enjoyed this little glimpse into fashion & specifically how women influence trends. as much as that was the intended focus of this book, i felt a lot of it strayed from fashion & bled too much into each women’s life, work, & relationships. i understand a synopsis was needed to give context, but when each women only gets a single page & half of that space is taken up by detailing who she married & what movies she starred in, we lose the point.
the women chosen felt arbitrary & instead seemed like just the obvious superstars of each era instead of actual groundbreaking women in the fashion industry. the 100 women were also overwhelming white & american, which was a big letdown.
the pictures chosen of the women was also a weird ick i had. some featured weird paparazzi pictures and others were young childhood photos which was strange considering it was a book about fashion? why not show pictures from the fashion part of their life?
still an interesting, novel, & eye-catching coffee table book that’s fun to flip through even though it really doesn’t provide any information you don’t already know.
This is a little departure from my usual reading. I stumbled across this one at my local library, and I had so much fun flipping through the pages, seeing which styles they chose to feature with each of the women. Now, I’m no fashionista myself, but I can appreciate the styles of different eras and what other people are into, even if I’m not quite sure I could ever pull off the same look. It’s a pretty cover, so whether you’re looking for a cute coffee table or accent book or looking for a bookish gift idea for a friend, I think it’s a great choice. I’m so glad I was able to snag it at the library, and I will now be returning it to let others jump in on the fun! QOTD: Do you have a favorite style trend? #bookstagram #RebeccaReviewedIt
Appealing coffee table book that mostly does exactly what I wanted from it (nice inspiration & some useful discussion of how fashion waves formed and impacted each other). I don't think it will be a forever keeper, but it's a pleasing entry in my fashion references.
I have some judgements of the text, mainly to do with Blanchard swerving into white feminism in the course of trying to make subjects like Coco Chanel sound inspiring as well as influential. A few entries almost literally provoke Eric Andre's "Do you think Margaret Thatcher [...] effectively utilized girl power by funneling money into illegal paramilitary death camps in Northern Ireland?"
An advantage about books stands in the fact that you gain a surplus of knowledge. Luisa Casati, Anna Piaggi, Phoebe Philo, Molly Goddard, Jeny Howorth, Theda Bara, Mona von Bismarck, and Tavi Gevinson roamed unbeknownst to me before this reading. This book encourages women to pursue their individuality through sartorial choices.
100 Women. 100 Styles: The Women Who Changed the Way We Look.
