🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 💋💋 Stunning in its setting, characters and story , this book has it all .
Mountain Dark is the second in the Executioner Knights series The Unholy Trinity . The beautiful ,emotional and sometimes amusing story of Kress de Rhydian and Lady Cadelyn .
The two are a real double act , perfect in every way , immediately recognising their attraction to each other in a Chance meeting. But what they feel doesn’t matter , she is betrothed and he , along with his fellow Knights, Bric, Achilles and Alexander must escort her to her intended, Tatius De Shera , what could be more devastating for a couple discovering their love .
As always Kathryn le Veque puts across the heartbreak so well , I found myself in tears a few times, and had to grab the tissues. The romance is so beautifully developed throughout the book , that along with the fun elements you almost don’t see it building, then it hits you and leaves you gasping for breath , so perfect .
I really do love these books and this world that has been created, and I only wish I had a fraction of the talent that it must take to create it .
A really great book deserves only the best of reviews. This is a definite Five Stars . Highly Recommended !
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review.
Another fantastic read from Kathryn Le Veque. Wonderful story and such great characters. Love her medieval world she has created, her strong heroes and heroines and the wonderful friendships that cannot be broken! This book is no exception and a must read.
A Welsh princess, Cadelyne of Vendotia, was raised as English and now is promised to the Earl of Ellesmere. A marriage of importance to settle any disputes with the Welsh, her Welsh mother plans to use her as a pawn in a grab for power. Willam Marshal sends his best knights, the Unholy Trinity, to escort the princess to her betrothed. Kress de Rhydian is captured by the lady's beauty and personality. The long journey brings out a side he's never experienced before. Unfortunately any thought of being together can never be. Yet, fate is willing to give a helping hand. Mild descriptive sex.
It seems that the second Executioner Knight is going to Wales with a specific purpose. William Marshall is determined and I mean determined to make a match. A match between a Welsh princess and one of king John's enemies in the hopes of strengthening the growing rebellion against John.
William Marshall appears to all to support the king, but behind closed doors that couldn't be farther from the truth. He is plotting against John as it seems John is doing more to hurt England and he must be removed.
William sends Kress to Wales to escort Cadelyn ferch Rhys from her home back to Chepstow Castle for the marriage. You see Cadelyn is one of the last full blooded Welsh princess and therefore everyone wants her. Then there comes a complication it seems that the princess has fallen in love and not with her intended. She has fallen in with Krees on the way to the castle and Krees even knowing it's wrong can't help, but deny his feelings for her either
So now they have finally reached Cheapstow and the princess absolutely refuses to marry the man that William has chosen for her then William finds out why. She's in love with Krees. The princess has her own plans and decides that she will never be any means pawn again and leads a band of rebels all on her own. It looks like the princess has decided that she's going all out and waging war against William Marshal. Now William is starting to worry that Krees just might side with the princess and her cause so what does he do? You got it he betroths poor Kress to another woman and promptly sends him away before the princess can do more harm.
The princess may be playing a political game, but in all honesty she is so deeply in love with Kress that you can't help, but feel bad for their plight.
They don't call Kathryn LeVeque the Queen of medieval for fun. She truly is the queen of medieval. This lady is absolutely brilliant. This is Kress's story and he is one of three executioner knights, who are all sworn to William Marshall. The emotions in this book were so thick I could have cut them with a knife and I mean that in a good way. This book will make you realize how badly you want these two characters to make it. I was cheering for them as if they were real people. This book swallowed me whole. It's almost bittersweet because I feel like I just lost my best friend. I know that sounds weird, but I invest everything I have in a story while I read it. Kudos to you Ms. LeVeque, you did it again. You are absolutely fabulous and I can't wait to see what comes next.
1206 London Prepare to sit back and spend some time reading, because once you start this story there is no stopping! I always look forward to being engulfed in the brilliant imagination of Kathryn Le Veque and prepare for the emotions that are certain to come out. Oh yes they did! This is Kress de Rhydian's tale, one of three fierce Executioner Knights, sworn to William Marshall above all. Now Kress is directed to go to Wales to escort a Welsh princess to the man William has set her up to marry. One of the King's greatest enemies. Let the adventure begin! A journey that will see Kress and Cadelyn grow close to the point she does not want to wed the man of William's choice. The emotions run rampant as these two feel there is no hope for them. What will happen now? But all is not as it seems and Cadelyn has her own loyal rebels and is not willing to be a political pawn for William. Of course that starts all kind of trouble. So buckle in and enjoy the amazing adventure of a strong knight (yes just look at that cover!) and a beautiful, strong princess work toward their happy ending!!
"When that moment comes and you pass through the veil between life and death, wait for me. When my time comes, I will be looking for you." Catelyn to Kress
I don't care that there were a few minor errors in this book, it freaking rocked! It was one of those books that I didn't want to put down once I started it and got all bent out of shape when I was interrupted. I wanted to throttle the next person who interrupted me before I got done with it.
This is the second book of The Executioner Knights series and is Kress de Rhydian and Cadelyn of Vendotia's story. Kress is one of the brightest and the best of knights (all of Unholy Trinity are) and he along with Achilles and Sherry (see Book 1 for their introductions) as well as an entourage of other soldiers are to escort Lady Cadelyn to Mountain Dark. She is to be married to Tatius de Shera, a nobleman and a man she has never met. Kress has been told to shadow Cadelyn, a task he takes very seriously.
What he wasn't counting on was meeting her for the first time in the town square, selling what he thought were prayer cards. He didn't know who she was, but he was taken in by her beauty and when she gave him one of the cards, he kissed it and promised to return to seek her out after his mission. Imagine his surprise when he read the card to find out it wasn't a prayer card at all. It was a card with lascivious poetry written on it and they were selling like a wildfire.
Then, of course, imagine his surprise when he was introduced to Cadelyn only to find out she was the lovely woman in the square. She was the woman betrothed to Tatius de Shera and it was Kress's job to deliver her to de Shera at The Paladin so the wedding could take place on Mountain Dark. Things had just blown up in his face. But he was a man of honor and integrity and he swore off his ever-growing attraction to Cadelyn, even though she felt the same for him and was honest and vocal about it.
She didn't want to marry de Shera. She was in love with Kress and would do just about anything to be with him...except ruin him. She loved him more than she loved herself and for him not to see this mission through would be to ruin him. His reputation would be tainted and no one would ever trust him again.
There were a few times when I teared up while I read this. Kress and Cadelyn were brutally honest with each other and that caused some angst, especially knowing they could never be together. Cadie cried. Kress teared up. There was so much raw emotion between these two that it just rolled off the screen. Crazy attraction to each other, an impossible situation, then throwing forbidden love into it all and we got a winner of a book.
I should mention that Cadelyn is a Welsh princess of the purest blood and has been in hiding since she was an infant. Tatius has two nefarious brothers who are behind this marriage all the way to start a Welsh rebellion against the English with Cadelyn as their catalyst. This is a big part of the story and brings in a lot of action and intrigue.
This book was off-the-charts good and even with the few errors in it, I'm still giving it five stars.
Just a quick note here. I loved the secondary characters, too. Achilles and Susannah are a match made in hell with their insults and barbs at each other and the fact that she is a female knight and takes him on in a brawl. It was humorous, but there was some seriousness to it, too. Keep an eye on them.
*Although this book is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel
Kress de Rhydian was a true Executioner Knight in every way until a beautiful maid with a naughty hobby of writing naughty poems caught not only his attention, but his heart. This man that never knew love for a woman was floored by feelings he couldn't control. Cadelyn of Vendotia was a Welsh princess hidden away by William Marshall at her father's request before his death for her safety. She was at risk from King John and those Welsh rebels that would use her for their rebellion. She was raised English and all this to her was something she refused to consider was her problem. She planned to live in her happy bubble of contentment and let nothing disturb it. Her only plans for the future was a handsome Knight would find her and they would fall in love. Little did she know, but that was just what her future held except she was destined to marry someone else chosen for her by her protector for political reasons she cared nothing for. Her Knight was one of the escort that was to deliver her to her betrothed. The brothers of her betrothed had their own plans. They had been contacted by her estranged mother to use her daughter in a Welsh rebellion as soon as the marriage was finalized. They would profit lands and money as their reward when the revolt captured back lands lost many years ago. The bridegroom wanted no part of this so they planned to kill their brother after the wedding since he was a weak man that would not agree with their schemes. He not being as weak as they thought sent the youngest of the four brothers on a rescue mission to Christopher de Lohr the closest major neighbor that could bring the necessary help needed. Chris was a man well acquainted with warfare and putting down evil in this part of their world and would understand how vital quelling any such rebellion would be for the future of the kingdom. The story of Kress and Cadie is a beautiful story of love that is forbidden and yet will not die. His noble and unselfish heart could not betray the mission or the honorable man he served because that was not the who he was. He would protect her with his last breath, but would complete his mission in spite of the terrible pain it cost him. Cadie would not ask him to betray the person he was by going against every thing he stood for.
While in a tavern one night some men are cheating Kress de Rhydian and his friends; so Kress takes their clothes. The next day Kress is called by William Marshal and is reprimanded for taking these men’s clothes but also for a very important task. To escort a bride to her husband and Kress is not only one of the escorts but is supposed to be the lady’s shadow. The bride is Cadelyn of Vendotia, a true Welsh blooded princess and her identity is hidden except to certain people. Cadelyn is trying desperately to avoid her marriage to an unknown earl even with the reminder from her friend Susanna that her escort will be there to get her and she needs to be ready to leave. Of course Cadelyn’s escort arrives and in meeting Kress there is an instant attraction. Kress knows to give into this attraction is not only dangerous but could cost war between England and Wales. Still Kress will do his duty and both Kress and Cadelyn fall even more for each other. Cadelyn wants out of the betrothal to be with Kress and Kress will not give up his illustrious career as an Executioner Knight for love or will he? What an amazingly brilliantly written novel that is not only intricate in scope but still easy enough to understand and enjoy reading! All the characters including the hero and heroine are distinctly written with different personalities that just endear you to everyone. Of course there is a lot going on from hidden missions to princesses and a group of knights that are not only humorous but so real that it is so easy to get swept up in the story. Just because this is the second book in the series this book can also easily stand alone but you might want to read the first book anyway just to get the background of who the executioner knights are and what they did. Kress is just a magnificent hero he maintains such a strict sense of honor but still is very much human making the mistake of falling in love. Yes he not only wins Cadelyn’s heart but our hearts as well, a wonderful book boyfriend that will definitely stay with you too. Cadelyn the spirited feisty heroine is easy to like too. Yes she has a unique talent but also feels strongly, deeply and passionately about not only things but people too. Sure the book causes a pretty massive book hangover but is well worth the read and yes even a re-read too!
Kathryn le Veque always brings so much into her books and in Kress and Cady's story she didn't disappoint. Kathryn always brings mystery, honor, loyalty, laughter, sadness and love to all her books and as each one comes out the scale just explodes with all the fans wanting more and more. In Mountain Dark, there is the mystery of a princess being the last living Welsh Princess , living somewhere secret. And William Marshal brings the Executioner Knights into it. With a secret rebellion being planned that the Princess would lead them to victory. Meanwhile King John had set the marriage of his daughter to the last Prince of Gwynedd, William decides to use his "ace" Cadelyn of Vendotia, by having her wed the Earl of Ellesmere. So, William Marshall decides to counter that move with a marriage of his own choosing. Kress, is then asked by William to escort the Princess to Paladin then to Mountain Dark to wed the Earl. But as he finally meets Cadelyn he knows that something is different, then he sees that she is hiding something and when he confronts her, he's astounded. When Cadelyn meets Kress she also knows that something is different even though she understands that she is betrothed to another she starts to have feelings for Kress. Meanwhile, you have the female bodyguard, Susanna and Achilles going at each other, which will have you laughing so hard. You also will see that the two half brother's of the Earl plotting with the "supposed" mother of Cadelyn and the Welsh. Who will win? Will Kress and Cady get together? And will there be a wedding? All these questions and more that will come out while reading will be answered only in Kathryn's special way. You will love this book just as I have and you will continue to see that Kathryn le Veque has brought you back in time to the Medieval era where Knights and Ladies do exist and that Kathryn can tell their stories and you will feel as if you are there, that you are helping the characters and laughing and crying with them, and cheering them in their battles but for one thing when the story ends it still lives on in your heart....now for another Kathryn le Veque book
From the moment you start this wonderful book, it captures your imagination. Cadie is a wonderful heroine. She is industrious, intelligent, emotional, stunningly beautiful with an open heart, while the stoic, handsome, guarded and enormously heroic, passionate Sir Kress is the perfect hero. I found this book extremely descriptive, you almost felt like you were part of it, for example when Kress is tending to his horse in the stables and Samson swishes his tail and turns to his master, you can almost hear his tail swish. You get a real sense of the Knights camaraderie and friendship, their loyalty to one another, which is detailed in the wonderful conversations that Kathryn writes for them. Achilles, Sherry, and Bric are all wonderful characters with a very human touch. This is a very humorous book, but so gentle in emotional love. Many pages make you smile with Kathryn's warm description of Goliath's friendly nature, trying to lick Kress. But what I also loved, was a back story involving Achilles and Suzannah, watching their relationship grow is heart warming, Kathryn keeps it bubbling along really well. And of course there are the usual sub plots, twists and turns. There are many different players in this adventure, many conversations about duty, expectation, love and hope. I found this book completely captivating. Kathryn also has a great way of describing how fragile life was in these very dark times, with one always having to watch one's back, learning who to trust and who not too. Life was often very short and precious, making this book very atmospheric. I absolutely loved this book from start to finish, especially Kress and Cadie's relationship, which is such a wonderfully, soft and gentle partnership. Fabulous!!!
Kress de Rhydian is a knight with a reputation for getting things done. He takes orders from his liege, and completes any kind of task, no questions asked, no matter how dangerous or dirty the deed required. A member of a trio of knights called “ The Unholy Trinity”, he does not fail. Kress and his cohorts are assigned the job of escorting a young woman to meet her betrothed and ensuring that the marriage actually takes place. This young woman, Lady Cadelyn, is a Welsh Princess, who has been hidden away for years, as she is the last of her royal bloodline. The betrothal is for political reasons, but the man planning it doesn’t quite have all the information. While traveling toward their destination, Kress and Cadelyn begin a relationship with a little secret. Cadelyn has a special talent. Kress discovers it, and finds it amusing. He finds her more than a bit attractive. The two have a chemistry and longing that becomes enflamed as their entourage journeys toward their destination which only serves to create conflict for them. How can Kress just give her to another man? Will Cadelyn really be able to marry another? There are other dark forces at play that intend to use this marriage for nefarious ends. This is a wonderful story! It has a terrific plot with intrigue, action, romance and humor. I loved it! I am soooo looking forward to the story of Achilles too...the last knight of the Unholy Trinity- as they are a fabulous trio. I highly recommend it.
William Marshal has sent Executioner Knight Kress de Rhydian on a mission into Wales to escort Cadelyn of Vendotia, a young woman who’s a full blooded Welsh princess to her betrothed. Kress along with his fellow Knights, Bric, Achilles and Alexander must escort her to her betrothed Tatius De Shera. Cadelyn is one of the last full-blooded Welsh princesses who has a mind of her own. Kress has his hands full with this little spitfire, she’s not exactly what he expected when he started this mission. The attraction between them is instantaneous, I live the witty banter of course the naughty poems she writes and distributes with clerics help. Caddie and Kress fight their attraction, they both know what they feel doesn’t matter her destiny is already set by William Marshall. Caddie gets to the point she does not want to wed the man of William's choice, but fate seems to have other ideas for them. Will Kress fight for Caddie, he can’t just give her to another man, force her to do her duty Cadelyn refuses to be given to another man when she loves Kress. It’s such an emotional roller coaster for these two as they feel there is no hope for them. A great story and I can’t wait for the next Executioner Knight story!!! 5 STARS!!! I voluntarily read and reviewed this excellent story filled romance, strong characters with witty banter, betrayal and strong loyalties.
I love a well-rounded and complete story that fills a purpose in you to want to complete it as quickly as possible because it is so good. The Mountain Dark is just that type of book for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and if you want to read a take that will fill your senses, I highly recommend it.
Sir Kress de Rhydian, an Executioner Knight, who has been tasked along with three other knights who know each other very well to accomplish an important political task. Kress and Lady Cadelyn's story was fulfilling. It had great political intrigue, action, and a romance that kept growing throughput. Along with admiration for the sense of duty that English Knights held above all else. It truly touched my heart, where I found myself swallowing a lump in my throat. I also appreciated the humor throughout as well. The heart-wrenching dialogue between the hero and heroine help to truly understand the depths of both characters.
I highly recommend this second story in the Unholy Trinity - Executioner Knights series for it is a must-read. I look forward to the next story. This author did a fabulous job with The Mountain Dark!
In this book about the Executioner Knights, Kress along with Achilles and Alexander are tasked with taking Cadelyn, a pure Welsh princess to the Paladin, the de Shera stronghold to be wed to the Earl, Tatius. Mountain Dark is a Fortress in Wales, the match made to secure an alliance and to balance power in the region. But Cadelyn has been raised English, and has no knowledge of the Welsh people, only that she’s been protected by William Marshall her whole life. The Knights have been tasked with securing her protection until the marriage has been secured. What they didn’t count on, was the emotions she brings up with Kress.
This book has action, suspense, betrayal and dark secrets, and last but not least - love, all the ingredients for a Le Veque novel, and it will keep the reader flipping pages to find out what happens next. This book captivated me from the very beginning and held my attention throughout the book. If you like medieval romance, you can’t go wrong with this author. Amazing read.
I Loved It!! The second in The Executioner Knights series is a must read! The Mountain Dark will keep you spellbound as it takes you on a rollercoaster ride that brims with tension building twists and turns, trials and tribulations, danger, secrets and suspense that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat. I love Kathryn Le Veque books that gives readers a well-written story, filled it with flawed characters who manage to grow and yet retain their personalities which captivates you from the beginning until the very end, sizzling passion, hilarious moments but also heartbreaking ones that brought tears to my eyes and a visit with characters you came to love from other books, With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and as the danger escalates the suspense builds and villains with dark secrets abound which brings this read together perfectly.
Sir Kress de Rhydian is one of the Executioner Knights. They earned their reputation by doing any dirty job the King or their leige lord asked of them. This time looks to be an easy task. Escort a woman to her betrothed, even if she doesn't want to go. Cadelyn ferch Rhys only found out about her true bloodlines a short while ago. Now she is to be used as a political pawn. She had been hoping for a normal life with a man of her choosing to marry and writing her poems for fun. There is a grand adventure for both of them. The plans of others will put so many people in danger all for greed. This is a wonderful tale full of excitement and fun. Those of us who have read this author's work before will meet a few old friends and one interfering Marshal who nearly always starts the problems. Will he get his way this time??? I loved every page.
William Marshall gives his Executioner Knights, a very special mission to take a Welch Princess to her betrothed. Since King John had married off his daughter to a Welch Prince, he is hoping to balance that power with the marriage of Cadelyn of Vendotia to Tatius de Shera. Kress de Rhydian and the knights are to take her from Castle Rising to The Paladin and then to be married at Mountain Dark. What starts out as a normal assignment, turns into a rebellion, one that is tied to Tatius, his brothers, and a group of Welch Rebels led by Catelyn’s mother. Along the way, romance seems to enter the adventure when Kress and Cadelyn fall in love with each other. However, it can not be, as honor comes first. What a page turner and the action does not stop. Kathryn has given us a new wonderful group of knights to fall in love with. Wonderful read.
The second book in THE EXECUTIONER KNIGHTS trilogy has a perfect first chapter. We already know that the men are alphas, but they also have a brain. In the opening of the book, we have a glimpse of their cunning thoughts and it is epic. As Kress and the other knights are sent, by William Marshal, to deliver a bride to Tatius de Shera of Paladin Castle, he doesn’t realize just how his life will change. Lady Cadelyn has been raised as an English woman, not realizing until recently that she is Welsh. Intelligent and astute, she has formed a way to raise money for the priests and herself. Kress and his men meet Cadelyn and Susanna in town, but do not have a formal introduction until later. As they fall in love, Kress comes to the conclusion that he can’t give her to another man and Cadelyn refuses to be given. This is a great romance in the long list of wonderful books by Kathryn le Veque.
“When that moment comes and you pass through the veil between life and death, wait for me. When my time comes, I will be looking for you.”
William Marshal has a political alliance made that will strengthen the borders by betrothing a Welsh princess to one of the marcher lords. In order to see that this comes to fruition, he calls upon his most trusted knights…known as the Executioner Knights, these men will do anything to see that their orders are fulfilled…at any cost. But what happens when a hardened knight that has killed without thought becomes enthralled with a beautiful princess…well, dear reader, you will have to read the book to find out!
Kathryn Le Veque is a master storyteller when it comes to medieval romance. Highly recommend and look forward to reading more adventures of the Executioner Knights!
Kress de Rhydian is one the Executioner Knights his liege is William Marshall and he has an important mission for Kress and his companion Knights. Kress is to pick up a Welsh princess who has been hidden away for years and take her to her betrothed. Lady Cadelyn has just found out she is a Welsh princess which does not impress her what-so-ever and she is having to leave the only home she has ever known to be wed. Cadelyn is a free spirit, a little naughty and has a way of getting her own way she is not going to make it easy for Kress or his companions. I loved the twists and turns in this story.
Kress de Rhydian cannot help falling head over heels for the beautiful Welsh princess, Cadelyn of Vendotia, even though she is betrothed to another, however, his strength of honor is impressive as he refuses to allow himself to give in to his hearts desire! I want to meet the modern day equivalent to Sirs Kress, Alexander, Bric and Achilles just to gaze upon their beauty and wonder in their sense of honor! Once again, the Queen of Medieval writing, Kathryn Le Veque, has out done herself! How does she do it time and again and never disappoint???you
Yet another great story by Kathryn Le Veque, one of my all-time favorite author's. This one tells the story of the love of Cadelyn of Vendotia and Kress deRhydian, one of the Executioner Knights. I read is on a mission for William Marshall to deliver Cadelyn to her betrothed. Carolyn and Kress fall in love in the process and fight their attraction. However, turns out all is not in order with the betrothal - it appears her husband to be is a drunkard and it turns out there is a plot afoot that will put Cadelyn in danger. The knights must find a way to assure Cadelyn is safe and, hopefully, happy.
3.5 stars I always want to enjoy a KLV more and can't quite work out why they haven't worked for me. Her historical accuracy and writing are very good. I think its possibly the relationship that didn't work for me here. The heroine was spunky and fun, but I felt the hero was a bit of a meat head, and I couldn't understand why they loved each other. There was an element of insta-love which never sits well with me. I was glad that this one was an average length novel, unlike the 1000 page one I read some years ago.
Ms Le Veque is one of my favorite authors and I quickly snatch up every offering she makes. Mountain Dark however does not measure up to her other works. I was unable to connect with the heroine. In all previous works I’ve found the characters engaging and always provocative. I found this time that did not occur. Probably just me since I’ve loved all others. Still worth the read as always.
Terrific read❣️ This is another, ‘Can’t Put It Down’ Kathryn Le Veque Book. All her books are stand alone books. I’m a Series reader and I’d recommend that if you are also, then read them in order as these are The Executioner Knights, The Unholy Trinity! By The Unholy Hand, Maxton’s story The Mountain Dark, Kress’s story And now, I can’t wait for the release of, Starless, Achilles story, to be released in Aug. So enjoyed The Mountain Dark. This book does not disappoint. You’ll experience humor, suspense and history just to mention a few elements of this book. I have become one of the biggest Kathryn Le Veque fans❣️
The Executioner Knight captures the feisty love of his life.
Kress, was one of the Executioner Knights on a mission for William Marshal. The mission was to escort the feisty Cadelyn, Welsh Princess, to her betrothed. What a mission it turned out to be. She turned out to be the “Dark Lady” writer of lusty poems that all the noble ladies couldn’t wait to obtain. It was love at first site, and what an adventure of twists and turns to true love.
Kress is on assignment from The Marshal to escort a Welsh princess to her betrothed. Caddie, the princess has no interest in marrying her betrothed whom she has never met. She does however, have an immediate attraction to the handsome knight who is her escort. Kress must keep her safe from those who wish to harm her, including her own mother and the greedy brothers of her betrothed.
