Fire magic. Twisted alchemy. Lovers at odds. Strong friendships. Fantasy folklore. A bit of kissing.

Eh, I guess it sounds all right.

I was fortunate enough to read an early version of this story and HOLY HELL. Y'all. It is sooooo good. Fire. Magic. Alchemy. Heartbreaking, life-altering moral dilemmas. Characters who make you Feel All The Things. Add this to your TBR, preorder it, do it. Do it now. I have no doubt you'll love it as much as I do.

Love and fire and magic and everything I want in a fantasy novel with one of the best sounding titles ever.

I’m not usually a reader of fantasy, but Sam Taylor’s WE ARE THE FIRE sucked me in and never let go. What initially drew me into this story was the gorgeous prose and incredible world building. But what kept me, was its characters: Pran and Oksana. They were so well-developed and REAL that I didn’t want their story to end (I find myself missing them, even now!) I loved so much about them--their conflicts, foibles, and just plain humanness--that I needed to know what would happen to them. If you ...more

In a world where children are ripped away from their families and are "changed"- a painful alchemical experience that gives these kids the power to wield fire elemental magic- two people fight for a better future: our MCs Oksana and Pran.
The children who are taken are brutally trained and punished if they don’t wield their fire powers correctly. In addition, their uniforms involve antlers (yes, ANTLERS!) and eye drops that turn their eyes black (basically turns them into monsters!)

If you like fiery fantasy where the stakes are high, the heroes are flawed, and everything’s gotta burn, I recommend you check out WE ARE THE FIRE by Sam Taylor. I was lucky enough to read an ARC. You can get the book in February... perfect way to make the winter weather start smoldering. It's like a smashcut of The Hunger Games, with fire magic thrown in, so - yeah. Read it.

A well-paced fantasy steeped in folklore and alchemy. Deeply developed characters and a sharply written plot give WE ARE THE FIRE by Sam Taylor a dramatic intensity that readers will fall in love with. Perfect for fans of CURSED by Thomas Wheeler.

A riveting fantasy that had me spellbound.

When they were children, Oksana and Pran were stolen from their homes and countries and turned into demons. Fire-wielding Tuliikobrets for Emperor Juhan. Pran will do anything to get their freedom from the fort. Oksana is determined to help her friends, especially Pran get the medicine he needs for his bad leg (from all the transformations and experimenting). They both choose dangerous paths that might tear them apart before the emperor does. Both are t

This was such an interesting read that grabbed me right from its explosive beginning and kept me engrossed right until the end. The use of both alchemy and folklore was truly unique and exciting to me, and I loved both the main characters Pran and Oksana, and the relationship they had with one another. Not to mention, I am very into things about people wielding fire, so everything about this story ticked many boxes for what I love to read in fantasy. An excellent book--I highly recommend! I love how Pran and Oksana evolve and grow in this story. It doesn't gloss over conflict of the heart and head, nor of how quickly the realities of a situation change.
Pran and Oksana may often be at crossed purposes, but you're always certain of their love and intentions, though they often aren't.
A tense, satisfying read even if you're not into much YA, like me.

I was fortunate to have beta-read the original story and have been a fan ever since.

I read an early version of this book and I'm thrilled it will see bookshelves. The character development is so robust and real: both Oksana and Pran are fully-fleshed out people who I love and who infuriate me at the same time. I haven't read such a dynamic relationship in a long time—where nothing is black and white, both sides are valid, and the heartache is so real. I can't wait to reread this when it's released!

Update: Reread this in arc form and I love it even more now. Wow.

I had the privilege of reading an early version of this book and Pran and Oksana have my heart! This book is fierce and bold. The endurance of Pran to believe in better when there's little hope for it, and Oksana's strength in insisting on doing good when there is little opportunity -- just tugs at my heartstrings. You're not ready for their whirlwind struggle to command their own destinies <3 ...more

I came across this book because the cover knocked me off my feet. My friend is friends with the author, so when she showed me the cover, I was enthralled. It’s gorgeous and a little bit frightening and a kind of powerful. Plus, it sounded amazing too. Armies of children forced to undergo transformations to fight for a cruel king. It definitely sounded like something I would like to try out. Trigger warnings: grief, torture

This book was so much more painful than I expected it to be.

We Are the Fire caught my attention from the very first sentence and didn't let go until the very last one. In a world where alchemy can turn children into fire-breathing soldiers, you might expect the plot to take the driver's seat, but this book is really about the growth and transformation of its two main characters, Pran and Oksana, stolen from their homelands and forced to serve the villainous emperor. When their goals and objectives set them against each other, and their beliefs about what ...more

It's hard to pick one thing that I liked best about WE ARE THE FIRE by Sam Taylor. It's got fire magic, beautiful and immersive prose, and super sharp pacing, but the relationship between the two MCs (Pran and Oksana) was probably my favorite. These are not your cookie-cutter heroes. Pran and Oksana are raw. They're flawed, and nuanced, and that's what makes them feel like real people. And it's also a big part of what had me clinging to the pages to find out what would happen next, because while ...more

The key to a good story for me is that I'm wondering, "Where is this going? How is this problem going to be resolved?" We Are The Fire has that in spades. I had NO idea how the main characters were going to get out of the situation, and I was not expecting or anticipating the ending. It kept me going from start to finish, and this is the first book I read in less than 24 hours in ages.

The whole premise of the book is that children are kidnapped and transformed into fire-breather soldiers and ba
