The problem I have with most middle-grade books is most of the time the synopsis sounds amazing and I can't wait to read it but it's not long before i'm thinking "I'm too old for this shit"!!! With that said, that is never the case with Chris Colfer his stories draw me in and captivate me and I curse every single time I need to put them down. A Tale of Magic was such an exciting story with great characters and fun and touching moments a truly delightful read can't wait for the next!

A Tale of Magic is the 1st book in a new series written by Chris Colfer. Even though it’s a prequel to his award winning Land of Stories series, readers do not need to be familiar with the characters in the first series.

Chris’s books are written with middle grade readers in mind; however, I think “children” of all ages will enjoy them and immediately feel love for the characters. I adored the protagonist Brystal; she’s spunky and determined to not take the path her parents have deemed necessary

A Tale of Magic is magical, adventurous, and gripping. Brystal Evergreen has always known she was destined for amazing things, however she must first survive the oppressive Southern Kingdom and her only escape are books which are illegal for her to read. Working as a maid at her local library gives her the perfect excuse to be near them and finds way to read them but one day Brystal uncovers a secret section of the library and finds a book about magic that changes her life forever. Magic is ...more

This was enjoyable until the end. There was one part that I didn't like. I wanted it do go differently. I liked that this was the origin story of one of the characters in The Land of Stories. It actually involves several characters from that series. Their journeys were bittersweet.

What another fantastic series from Chris. This is a perfect book about inclusion and acceptance for children and adults alike. Although we can see where this series will take us we know the lush journey is going to be worth every word. Love it

I am a giant fan of Chris Colfer's Land of Stories series. I knew I had to read this new series as soon as it was announced.
I love the way magic is portrayed in this series. Magic and witches have been outlawed and anybody showing any signs of being different or magical, they are sent away. In this way, Chris Colfer can discuss a lot of societal issues of hiding your true self or conforming in a way that is understandable to the younger audience. I think it's important for young kids to hear

Being totally honest here, I did not like this as much as the Land of Stories. It's written well, but I felt it was a tad repetitive with the 'choose love not hate' theme. An important message, sure, but it was reiterated in almost every chapter.
Colfer's writing is good, the dialogue is fun and I can tell he puts effort into the creation of his stories. It was interesting to read the origin story of the fairy godmother.

Chris Colfer is a name that's popped up a lot in the entertainment business. Some of you may know him as the actor who played Kurt Hummel in the TV show Glee. Others may know him for his bestselling book series for children, The Land of Stories. He's made a pretty big name for himself in the past decade, and is still going strong from what I hear. But I've neither seen Glee nor read his Land of Stories book series, but his most recent book, A Tale of Magic, did catch my eye in my local Barnes ...more

Thank you to Hachette Children’s Group for sending me an ebook review copy through NetGalley of A Tale of Magic written by Chris Colfer.

This was a wondrous book and I enjoyed it immensely. I was hooked into the story from the first page and was enthralled at every twist and turn that happened.

I loved the journey this book took you on, following Brystal Evergreen an exceptional girl in a set in stone dull world. She discovers so much more about herself, about the truth and about what the world

This was a simple, sweet fantasy story. I think one of the main reasons I really liked this book is b/c I've read The Wishing Spell and the others in the series. I think the only reason I loved this is because I loved seeing the origins of some of the side characters in the Land of Stories series. (For example, we get to see Mother Goose as a child) There were a couple of twists in the story, but one I completely saw coming. Also, I can see how this is a children's book because there are some ...more

It's a story about a girl named Brystal Evergreen who lives in the Southern Kingdom. All girls her age are expected to be good wives and nothing more. The only problem is that Brystal wants more. She wants to be free to read an not wear a dress whenever she goes out. After making a shocking discovery about herself, she is convicted of witchcraft and shipped off to The Bootstrap Correctional Facility For Troubled Girls and Women. From there she is rescued by a mysterious lady in a golden carriage ...more

This was a fun magical middle grade novel. A bit heavy on the message of acceptance and how it’s ok to be different but there could have been worse things wrong with it. Not that having a positive messages is bad in any way I just don’t like it constantly repeated and shoved down my throat. Other than that this was a really exciting adventure, fantasy book. I basically read it all the way through in one shot. The characters were unique and the plot was good. There was even a twist I didn’t see ...more

I enjoyed this. I love the magical world and getting to see characters I recognise from the other series in a new setting.

That said, the story didn’t capture me the way the other series did, nor did the characters. Some of the characters felt a little bland at times, and the story was interesting but at times felt a tad boring and preachy.

I still enjoyed it a lot and will read the next book

This book was an absolutely amazing prequel to The Land of Stories! It is a total page-turner, and it takes a GIGANTIC turn. The identity of the main character will be very shocking once you find it out!

OH MY GOSH is all I can say right now. It was seriously the perfect prequel/sequel (whatever you want to call it) for TLOS. I absolutely loved it!! It was absolutely beautiful, if you loved The Land of Stories as much as I did you will definitely love this too

I can’t really reveal too much without spoilers but needless to say, I was squealing and jumping around while reading the book. It honestly made me so happy and I honestly loved it!!!

I loved this book. The twists and turns are amazing. We are back in the Land of Stories, and we learn about the past, and how the fairy council came to be. It’s so good, and I know that this series will be another amazing one.

We need more from this author! Chris Colfer delivers one of the best stories of magic since Harry Potter. A must read!

A Tale of Magic was an interesting story, and it was fun to read, but so much of the book felt like thinly veiled efforts to convey a stance on social issues. But instead of letting the symbolism speak for itself, or letting the reader make inferences from the story, Colfer essentially beats the reader over the head with his message, which just made much of the book feel tiring at times.
