When I started reading this book and found out it was about spiritual attacks, I was a little leery. Now that I have read the book, I am greatly impressed with the insights it contains. I have never read a book so revealing about spiritual attacks, how to recognize them and deal with them. I was impressed with the combination of spiritual insight, common sense, and scientific study Walker uses in this book.

Walker believes many Christians are living below what God has intended for them. Many Christians struggle with issues, never understanding the root of the problem. Resentment, exhaustion, anger and similar problems may well have their roots in demonic attack. He does a good job of helping us understand how the attacks work. He then provides thought provoking questions to help us work through the issues to healing.

Walker uses Jesus' encounter with the man with the unclean spirit in Mark 5 as a framework for his exploration of spiritual oppression. I was surprised at the insights he gleaned from that experience. Self pain and manipulation are just two of the characteristics Walker identifies. The characteristic that surprised me the most was hyperspiritualism. “Religion is often used as an escape route by people who don't want to address the deeper issues of their lives.” (100) That one made me think long and hard.

I highly recommend this book to Christians who want to investigate the possibility of spiritual oppression in their lives. While Walker says Christians cannot be possessed by demons, they can be oppressed to the point of physical problems and mental and emotional instability. You'll encounter some common sense yet spiritually insightful information to help you in the process of self discovery and then the task of successful spiritual warfare. It will not be easy work but will be well worth the effort.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Story Notes

Dr. Walker offers an in-depth study of how to get to the bottom of our spiritual, mental and physical struggles and learn to thrive in the midst of adversity.

We all have something that we struggle with, no one is immune from hardship in life. But when we let those struggles take us captive, we cannot do all that God would have us do. This is the premise of Dr. Walker’s book and I found the topics covered very interesting. While I personally do not currently struggle with the crippling problems presented in this book it did help me see that is not the case with everyone. Just because someone seems to have it all together doesn’t mean they are not broken inside. We can all wear a mask in front of the world but the quiet alone moments are when we let our true selves show. I loved the way that Dr. Walker went step by step to address the central reasons for on-going struggles and how to intentionally move beyond them. I truly believe many will find the help they need to get started on letting go of their deepest problems within the pages of this wonderful book. And I will be keeping this book in my library to refer back to when I’m feeling overwhelmed with my own struggles. There were so many good passages that took their authority directly from the Bible and this gave the chapters real weight. It’s one thing to just make bold proclamations about how to handle problems, it’s another to use Scripture to make those proclamations. While one can be only based on personal opinion the other carries great strength and needed solutions. I loved that Dr. Walker did not tiptoe around the root issues but called them out straight. Satan and his Demons are looking for any foothold and when we hide our problems rather than facing them with Jesus, we give them just what they are looking for – a weak spot. If you have been a Christian for any length of time, you will have faced the quiet, evil whispers that you’re not good enough for God to use. How quickly Satan finds just the right words to plant in our minds to keep us from God’s best. If we are going to conquer this liar we need to fill our minds and lives with the promises and strength of God. Sometimes it is a minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day struggle but Jesus promised that we would never be alone. We can find peace and rest in the arms of our Father who longs to carry us. What we see as an insurmountable wall, God sees as a piece of yarn. But we have to be willing to open ourselves up so He can remove the poison of our pain and hurt. I’m positive that anyone who reads this book and takes it’s challenges seriously will find themselves greatly helped. I will certainly be recommending it to others in the hope they will find it just what they need.

I received this book free of charge from Charisma House publishers in exchange for a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

This bookis really really good. And book I will keep on my shelf and refer back to. If you are going through anything AT ALL (all of us) I believe you should read this book! It really digs deep into getting to the root of a problem.

I also love how this book advocates for therapy. Therapy has gotten a bad name in the Christian communities. It's a tool that can be used. All of our health is important to God. This is just a great book. If I could speak higher about it, I would!

Do yourself a favor and get the book! I took my time to read it over a few months. At the end of each chapter are questions to answer that take you deeper! Enjoy the journey! Please come back here and let me know your thoughts!

During a time that I was desperate to understand why I had the thoughts, fears, and defenses that I did, this book was extremely helpful in illuminating the ROOTS of my issues. I read it first without note-taking, then re-read it with my notebook, which proved to be a solid strategy, as I was able to really dig into the areas I needed to work on.
