The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."

Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.

This series is pretty popular at our school - fast, quirky stories featuring kids at Ella Mentry School and their weird teachers/staff. I hadn't devoted time to reading any of them yet, but have enjoyed following Mr. Gutman on Facebook. With the closure of many schools due to Covid-19, he began reading his books via Facebook live, a few chapters a day, a new book each week. This was the first one that we listened to.
We loved it! He reads with expression, and even my older kids chuckle at the regular puns and repeated phrases that make these books so catchy. In one way they're kind of cringey but also dang funny in a kid-humor way. They remind me a little bit of the Magic Treehouse series, in that you find a pattern that works and stick with it for a million hundred titles. My 3rd grader loves it the most, but we're all enjoying these read alouds.

I got a few of these books to listen to while running the Monterey Half Marathon, figuring nice light-hearted easy-to-hear books would be better than some World War II tragic lovefest involving a missing horse and legacy china. And I was right. This book and the previous one in the series were perfect.

Problem with listening to them back-to-back was that some jokes are repeated in the books so that was kind of annoying. But this one was still fun with the dentist encouraging tooth decay so she could get a new car.

This dentist wanted everyone to eat candy so that they would NEED a dentist! That's not very nice.

Many cute (corny) jokes. The dentist telling the kids to eat lots of candy is a nice twist. My 5 and 8 year old just love these books!

I love this book. I pre ordered it on amazon months before it came out. It was funny how the dentist didn’t want the kids to have clean teeth because she wanted money when the kids went to the dentist. I loved it! READ IT!!!
