Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. But his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, an enchanted Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to stretch like rubber. Its only drawback? He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…

As Sanji is forced into a political marriage by the scheming Big Mom Pirates, Luffy and the Straw Hat crew must enter enemy territory to rescue him. The Straw Hats will need to work with allies they don’t truly trust if they hope to succeed. But first things first: how will they crash the biggest wedding in the pirate world?!

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

This set of volumes starts at the low point for Sanji’s story during this arc and builds into something triumphant but also quite tense as we near (but don’t yet quite reach) the conclusion.
*As usual, I don’t think plot beats can spoil this story, but I’ve hidden some things that might make good surprises*

It really is one of the saddest moments in ‘One Piece’ when Sanji, having pushed away his friends in an attempt to save them, and worked himself up to be determined try to love Pudding (he’s picked her roses and everything!) overhears He’s just standing there in the rain, trying and failing to light a cigarette - metaphorically, his spark having gone out, as he realizes sacrificing himself is going to be for nothing.
SanjiRain
But then two things help him get that spark back.

First, when he goes to check on Reiju (who doesn’t remember what Pudding said, due to the latter’s memory-altering powers), she tells Sanji that he doesn’t just accidentally have more emotions and a kinder heart than his brothers: Sora knew that her son didn't need to be cold-hearted to be strong - and probably cared more about his happiness anyway! If Sanji is Judge’s failure, he is Sora’s triumph. Reiju also tells him that . Thumbs up to her for still being a (sneakily) good sister!

However, while Reiju is pressing him to run away with his friends, she refuses to leave with him, believing that . But then Sanji remembers that Luffy said he was going to wait for him at a certain place. So, he takes the basket he’d absent-mindedly packed with all the Straw Hats’ favorite foods, and runs out to see if Luffy kept his promise…and, of course, he did!

Sanji feels really shitty, even as Luffy scarfs down his (rain-ruined) food, and says he doesn’t deserve to rejoin the crew. But Luffy just punches him in the face and demands “TELL ME HOW YOU REALLY FEEL!” At which point Sanji admits:
Luffy’s casually accepting words shock Sanji, because he was still viewing his soft-hearted response to the situation as weakness, while Luffy just sees…Sanji-ness! At that, the sun finally breaks through the clouds – another tick mark on the Luffy sun symbolism!
WhoYouAre
Sanji gets to hear from the rest of the Straw Hat rescue party through a mirror fragment. He’s worried when Luffy announces: “We’re gonna go smash up big mom’s tea party and the wedding…after THAT Sanji’s coming back!”, replying: “Luffy, she’s an emperor of the sea! I don’t want my selfishness to expose them, er, to expose NAMI* to danger! So um…” But, of course, everyone is immediately on board!
*See how his mask of only caring about women is a pretense that he puts on to hide how much he cares about EVERYONE? We saw that when Doflamingo attacked the Sunny, and we see it in the slip of the tongue here.

Their plan to disrupt the wedding and save involves making an alliance with a gangster because he wants to assassinate Big Mom. They also plan to hijack Brulee’s powers to make use of the mirror world.

Sanji, meanwhile, has to pretend to go through with the wedding. This is rather dangerous, because However, his admiration for women comes to the rescue because, when she tries to paralyze him with horror by exposing her third eye, he 100% sincerely says that it is beautiful. And this collapses her, because through her whole life she’s been told how ugly that feature is and how she has to hide it!
ThirdEye
Her response is still rather aggressive, because she doesn’t know what to DO with that…but it still marks a turning point for her. Also, gotta love how the Straw Hats are SO chaotic that Katakuri, who can see the future, is like: “The situation is unpredictable! Even I can’t act to control it!”…right before dozens of Luffys jump out of the wedding cake!

The plan starts going wrong almost immediately, but Sanji does succeed in his rescue mission – looking very cool in the process, while Judge shows his true pathetic colors, .
“Judge: Answer me one thing, Sanji.
Sanji: Because my father would be sad, if I were still fixated on the childhood hatred from my past…I’ll be damned if I lead a life where I can’t stand tall and look him proudly in the eye. I ran away from Germa 13 years ago. And Vinsmoke Sanji died at sea. That’s what you wanted, remember? (yanks the giant Judge down to his knees) SO ADMIT IT! YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER!!”

The whole gang has to run as Big Mom goes into a frightening hangry-induced rampage, demanding a replacement wedding cake. During this, we get a flashback to the childhood of Big Mom (Charlotte Linlin)…and it is honestly really sad and explains a lot!

Since a (very large) replacement wedding cake is the only thing that can stop Big Mom from destroying the whole island, Sanji, team up to go make one. Meanwhile, Nami takes charge of the main part of the team (semi-accidentally stealing Big Mom’s sentient lightning cloud, Zeus!) while Luffy leads Katakuri into the mirror world and pulls the old “I’m not locked in here with you – you’re locked in here with me!” trick by smashing the portal behind him, and telling Nami to break all the other mirrors on the Sunny as well.

If someone convinces you to read this series, don't do it. It's amazing and it will ruin your life. I am on chapter 903 and have read nothing else for the month of Septmeber.

The Water7, Ennis Lobby, Impel Down, Marineford, Dressrosa, and Whole Cake Island arcs have forced me to pull all nighters just because they were so damn good. It has affected my job performance.

I know I'm deep in the sauce because I am on chapter 903 and I'm sad I only have 160 chapters left before I have to wait for weekly updates.

Life ruined. Would read again.

Man, why is One Piece so good? I mean, I just got out of the amazing Dressrosa and now it's serving me Whole Cake Island which is just as good and entertaining (maybe I'm biased here because I love Sanji and his power ranger backstory but oh well).

Seriously though, Sanji is amazing here and I love reading about his fucked up family of Power Rangers. Luffy is amazing, the villains are amazing, everything is amazing. Especially Big Mom who is such an entertaining villain (she's not Doffy but still).

I'm in love with Whole Cake Island and it's for sure one of my favorite One Piece arcs. I'm giving these volumes 5 stars if you like it or not because I was enjoying them so much.

There will be SPOILERS in the next part of this review!

You have been warned!

Anyway... we get some sick Power Rangers transformations and I'm so here for it. I just love it so much. I don't remember the last time I laughed this hard. The moment I saw Vinsmoke family transforming I just burst out laughing because I referred to those people as Power Rangers for so long and then they do this, only solidifying their resemblance to them. I can't. I'm sorry, but I had to get this out of the way first so I can get serious now.

Okay, now I can talk about Sanji again. I love this man. The scene where he hears Pudding's shady betrayal... I can't. My boy was called a failure again and he was betrayed and he couldn't even light a cigarette because of the rain. Also there was a great moment where Sanji looked at a piece of meat and it instantly reminded him of Luffy. And then he took that meat and carried it to Luffy right to the spot where Luffy said he was going to wait. Beautiful. I must say that Sanji is an idiot but a good idiot because he doesn't want to abandon his shitty family even after all they've done to him. And then right, when Pudding is supposed to kill Sanji... my man calls her eye beautiful and that messes her up so much that she becomes bipolar and starts helping Sanji (just what the fuck but sure). And then right, the Judge dude asks Sanji why the fuck he saved them and his response is just chef's kiss as he tells them that his real father would be disappointed if he just abandoned them. And now my boy is going to save the day by baking a wedding cake and I'm here for it.

Now I have to talk about Sanji's shitty family again (outside of power rangers transformations). First, I have to mention Reiju, who I thought was shady (and I still think her actions are very shady sometimes, especially when she knows that Sanji isn't a failure but wouldn't admit) but I forgive her for one single reason: the cuffs she put on Sanji were fake which means that his hands were never really in danger. And then we have Judge dude who is just hilariously dumb. I mean, my man says that he doesn't need help from a failure but Sanji clearly saved him and his entire family like one chapter before that. Also I just find it hilarious that his sons (except Sanji of course) are heartless freaks so they say that Reiju is weak when someone tries to kill her, but when it comes to Judge dude they all carry him away because I guess he isn't weak like Reiju. Like, what the fuck??

Now, Pudding right... I still don't like her even though she is now helping Sanji. No one should reject Sanji and she did so yeah. Also I hated that her only worry about the wedding was that Sanji's blood would stain her dress (ugh). The only good thing about her is that she wanted to kill those stupid ass power rangers as well.

There are some other things that I loved as well which are:
a) Luffy slapping Sanji (finally)
b) Brook subtly breaking that picture while being disguised into Luffy
c) Luffy smashing the mirror looking really cool while doing it
d) Big Mom eating that child kidnapper and the other children (at least that's my theory on what happened)

Also Pedro committed suicide so before I go, I just wanted to mention his sacrifice.

After Dressrosa, I was concerned I wouldn't enjoy the following arcs as much but I had no need to worry: Whole Cake Island is turning out just as good, if not better.

The arc started off a bit weak but just kept getting better and better, a bit the inverse of Dressrosa.

The whole storyline with Sanji was very endearing and touching although I hope the Vinsmokes come back again before the arc wraps up because I don't feel like there has been proper closure yet, especially with his brothers.

Big Mom, her children, powers and backstory were all great and although I wasn't sold on Bege at first, he did grow on me a little. Love the wacky powers of Perospero, the mini twist with Pudding, Smoothie is really intriguing and Katakuri LHM (♡x♡)

I also think the one point that really makes this arc so good is that we don't know what will happen. In previous arcs, we knew the Straw Hats would win so the battles are a bit derivative since we knew they would end in victory. Here, the Straw Hats aim at fleeing, not battling and the ennemies are seemingly stronger; they won't necessarily win which makes it thrilling and suspenseful as opposed to previous arcs when we know they will win for the arc to be over...

SPOILERS

1. Sanji and Luffy's bond was the highlight of this arc. The fact that even Nami was convinced that Sanji truly meant that he was a higher being while they are just peasants but Luffy lnows its not true. Luffy knows its a facade and its hurting Sanji the most. This stems from luffys steong belief that Sanji is innately kind. This clearly showed when Sanji saud he wanted to save his family who abused him his entire childhood and Luffy went yep thats's you. No matter how cruel people are your kind soul still wish them salvation. I love their bond so much :')

2. Sanji and Zeff. Ahhh that panel where he said the reason he saved his blood family was so he can look at his found dad in the eyes was absolutely heartwarming. The entire panel showing how Zeff raised Sanji to be the man he is truly showed the importance of upbringing in shaping one's character. It reflects Bandura social learning theory where kids follow modeled behaviour reflected by the adult in their life. Sanji followed and is a carbon copy of Zeff while his brothers became cruel and sadistic a copy of Judge.

Sanji's story truly reflect the famous quote:

"The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

3. Jinbei MY MAN THE GOAT WOW many fans did not like that he joined the fleet but bro HE IS A NEED. They would NOT have survived big mom without Jinbei. The stakes from now on are so high they need someone with experience, rationality and strength like Jinbei to further their journey. I LOVE JINBEI and I love his bond with Luffy

4. Brook boi does he get low recognition. He freaking got the poneglyph alone yes Pedro helped but in that castle he was alone. And his soul king enigma, amazing. Mostly tho I love hpw effortlessly funny he is and pedro man T-T

Lowkey glad someone died cos I LOVE OP but its very low stakes

WE GET BIG MOM'S BACKSTORY! Read it just for that honestly, so good.

These volumes cover a lot of the Whole Cake Island arc. We get more Sanji insight and good crew interactions. I'm honestly really liking Whole Cake if only for Big Mom, the creativity of the islands within her territory, and the siblings within the Charlotte family. Germa 66 isn't my favorite but I can see how some readers would enjoy their whole...science Power Ranger vibes and they all remain fairly cool, if vaguely horrible, in these chapters. Bege and Chiffon have such a healthy and loving relationship, they're my favorite One Piece couple (not that there are canonically that many).

This omnibus ends with Luffy and Katakuri's fight ramping up, a good teaser of what's to come.

(tbh I finished this one a while ago and forgot to mark it so I forget what exactly happens in these volumes versus the later ones so my thoughts are just kind of on Whole Cake in general)

Series: One Piece #85-87
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

This volume continues the Whole Cake Island arc. Luffy and the gang end up successfully getting rubings from the poneglyph, foiling Big Mom’s plans to destroy Gema 66, rescue Sanji from his arranged wedding, and are now trying to escape the island and Big Mom. This was nonstop action and danger for the crew and it isn’t over for them yet. I enjoyed seeing them foil Big Mom’s plans and make new alliances with Bege’s crew. We also see the return of Jimbei who has cast off his ties to Big Mom to join Luffy’s crew. This collection ends with Luffy starting his battle against Katakuri, who is one of the Sweet Commanders, and Sanji joining up with Pudding and Chiffon to make a cake to help stop the rampaging Big Mom.

This was very good! While this felt like it would have the "too many characters and too much happening at once" problem once again, in the end this volume was very consistent, with a very fun, cool and kinda creative development.

The final chase scene in particular was really fun. Hope it keeps improving like that, because this was the best volume since the timeskip started.

Say what you want but a Luffy decoy holding a hammer smashing you-know-what will always be iconic to me.

Shoutout to Camille, Kirk and Meri for bearing with me while I catch up on five years worth of volumes and dealing with my delayed observations. I owe you some Binks Brew ;)
