The story begins as much YA fiction does, with a girl in a small town dealing with familiar struggles and holding onto optimism. It quickly break from form, however, and rarely lets off the gas until the book is over.

Characters and personalities will seem familiar to anyone well versed with the genre, and at times the story fails to set itself apart from many others like it. However, Connor's writing excels in giving realistic depth to her characters through explorations of their emotions and in
