The Master of Ships by Naomi Finley is a short historical novella that follows the lives of Charles Hendricks, a wealthy American, slave-owner and merchant, in the 1840’s and the woman he fell in love with, in England, the half-black, former slave, Isabella. This novella is obviously a continuation of a story begun earlier, but it is not necessary to have read the previous book to obtain enjoyment from this one. Charles, despite being cheated on b

Finley gets better & better!

I want to apologize to Naomi for taking so long to write a review that is overdue and deserves accolades. I can explain, yet it is no excuse. I have developed a wonderful friendship with Naomi and because I fangirl over this lovely, descriptive writer I fear a mediocre review for any book she writes is unworthy. I wanted to be in the right state of mind. I often find it easier to write a three star review rather than a five star review. When faced with describin

This is a glimpse of Charles as a younger man after losing his wife when Willow was a little girl. It is also about Isabella (and now we need a book about her after this book ends!). But I digress. Charles finds his new direction in life in this story and how that comes about is sad, but a bit enchanting also. Didn't care for Charles much in Slave of the Shadows till near the end. Learned more of him in Guardian of Slaves and the parts of his life that had been kept secret. This novella shows us ...more

Love this series

This book deals with Charles story. The whole series and the Novellas that go with the books are great. They take place in the Times that slavery was still being practiced in the south. Love the ending of this novella where Charles finally sees what his wife, who has since passed, was fighting for and I loved his change of heart. Can't wait until the next Novella and book are released. Great author.
