Update: this might be my ..... lost count.... re-read. Still tried to make it last... it goes by so fast!! So much happening and all of it important and wonderful and heart-pounding and intense! I just LOVE THIS BOOK! Got the hottest (in my humble opinion) sex scenes of the whole series. But what do you expect when there are feline predators involved? =^.^=

OK, read the ARC IN A HURRY!! Noticed AJ added a new scene toward the end - holy shit!!

Lemme back up and give a somewhat proper review.

This book was freakin' AWESOME!!
* Heat A++
* Bad ass H/h A++
* Plot!!! OMG the plot!! A++++
* Cover!! A+++

I mean, I don't know what else you can ask for. For loyal readers of this series, AJ just widened the aperture (always wanted to use that word) of the world EXPONENTIALLY with this book!

You cannot, DO NOT read this as a stand alone. You'll get lost right away. You won't know all the little bread crumbs that AJ's been leading readers on with since book 1. Book 1!!! Lemme just say, this is ONE PATIENT AUTHOR! (and rather sadistic and evil in a way, reminds me of the main baddies... I mean that as a compliment, AJ!)

In typical AJ style, the Prologue and Epilogue begins with first-person narration by a character that appears in the book but who is not either H or h. This narrator happens to be a traitor that is introduced in book 1.

She had me at "page one." When the Pure traitor starts telling her story, I'm like HOLY SHIT! And now I need to go back to BOOk 1 to re-read what went down and connect all the dots in every book since because she's even worse (in a way) than the ultimate baddie!

Then you get into the MCs from Chapter 1. Readers who are far more discerning than I noticed Maximus right away from Book 2. He's the COmmander of the Chosen, the Dark King's personal guard. So right there you know - badass, alpha male. He's always seemed kinda uptight to me. Now in this book you find out why. And when he lets loose, WATCH OUT!

description

And the heroine - been debating with my GR friends months before we ever got our grubby hands on the ARC what might play out in terms of Max's love interest. Cover def hints at the "possibility" but we didn't know how it was going to happen. I gotta tell you, I LOVE how Aj made it happen! Not what I expected. So much better! Ariel is pretty damn amazing. I just love her sass and her cursing and the way she pulls Max's chain (hint hint)

description

It's a whirlwind ride. It's a whole new world! I love that we get to meet such AWESOME COOL NEW CHARACTERS!!! And we see how the characters we love link together in the overall tapestry that's being masterfully woven. Almost all my favs are in this book! And the common thread between them, as AJ said herself, in terms of the father-son relationships, and I'll also say really pulled at my heart strings. Made me cry (esp. for TAL!!!) and I love books that can make me feel so deeply.

This one has it all folks-- ACTION, SUSPENSE, MYSTERY, SEX, LOVE, HUMOR... what else can you ask for???

A gazillion stars!!

OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!! (CAN'T NOT TYPE IN CAPITALS) - AFTER THE SNEAK PEEKS THROUGH CHAPTER 3 AND 1 PIVOTAL SCENE FROM CHAPTER 4 (AJ, COME ON, YOU'VE GIVEN US 1 PEEK OF CHAP 4, YOU MIGHT AS WELL GIVE US THE WHOLE THING... HONESTLY!), I CAN TELL YOU RIGHT NOW THIS IS A FIVE STAR READ, HANDS DOWN AND FEET TIED. I'M SALIVATING SO BADLY FOR THIS BOOK THERE'S NOT ENOUGH PAPER TOWELS IN MY HOUSE TO WIPE MY CHIN!!!!!

OMG!!!!

Having now read Goya's book, I'm appreciating this one even more for its introduction of Goya, the Tiger King, the world of the Beasts and Lesser Beasts... and the possibility of DRAGONS!!!!! MUST READ!

ARC Update: THAT SCENE TOWARD THE END!!! RAMSES!!! I have no idea what the future holds, no idea whatsoever, and I'm soooooo eager and breathless to find out!!

LOVE. THIS. BOOK.

Note: I am a beta reader for this book. I'm sure the ARC and real deal will be even better, tho not sure how much better it can get when it's already a FLAMING 5+++++ STARS!

I don't know where to begin. This book is just so unexpected! I've been anticipating it since the cover reveal sometime last year. And I get a sense who's the MCs. My GR friends and I have theorized the plot and what might happen quite a bit, but nothing prepared me for what actually went down!!

description

So the MCs:

Maximus, also known as the Dark Ones' Commander. He's the leader of the Chosen, the personal guards of

Maximus in previous books has never quite garnered my attn, like he has for some of my GR friends. But what do I know???!!! Obviously NOTHING!! I never paid attn to Seth either and Book 7 was/is my favorite of the series! Not sure now tho, it might just have been dethroned.

But boy was I wrong about Maximus. He always seemed so BORING. Like stick up his ass BORING. But he's one flaming hot ALPHA male! The most alpha of all the H's in this series. Well, I guess he kinda has to be if he's the leader of the Chosen, but still. I mean DANG!!

Can't do the cover model justice by selecting any other face, so I'll just go with body..., well would be a shame to cut Mr. Cavil's face...

description

Now, I'm not a fan of hairy men... and it's not that Maximus is all that hairy from the descriptions, but I'm really starting to appreciate his type of hairy men!

Anywho... Once I pick my tongue off the floor... Maximus has so many layers and shows a side of himself in this book you're unlikely to see anywhere else. It's his book with his heroine. And he only shows this side to her.

So pay attention, people!!

Ariel Kyles is an ex-military FBI agent. But is she really? And she's been a thorn in Max's side for a year now. Pretty badass herself... in sooooo many ways!

* what she becomes
* the way she teases him
* the way she obsesses over him
* the way she CURSES!!! hahahahahahahaha!

I love it all!

The freaking PLOT!

This has got to be one of the fastest-moving plots in the series. One roller-coaster after another! NONSTOP! It's INSANE!! And I totally love it!!

The other characters!!!!!

* Tal & Ishtar
* Benji
* Clara, Eli and Annie
* the Creature!!
* the evil Pure traitor
* Ryu
* and let's not forget all the secrets Max finds out about 1/3 of the way into the book!!

OMG! I feel like this series has just accelerated into a whole new dimension of GREATNESS. Totally unexpected, totally riveting.

And totally heart-poundingly GORGEOUS.

For the first time in her existence, as both a familiar and a human, she comprehended fully, infinitely, what it meant to make love. What it was to love a male with her body, heart and soul.

Oh boy. This book dropped soooo many bombs right from the get-go! I should just give up on trying to theorize at this point… Truth be told, Dark Obsession veered off into a slightly different direction which I initially felt apprehensive about. But after some thought, I realized Aja James made the right move (duhhhh). Readers had already been introduced to shifters like Ishtar, so this book was essentially a much-needed exploration of the shifter population and how they fit into this universe. And I must say, the introduction of shifter mythologies and new characters did not disappoint!

Honestly, it took me a while to warm up to Maximus and Ariel as a couple and I think that was purely because I didn’t know what to make of the Ariel–Simca situation. But somehow James made it work with her sorcery and in the end Maximus and Ariel just seemed so right! . I really liked Ariel! She was such a unique heroine - so funny, playful and vibrant! I think Maximus described her as ‘larger than life’ at one point, and that pretty much sums up her character. The way she knew how to cheer up Maximus and loosen him up was so endearing! I must say, Maximus hadn’t been a character I had ever paid much attention but his journey in Dark Obsession completely changed that!

All in all Maximus and Ariel were perfect for each other. Both had an otherness about themselves they had to seek to understand and come to terms with, so it was really cool to see them go on this action packed journey together. Their jealousy and possessiveness over each other was so amusing and SCORCHING HOT! I loved the showdown they had with other shifters to show their claim over each other - it was so badass!! And when they gave into their primal urges... WOWOWOW (I think they almost rivalled Jade and Seth at one point).

“If you take me,” he rumbled low, “you’ll never take another male as long as I live.”
She dug her sharp little fingernails into his ass.
“Fair. And I’ll rip out the throat of any female who looks at you twice.”

Similar to Dark Pleasures, I found myself being more interested in the secondary characters (up until the first 40% anyways, it levelled out from there on out). And now that I think about it, both books had TAL showing up and stealing the spotlight... My heart BROKE for Tal all over again, I just want him to LIVE IN PEACE, dammit! He doesn't deserve to suffer! Those tender moments between Ishtar and Tal just about destroyed me! But in saying all of this, I really do appreciate how James doesn’t shy away from portraying his PTSD and the journey of healing, so I thought that was brilliantly touched upon.

As always, time for my honorable mentions! Of course, I can’t forget the super sexy RAMSES. Why is he so dark and alluring? (I wonder how he’s going to rule because he’s so different from his predecessor and it seems like he has his own plans?) I also really liked the introduction of Rhys, he seems very charming. And Ryu… can’t forget about Ryu. Gosh this scene made me laugh so hard:

“You like to call her Bumble Bee when you’re feeling romantic, and she calls you Dark Chocolate Fudge Arabian—”
“Enough,” Ryu cut her off, swiping a hand over his face, which was hot with embarrassment.

I have to admit, something James does really well in this series is the depiction of family/found families. I feel like that's often ignored in stories for simple convenience but just simply seeing Clara and Annie or Tal and Benji is enough to make me burst with joy!

Wish me luck on the next book… If I stop posting, it’s because Pure Providence killed me.

4,5 'obsessive' stars

Maximus had my attention since the very moment he first appeared in Dark Longing If I remember correctly my first comment about this series was about him. And his book being eight in a series this was a damned long wait. But a well delivered one. I've loved Maximus from the start. What else would you expect of me? He was a general in the Roman Empire, of course, I fell for him. And I think I fell in love with him in this book all over again. He was just so wonderful and gorgeous and badass. Also, I must say that

He was insanely, ovary-explodingly gorgeous.

Some picture inspiraton for Maximus... Just an appetizer, go search for naughty ones yourself *wink*

Sadly, I wasn't that thrilled about the Simca situation. And I'm not sure what exactly to think about Ariel. As much as I love men of this series, I don't get along with females very well. The only ones I actually liked were Ishtar and Clara.

As for Max and Ariel together, I think they are perfect for each other. They make a great couple, I only wished for a little more emotions. I know there wasn't exactly a time for some deeply emotional declarations of love because the whole book was packed with action and wow we were fighting the whole time. Yes, I say we because you gotta believe me, I would fight alongside them as well if I could. But as I say, besides the animal lust between them I didn't feel much more. Or maybe that's just because the previous couple - Jade & Seth - had such an emotional, heartbreaking relationship that I had a feeling like Max and Ariel are lacking emotions. Well, but every couple is different. They sure had the hottest sex.
However, there were some tender moments.

For the first time in her existence, as both a familiar and a human, she comprehended fully, infinitely, what it meant to make love. What it was to love a male with her body, heart and soul.
He loved this female. Loved everything about her. He loved her sass, her intellect, her badass attitude. He loved her passion, her competitiveness, even her over-the-top possessiveness. He loved the way she pushed him, the way she partnered him, the way they fit together like two halves of a whole.

And the reason might also be that when Tal and Ishtar are in the picture, I basically don't have eyes for anyone else. And God, they broke me. I get that after what Tal was through, he can't just move on as nothing happened. But it breaks my heart how they are both suffering. If there is a couple that deserves a HEA they are undoubtedly Tal & Ishtar. I mean, look at this, doesn't it make you cry?

She knew he wanted to be the best male for her. She knew he thought she deserved the sun, the moon and the very stars, and he wanted to be the one to give them to her. But she didn’t want any of that. She just wanted him. Tal-Telal was her entire universe. She lived for his rare smiles. She soared for his chuckles and laughs.
“You are Mated to a broken male,” he rasped harshly. “You cannot fix—” “I don’t want to fix you,” she said fiercely, squeezing his hand as tightly as she dared. “You are not broken. And even if you were, shattered into a million pieces, I would still love every single one of them. All the fragments and shards. All the sharp and jagged edges. Every single part of you is beautiful to me, Tal. I love it all.”

And I'm a mess now. I hope that someday they will be able to leave the past behind and just enjoy life together with their family.

Ok, back to the story. I'm very intrigued by one of the new characters.

“Rhys Evans, at your service. Welsh in origin. Lived almost a thousand years. Still wet behind the ears compared to old Max here, and perhaps some of you as well."

Hello there!! I'm a sucker for wings and I think that Rhys will give my harem a good run for their money. It's too early to say but I'm pretty sure he will become one of my favorites. But I was shocked what happened to

And if course I can't finish this review without mentioning Ramses. Seriously, every next book I'm more drawn to him. I want to know his story, his origin, what exactly is he planning. And it was practically confirmed what I suspected from the start. I believe that flashbacks from his past will be very interesting. Crossed fingers we will get his book soon. I already see him with some Pure female, no human or Dark for him. Considering that he is only 'tolerating' Pure Ones it will be so awesome to see him fall for one. That would be a winner story, I tell you.

Apparently, a certain someone needs 'an excuse' for stalking gorgeous men on the Internet 😉😉😉😉😉 So come on, ladies!! Show me some perfection! After all, Maximus is my second favorite one 😉😉😉😉😉

Again, I will use review space to ramble a bit about my creative process with this book.

As mentioned before, I love the writing process because, for me, it's so organic. Many things are unplanned. I know broad strokes about where things might go, character personalities, but not much else. Even the connections that readers say are so intricately woven and that I must have some sort of master plan--I've got news for you folks--there is no master plan!! :P

The story evolves as I write it. Sometimes, it goes in a completely different direction than I intended.

This is one of those times.

And I absolutely loved writing this book because I got to watch the story unfold as I was writing it. I couldn't wait to see where it would go.

One unintentional theme that is woven throughout this story is the focus on the father-son relationship. Only at about half way through did I realize the thread that just kept showing itself. Several father-son relationships are highlighted in this book:

* Eli and Ryu
* Tal and his longing for his lost son
* Maximus and the search for his father
* the Creature and the son it can't claim

I wonder if these relationships will ever be "resolved." My heart goes out to the fathers and sons who are/ have been lost to each other.

What truths will be revealed in the process?

Keep reading the series to find out!

At first, when I thought of typing up this review, I thought I would use my usual format. Not that I have a set structure mind you, but it seems like one. Then I thought "F*ck that!" because it's not like this story deserves anything less than the rambling, passionate thoughts I had while reading it. So rather than hide everything under spoilers, I'm going to lay it all out right here. So if you don't want to be spoiled, stop here knowing that I loved this book, I love this series, and I highly recommend it!

I'm in so deep and I have no intention of finding my way out. I've already got Pure Providence downloaded so I'm off to go deeper.

Dark Obsession: A novel of the Dark Ones

Three months ago. Maximus Justus Copernicus is the Commander of the Chosen and personal guard to the Dark King. His eternal familiar, Simca, is stretched out on his bed cleaning herself. She's contemplating the bipedal species, especially Maximus. She watches him step out of the shower, towel drying his hair and still fuming about something. Simca playfully distracts him from his thoughts. Maximus falls asleep with Simca stretched across his chest, purring loudly.

Present day. Ariel Kyles is a FBI agent who is suppose to hand Maximus information on the fight clubs and Project Evergreen, "a top secret government genetic engineering project to create super soldiers." Maximus hears a female voice yell "Trap! Run!" All he can think about is saving Simca and the female agent. He is shot with a vampire-killer bullet. Simca jumps on his chest and digs out the bullet. Maximus is in a wounded daze watching Simca pounce and kill her targets, and Agent Kyles fire shots at the shooters. Simca is hit multiple times. She jumps and lands on Agent Kyles. Simca's "body unraveled midair, and a shower of stardust enfolded the agent in a blinding glow. And then -- nothing."

Of course, in this series there is always at least two subplots tying into the plot. We meet Goya, a Siberian Tiger King, and his subjects, the beasts and lesser beasts -- Leti (King Cobra), Rhys (Golden Eagle), Cassandra (Cheetah), Roark (Snake), Luka (Lion) and Apolla (Marital Eagle).

We learn who the Pure Ones' traitor is and the research this being is performing on human, and Pure and Dark Ones, alike. And we have several of the Pure and Dark Ones have cameo subplots, weaving their threads into future books. Finally we learn more about the Creature and what matters to it.

The characters are all friends, some more than others, to this reader. The subplots are intricately woven into the plot, with some subplots weaving into future books. I would like to know what is happening with Ishtar and Tal. I'm also curious about the father-son relationships between Eli and Ryu, and Goya and Maximus. I would like more of the Creature's story to be revealed too. The world building is constructing new species for future plots and creating a new reality for the existing characters. The descriptions are clear and can be imagined with the mind's eye. This novel should be read in order as there is so much happening and revealed in this book. The sex scenes are scorching hot. I recommend this series. It's awesome! Now for Dalair's novella, Pure Providence.

Dark Obsession is the 8th book in the ever-engaging Pure/Dark Ones series; this one focuses on Maximus, a loyal member of the Dark Ones' council who is known to be a bit of a loner with a panther as his constant companion. His current mission is to meet in person with an FBI agent (Ariel) that he has been communicating with online in order to gain some insight as to what she knows about his people and her involvement in the grander scheme of things. The meeting, however, goes horribly wrong when they are ambushed by all sides and face impossible odds.

What I liked:
--- I found Maximus' history and storyline fascinating - he was a very intricate character that I enjoyed learning more about
--- We are introduced to another sub-population of paranormal entities that fit into a category all their own - sets the series up for future growth in that area
--- More larger scheme elements are revealed that hook me further into this series

What I didn't like as much:
--- I never connected with Ariel as a character- maybe it was because she wasn't introduced previously so I had no attachment to her; it also mostly weirded me out when she "merged" with another being (not going to get into details beyond that so as not to include any spoilers) - and it felt like the reader was missing info that should have been revealed sooner about her "role" in the Medusa organization - it felt rushed introducing her and centering the story around her without having been provided more context previously
--- Along similar lines, some hints in earlier books would have made Maximus' identity reveal more exciting I think - I like having some things come up in earlier books to get you thinking one way and then come back around a book or two later so the reader has some "a-ha!" moments

Overall, another really good plot read in a series that I continue to enjoy!

Plot --- 4/5
Main Characters --- Maximus: 4.5/5; Ariel: 2.5/5
Supporting Cast --- 4.5/5
Steam Level --- 2/5 (it was definitely steamy, but I didn't connect to the female MC, so it didn't do it as much for me; the steam meter is my personal gauge)
Violence --- Yes (possible triggers)
Language --- not egregious
POV --- 3rd

I was very generously provided with an advance copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review.

My deepest gratitude to the author for the gift of the ARC. I'm so honored. Here's my honest review.

The HEA couple in every book in the series has been so captivating and so perfect for each other. Wishing I had a new word that went beyond "perfect" to describe Max and Ariel's pairing. I knew beforehand from the blurb that Ariel wasn't all human, that she was created in a lab. I also knew that Max was a vampire and "other" from the previous books. Max's past was unbelievably captivating. I loved that he wasn't a tortured hero! His "other" heritage was mind-blowing to me!

Max was alone all of his life except for the constant company of the black panther, his Familiar. He saved her when she was only a cub and named her Simca, "his gladness and joy". Her name for him was simply "Hers". This story began when Simca gave up her life to save his.

I was awestruck and mesmerized while following the journey Max, Ariel, & Simca's soul had to take to find themselves, who they were meant to be, and how it would all work out! I was so crazy in love with both Max and Ariel. Loved the happy ending. What a magnificent fantasy!

The fight scenes were as explosive, as fast and furious as expected! Totally the signature of this series! So! Was there anything I disliked? Anything I had a problem with? Of course! Smart villains were necessary! They enhanced the plot! They pulled us in & incited our needs to defeat them and to smash their bones into powder! Yes, I disliked how the villains here were four or five steps ahead of my good guys. Moreover, I hated when good guys were enslaved and lost themselves under the unbreakable mind-control power created by the villains. Hated that with so much passion too!

Oh, just to keep my honest view complete, I had to share that the love scenes were supernova hot! And you didn't need to imagine what I meant, please pick up the book and start reading! 🔥

Here's the happy ending worthy of my Five Fantastic Star Rating:

After two millennia of being alive, he was finally
no longer alone. And Dark Goddess willing,
he never will be again.
They would always have each other.
"Yes," he rumbled in his deep, husky voice
and touched his forehead to hers, closing his eyes.
"My Mate. My love."
"We will conquer it all together."

5++ Solid Exploding 💥 OMG ✨🌟💫Stars!

As you can tell I really loved this one.
There is so much to this one that before I do a full review, I feel I need to do a reread first.
This one has so much character & world build...
so much emotion & intensity.....
so much MORE I feel the need to wallow in it until I am purring like Simca!

3/19/19 'My Reread Review'
I dived into this one on my 1st read like a person who had been trapped in the desert would a pool of life saving water.

Then I went almost immediately for a second leisurely swim.

I could so live in this amazing and fantastic world.
Filled with action, suspense, mystery and adult romance.
This story is edgy and fills you with anticipation. It is thrilling and magical.

The evil ones are everywhere. It's almost impossible to know who to trust. Even the one you love could have been turned into one of their minions.

New asecepts come to light. New ideas are thrown into the mix.

Maximus and Ariel/Simca are amazing. Sizzling. Intense & Amorous

And maybe......
Could it be?
Are there really Dragons in this world?!
Rhys says yes. Others say no.
What is true & what is myth?

This series blows my mind and takes me on a ride I NEVER want to end.

Top Notch series that easily competes with and rubs shoulders with my #1 favorites.

🎤You need cooling, baby I’m not fooling
I’m gonna send you back to schooling
Way down inside, honey you need it
I’m gonna give ya my love
I’m gonna give ya every inch of my love🎵

Since I was gifted with an ARC, Bless You Ms James for the Honor and Joy, I don’t want to spill all the sweet (and sweaty) details but if you don’t hear a throbbing guitar riff come May’s official release date (and yes, I have had my Kindle download on pre-order for weeks, too) as you dive into this delicious truly series changing story, you are one frigid bitch. Sure, Max and Ariel/Simca go full throated ‘Still of the Night’ crossed with ‘Feels Like the First Time’ 24x7 loving immediately but they’ve been platonic pussycat soulmates for thousands of years.

However, this story isn’t epic because of the numerous claw-marks on their mutual backs, but because of the massive game-changers hitting left-right-left-right throughout. Non-Overly Spoily-Spoiler Hints : Bless The Beasts & The Children -
Goya, O-Boya!
My Creature, Come To Daddy
Tal, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart
Ramseeeeeeeessssss
(Wh)ittle Benji
The good news, there is hope for Zombie Dalair...and the tiny hints of the pasts loss of his love to another are really well timed to build that anticipation bit by bit without a full divulge.
The so bad though it’s the kind of bad that is excellent for a NYT BestSeller storyline : Wan’er.

There is devastation in this story for some newly intro’d characters and fear for some favorite characters...there’s complete joy for the young’uns and bittersweet moments of father/son respect, pride and love. Standout, 2 Siberian Tigers on a Mountain staring at one another. Like ‘Field of Dreams’ “Hey Dad, you wanna have a catch”. The Feels!

But I absolutely LOVED this book. These two just captured my heart and I honestly don't think I can wait long in picking up the 9th book because its the hero's dads book and many he won my heart too!

Summary
Dark Obsession is a story that begins with our delightful hero, Maximus and his pet or companion I should say. While out on a routine mission meeting up with Ariel Kyles, who is an government agent but also was created in the lab and working for Medusa, she is merged with a black panther's spirit and Ariel who was once without a soul, is now having desires, feelings and raw needs and her connection to Maximus is becoming more tangible than ever imagined. But Maximus and Ariel are on a mission together to explore his other primal side, the one that he has suppressed, and while on his journey they come across family and those living in a hidden world in the wilds of Russia. But there are secrets that out of their control and their love will be tested in ways that they could never imagine...

My Outlook
Dark Obsession was such a brilliant story that had me in love immediately with Maximus and Ariel. I just loved these two together and seeing them grow together in their relationship was so brilliantly done. Honestly, the more that I read this author the more that I fall in love. And honestly the diversity is so flawless and perfectly done. We need more romance with this type of diversity implemented because it just has such a genuine feel to it. I also adored this unique romance that is developed. There is such powerful character growth with both Maximus and Ariel. But my heart honestly broke with the beginning scene. I absolutely adored seeing these two together and the way that they assist each other on their journey. What I really loved was the way that Maximus is able to connect with his father. I don't always love flashbacks, but in this story, I really adored them. I loved the way that we get to meet Maximus' dad haha and man his story just broke me. I can't wait for his book though, because if anyone deserves a mate and to be in love, its most definitely him. I really was floored by the later part of the story, this author really blew my MIND but somehow I had faith that she would deliver the HEA and it was so well done and I can't wait to see our groups of vampires and our animal spirits come together to fight the evil Medusa.

Overall View
Dark Obsession is a story that will capture your heart, body and soul! Its a sensual paranormal romance with some fantastical realism combined that will stun you in its emotional depths, gravitate you in its sensual scenes, and leave you addicted to this beautiful world building that is pure magic! A TREASURE OF A FIND!

This time,i was asked to re-read by Goya ánd by Max.....
After he and Ariel arrived at our place,i saw how much father and son enjoy tightening their bond.
And i got to know Ariel a lot better.
She.Is.Great. Tough,smart,sassy,possessive.

Reading their story again, knowing them as i do now, makes it hurt even more.
Knowing what they went through, what they endured....but at the same time i enjoyed the closeness they found with eachother. And i’m glad they have their own happy after.

(I knew then i had to tell Max about the plans some people have for him.
And,i’m sorry girls,he is just like his father....not into sharing.
His exact words were: “I am NOT going to be shared by others.”
Ariel was even clearer: “Nobody but me touches My Mad Max! Anyone that tries, has to go through me!”
So they’re staying with us,and Logan loves it! He was Goya’s from day one,and now he’s telling everyone about his “big brother” Max,and Max likes having a “little brother”,too)

Re-reading Max’ story was great! Ariel is perfect for him. But then again,Aja knows exactly who to match each of the men we meet in the series with....Seeing Goya again, reminding me when i fell for him,was a bonus that i can’t get enough of. Reminding me why i like Max,because he led me to Goya...But Max and Ariel’s story is captivating in itself, make no mistake! Who Ariel was,and who she became was a journey i loved watching. How she influenced Max’s view of himself, how she made him accept all that he is....the magnificence of his tiger. Nearly as magnificant as his father, nearly as regal. Knowing what i know now,i dó wonder,though....Where will they settle down? It can’t be with the Dark King,Alend Ramses....right? I know they have a duty to fulfill, but after that?
When the dust settles, and evil is destroyed? I know just the place.....and i hope they agree!

Just when you think you’ve figured out where Aja is going with this series, she sets Max free!
The one that was always só totally in control of himself.....finally shows us why.

Ariel, pain in his ass,Kyles saves him when he’s lured into a trap by the enemy.
But his familiar,Simca,is not so lucky....She saves Ariel at the cost of her life.
When Max recovers from his injuries,he is broken by the loss....until Ariel reveals some stunning news.
Ariel convinces him to track his roots,to free himself of his restrictions and live as he should....
Their journey brings them to his father and his “people”,who are very different to his kind,to every living being known so far....
What they are,you have to experience yourself, and trust me,they are unique, special, magical!

Max and Ariel grow very, very close as they learn to accept who and what they are.
I love Ariel’s new side as much as Max’s,they are truelly made for eachother!

But the enemy has plans for this group, evil plans.....and when they’re caught,it’s going to take everything they’ve got to escape before it’s too late.....

And all the while, there is just só much going on with others....só many layers are still unfolding,so many secrets still not uncovered....it’s a miracle how Aja keeps track of everyone!

Seeing this story come to life was such a great experience,i loved it!
And i look forward to many, many more!
Starting with Dalair’s story......

Well, well, well.. we meet again. This series, not the book because this is the first time I've read Dark Obsession. Now I liked it, maybe even borderline loved it, but I'm still a little upset with what went down.

I, for one, can't get over Simca. I loved that damn cat and for her to just die.. and sort of worm herself into Ariel with fairy glitter dust just made me emotional. Yes, I'm upset over that and I'm mad that Max wasn't that upset. Yeah, he freaked out for like one millisecond but he got over it pretty freaking quickly due Ariel having boobs and a vagina.

As for Ariel, she was definitely a zombie bad ass. It's weird to think she had no soul due to being created in a lab but I'm glad (in a way) that Simca merged her personality into Ariel. Lord knows she needed one. I'm just wondering what's going to happen if she gets captured by Medusa's people now that they know she ignored the program.

Then there's Max, who was very mysterious to me. I'm glad we got to know more about him with these mysterious pills Ariel gave him. Plus having a little family reunion was really cool and I'm not sure what I'm actually thinking with how this one ended. I'm in between stages of fit with worry about everyone in this series to wanting more wine just to digest everything. Seriously so much information to digest guys and I'm loving it all.

In the end, I loved the hot sexy smutty moments that I got in this one. These two definitely didn't disappoint with that. I also really enjoyed how Ariel was like.. I know everything about you all thanks to Simca.

First of all thanks so much to the talented author for giving me the ARC, l love so much this saga.
This was epic......
Where to begin??? This book was a marvelous read about Max, the Commander of the Dark King's chosen warriors, a woman created in a lab named Ariel and the mysterious panther Simca.
This book is full of surprises, the main characters are so much more than they appeared to be in the beginning, I particularly enjoyed the story about Maximus finding about his past and trying to discover who he really is.
On the other hand, Medusa and her minions are like always doing cruel things, destroying innocents in the process.
The introduction of new characters was great too, I really liked the animal spirits and I can't wait to read more about them, especially about the tiger king.
Now Dalair baby, please stop being a zombie please I can't take it anymore...
Other characters that really intrigued me are Ramses and the Creature, I have some theories about them, guess I'll have to wait in order to find out if I am right.
If you enjoy paranormal romance as much as I do, do yourself a favor and read this book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Take me with you, warrior. You will never be lonely again.

The diversity of the characters’ personality and origin never cease to amaze me. And all the plot reveals, and how everything is so intricately woven, clever connections carefully planned from the beginning… Just wow! Even when you’ve done your due diligence to do your guesswork to predict some of the plot development, so many things will still take you by surprise. I suddenly feel like a child again, reliving the first time I read all the Harry Potter books, being so impressed, mind-blown.

Maybe I’ve maxed out on my Claims, but the plot drives me forward. Seriously, watch out for any seemingly insignificant character you encounter in the books because they each have a story. It’s just a matter of time before they’re revealed.

Whoever the villain, there’s a bigger villain controlling the villain controlling the villain. And you know, I believe all of them just need some love. None of them are monsters born in darkness, they’re driven there by their desperation and low self-worth. I still just want to envelop them all in a tight bear hug and tell them they matter, they’re loved, I’m here for them, I haven’t given up on them.

Some small things stuck with me. Like the stolen Mate, ripped from his picturesque, domestic life. Inviting nothing yet raped and enslaved against his will. Sacrificing himself to protect his family. Blameless, but reviled by the one he loved most. I’ve always wanted to know more about the Blood Slave that the vampire queen lost her heart to, wondering if her love was truly unrequited.

“Please,” the mighty queen had begged. “Please tell me that you love me too. Just a little. Lie, if you must.” He’d turned his face away from her then, denying her this last request.

I know it’s uncharacteristic of me to not immediately launch into the romance. But I enjoyed it! Oh wow Maximus Justus Copernicus. I was so intrigued by Maximus and Simca and PITA FBI agent in the previous book. I immediately shipped Maximus with Simca, like get away boring humanoid PITA I’m not interested. I loved the regal air of the familiar. I loved the panther’s affection, understanding, and unnamed hunger. I couldn’t get enough knowing they’ve been by each other for millennia, sharing every meal, fight, and night together. Just the thought of them sleeping made me grin so hard!

Simca was a pillow hoarder, though, and didn’t like to share space. Half the time, Maximus found himself dangling off the side of the bed because the panther had thrown herself across it diagonally and hogged as large an area as she could. The other half of the time, she liked to lie directly on top of him, belly to belly, her tucked legs keeping most of her weight off him. And then she’d tuck her muzzle in the crook of his neck, and her eyes would squeeze shut with bliss.

If any female were to share his life, that female was going to be her.

The Maximus-Simca meet cute rivalled Tal-Ishtar and Dalair-Sophia.

“Simca,” he said. “That’s what I’ll call you. My gladness and joy.” She had a name for him too— Hers.

Maximus’s female was a badass full of spirit, I was highly entertained! A polyglot putting her linguistic skills to good use, cursing in all languages (“me cago en la leche que te han dado, hija de una hyena” [I shit in the milk they gave you, daughter of a hyena] was my fave). Chest-butting Maximus. I laughed so much at her antics. And I thought the other females were possessive before, LOL. She’s possessive enough to risk her life by pouncing her very human body on a cheetah.

She’d wear his body around her too, if that were a practical thing to accomplish, but towing around an almost three hundred pound towering male wasn’t conducive to the stealth missions that came with her job.

LOL! Seriously it was so cute. And Maximus was just equal parts exasperated and amused. I loved his responses to her OTT jealousy. Super fun heroine, playful and smart and sassy. And you do not want to cross her.

Oooh, Goya. Oh, Tal. Oh hi, Rhys.

A lot of laughs in this one. When Ava met Rhys, LOL. When Maximus had a yes, I have a girlfriend… you don’t know her… she goes to different school… in Canada moment. 🤣

Benji’s awe with Ryu was so adorable! And awwww, Devlin and Grace write poems to each otherrr.

I’m so satisfied with how this pairing worked out in the end.

“My gladness and joy. And pain in the ass.” 🤗

Where do i start.......

In terms of Plot characters and anxiety this has to be my fave tied with Dalair and Sophia

First of all, and Aja has done this twice now, we get a POV from the Nemesis or Baddie, as their story slowly unravels at the seams linking up to other characters and past histories, as the main plot and characters progress to its pinnacle, Its a beautiful and artistic way of writing and so refreshing.....

The Shifters, A mix of the tales we all know and love, destined mate, Lots of carnal need and of course turning into an animal.... with Kitsune Lore focusing alot of the lives and souls. Very very interesting.... (Not to mention detail on Dragons..... maybe they will make an appearance later on?)

Kitsune

Loved reading Max and Ariel's journey and discoveries, I think their story is far from over, loved the Tiger King and the histories and connections revealed leading me to more possible conclusions...

Brilliant and nail biting as unexpected hurdles are thrown at you left right and center....

Did i mention... lots of shifter Carnal need.....

More revelations.... And biggies... All taking their places on the chessboard for the final battle....

5 rip roaring stars

Awesome!

This book had me rolling with laughter at times! I loved Ariel! She was hilarious! At first I was so upset after what happened to Simca, and I was so upset for Max! But Ariel came in and stopped the heartbreak instantly! Loved it! On to the next!!

*************************************************************

Saw this one was a little to short so let’s go ahead and fix this one! This series is just beyond amazing I am beside myself with how much I love this series.

Maximus is a straightforward guy. Makes me laugh when I think about how he is always well put together! No joking around, serious guy, and a great leader. Only showing a soft spot for his familiar Simca! Simca is amazing as well! I love her attitude and her carefree spirit! Big love for her and the way she cares for Maximus.

Then there is Ariel Kyles.... omg she is hilarious! She is always making me laugh, and you just can’t help but fall in love with her! I can’t go into much without ruining the book so I’m just going to have to end it with she is hilarious and I love her personality!

This book brings in some major players. You find out some secrets and see different sides of a lot of major characters. You get to meet Goya and fall in love with a great man with a sad backstory! You will laugh! You will cry! You will feel like you are on a emotional roller coaster! But I promise it’s worth it! And by the end of the book you will be dying for more!

Thank you Aja James for the Pure Ones/Dark Ones series! Not enough words to say how amazing this series is!

Happy reading! 🖤🖤

Firstly why can i give only 5* , it's not nearly enough for this book , a book that will grip you in a way that you don't want to rush it just savor it as it unfolds , in my case my eyes wouldn't let me as i rushed from page to page trying to take it all in . Secondly you really do need to read all the previous books in this series , not normally a requirement ,even if you've you have already read them some might like to refresh because Aja James has been leaving tell tale signs for us to pick up on & while i got some i missed others , i knew Maximus was an Alpha , had to be , he was totally hot , had a panther & was commander of the chosen but like all in this amazing series he has secrets & when they start unfolding with the Pure traitors telling of her story pieces start slowly coming together , i was always a Maximus fan or maybe it was his panther i loved ,lines are a bit blurred now , i'm so glad we have new characters with a little bite & possibly untold stories & more secrets with them ,i love a secret , the last scene will have you wanting & needing the next book badly , , Aja James you are skilled at hiding the obvious in plain sight , i applaud you.

MIND. BLOWN!! That's what happens when you think you know what's going on and then you read this book. It was unexpectedly brilliant. It made me feel a range of emotions: elation, excitement, amusement, apprehension, saddness. It had everything.

There was a clear father/son theme in this book that i absolutely loved. I loved the main couple so much despite the fact that i wasn't interested in the characters previously. I loved seeing favorite characters from previous books. Though it hurts, i also love that characters issues don't get magically resolved just because they found their mates (oh Tal!). The universe expands so much in this book. I got immediately attached to the new characters and I want to know more!!!

Max and Ariel were sweet and super hot together, great storyline! Loved the “new” species in this world, my favorite of the paranormal genre! And holy hell the enemy squad is the worst, the chess game just gets more and more complex as we go along. The characters are so deep and well developed, I especially appreciate coverage on the daily lives of the previous couples. Poor Tal breaks my heart! And Dalair ahhh killing me.

Again 4 stars for me. Didn't like it as much as some of the other books I gave 5 stars so I wanted to be fair to those ratings. But oooooooh boy was this book a fun read.

Maximus and his backstory were nice, in my mind I picture him as Russell Crowe from when he played Maximus in Gladiator. I coukd have done with more of the backstory though, learned how he ended up as one of the Chosen but still a solid tale.

Speaking of tails...Simca. I let out a whimper when the panther seemed to die but to have her live on in her now new form as the formerly brainwashed/genetically engineered soldier was a mindtrip. I bought it at least.

As for the whole animal shifter and Tiger King etc....interesting but I feel like Aja James slipped back into old behavior and introduced too many new characters, only to kill most of them off without me really caring about it. Interesting too read still though.

Dalair 😭😨😱 What is the Creature doing to you 😭😭😭. Seeing Dalair so badass was cool even if he fought for the enemy. I feel an inkling of sympathy for the Creature which is annoying. No sympathy or any other feelings for Wan'er though. I despise traitors and while her backstory is sad I don't see any redeeming features. She may be even worse than Medusa!

Next story is Dalair's right? I need to brace myself before I start that.

4 stars. This was really really good but out of all the books I've read in this series, this is my least favorite. It took me a hot minute to reconcile Ariel with Simca. And by the time I was able to see them as one rather than two, I never got the chance to connect to Ariel as a character. However, she had some great moments with her cursing.

Maximus was mysterious and I liked him but after reading Seth and all the others I think he may be my least favorite hero. I guess I never really paid attention to him so that's on me.

Medusa is the worst. I love that we continue to see the world building and other characters pop up that I love. We get insight to new paranormals which was cool.

I've noticed dragons are mentioned a few times and I'm hoping that's gonna become a reality because if you know me, I love dragons haha.

I'm real interested in Goya and Ramses now. And Tal....you're hurting my heart.

Overall, a solid read. I just had a difficult time connecting to the characters this go around.

WOW !!! This story is absolutely supercharged !

Maximum and Ariel's story is completely different from the others so far, but full of animalism, supercharged sex, beasts, and A lot of action ! This storyline gets more and more intense, suspenseful, mysterious, yet revealing at times, albeit not enough for me ! Lol I can't wait to see what happens next !!

Aja has done is again! Another amazing book added to this awesome series.

I have been waiting to read more about Maximus and Simca for a while now. In each book we see a little of them, but not enough to get a story. I love their connection.

So Ariel.... I wasn't very sure about her in the beginning.... this weird soulless programmed thing, but then everything changed with Simca's soul inside her. I'm not really sure I still fully understand how they exist together (Ariel & Simca) as one, but hey it totally worked. I started to enjoy them as one towards the middle... kind of took me a while, but now I can't not see them together.

description

Maximus... seriously!!! I just loveeeee him and GOYAAAAA I mean come on! I cannot wait to read about him and all the other great beasts. Reading about Maximus and his child hood just made me sad.. Can we repeat circa's death pleaseeee because that bitch deserves a thousand deaths for what she did to Maximus and Goya.

And the researcher (Don't want to say her name and give up who she is) also needs to die several times over and over that traitor bitch. Made me sick!

Such a great read and would recommend this series to everyone!

Dark Obsession is the 8th book of Aja James’ Pure/Dark series, after seven books it’s sad to say that this book is barely average. I love how all the books are connected and the reoccurring characters but I didn’t enjoy Maximus and Ariel’s love story. Though there was a build up I felt it was too insta love and they barely know each other, I know it’s fiction but I just could not get over that.

I love Benji and the Creature’s POV, it was fun. The newest revelation about the mole is mind blowing.

I love the writing and world building, that did not reduce in quality, instead it increased.

Being a nurse, I have seen, smelled, touched, and wondered are there pure/dark ones out there yet to be discovered? Only time will tell 😘

While I really enjoyed this book, it wasn't my favourite. I even debated giving it 3 stars but the last 30% or so is super exciting and thrilling and nail-bitingly fast-paced and it earned the extra star.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

My main issue was with the Ariel/Simca thing. Logically, it made sense. But I just felt so weird about Ariel because she was basically a soulless automaton, and I just couldn't get over missing Simca's bond with Maximus. I couldn't reconcile in my head that she and Ariel were the same. But not? But kinda? I'm still confused.

Because of that, it really bothered me that Maximus wasn't more heartbroken after Simca died. I get that he was supposed to have intuitively realized that she was inside Ariel, but it just felt weird to me. They just had such a pure friendship that lasted centuries, yet I felt like I was more sad than he was!

Still, 4 stars because there was hella hot sexy times, I'm so excited to read more about Goya, there were some Eli & Clara moments to make me happy, and some Tal moments to me cry! (not Ishtar because I'm still mad at her for not seizing a certain opportunity to kill a certain someone when she had the chance! $@#&!!!!!!!)
