I know two things with absolute certainty. Second chances don’t come easy. And I’m going to marry Emma Parker.
Ten years ago, I was troubled and angry, looking for an outlet for my rage. To protect the people I love, I made the choice to join the Marines—and leave the love of my life behind.
Emma moved on. But now we’re both back in our hometown, and I’m determined to earn her forgiveness. To show her we belong together. I’ve made loving her my mission, and I’m determined not to fail.
Operation Get Her Back was previously titled Must Be Home
Claire Kingsley is a USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author of sexy, heartfelt contemporary romance, romantic comedies, and small-town romantic suspense. She writes sassy, quirky heroines, swoony heroes who love their women hard, romantic happily ever afters, and all the big feels.
Second chance romances are generally not my jam. I just could never be as forgiving as the heroine is in this story. It's not a bad story, the hero is decent, and the reason for their separation isn't the worst I've ever read. But I still have a hard time rooting for them. I'm well aware this is a me-thing as opposed to a problem with the story. But the entire time they were bumping uglies all I could think was no honey, he has *not* earned this.
There was something about this one that came off super sweet. I liked that Hunter knew he made a mistake with Emma in the past and he was determined to do something about it now. Loved that he came up with a plan and slowly slide in there through the friendzone. I was a bit worried when Emma found out about Isaac, but that turned out ok, yet I think that Hunter made the right choice in pushing Emma away if she wasn't 100% in with him, once Isaac came into play full time. I liked how this one ended, glad to see that Emma realized a sneaky thing Hunter was doing very openly, which made her really think and make the choice to fall again and Hunter was right there to catch her.
Emma Wilder is my least favorites of narrator. She sounds to Breathey. 🥴
The story of Hunter and Emma first started in Jetty Beach, as young, first love. But the darker, more violent aspect of Hunter’s nature makes him flee this small beach town in the middle of the night, leaving Emma behind without a word to join the military.
Ten years later, he finds his way home again after an IED explosion and losing his best friend. He’s come home to take care of his friend’s son and make sure he has a father figure, like Hunter never had, but Emma has moved away and is married.
Emma has finally had enough of her abusive husband and his family. She secretly builds up enough courage to divorce him. She grudgingly moves back to Jetty Beach to start her new single life again.
A chance sighting of Emma at the Farmer’s Market brings back that feeling of unrequited love with a vengeance that Hunter can not ignore. With the help of the amazingly funny Clover, he sets about winning her back in a campaign conducted with military precision.
Overwhelming hurdles and hard decisions must be made that just might break this couple forever. Can Emma bring herself to trust that Hunter is a grown man now with a man’s responsibilities?
Claire Kinglsey creates real characters that face insurmountable issues. She manages them with great care and dignity, building them up until they are whole-hearted again. It is an excellent read that will have you rooting for healing love yet again.
This is one of those books I have had the pleasure of rereading. The story is simply heartbreaking. I'm in awe with Claire’s talent and sensibility. She wrote a story that went straight to my heart. Hunter an ex marine, has never forgotten his sweetheart from high school. Emma instead has been hurt by Hunter when they both were very young and although they went on with their life, they haven’t stopped from loving one another all these years. When Hunter hears that she has recently divorced from her husband, he entangles himself in a series of events that will lead both towards happiness.. If you want to read about an honest and pure love then you surely need to read this book.
When they were 18 years old, Hunter left his high school sweetheart, Emma, in the middle of the night -- no explanation, no note, no goodbye. Ten years later, they both find themselves back in their hometown; his career in the Marines over after an injury and her as a divorceé. Hunter is determined to reclaim Emma's heart, and plans it out like it's his the most important mission of his life. At first, Emma can't forgive and forget about the way Hunter broke her when he disappeared all those years ago, but he slowly breaks her down and she agrees to date him again. But when she discovers the real reason why he left her behind, will Emma ever be able to trust him again?
"It's good to see you, Emma." Oh, Emma's a-ha moment gave me all the feels!
I hadn't read any of the other stories in this Jetty Beach series, but I didn't feel that I was missing out on any backstory, either. This book was focused on Emma and Hunter -- with other couples from the other books as supporting characters.
UPDATE FOR AUDIO: it’s been 6 years since I’ve read this book and I loved it just as much! Having read Claire’s books that have come out since this one, I was pleasantly surprised by the Easter egg of Salishan Cellar Wine from the Miles family series! As for the narrators, Rock Engle and Emma Wilder nailed the performances they gave to Hunter and Emma. This was the first book I've listened to with Rock, and I will most definitely be looking out for more from him.
I volunteered to read an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Maybe this is really mean, but I can't rate a book highly when the author sprinkles it with literally in the American fashion. By the "American fashion" I mean using words incorrectly so often that people forget the original meaning.
"Thursday is literally the longest day ever"... no Kingsley all days are 24 hours. It's fixed, it doesn't change. It can feel like the longest day ever.
"My heart feels like it's literally in my throat." WTF?
"This place is literally one step removed from a crackhouse." Errr, how is a figure of speech literal? But if your place literally was one step removed from a crackhouse then your literal next step would place you in a crackhouse.
"This is the literal worst." I am pretty sure being in a ditch isn't the literal worst, Hunter. You had your pelvis shattered. You've dealt with worse.
I am sure there were more, but I was done reading a Valley girl's business plan. Not a literal business plan, of course.. haha. But it felt like one, what with Hunter's plan that seemed to be chugging along with no conflict or issues. Imma guess that Wyatt turned up at some point so Kingsley could carry out her unoriginal, less frightening version of Sleeping with the Enemy. Someone let me know if my suspicions are correct, I'm not spending anymore of my Saturday on this small town girl's saccharine wish fulfilment.
Second chances can be hard when the boy that held your heart shredded it when he disappeared into the night, and a decade later that love hasn't fded but just hidden behind brick walls. First time reading Claire Kingsley and I can t wait for more, loved that it kept my attention from the start, right about of drama and romance. This is the first time I've read when there is an angry ex husband that wants his wife back, cause a small problem, leaves and never to be heard from again, that was nice. All the others I've read they never give up until someone falls. Told in both p.o.v. & HEA.
There’s something so humbling about a wounded veteran seeking his happily ever after. It strikes a chord in my heart.
That Hunter’s first love, his forever love, Emma, is recently divorced, sweetens the pot. He’d left her high and dry at one time, can he plan this mission to fruition or will he have to abort.
Kingsley writes with a passion that melts your heart, with her words the town of Jetty Beach feels like you’ve always lived there. The people, your best friends. This series was well worth reading twice, so glad I did.
In summary: Emma has recently gone through a nasty divorce (like literally at the start for the book she had just finalized it) from a controlling and posesive man who isolated her from friends and family. After this, she swears off men and decides to be alone/single for the time being. She moves in with her brother in the town where she grew up, a place she avoided for a decade, as the memories of her breakup with her first love were still painful, even in the present day, as he one day out of the blue he dissappeara, leaving her (after 2 years of dating) without saying a word...💔.
Fast forward to a couple of days of the FMC being in town, she runs unto Hunter at a food market, her childhood love who broke her heart. Hunter basically stalks her (hello? red flag!! run, Emma, RUN 🏃♀) until she agrees to go out with him for coffee ☕️ wich escalates into them f*cking in what seems like a blink of an eye. I just think that Emma jumped from one relationship into another waaay too fast, and Hunter, in a way, took advantage of her vulnerable situation, which is not cool 😩🙄😒🤨🤦🏼♀️.
The spicy scenes were well written and sexy 🥵😳🌶️🔥, but they'd been together for 2 years in past, and and he'd never done oral on her??! 🤦🏼♀️ Hello red flag, nice to see you again 👋.
Flinal thoughts: The second chance romance trope has never been one of my favorites. However, I believe that the author, Claire Kinglsey, can tackle pretty much any trope/topic in a novel and make it interesting and engaging. This novel is not her best work. However, it's entertaining and worth checking out.
I’ve read all of the Jetty Beach series besides Gabe’s story (#7) but as of right now, Hunter and Emma’s story is #1!!! If I could, I would rate this 10 stars.
Out of everyone, the complexity of Hunter really brings his story into so many dimensions. His reasons for leaving. His dynamic with his family and soon-to-be-sister-in-laws. His previous career. Isaac. His feelings for Emma. His plan to get Emma back. I read this story after reading Behind His Eyes (Ryan and Nicole’s story) and so Hunter is fresh in my mind and I’m so happy I continued on with him. He’s so dynamic and heartfelt and just amazing.
This is also the second book I’ve ever read that had me on the verge of tears (of happiness of course!)
Although all the books in this series are about to same length, I felt like this story was much longer (which was a great thing) and I really got to ride through each hurdle.. and date with them.
BIG RECOMMEND! Will miss this gang once I finish Gabe’s story but this just solidifies my love for Claire Kingsley!
Hunter is a former marine who has had some challenges. Luckily for him, the Jacobsen family took him in as their own. Emma is just divorced and finding her way. I loved that Hunter knew right away that he still loved Emma and wanted her back yet recognized that she was not ready for a relationship. I love his plan to win her over regardless of how long it would take. I really liked that Emma could still see the good in Hunter and gave him a bit of a chance. I really liked it when she let him all the way into her heart for a solid second chance. The setting of Jetty Beach is still wonderful. The Jacobsen family is amazing. I especially enjoyed the humorous scenes with Clover and Hunter. She is such a nut and so good for those guys. I really loved Hunter's heart. Beneath that tough exterior and bad experiences is a soft and tender soul that melted me.
Emma is newly-divorced and has to move back to Jetty Beach temporarily to live with her brother. She doesn't know that the man who broke her heart after HS, Hunter, is back in town. Hunter has never stopped loving Emma, and comes up with a step-by-step plan (op) to get her back. But Hunter is keeping a secret from Emma. Is it a deal-breaker?
this is me RANTING because i saw so much potential and i know i wouldve loved this book incrdibly so this is my heartbroken and sad rant of what just didnt work:
DISAPPOINTING!! this book was set up so wonderfully from the beginning!! i was so excited!! wanting to feel to angst and passion and love these 2 feel for it each other get built but it never delivered!! im incredibly sad and frustrated!! it was sooo good but as just as their angst was starting to build it deflated like a bomb! Emma gave in extremely early and that just ruined it all.
i mean that can get a pass because they have history so the tension to have sex and go forward with it makes sense but for her to continuously have sex with him for moths!!! and not question him about his sudden abadonment of her all those years ago or not try to bring up discussions about it made absolutely NO SENSE to me at all!!
I love Isaac! how could i not! i find him adorable and i love them together but to use more time on that rather than make their tension slowly build into a firey explosion was very wrong move.
to be honest i loved this story and it wouldve have definitely rocked it out of the park if the writer worked more on building that tension and developing their relationship more in the beginning. i mean i can tell you everyone would most likely rate this book the best one in the series so far if it went that way. it wouldve definitely been a full on 5 stars read.
lastly, we all know and get Hunters love for her but the fact that he says theres no meaning without her or that i dont know he wants to marry her sounds not believable enough when he refuses to tell her the reason he left! as if she isnt worth it!! it was his last minute chance and he probably would never have told her if she never made the move first to say hi to him and Isaac...im not mad at his reason for leaving. it happend and i respect him for thinking it was the best decision at that time. but how he handled it with not telling her and being completely honest with her was disrespectful and complete bull. She cant just forgive him and move on! it feels like their relationship when they were younger wasnt serious enough. she was seiously heartbroken by him and deserved proper answer. As a reader i dont think he did enough for her.
Im just so completely upset and saddned because this literally couldve been my favorite book where i would reread it ver and over but it fell flat. And for that i am heartbroken as well. THE ENDING with the princess bride was too abrupt(i got whiplash having to think about the movie and figure out what the hell she was talking about cause it was to damn abrupt and ridiculous...he didnt even explain that that was what he was doing to entire time!! saying he loved her. man i got so mad when she was the first one to utter those words. the reasoning was just dumb)and wrapped sooo fast i was like ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! he needed to grovel and that just didnt happen. the writer couldve also used her ex husband more in the beginning to make that tension rise and her more forgiving of Hunter. i literally was just so angry i didnt want to even finish the epilogue at all. Emma deserved a better proposal than she got! why was it so quickly resolved. just NO! I really just wanted to dnf it! but she created such great characters!! and it just kills me that they arent being used to their full potential!
i cant talk about this anymore.it pains me alot. the author always sets up her books so well only to have it start falling apart around the 50 percent or so mark. anyways im out! i just hope her relationship building gets better in her later series.
First of all, I have no idea why the author and her publisher keep changing the titles to these books? This was Operation Get Her Back and retitled Must Be Home. I think it even had a different title before that. At any rate if you’ve read the synopsis you know this is a second chance at love trope. And IMHO a very good one. If you’ve read any of the first three books in the series you already know Hunter, brother of the heart to Ryan and Cody Jacobsen, the male leads of the first two books in this series. You know that immediately upon his high school graduation Hunter left Jetty Beach in the middle of the night to enlist in the Marines without so much as a goodbye to anyone. Not the Jacobsen family whom had taken him in and treated him like one of their own and not his girlfriend Emma. His leaving unexpectedly broke Emma. Now it’s ten years later. Hunter has returned home and made peace with his family. Emma’s divorce papers from her emotionally controlling and abusive ex Wyatt have just been executed. Emma has avoided returning to Jetty Beach just to avoid the painful memories of Hunter. But circumstances force her to move in temporarily with her older brother Gabriel and Jetty Beach being the small town it is, it doesn’t take long for Emma and Hunter to run into one another. Hunter discovering Emma is recently divorced can’t stay away from her once he sees her again. Emma is so afraid of her feelings for him, (feelings she can’t even admit to herself) that she at first refuses to even hear is apology. Emma’s father left her mother for another woman. Hunter left her and broke her heart. Her ex-husband was a complete dick. So Emma has reason not to trust in love or to put her heart out there again. Especially to the only man she’s ever really loved. She’s a really tough sell and it takes a lot of work on Hunter’s part and a lot of soul searching on her part for her to finally get there. For all that Hunter does to try and woo Emma and win her back he fails to do the one thing that might regain her trust. He doesn’t tell her why he left her without a word ten years ago. Not even when he lays all his cards on the table and tells her how he feels and what he needs from her. Honestly a lot of the early wooing didn’t feel real to me. Emma was too quick to move from agreeing to have coffee to seeing him all the time and banging their brains out while still denying they were in a relationship. What for me really lifted this book to better than okay was the fact that when Hunter finally does reveal to Emma why he left, why he hadn’t told her, it made perfect sense to me. I also liked the fact that even when Hunter’s secret is revealed it didn’t immediately result in them getting back together. That happens later after a traumatic event. The author is really strong when it comes to writing the profession of love scene leading to the happily ever after. She demonstrates that again in this story. The epilogue is also very sweet and romantic. Ryan and Nicole, Cody and Clover and the parents get significant roles in this story allowing us to see a bit more of their relationships which I enjoyed. Isaac was teriffic. Just a really nice romance.
Emma hasn't had much luck with men; she had her heart broken by the love of her life in high school and then the man she eventually married turned out to be a nightmare. When Hunter left her that fateful night so long ago he completely shattered her heart. She never understood why he didn't tell her he was leaving; so many questions left unanswered. Had she done something wrong? What was so terrible about her that he could walk away so easily and never look back? Maybe Hunter didn't love her as much as she thought he did? Even after so much time had passed, she never got over Hunter.
Hunter loved Emma with all his heart but he always felt something wasn't right inside him. He never told anyone how he felt because he was too scared. All he knew was that he had to leave Jetty Beach and all of the people he loved so much. It wasn't an easy decision but he knew he had to do it.
10 years later Hunter returns to Jetty Beach with some emotional scars from his service in the Marines but now things are very different for him. He isn't the same person he was all those years ago but he is happy with the man he has become. However, he regrets leaving his family and the love of his life.
After a bitter divorce, Emma finds herself back in Jetty Beach staying with her brother while her apartment is being fumigated. It's only for a few weeks so it shouldn't be too bad; but Jetty Beach is the last place she wanted to be right now or ever again. Her divorce has left her financially strapped and her options are limited. Her brother worries about where she lives but it's all she can afford. He convinces her to move in with him so that she can get back on her feet and re-group until she is in a better position to start over again. Emma decides to take him up on his offer; a decision that will change her life forever.
Soon afterward Emma & Hunter's paths cross and sparks fly. But Emma is guarded with her feelings because she knows she could never take Hunter breaking her heart again. Hunter knows he has a lot to atone for but he plans on doing everything he can to get Emma back. He is going to do whatever it takes to show Emma that he never stopped loving her and that they were meant to be together.
Together they have a lot of obstacles to overcome and aside from their history together Emma's ex-husband is another complication. Will their love for each other be enough to see them through all of the twists and turns they are about to face?
As with the other books in this series, I loved it from start to finish. The Jetty Beach series is one of my favourites!!! It was a quick sexy read with a HEA that won't disappoint...a must read! I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review and originally posted this on another website on October 22, 2016.
Your mission: Try not to be swayed by Hunter and what he is willing to do to win back the love he let go once ( Emma) a long time ago in the new excellent story that comes out of Jetty Beach. Sigh, I went into this book on a Sunday morning after a restless night sleep, I was rather grumpy, thinking maybe a book a two gallons of coffee would put my on a better frame of mind, turns out I didn't need the coffee, this book was all I would need!
Emma ends up going back to Jetty Beach after her apartment needs fumigated, to stay with her brother, she plans on staying just for a week but her brother convinces her to stay permanently. Since the divorce from her controlling husband she has been proud of herself doing things on her own but staying with her brother who is never home would be better then the little apartment she had… that is until small town life happens, she runs into, well actually he stalks her, her ex highschool boyfriend love of her life Hunter, boy who upped and left her in the middle of the night out of blue not reason why is sitting in the grocery store parking lot next to her car waiting for her, wanting to talk like old pals, nope she wants nothing to do with that she has sworn off dating, men, whatever… little does she know Hunter is willing to do whatever it takes to change her mind, and the man has the patience of a saint. I loved this one! Super funny, covert missions in the ditch? Sure why not! This funny sexy romantic tale got me out of my tired cranky funk and left me in a much better place, except for the slight book hangover ( cannot win them all ) as for did I complete the above mission? Yea no.. HEA was on point no way my ovaries would have let my brain ovride that one, 5 stars rating from me!! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader's Copy of this book
I'm kind of sad I didn't like this more. I've been excited for Hunters story for awhile. I absolutely loved the first two books of this series but the last two didn't really grab my attention. Although Hunter and Emma had an intriguing story I couldn't get past Hunter's need to organize a plan to get Emma back (hand written, step 1, step 2, etc.) That was odd. Then there was the complete contradiction of Emma. In one chapter she's describing her complete hatred for Hunter leaving her (10 years ago) and the next chapter she's fighting butterflies in her tummy because she's excited to see him. There was no build up from hating what he had done to accepting he might have made a mistake and making room in her life again.
Then once he finally convinces her to meet him for coffee...and she does...he's excusing himself to take phone calls. I just thought that as important as it was for him to win his only love back he would have made her a priority for the 30-60 minutes they were meeting for coffee.
In the end I just didn't feel a past connection of two high school sweethearts who dated 10 years ago and I didn't feel they rebuilt or reconnected any type of relationship in the present.
I do like this writer and will read future books but I think I might be done in Jetty Beach.
Hunter and Emma--I couldn't wait for their story, and it was worth it!
Hunter is amazing. After graduating high school, he left home without a word to conquer his inner demons. It broke Emma's heart, but he thought he was doing what was best for her and for the family that took him in.
Emma always thought Hunter left because of her and carried that pain with her for years.
These two deserved a second chance at love more than anyone. Hunter, understanding the mistakes he made in the past, proved to be the man Emma needs, wants, and loves. He never stopped loving her in all those years he spent away from her. I truly admire the man he became--loyal, trustworthy, caring. I know he should have shared that secret with Emma, and he also should have explained from the get-go why he left years ago, but I understood WHY he didn't.
Emma, she's strong and kind, but forgiving. Some may say too forgiving, too soon, but she never stopped loving Hunter either.
Home is where the heart is, and apparently, that's in Jetty Beach-the most awesome place to be!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This is not your typical second chance romance, so don't be fooled into thinking you've heard it all before. There are wonderful twists and turns to this plot that I didn't anticipate. After reading the first two Jetty Beach books, I thought Hunter would be one of those tough guys who is incapable of showing emotion, but I was wrong about him. One of the things that really stood out to me the most about this story is that Hunter is a really good guy. I wasn't prepared to like him, I mean - after all, he did leave Emma suddenly with no explanation and no communication for years. I had already decided he was a jerk before I started the book, but Hunter won me over with his kind and caring personality. And his Mission Parameters!! How could you not love his methodical approach to trying to win Emma back?? This book was the perfect combination of sweet + steam. I really loved it!
Hunter kind of made me laugh with his military list on how to win Emma back. After ten years apart Hunter comes home and Emma does everything in her power to keep away, but they have that magnetic pull to each other. Clover makes an appearance in this book like only Clover can and it made me love Claire's writing all the more, like she knew us readers needed a smidge more of Clover after the her book finished! The heat between Hunter and Emma is beyond the world, his tenderness with her feelings is down right sweet and when she finally figures out what his been doing the whole time, you will cry tears of joy! Again a great addition the series
dnf'd at 55%. I'm so disappointed because one of my best 2022 reads was a Claire Kingsley. I think my real issue here is that I wanted so much to be entirely immersed in a book universe that even when the Jetty Beach series was *obviously* not hitting all my high marks, I continued. These books are too short to allow for the necessary character development to excuse crappy behavior and tbh, the spicy bits aren't sexy. But ymmv on that... for me, the language choices were not doing it for me. Anyway, I'll come back around to Claire's newer works once I've had a palate cleanse. I enjoyed the Dirty Martini Running Club Book #1 so much that I know she's got the goods I shop for!
After meeting Hunter, I couldn’t wait to hear his story. Emma and Hunter were high school sweethearts until he Up and left in the middle of the night without a word of why. A decade later, Hunter returns to Jetty Beach, no longer the angry boy he used to be. Now he’s a grown man with a good heart and patience. Patience that he’ll need to get back the girl he left behind all those years ago. Hunter and Emma’s story pulled at my heartstrings. Claire Kingsley writes beautiful stories with so much passion and heart. I absolutely loved this book!! Definitely recommend!
Hunter left ten years ago and went into the marines, he left without anyone knowing except a note. Emma was devastated and went on to get married to a man she is now divorced from. She is going to get herself back and doesn’t want a man. They both end up back in Jetty Beach. Hunter sees her and the chemistry is still there and later when she see him it’s still there for her to but how can she trust that he won’t leave again. Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing Book. So many feels.
I was dying to read Hunter's story. Everybody loves a good backstory. It just goes to show you how your childhood can shape your future path and sometimes you have to take steps to correct that. I couldn't imagine the heartbreak Emma went through and then the shock of running into Hunter again so many years later. I'm glad they were able to find each other again. Hunter has such a good heart.
Claire did it again!! I feel in love with Hunter and his passion for his family and Emma's struggles to regain her self.. I laughed and cried threw this whole book. Such heartbreak and true love shown. Received this free as a AR reader and loved every minute!! You'll love it from begin to end!! :)
I have fallen in love with Jetty Beach and Claire Kingsley while reading this series. I have wanted to read Hunter's story since the first book. I have a soft spot for Marines because I am married to one. I am so happy that Hunter and Emma got their second chance. This book made me get teary and I am not usually one to cry because of a book.
