One More Hug

Rate this book
From Inside Edition’s national correspondent Megan Alexander comes a heartwarming picture book in the tradition of The Wonderful Things You Will Be that shows us there’s always time for one more hug as a young boy starts his day and his journey through life.

A tree branch tapping on a window, a pretend sword breaking in two, the skreeeetch of a school bus door: one more hug by mom is always needed to comfort and reassure a young boy that he has the inner confidence to carry on. As time passes, and he outgrows his childhood fears, he returns the favor by giving his mother one more hug as he goes on his way.

This timeless tale of unconditional love and comfort for an anxious young boy as he leaves the nest and starts his journey through life is a perfect story for mothers to share with their sons to show them that it’s okay to have fears and needs—even as they get older—and it’s okay to share those feelings with the people who love them.

Charming, sweet, and lovely, ONE MORE HUG is a beautiful book to be shared between mother and son and parents and child. Told in vignettes over time, a toddler asks for one more hug when scared and one more kiss when sad which turns into a child asking for the same but with different causes and finally the little boy is all grown up and leaving. As the mother thinks about how much she loves him, he returns to give her the comfort of one more hug.

What I loved: The illustrations in the book are absolutely gorgeous, fully capturing the plot and then some. The story line is easily relatable by parents who know the bittersweet feelings of children growing up- but help to connect them in love by the experience of hugs, kisses, and squeezes that are shared along the way.

The book is perfect for sharing with toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary schoolers- and then when fully grown for children to share with their parents in turn. This book would be the perfect gift for a son to give their mother when they graduate or move out- accompanied, of course, by at least one more hug.

Final verdict: Lovely, precious, and so sweet, parents should be prepared to tear up as they share this gorgeous book with their little ones and experience the joys and bittersweet experiences of having a child grow up with all the hugs, kisses, and squeezes to enjoy along the way. Highly recommend for anyone who is looking for a book about life and parent-child love (especially mother-son) in the vein of THE WONDERFUL THINGS YOU WILL BE, YOU MADE ME A DAD, and/or YOU MADE ME A MOTHER.

I'm
not
going
to
cry...
oops.

I got about 2 pages in before turning to my coworker who just read it and said "is something bad gonna happen like Love You Forever". I'm glad this book was happier but it still made me a little emotional.

Despite being a kids book, I actually feel like this would be a cute graduation/starting college present for a son from his mom...

A mother's love is always there, and that message comes across in a beautiful way in these pages.

A young boy gets a hug, a kiss, or even a squeeze from his mother, but when something scary or painful comes along, sometimes one caring moment is not enough. The boy grows, but the love doesn't change. And at one point, even an extra hug for the mother can be a wonderful thing.

Hugs warm, comfort, offer love and give security, and this book lets that theme shine especially when it comes to a mother and her child. The text is simple and the scenes, especially in the beginning, are one young listeners will easily identify with. That the mother is always there, ready to offer her comfort one more time, leaves a warm, fuzzy atmosphere. As the boy grows, this love never leaves even when the boy is old enough to head out on his own. And while young listeners may or may not connect as well with this later part, they'll still feel the love and recognize the message that the feeling never changes.

The illustrations are light, sweet and allow the story and scenes to unfold where the text ends. Every moment gains familiarity and hits home as young listeners can watch what happens to the boy and how he grows. The allow the beauty of the book to blossom in so many ways.

The message is clear in these pages, but it never feels preachy. Rather, it's like a warm homecoming. I see this one being maybe even more meaningful for the mom's or caretakers that read it than the listeners, but it will ring true and encourage the young listeners too. There supposedly is the message that boys are allowed to show their feelings as they grow, but this doesn't come across clearly. Rather it molds into the message that even older 'kids' should still allow themselves to be loved and give love to their parents. And this is a great message alone.

I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed diving into the loving tale enough to want to leave my honest thoughts.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy of Megan Alexander's wonderful new illustrated children's book "One More Hug." Some of you may know Megan as a TV host, singer, actress and inspirational speaker. But with this touching new book, she adds children's author to her growing resume.

"One More Hug" is the story of a mother and her child, narrated by the mother, as she chronicles her child's journey to adulthood, at every stage of life asking the child for just one more hug. With beautiful watercolor-like illustrations by Hiroe Nakata, this book will take its place amongst similarly themed books such as "Love You Forever" and "The Runaway Bunny." Good company for sure, and deservedly so. Guaranteed to enthrall young children, and leave their parents a little misty-eyed at every reading. A modern classic.

Highly recommended.

This book is really cute, and I loved the illustrations! My only problem was that I couldn't figure out who it was supposed to be for. It honestly seemed aimed at college students because it ends with the boy going off to college. That meant I really liked it, but most students wouldn't really relate. This was a fun book, but I might not have a good way to put it into my classroom.

Giving one more hug and then, later, another one.

It's called nurturing, at least to grownups. Results include mutual joys like these, joys both for parent and child:

And before long, you put away your
make-believe sword,
and you rode your bike without any help.

Author Megan Alexander's book is a tribute to tenderness.
While illustrator Hiroe Nakata brings tremendous sensitivity to her beautiful drawings.

FIVE STARS for sure!

Wow! This book almost made me cry! I don't even have kids!
A thoughtful book about a mother always helping her son and giving him another hug because he's sad, scared, tired, etc.
I think this book would make an excellent graduation gift as well for sons who are about to leave the nest or even those who are becoming fathers.
Wonderful, heartwarming, & charming story/illustration!

I feel like the audience for this book is more grown-ups than kids, though it is sweet. A mom explains how as her little kiddo grows up, he keeps asking for "one more hug" every time he needs to be brave (going to kindergarten for the first time, going onstage for the school play, etc), up until when he's grown up to an adult and living on his own. Sort of "Love You Forever" vibes.

Mom's hug can fix everything.

One More Hug is very sweet, telling us with story that moms arms are our safest place with love and security. While it didn't quite move me to emotional tears, it greatly reminds me of Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, which never fails to make me cry no matter how many times I've read it in the last 30+ years.

5 stars, congrats Meagan Alexander

One more hug is a very sweet and cute book about a little girl who just wants one more hug from her mom wherever she goes! This is a cute book to read to your kids one day as they leave for school on the bus and is a reminder that everything is going to be ok! This is also an Christopher award winning book.

Sentimental tale of relationship with mother and son and his need for her being different and the same as he grow up.
Compared with the far more creepy Love You Forever by Robert Munsch where the mother came across as a psycho stalker this one is more consensual, loving and reflective.
Not sure the kids will understand the nuances, but there is something here for all ages.

As the little boy grows, he continues to ask for one more hug in times of anxiousness, tiredness, loneliness etc. But too soon he outgrows the extra hugs... at least that what his mom thinks until her grown son surprises her with an extra hug on the day he leaves home.

Fighting the lie that manhood means hiding away your emotions...one BEAUTIFUL picture book at a time.

Also, you should look up "Big Boys Cry" by Jonty Howley...also battling this falsity that men shouldn't be emotional or have needs.

As the mother of 3 boys, this book had me feeling all the feels. But as a read-aloud book to my kids, it didn't do much. This is one of those picture books that would make a great gift to any mother in your life but does not engage young readers.

This book is so sweet it made me tear up. I think it is a great book to read your kids as a mom, it creates a good conversation for a parent to show their kids how much they love them. (Christopher award)

Cute. Definitely in the made to make moms teary category. Don't know how interested kids will be or if it does anything wildly different than what's been done before. I skipped the about this book section which I never do but I just felt like...I know why this exists, you don't have to tell me.

I think this book is a very heartwarming picture book. Students are able to get the message of there's always time for one more hug. This book would be good for younger students.

I really liked this book and made me think of the love that I have for each of my children. I love the fact that even though they are no longer living at home, every time they visit I get lots of hugs.

Grade range:
Genre: I never thought that a children's' picture book would make me emotional, but this book did just that. One More Hug is a feel good book that's all about unconditional love that a child can have no matter how old they are. I also loved all the color used in the illustrations.

This book should really come with a “DO NOT READ TO YOUR TODDLER IF YOU ARE PREGNANT” warning. No one wants to be a blubbering mess trying to explain why they don’t want their 3 year old to grow up. Cute concept, maybe, but not something I would want read to my little kid.

This was unexpectedly the sweetest thing I’ve ever read. Didn’t expect to tear up so quickly! Luckily my son is just a little newborn so I have plenty of time for all the hugs. But this book is super sweet and a great way to tell your children that you love them and always will.

This book is so sweet! It made me tear up. It reminds me of “I’ll Love You Forever”. The illustrations were cute and colorful. If you have teens or adult children, it will make you reminisce about when they were little and just wanted one more hug. Again, such a sweet book!
