Mikel lives with his wife and two children in Costur, an idyllic Spanish town surrounded by hills. He has a job selling candy, but Mikel is a dreamer, not a businessman, and money is tight. What’s more, the ordinariness of smalltown life is preventing him from fulfilling a life-long dream: to become a writer.
 
Seeking both drama and financial security, Mikel takes a job as a bodyguard. His family is soon uprooted to the Basque Country, where Mikel is charged with protecting politicians from the armed separatist group ETA. It is a job that provides drama worthy of the page—but only at the cost of fear, uncertainty, and family breakdown.
 
In Mikel, author Mark Bellido draws on his own experiences to create a powerful and provocative story about a man who risks everything in the pursuit of a dream.

A captivating story. Wonderfull drawings in strong, dark colours to emphasise the rainy Basque landscape and the dangerous atmosphere. It's a tale about a salesman of sweets who becomes a protector of a basque important politician. From then of The atmosphere is one of constant fear...

An interesting story of a writer/sweet salesman-turned-bodyguard, and the impact of this change on his personal life

The art is the star of the show here, every page beautifully illustrated. I especially loved the colouring, which perfectly reflected Mikel's emotions, and the bleak backdrop of his new life

Ik heb me wat laten afschrikken door de prijs van dit boek (€40) maar ben, na alle lof die ik al anderhalf jaar hoor en lees, toch overstag gegaan.

Verhaal : Een Spaanse snoepverkoper is op zoek naar inspiratie voor het schrijven van een boek. Zijn oplossing is bodyguard worden van Baskische politici die bescherming nodig hebben tegen aanslagen door de ETA. Dit zal wel het nodige stof tot schrijven opleveren en ondertussen de broodnodige financiële zekerheid bieden voor zijn gezin. Nou ja... oplossing... zijn leven wordt inderdaad interessanter om eventueel ooit in een striproman te gieten maar ....

Vanistendael is niet belemmerd door een opgelegd aantal pagina's en krijgt grote artistieke vrijheid om de gebeurtenissen, gebaseerd op een periode in Mark Bellidos leven, naar strip te vertalen. Het levert een meeslepend boek op, na ‘Toen David zijn stem verloor’ opnieuw een schot in de roos.

This book is absolutely fascinating. I don’t get why so many people gave it three or four stars. It’s a masterpiece of graphic story telling. The technique, the colours, and the composition changed depending on the situation at hand. Beautiful. On top of that—SPOILERS AHEAD—this is an adaptation of a true story (at least partly). The author is a writer who enrolled as a bodyguard to explore the concept of freedom and got stuck in the job for four years instead of one. Then he met the illustrator almost by accident and she was so fascinated with the story that she insistes on transforming this novel into graphic art. We are extremely lucky to have the book and I would recommend anyone to read it.

The ending is very ‘The Devil Wear Prada’-ish, but there is an epilogue that more or less pulls everything together.

We zien alle dagen wat voor angst terreur met zich meebrengt. Dit boek brengt een klein verhaal op die achtergrond. Een klein verhaal in een groot probleem.

Ik stond nooit stil bij de nood aan extra beveiliging, de mensen die dat dan worden én wat dat doet met die mensen. Dit verhaal wordt verteld door zo iemand & deskundig ingetekend door Judith Vaninstendael. Blij dat ik het gelezen heb.

Een hard en confronterend verhaal, eentje dat bleef verder zinderen. Opnieuw prachtige tekeningen en ik bewonder de manier waarop Judith Vanistendael de sfeer zo treffend kan weergeven door kleurgebruik.
In het nawoord vertelt ze zelf over haar strijd met het onderwerp en dan vooral dingen moeten tekenen die ze niet graag tekent, maar dat was er dus niet aan te merken! Aanrader!

Prachtig getekend, maar het verhaal wist me niet hélemaal te overtuigen. Het geeft wat te weinig achtergrondinfo en maakt het heel zwart-wit. Ik ergerde me ook regelmatig aan het hoofdpersonage Mikel/Miguel.

Une très belle BD au scénario tout aussi intéressant : entre rêve (d'écriture, d'une autre vie) et réalité politique d'un garde du corps au service des personnalités menacées par l'ETA.

Salto desarrolla peripecias y conflictos de un guardaespaldas en las vascongadas, en los últimos estertores de ETA. Y, bueno, el cuento lo cuentan bien. La estética, correcta, sin alardes, a menudo ligera. En definitiva, una historia correcta que ni engancha ni llega a interesar demasiado.

Une belle surprise de la part de Judith Vanistendael, qui nous offre ici le récit (quasi) véridique de Miguel, père de famille, qui a dû tout abandonner pour poursuivre une chimère: avoir une histoire à raconter. Devenu à l'improviste garde du corps pour protéger un homme contre les menaces de l'ETA - groupe terroriste nationaliste revendiquant l'indépendance du pays basque, Miguel est profondément touchant et authentique: comme tout être humain, il cherche à réaliser ses rêves et se frotte à un obstacle quasi insurmontable avec lequel il va devoir apprendre à négocier.
Les traits de la bande dessinée prennent plusieurs formes, allant du réalisme à l'impressionnisme en passant par le baroque (l'image en mouvement), voire la caricature. Malgré toutes ces variantes, le dessin rentre parfaitement en adéquation avec le contenu, et l'on s'éprend dès lors d'un personnage avec lequel nous croyions n'avoir aucun point en commun. Inspiré d'une histoire vraie, Salto s'avère à mon avis une belle représentation de la complexité de la nature humaine, de ses rêves et de ses échecs. Un must!

That was depressing. I appreciate what the authors were going for, and the artwork, chunky and grey and black with splashes of colour, really fit the mood of the book. But it was too depressing, I almost stopped halfway through. The one thing I don't get it, why Mikel didn't quit, early on, once he realized what the job was, the risk he was taking, and the damage it was doing to his family. He should have quit, and the fact that he didn't was very frustrating to me. Because of the depressing theme and the frustration with the main character, I can't say I enjoyed the book, so I can't give it more than 3 stars. But al the same, I have a high appreciation for what they were going for.

Aangrijpend beeldverhaal - gebaseerd op ware feiten - over een Spaanse snoepverkoper die bodyguard wordt in het Baskenland, waar hij een burgemeester beschermt tegen de ETA. Hij - Mark Bellido, maar dus de Mikel uit de titel - doet het omdat hij schrijver wil zijn maar niets meemaakt. Dat verandert, maar hij betaalt een zware prijs.

Judith Vanistendael ontmoette Mark Bellido op de camino naar Compostella. hij vertelde zijn verhaal en volgde Judith naar Brussel. Hij woont hier nu.

Bij momenten geniaal getekend. Gelaagd, slim, pakkend.

Though it's a completely different topic than her previous graphic novels, Van Istendael once again sucks you into the story, grabs you by the throat and never let's go. The drawings convey tons of emotions without ever getting sentimental and Bellido's story really came to live.
