Fairy Dusted Series #2

Shot Through the Heart

WRAITH agent Will Donovan should have known better than to fall in love with a treacherous and beautiful Fairy, but he simply hadn’t been able to help himself. Now Commander Levi has teamed him with the gorgeous Ash again, this time to travel into the Vargr Realm to stop a dangerous and deadly drug called Candy Hearts from being sold and distributed to humans.

Once Donovan arrives, he has to deal with a broken-hearted little wraith, a treacherous brownie, amorous Nymphs and a growing attraction to his partner. When he’s kidnapped by Cupids, he’s taken to their capital city and has to face the biggest threat to his safety yet—his love for a being who can never stay with him.

Ash, along with a Paladin witch he picked up along the way, has to save Donovan, the love of his life and talk himself out of a relationship that will one day prove to be deadly. To do it he has to be willing to sacrifice his own life and break an ancient curse, but if he can pull it off, he might just get everything his heart desires.

I am really enjoying the Fairy Dusted world. It’s fun combining the “real” world and fantasy. This was an entertaining story with a twisted Valentine theme. While the ultimate ending was no surprise, the story had plenty of quirks and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat.

A fun read, definitely part of a series but it worked fine as a stand-alone. It was intriguing enough that I will eventually go get the other book and then re-read this one after some time has passed.

Shannon West has taken the staid, stale, same old, mediocre, and run of the mill stereotypical paranormal trope, shaken it up, blown it out of the water, turned it upside down and inside out, then given it her own fresh, unique, and unexpectedly different twist. I recommend getting this marvelous book immediately.

It is well known how much the short form does a disservice for bogus literary talents like Mrs West. Less a miniature story than an extended synopsis stuffed with boring sex of the purple variety so routinely conduced that it signally fails to produce or showcase the chemistry supposed to bind the partners, inept or absent psychology, dialogues that are at best wooden and at worst sophomoric, utterly ridiculous characters dancing around each other or appearing and disappearing out of sight without any agency, terrible paranormal mythology (the Cupids! the evil river!), and pointless happenings, this stale novelette with the kind of literary values that would not be out of place in the teaching sheets for a How Not To Write Fiction 101 class (typos are everywhere; the plot makes no connected sense; things happen without the least bit of foreshadowing even when they were extremely predictable; picturing the Vargr realm from what we see of it comes tantamount to having a root canal), drives for me the final nail in the coffin of Mrs West's ambitions to being a creator of smutty, fantastic worlds. She now rivals Lynn Hagen for the crown of worst contempory writer of PWP.
