Ignore the Trolls
Ignore the Trolls is funny fairytale with a serious contemporary message about the online bullies known as trolls, and how to deal with them.
In the majestic kingdom of Holly Hills lives Tim the Timid, a shy boy who has big dreams. He longs to join the jousting team so he can be one of the Knights, the coolest and most valiant kids at Ye Olde Elementary School. When tryouts are announced, Tim's friend Bethany the Brave offers him some advice: whatever Tim does, he must ignore the trolls.
For it's not all fairies and unicorns in Holly Hills. The land is overrun with nasty, mocking creatures that love attacking the weaknesses in others with the help of their magic picture-takers, and flocks of vicious bluebirds that tweet their cruelty across the kingdom. If you try to fight them, they only multiply.
But shutting out their empty taunts is easier said than done. Will Tim learn to just ignore the trolls, and ride to victory?

Cute story with great artwork! And my kids totally got the moral without me explaining it (ages 5 & 6).

KIDS BOOK OF THE WEEK
🧟♂️
Funny story, I came home the other day and told the children that I received a not-so-nice comment on social media and I explained how it hurt my feelings. My daughter quickly chimes in with “it’s a troll who said that to you!” I said, “why yes it is! How do you know what online trolls are??” 😳
🧟♂️
She then recommended I read this brand new book - IGNORE THE TROLLS by Jordan Gershowitz to “help me feel better.” Well, I picked it up and man, does she know how to give a good book recommendation!!
🧟♂️
This timely children’s book is a funny fairytale with a serious contemporary message about online bullies (known as trolls incase you are new to that term!), and how to deal with them. How awesome that we can arm our children with messages hopefully *before* they even encounter these issues! I sure wish they had this book for me in my mid-20s. Ha!
🧟♂️
I recommend IGNORE THE TROLLS for ALL children and ALL adults who have access to computers. This is a very important lesson to learn...and keep learning as adults (as in my case). Come visit me at the bookstore, we have a copy for you at @sundogbooks! 🧟♂️

Sadly, this is the world kids are growing up in now. As the parent of a six-year-old, she really doesn't have much screen access yet, as we're happier seeing her dress up as a princess and play in the backyard with her huge imagination. But as kids age, there can be nasty bullies who post inappropriate pictures of other people or cyber bully. It's sad that when once kids who were bullied at school could find sanctuary at home, but the constant use of technology takes that home sanctuary away. Kids can't get away from the 24/7 bullying. And I can tell you as someone who used social media as a teenager whose brain was not fully developed and now as an adult in my thirties with a fully developed prefrontal cortex, there's a difference. Social media can be a very positive things when used with maturity and with limits, but it can also be very destructive, and then embarrassing things are just out there forever. This book does a good job of highlighting this whole encouraging kids to ignore trolls. The literal adaptation works well.

A story posing as a medieval fantasy while exposing our modern day troubles with ‘trolls’ – those bullies who are committed to seeding doubt and insecurity in both old and young alike. Few books hit this topic, and fewer do it so subtly that a 6-year-old can enjoy while the older ones appreciate its wisdom. See my Storytime Survival Guide for more detail and...the confessions of an old Troll.

This is literally about internet trolls, and these medieval trolls are bullies with smart phones. The art is lovely!
