-paced, steamy romance reads. I like for my males to be alpha-males and my heroines to be strong, but both need to have one weakness- each other. I am an avid reader. I absolutely love romance books!

Gawd. Within the first 2 pages the MCs have both called a teacher a bitch. And maybe she is, but it doesn't make me think well of the MCs. Also, bitch was used more because this book is written in SUCH an elementary way. As in--elementary level writing. There's no subtlety, no style. It's not BAD writing per se. But neither is it good writing.

This was a really enjoyable read and we loved it ! The title for this story really fits but, I think that this couple wasted a lot of time without each other because if they had just communicated with the other parties involved things may have been different and then maybe not but, in doing so they were creating a whole lot of other problems for them and a whole a lot of distrust..

One of the things we loved most about this couple's story is that the challenges that a parent or parents can go through when their child is different and born with disabilities.Even though this is just a book of fiction I am quite sure a lot of parents have been in several similar situations depicted in this story and how small towns can be and just how cruel and mean people can be .Kaler and his daughter never deserved the towns scorn they were shown and its shame that their prejudices got in they way of what could have been a friendship filled with love and kindness. The story made us feel that it was all the more real and that you were living in the here and now."We just loved that about this story !"

I fell in love with Kaler's character right from the onset of the story as he was just an amazing parent and just loved his little girl with everything he had and not only that he put her needs first especially when he was making decisions that would effect their future and he was always thinking of her first and foremost. "Can you say heart melting?"

"We loved the sexy as sin single dad !"

Jenna the friend and school teacher we found to be totally awesome as she had this vibrant and amazing personality who tried to enjoy all life's little gifts and she has this amazing connection with Kaler's little girl Willow."We loved Willow she was such a precious sweetheart that brought sunshine into all their lives."

Kaler and Jenna's chemistry was super hot and by the way they could keep their hands off each other just proved it . lol

We loved this sweet romance between Kaler and Jenna and the rocky road they had to travel and that it was filled with ton of scorn, and tons of town gossip and a whole lot of town drama. We have to say that they busy bodies made us laugh a time or to but, overall the story was emotional and heartfelt and we loved it from beginning to end. Second chances are possible and if your brave and persistent enough to go after what you want you might just attained the life you should have had all along....."We are rooting for you Kaler!"

" a well crafted story "

A recommended read to all !

I recieved this arc in exchange for an honest review! Thank you JL Leslie and Enticing Journey for this opportunity. I really enjoyed this book a lot. The characters were really good. I felt like they were both relatable on some kind of level. Kaler and Jenna had a beautiful connection and great chemistry, even when they didn’t really want to have that. They were afraid of what people thought of their love. Jenna was a beautiful character, especially with Willow. Jenna was so sweet and cute. Kaler, of course was the hot “single” dad. He was amazing with Willow and adorable with Jenna. Willow was so ADORABLE!! Loved her character! I really liked how involved the side characters where in this story, that always helps with the set up to a great story!

Over the last couple of days a book in this series has been popping up on FB and GR. So I decided to start with one, and was surprised it opened at 100%. As I started to read I recognized the story.

It’s cute, Willow is adorable.

2 it’s not bad stars. Maybe closer to 3.

Small Town living is hard enough, where everyone knows everyone and drama and gossip run rampant. If you want to know everyone's business just attend church on Sunday to hear all the sinful whispers.

Unfortunately for Kaler Holt, he has always been a favorite topic of conversation. He married his middle school sweetheart, Brynn, at the tender age of 21 despite all the warnings that they wouldn't last and they were rushing into things. They became pregnant shortly after with their daughter, Willow, and the rumors flowed he was only doing the honorable thing because she was already pregnant which wasn't the case. Things only became harder for Kaler, when his wife let him to raise their child alone when she found out the picture perfect baby she had hoped for was born with down syndrome.

Being a single father and having the stresses that come with it was not an easy thing for Kaler . Even though he has a very hands on , supportive family willing to help in any way they can, he felt like he was doing it all alone.

Willow is now five years old and ready to start kindergarten which gives Kaler a slew of new concerns to worry about . Will she fit in? Will she be able to learn like the other children? Is he doing the right thing ?

Little does he know the new teacher is town is his ex wife's best friend, Jenna Winston, who was a staple in their tight knit group of friends that also included his two younger brothers, Tauren and Kipton.

Their teacher- parent relationship takes more of a personal turn when they start spending more time together, trying to rekindle their past friendship, which quickly becomes something more. Something complicated.

How will their friends and family feel about their blossoming relationship? What will their small minded, nosey neighbors think of how close they are becoming and all the time they spend together? What will they think of Jenna dating her best friends ex husband and one of her students father?

Something complicated is an engaging read that is not only a sizzling and sweet secret romance but tackles real life problems as well.

I love how J L Leslie isn't afraid to touch upon subjects other may see as taboo like postpartum depression and the challenges of parenting a child with special needs in a small town that is insensitive to thing's they are unfamiliar with and intolerant to thing's they can't understand.

I love how far Kaler has come throughout the book, from being a young single dad who feels like a failure, to the overprotective and proud father he has become who loves Willow unconditionally.

Jenna coming into the picture was like a breath of fresh air, helping Kaler shed some of his resentment by making him come alive and feel like a man again.

She is exactly what he needs. She's supportive of his decisions, protective of Willow and only has her best interests at heart, she is patient and understanding, but also easy going and laid-back.

"If something complicated is what it takes to make us happy, then we welcome the complication".

That line explains it all! Jenna and Kaler have such a natural chemistry, that makes them the perfect fit! Even though they have a complicated past, they are meant to be together. She is the ying to his yang, the love of his life, and the person he was always meant to be with.

"Something Complicated" is a heartfelt, small town, single father romance that gives you all the feels! It was sexy and scandalous but also had a lot of depth to it with real characters that you either loved or hated but that all played an integral part to making this a must read !

*I received this book free from the author.*

Kaler Holt married his highschool sweetheart, had a baby girl and is now a single father. Kaler feels that his ex wife left because she didn't want a daughter that has special needs. Kaler has made Willow his number one priority. Now that she is starting kindergarten the real struggle begins.

Jenna Winston grew up in this small town. Now that she landed the new kindergarten teacher job she knows that she is going to love her new career. When she learns Willow is going to be in her class she wonders why her best friend would ever leave her daughter behind.

Let me tell you I fell so hard for these characters. Willow is my absolute favorite. She has a presence about her that just makes her shine and everyone that is around her. I felt so many emotions as I read this book. Kaler is an absolute wonderful father to Willow. When his ex wife tries to come back into Willow’s life he has his guard up and Willow’s best interest in mind.

The overall problem with being from a small town means that everyone knows everything about you. When Kaler and Jenna finally realize they are more than friends and falling in love with each other they have to take on the wrath of the town. Everyone now knows that Jenna is sleeping with her best friends ex husband.

Something Complained is the first book in the Dirty Southern Secrets series from this author. I have been so excited waiting for this new series. J L. did not let me down with this one! I am so in love and cannot wait to read more!

The three Holt brothers, Brynn and Jenna all hung out in high school. Brynn and Kaler got engaged right after high school, married at 21 and had a baby daughter, Willow. Willow had Down syndrome and Brynn left after three months. Five years later, Jenna returns with a degree in teaching and becomes Willow’s teacher. Kaler and her become fast friends once again hanging out and doing things together. Things become complicated when both seem to want more but too many issues prevent that from happening. Small town gossip, her job, and Brynn. So, she starts dating around! The two are miserable without one another! Then, when they actually do decide to try and have something in secret, the town goes crazy! The school principal and other parents target Willow, Brynn decides she wants custody of Willow, one of Kaler’s brothers helps her see Willow behind Kaler’s back, Jenna has another boyfriend who acts weird and a host of other problems arise! What is going on with everyone? Why has everything seem to have gone crazy? Kaler is contemplating taking a job in another town…will he? So many problems but only one really matters…will Jenny and Kaler finally admit they love one another and be together? This is a small town sweet steamy romance between friends. The author did a great job expounding the issues that arise with a child with special needs and how prejudice can make things difficult for the child and parents. This was a really fast paced read I did not want to end! I loved the story, the characters and the backdrop! I cannot wait to read the next Holt brother’s story! I received this book as a gift and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This book has all the feels! I love the relationship between Kaler and Jenna because it's real! Nothing in life is perfect and this is demonstrated beautifully in struggles both Kaler and Jenna feel! I love how his family and brothers help him all they can!

Brynn is a character that I struggle with during the book. I will say that it is easier to empathise with her once everything is revealed.

Willow is such a sweetheart and her father will do anything for her. One of my favorite lines in the whole book is. "I may just be a mechanic with a high school education, but I will do anything for my little girl!"

I flip back an forth on an issue that comes up in this book and I am not quite sure how to feel about it. I wasn't dragged out of the story by it but it did rub me the wrong way a bit. I really hope we will get the rest of the brothers stories!!! I couldn't put this down!!!! Soooo goooood! #iwantmore

We always think when a young couple get married, they must be pregnant but that’s not always true. We think when you have a baby no matter if that child is healthy or not or born with a disability, we will love him or her no matter what and in the case of this book It’s not always the case. There is a reason why and it’s one many women face. Something Complicated is about a fathers undying love and stepping up to the plate when he’s all alone with just his family to back him up. Finding love in the last person you expected and the secrets we all keep.

Kaler thought he had the perfect life all planned out. Married to his high school sweetheart and a baby on the way. When Willow is born, they are faced with complications and its complications that Brynn can’t handle, and she flees. Five years later Kaler is adapting to life with Willow and trying so hard to give her normal child experiences despite it all. When Jenna his ex-wife’s best friend lands back in his town and is Willows teacher he finds himself drawn to her. He struggles with these feelings and thinks maybe this is wrong but why does it feel right?

Jenna finds herself back in the small town she lived in when she was a teen. She is Brynn’s best friend and friends with the Holt Brothers. She never really agreed with why Brynn left the way she did, but she stayed out of it. When the first day of school rolls around and Kaler walks through her door she feels the spark. She battles with herself because she feels she is breaking some sort of code. She tries to date other guys and keep it friendly with Kaler but it’s not easy.

I loved Kaler! The way he just stepped up and did what he did while the town biddies and judgmental gossips thought he was wrong for sticking it out with a child like Willow and that made me angry. I was legitimately angry. Jenna really struggled with her feelings and I totally understand why because no one wants to break the code of the best friends ex being off limits. I wanted to knock some sense into Brynn but once I learned why I forgave her. Willow was the cutest kid ever I totally loved her. This book has something for everyone from undying love, to mental health issues, to steamy time and dealing with judgement its got something for everyone.

Ms Leslie as done a great job of giving the reader a real sense of small town life with Something Complicated. Engaging characters with relatable dilemmas make for a charming, heartfelt storyline.

As Kaler knows all too well, trying to do right by your daughter, a little girl with Down’s Syndrome, as a single dad, whilst also holding down a full time job, is not easy. Add to that the realisation that you’re hopelessly attracted to your ex-wife’s best friend, and suddenly life becomes very complicated indeed. Mindful of his responsibilities, Kaler is determined to resist his attraction until it becomes impossible for him to ignore his feelings any longer.

Knowing the judgement they’ll receive from the local townsfolk and curtain twitchers if they act on those feelings, Kaler and Jenna decide that keeping their relationship under wraps, whilst letting everyone believe they’re just friends, is the way to go. Of course they’re not fooling anyone and I was just waiting for it to all blow up in their faces. The chemistry between these two as they fought their feelings for one another is strong. You get a real sense of them trying to do the right thing, whilst not really being honest to themselves, or anyone else for that matter. Their longing, the strain of trying to hide their feelings, and the guilt is a heavy burden. Whilst I didn’t always agree with their actions, I loved Kaler and Jenna together. There are certainly many ups and downs, judgmental attitudes and obstacles for this couple to overcome but I was rooting for them and for their love initially born from friendship. Willow too is a little sweetheart, a gorgeous little scene stealer, with her funny little habits, her love of her ipad, and her enthusiasm for fishing and pink tutu skirts!

The author also touches on certain mental health issues and these are dealt with in a sensitive not sensational way. Whilst some of the angst and situations felt slightly over the top on occasions, nevertheless I really enjoyed this steamy, witty, love story. There are many poignant moments too, which definitely brought tears to my eyes, adding another layer to this emotional whirlwind of a book.

There are so many things I loved about this book. I don't know where to start. Okay I'll start at what it's about. This is the story of Jenna and Kaler. They grew up together in a small town as friends. But what really connects them is Brynn, Jenna's best friend and Kaler's high school sweetheart, ex wife and mother to his daughter Willow. Brynn is also the woman who left her family behind because being a mother to a child with down syndrome was too much. Jenna becomes Willow's kindergarten teacher and Kaler and her reconnect. Kaler is an amazing single father. Hot single dad lovers get ready to swoon. He just wants his daughter to live a normal life. As if being a single father wasn't hard enough, being a single father to child with special needs and dealing with the woman who was supposed to be the love of his life abandoning them makes it that much harder. Jenna is a breath of fresh air. She doesn't treat Willow any different than the other children. She also knows how to really connect with her. No matter what the town say. This book really showed the ugly side of society to anyone that's different. I was so glad Jenna was there to be beside Kaler and stand up for Willow's right to be treated normal. That touched my heart so much. Jenna and Kaler try to deny the attraction to each other. They know the town will look down on them and Jenna doesn't want to betray her best friend Brynn, who is now trying to be in Wllow's life even though Kaler won't let her since she abandoned them. The chemistry between them is too strong to ignore. Sometimes in life we need to do what makes us happy. Even if others disapprove. We also get Brynn's story and get ready to full on hate her through the book but then understand her towards the end. This book had me feeling so many emotions. It's a beautifully told story. I couldn't put it down. And it's just the first book in the series. I seriously can't wait for more. This is a great story and get ready to fall head over heels for these characters.

What a very pleasant read by JL. By that I mean it was so different than what we usually read. This was a book that covered another topic that isn’t spoken or written about by authors much when they are writing books for us to read. This was about a little girl with Downs Syndrome and her father who was raising her by himself. Willow and Kaler were taking care of each other for five years, and she was going to school. Trying to fit in with the other kids. It was the start of the new year, and things were going to be different this time.

Kaler gets Willow to school and finds out the old teacher is gone. The new teacher happens to be his ex wife’s best friend Jenna. Talk about a shock for both of them. But the good news is, Willow is happy in school and learning and Jenna is a good teacher. The bonus is Kaler and Jenna get along great and sparks are about to light the fire. Things may become complicated but it’s going to be worth it.

The book is fantastic. It’s heart warming. There’s so much love between Kaler and Jenna. They have great chemistry between, I just love them. The author did an awesome job with this book. Touch on how small towns are and the way gossip gets spread around, everyone knows your business, truth or not. Sunday morning at Church, and the lectures you receive. Going out on Saturday night and acting like an Angel on Sunday. I have to laugh at that, I know people like that. But JL I can’t wait to see what you do with your next book girl. Bring it on. ❤️🔥🔥

❤️🌼I LOVE KALOR’S AND JENNA’S SOMEWHAT COMPLICATED LOVE...❤️🌼
In my opinion, with SOMETHING COMPLICATED, JL Leslie has given us a little different story from those we usually read,.... It’s a heartfelt story with lovable characters, (Kalor, Jenna and Willow, specifically) and characters we don’t like so much, and it’s about subjects we don’t usually get to explore in our books...important subjects, and I absolutely loved this book!!!! This book teaches compassion, tolerance and love for everyone...including anyone different from us.......❤️🌼
SOMETHING COMPLICATED tackles some big issues.... severe postpartum depression and Down Syndrome, to name two, while still retaining the humor....Truthfully, because I live in small town America, the small town humor, in SOMETHING COMPLICATED, is something I understood and appreciated.... and, I can honestly say, JL Leslies’s command of small town politics, small minds, rumors and gossip and life, in general, is spot on....One of my favorite examples is: Kaler says, “It’s church, Jenna. How bad can it be?” Jenna says “The same type of people inside are the same type of people who crucified Jesus.” I LOVED THAT!!!! It made me laugh, because I’ve always said I’m glad God will be the One to judge me, and not the people at church.....❤️🌼
SOMETHING COMPLICATED is the first book in JL Leslie’s Dirty Southern Secrets Series....And it looks like she has another good one.....❤️🌼

Something Complicated is book one in the Dirty Southern Secrets series and I couldn’t think of a better title for this book. You get complications, chemistry, small town nosy bodies, amazing characters (well okay some of them haha) and true to reality. Your heart is full of emotions reading this story and at times you want to shake some characters with their actions. It’s sad to say in this day in age that our society still treats people like this.
Kaler and Jenna have a past (as friends) and with events that occurred their friendship frayed over the years and you will see why. Kaler believed he had it all until life through him some lemons. I love how he handled this though, it’s not easy being a single parent and he chose to give Willow the best life he could. Speaking of Willow, she will have you caving to want she wants, and she is so cute. You will love all the characters (ok maybe not and you will see why) but she will become one of your favorites.
Jenna truly has some complications when she lands a new job as the kindergarten teacher. How do you stay true to one without hurting another? That’s a tough one and I love the way this played out. It could have gone so much differently especially in this small town and I’ll have to say it was very grown up on how this played out.
This book has so many emotions and it truly can be related to reality. I love how the author explored some subjects as we don’t see this as much and I loved it. Just reminds me that I’m glad I don’t live in a small town. It is quite funny though especially weekend life. I am excited to see where the next story in this series is headed.

Something Complicated is a sweet small town story. Growing up in a small town in the Bible Belt I know how gossip can be and how it can hurt. Jenna and Kaler have a complicated history. Being the best friend to his ex-wife is a complication in any situation, add to it a small town and it gets worse than a minor complication. This had all the trappings for a book I would love, small town, single dad, friends to lovers. Yet some of the drama was a bit over the top for me.

Jenna is a great person. She's sweet, kind, and a bit witty. Kaler is the typical broody male. Single dad who has raised a daughter with special needs with only the help from his family. Things between these two start out as friendship and I loved seeing them grow as friends and then lovers. The one character who stole the book for me though was Willow. Willow has Down Syndrome and is absolutely adorable. With her love of bows and tutus to her love of fishing, just makes her that much more adorable.

All three of them make a beautiful family, but some people don't understand Willow. It causes for some tense scenes and some "I wanna beat you" feelings.

Overall, this was a great book. I just rolled my eyes a bit too much on some of the over the top stereotypes.

Kaler is a single father to a special needs tiny human (LOVED HER), who he loves with all of his heart, after his wife left when said tiny human was about a month old. He would do anything for her, but always feels like he's failing. Jenna has come home to teach kindergarten, and ends up being Kaler's daughter's teacher, but she's also best friend's with his ex-wife. Yeah, I know, it was hard to keep it all straight enough to type it out. They have chemistry, but you already know, it can't happen, but it's going to. Until it does, the push & pull was absolutely too much though, sorry but it was. I would of straight up hurt someone to be honest, especially since I almost destroyed my kindle and it was an innocent bystander. They're also in a very small town with a ton of gossips so even the Pastor at Church puts everyone's business out on the street. I mean, that had me simultaneously mad & laughing to be honest, as I'm pretty sure I would have given him fodder for his sermons. Now, there's definitely a twist or two that pressed the switch to on for my f-bombs to drop, but it didn't have the solution that you would think so it produced an even bigger twist. Confused yet?! The way to fix that is to one click Something Complicated right now! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Sweet southern small town romance with quite the complicated twist! This book certainly fits its title. As a small town girl myself I certainly get how the gossip mill works, but the town in this book even out my hometown to shame. And I once had the whole town knowing I was pregnant before the announcement because I’d left the windows open when I told my husband, so that’s saying something. Obviously reading this was a bit like being home again for me lol!
Jenna and Kaler both were exceptionally sweet both as a couple and as individuals. Kaler is a single father to an adorable little girl with Down’s syndrome that has him wrapped around her little finger. He’s so dedicated to being the best father and giving her every opportunity in life. Then there’s Jenna with a heart of gold, just as dedicated as Kaler is to being an amazing teacher.
These two have a past that ties them together and makes the chemistry that sizzles between them quite the big complication when it comes to their happiness, but through every hurdle they find a way to just grow closer.

I really loved Something Complicated, and J.L. gave me so many things in this book I love...small town, single dad, second chance...I was in heaven!! I may have a little crush on Kaler, he is something special, and he's such a good dad to sweet Willow his daughter with Brynn his now ex wife, and he's reconnected with high school friend Jenna who is a teacher at the elementary school, and Willow's teacher. They start hanging out again thinking they can just be friends, they are denying the chemistry that is between them cause they are so worried about being the "talk of the town"...until they can't deny those feelings anymore, they start sneaking around, Jenna is best friends with Kaler's ex and is worried about what her reaction will be, so she decides to say nothing. This book was so awesome, and recommending it is a no brainer!! I can't wait for the next book in this series and see what J.L. does with it!!

Something Complicated by J.L. Leslie is the first book in the Dirty Southern Secrets series.
Meet Jenna Winston and Kaler Holt.
Kaler is a single dad with a special needs child. He's divorced and raises her with the help from his family. But all in all he's alone. He old a major grudge against his ex- with reason.
When Jenna moves back in her hometown everything is about to change. Jenna is a kindergarten teacher who loves her job. She's about to start at her new school and becomes Willow's teacher.
Kaler and Jenna have crazy through the roof high chemistry. But smalltown gossip and they're strictly off limits to each other.
But the heart wants what the hesrt wants. My heart was breaking for Kaler, his loneliness, desperation and his strength.
Something Complicated is a sweet second chances romance. I read the book in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. Simply captivating. I liked the excellent writing and the story, the characters I easily could connect with.

Because I am a HUGE sucker for a single dad romance I jumped at the chance to read this book - even though I was totally unfamiliar with the author. I totally admire the author for taking a leap and writing a story that is a bit different. It was interesting to read a romance that was kind of unique and coming from a new angle. Even though it wasn't totally my cup of tea I still was glad to see the author taking chances.

For me, the story focused too much on the drama surrounding the little girl Willow, the small town antics and the exes rather than the romance between Kaler and Janna. I really wanted to feel more between them and the emotions for their relationship rather than just their physical attraction. Also I thought that the story ended a bit abruptly.

Things I loved though were the sweetie pie Willow and the devotion her dad gave her. Melted my heart for sure. Overall I would suggest someone give this book a try themselves as they may feel totally different than me - especially if you also enjoy a good single dad romance and don't mind a story with high drama!

When life sends you lemons you either crumble, cry and run, or make lemonade. Kaler was getting good at making lemonade. A daughter with Down Syndrome, a young wife that can't handle it and the wonderful people in his small town with their small unforgiving minds. Dealing with small minds and small attitudes isn't the easiest part of his day but he has moved on. When an old friend returns and things start to heat up, the small town tongues start waggling. Great story about forgiveness and moving on also about acceptance and understanding. I haven't read much of this authors work but this one is passionate and sweet and has such a ring of truth with Willow and her Down Syndrome. Although it isn't the focus the lack of compassion and understanding for her and her challenges is addressed. This author does a brilliant job of addressing so taboo issues and gives us a wonderful read at the same time. Great stuff.

4.5 STARS!!

Really enjoyed this first book in the Southern Series. Kaler and Jenna were just meant to be in my opinion. He was such a strong individual for taking care of his special needs infant on his own. He could of taken the easy way out but he loves his little Willow. She just stole my heart.
Jenna grew up with Kaler and his brothers and best friends with Brynn whom is Kalers ex wife. She comes back to town to teach kindergarten. When Kaler brings Willow in on her first day he's happy to see her and can we say sparks fly.
So much against them....I mean your talking small town living, busy bodies, speculation, and we'll just plain I'm meanness.
Can love win?? Well read the book. Can't wait to see what's next.
I recommend this book.
