No Apologies

Rate this book
Everyone says the future is female, but that change is happening right now. Across
the planet, women's voices are being heard like never before...

Joanne Brookfield has spent two decades working in the world of comedy, as both a journalist and a stand-up comedian. Over coffee, wine, laughter and tears, she's talked with the women of comedy about every aspect of their lives, from the butterflies of their first gigs to the hell of their worst. From writing, gigging and touring, to the times they almost gave up, these women share the ways they've lived the feminist war cry of 'nevertheless, she persisted' and the triumphs they've enjoyed as a result.

Representing a multitude of backgrounds, styles and content, the women in comedy cover the full spectrum of human experience and this book celebrates them all, from the trailblazers who paved the way to the talented new stars who are actively
transforming the landscape of performance.

A funny and feisty read, at its core No Apologies is about the power of women, their voices and their stories.

A really great book chronicling women in comedy in (mostly) Australia - well written with insightful interviews. I saw Joanne Brookfield speak at the Wheeler Centre and it piqued my interest, and the book did not disappoint. A recommendation for anyone who loves the Australian comedy scene, or has a particular interest in women in the arts

Some really insightful anecdotes about the Australian comedy scene and lessons for lots of comics out there. It was very centred on comics and standup so if you're looking for a broad read on the topic, this may no be a relevant read for you. It was lovely to read about the rooms where I've had gigs and about the comics I know, I felt like I got to know more about them.

Amazing to read about the journey and bts of female comedians, especially in the Australian comedy scene of a traditionally white male arena.
