When Squirrel learns that the Golden Acorn Hunt is going to be a team event this year she’s not happy. Squirrel has won the competition for the past eight years and wants to add another trophy to her collection. Beaver, Rabbit, Tortoise and Bird eagerly join her team but Squirrel doesn’t think her friends will be fast enough to win. The day of the race arrives and Squirrel finds herself in a position where she needs to decide what is more important to her: winning or her friends.

I adored Katy Hudson’s A Loud Winter’s Nap so I was keen to get my hands on this book, especially after I fell in love with its gorgeous cover.

This picture book was written with 3 to 6 year olds in mind. There are plenty of themes to discuss with children, including the importance of teamwork and the value of friendships. If I was reading this to a child I’d also be talking to them about Squirrel’s competitive nature and that, while winning can be fun, it’s not everything.

I loved the illustrations, particularly the ones showing all of the different teams scurrying around the tress in search of the elusive golden acorn. While I smiled my way through all of the images my favourite was this one, showing the friends enjoying a picnic together.

Thank you to Capstone and Netgalley for making this book available to read so I could provide an honest review.

As soon as I saw Katy Hudson had released a new book I jumped at the chance to read it. My daughter and I love "The Long Winter's Nap" and I couldn't wait to show her this new adventure!

Squirrel is consistently the champion of the Golden Acorn contest and has the trophies to prove it. This year there is a twist! Squirrel must be part of a team in order to win. What ensues is a delightful story about the dismay Squirrel feels at being slowed down by her team, the many mishaps the team encounter during the race and the eventual realization of how much more important friendship and teamwork is over winning by yourself.

Ms. Hudson's illustrations shine bright and add that extra component to make this book an easy recommendation for any kid! My parents could have probably read this to me as a child because I was obsessed with winning and they could have used the lessons to teach me that winning isn't always everything!

I found this to be a lovely, fun read showing the importance of friendship and teamwork for us all. It’s aimed at children of approximately ages 3-6. The illustrations are so charming and has gorgeous animals with lots of energy.

Its a lovely, cute story, to show that winning isn't everything in this wonderful picture book about friendship and teamwork.

I would like to thank the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review

Being a teacher, and a wife of a slo-pitch player, I saw more than my share of competitive people. It always bothered me and this is a great book to combat that in young people. Squirrel is super competitive. He has won the Golden Acorn race for years running and proudly displays all his trophies. When they change the rules and make it a team event. he is not happy. His team is made up of his friends, a rabbit, a turtle, a beaver, and a bluebird. When the race begins, he races ahead and leaves them in the dust thinking he doesn't need them to win, but he does and back he goes. As the story goes on, he realizes that everything is more fun with friends, and that he needs to put his friends first. This is a great message for children. especially those with a competitive streak, but also for parents who push their children to win at all costs. I really liked the illustrations, especially the ones during the race showing his friends struggling to keep up. They were quite cute and humorous. A wonderful book for a public, classroom, school or family library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

I read this book to the kids during the Thanksgiving break and we just loved it. The story follows Squirrel, as he is the reigning champion of the Golden Acorn race for years but this year the rules have changed and now you must be part of a team to participate. Squirrel is not happy about it but he recruits his friends to be part of his team. During the race, Squirrel has to keep going back to help his friends as they have problems so he decides to try to just do it himself. No spoilers! I definitely recommend this book to kids of all ages especially during the Autumn season. Beautiful Illustrations! Bright and Colorful!

This book has amazing illustrations are in rich golden tons that make it look very good. Unfortunately, the story, even if I respect the message, is aboard in a very cheesy way and just a big lack of originality. I still gave it a good rating for the message and illustration... but the story could have been better and make it a perfect book!

I read the Golden Acorn with our six year old and it was a great conversation starter about teamwork and friendship. Squirrel is the reigning champion of the Golden Acorn contest. Squirrel is highly competitive and is disappointed when she finds out that she needs to work as a team for this year's annual contest.

During the event Squirrel at first feels slowed down by her teammates but realizes over the course of the contest that friendship means so much more than a trophy ever could. This is a great and relatable book for 4-6-year-olds that is engaging and also has a meaningful and important message. The illustrations are captivating and beautifully done and they add so much to the storyline.

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I have noticed a trend in books for children, about friendship, that also deals with competitiveness. One recently was about a horse that had to compete with others as a team. And in this book, the Squirel has to compete with others in a team.

I suppose this is to teach the importance of team playing. But, I don't thini it is necessary to bop us over the head with it.

The pictures are bright and colorful, at least, and the story idea is good, but the execution left me a little flat. Yes, it is good to have friendships, but why does it all have to be built around team players?

The Golden Acorn is a sweet book with adorable illustrations of forest animals. Squirrel is a competitive little racer who keeps a trophy collection from all the many races she has won. But the Golden Acorn race has a new twist this year - only TEAMS will be allowed! Squirrel is put out, but rounds up her friends anyway. But on race day, will she be able to remember that the whole team has to work together?

This is a cute picture book for young children, and the pastel colored illustrations really complement the woodland setting. A beautiful addition to any child's library.

The stunning illustrations are the highlights of this book.
However, the story, despite its valuable message, did not impress me much. Especially the second part felt a bit rushed and not emotionally-engaging enough for a child.

Tupai merasa kesulitan membawa "the golden acorn" tersebut sehingga ia memutuskan meninggalkannya.

Squirrel is the fastest animal in the wood. She even has shelves upon shelves of trophies to prove it. Above all she’s proud of the trophies that she was awarded for winning the annual Golden Acorn Hunt eight years in a row. But this year, the rules have changed: The Golden Acorn Hunt is now a team event!

With no time to find anyone even remotely as fast as her, Squirrel has to team up with her friends – Rabbit, Beaver, Bird and Tortoise. Again and again Squirrel’s friends hold her back as they struggle to keep up with her. Finally, she races ahead, leaving them behind. That’s when she finds… The Golden Acorn! But what use is it to her without her friends?

The character development in The Golden Acorn is superb, as we see Squirrel transform over the course of the story from someone who just wants to win into a kind, caring friend who values those closest to her above all else. The book also imparts (without coming across as preachy) an important message about learning to work together as a team.

The illustrations are absolutely delightful. I’m always impressed at how author/illustrators can often match their artwork so perfectly to their story, and Katy Hudson (author of the popular Too Many Carrots and A Loud Winter’s Nap) certainly doesn’t disappoint. The colours and textures are gorgeous, as are the characters’ expressions and the cosy autumnal feel of the book with the yellow-orange leaves and the animals feasting on pumpkin pie and toffee apples at the end.

The cover is attractive, but it doesn’t end there. Each page is so much fun with just enough detail to make it interesting and humorous. And the animals . . . what can I say? The animals’ expressions convey so much that I couldn’t keep from smiling.

But enough, on to the story.

Squirrel has managed to win the Great Acorn Hunt for the last 8 years. But something totally awful has happened. The rules have changed. The race is now a team competition. Ugh. What’s a squirrel to do?

Well, Squirrel does at least have some great friends that will no doubt step up to help. Beaver, Tortoise, Rabbit, and Bird agree, but racing and searching are quite what they enjoy. Though Squirrel desperately tries to work with this little team, the race is the following day!

As the race begins, Squirrel leaps to the lead. Yes! There it is. The beautiful Golden Acorn. But what about team participation? Ugh! How far back can her struggling teammates be?

Thank you Capstone, Katy Hudson, and NetGalley for an ARC.

What Concerned Me:
Absolutely nothing.

What I Liked Most:
Though The Golden Acorn does contain a message, which is nice, the illustrations and story are something you won’t want to miss sharing with your classroom or kids. The message is just the icing on the cake!

The plot of The Golden Acorn is that Squirrel loved being the fastest animal in the forest and she would always win the golden acorn award for being the fastest, but one year the rules changed. She would have to compete as a team, but she did not think her friends would be very fast. Squirrel tried to take off fast to win the race, but her friends kept getting stuck so she had to go back and help them. She then kept racing ahead and couldn’t hear her friends calling for her until she found the golden acorn, but then it was so heavy and she realized she was all alone. She went back to find her friends and finished the race with them, and when she didn’t win the trophy she decided it didn’t matter and her friends should come first anyways. The main character was Squirrel, who was pretty selfish at the beginning because she wanted to be the fastest and just cared about winning the golden acorn, but by the end of the story she became more caring and cared about her friends more than the trophy. The illustrations showed the plot of the story and were detailed in showing each event. I liked that the main character grew throughout the story and became more caring. I could use this book in this classroom by showing my students that friends and family are more important than material items.

What a beautiful book – both in story and illustrations.

Squirrel likes to run races and WIN. This year the race for the golden acorn has new rules. Everyone must run as a team. Squirrel is not happy because he knows his friends will slow him down and they do. Squirrel is irritated with Turtle, Beaver and Rabbit. When Squirrel finds the golden acorn, will he continue running ahead having left his friends in the dust or will friendship win out over material things?

This is a great lesson on friendship and how important it is. Squirrel covets the golden acorn and is disgusted that he has to have a team to race. He focuses on his friends flaws instead of their positive attributes. In the end, he realizes that friendship is the most important thing.

I highly recommend this book. It is easy to read and entertaining for both children and adults. The illustrations are comical and bright. There are plenty of things for kids to point out on each page. The story provides a good lesson for everyone and does it in a manner than kids can understand. I loved it!

Squirrel is a champion, and she has the trophies to prove it. She’s the fastest one in the land, and she’s got a spot cleared for the next Golden Acorn Hunt trophy. But then they announce that this year’s Golden Acorn Hunt is a team event. Squirrel doesn’t have time to find a team, so she recruits her friends, gives them a quick training, and then it is the day of the hunt. Will Squirrel’s friends just weigh her down, can she just do things without them, or does she have something important to learn?

A fun book on teamwork with some rather humorous illustrations of animals that aren’t usually in trees climbing vines and trying not to fall. I really like that Squirrel learns her lesson and gets her priorities straight before she hurts anyone. I also like that Hudson took the brave route with the ending and where the trophy ended up. Highly recommended for kids who may get a little too into competitions and put winning above relationships and the people involved. Also just a fun read for animal lovers and humorous stories.

This is such a cute children’s book about friendship and what it means.

Squirrel is excited about this years acorn hunt race. Squirrel has won it for the last eight years in a row. However, when squirrel sees that this years event will be a team effort and is not able to do it alone Squirrel takes her friends offer to join in for a team effort this year.

Squirrel is fast and just wants to go go go. Once she reaches the Golden Acorn, she realizes that she can’t do it alone and really does need her friends to win this race.

She realizes the value of a team that sticks together and gets to their destination together. Knowing how great it is to accomplish some thing on ones own is great but as Squirrel learns here, sometimes we need others to get achieve our goals.

The illustrations in this book are beautiful. I love the foliage.

This is an excellent story to teach children about teamwork and friendship. I would encourage teacher, parents, caregivers, grandparents to all pick this one up for the children in their lives to help build that much needed skill of teamwork.

Squirrel is the fastest creature in the forest and has trophies and certificates lining her walls to prove it. She has won the a golden acorn hunt for many years and plans to do the same again this year, when a rule change is announced saying you must compete with a team, squirrel is concerned, is there time for enough training to make her friends as fast as she is, when the day of the hunt arrives, will squirrel stick with her team, or will the temptation to win be too great?
This was a lovely story of friendship and the importance of teamwork, one I’m sure many of my class would do well to read/hear. The story is simple but the message is clear...a group of friends is a better prize than any trophy or medal.
With simple vocabulary and colourful pictures with plenty to look at, this story is accessible to even the youngest of children. It would be great to read with a competitive child and with a group who need to learn why working cooperatively is important

The Golden Acorn caught my attention at the book store, and I knew I had to incorporate it in a lesson for my third graders. This is about a squirrel who wins the golden acorn competition every year, because she is the fastest in the forest. However, this year was different, and squirrel had to participate in the race as part of a team. Her team members consisted of a beaver and a tortoise...who are not the fastest of all the participants. When squirrel leaves her team behind, she realizes she cannot carry the big golden acorn without her teammates, so she decides to turn around and help them out through the obstacles. This was a great book to help students learn about character traits and feelings throughout the story. They were able to compare and contrast squirrel and her teammates. They also picked up on the message that winning isn't everything, and that friends always come first. This could also be a good book to read aloud at the beginning of the year for students because it describes teamwork and the importance of caring for your friends.

Every year, Squirrel excitedly trains for The Golden Acorn Hunt. And every year, for the past eight years, she wins. This year, however, she discovers the race has to be run as a team. But no one can race like she can! With the race the next day, Squirrel grudgingly agrees to her friends Beaver, Turtle, Rabbit, and Bird as her teammates.
However, no amount of training would have this motley crew ready to race through the treetops. Though her friends wholeheartedly try to help, Squirrel suffers, dramatically, through their endless number of mishaps. Until . . .
This is a great book as a companion to TOO MANY CARROTS (sharing) and LOUD WINTER'S NAP (new experiences), and also as an individual book to spark discussions on the value of friendship, the meaning of team, and the problems of over-competitiveness. The expressiveness of the characters and the conundrums they get themselves stuck in makes this a fun book to re-read over and over.

Squirrel is a highly motivated athlete who loves the Golden Acorn race! But then there is a change in the rules, you must compete with a team?! Fortunately she has several friends who are willing to help her out, but they are not as... athletic as she is. She tries to help them train, but all too soon it is race day and Squirrel is off! But soon back to try to get her friends moving faster, then she's off again, and back again... Finally she out paces her friends without realizing it and finds the Acorn! But there's a reason you need a team this year, and Squirrel soon realizes she misses her friends and would rather be with them than winning.

For those of us that are super competitive, this is a real struggle! Glad Squirrel was able to come to terms with her competitive nature with little pain, but not sure I could've let go that easily.

A story about working as a team and placing friendship above winning. The illustrations are realistic and support the text. The story is easy to follow. Would make a terrific read aloud.
Squirrel is the fastest animal and has won many trophies for speed. The prized one is The Golden Acorn. She's won it for the last eight years. The rules changed this year and animals have to work as a team to win. She's frustrated as she knows her friends will hold her back. The race begins and she takes off. She has to double back several times to help her friends. She races ahead and finds the prize but can't move it on her own. Squirrel realizes that friends are more important than any prize and she leaves it and returns to help them.
Use to talk about about cooperation and valuing others.

'The Golden Acorn' with words and pictures by Katy Hudson is about the importance of winning, and things that are even more important.

Squirrel is a winner. He has won the last 8 Golden Acorn competitions and already has a space cleared for this year's trophy. Squirrel finds out the rules have changed and it's now a team event. The event starts and Squirrel runs ahead, but his team lags behind. Will Squirrel win the trophy or will Squirrel win some wisdom about what's really important?

The story is a good solid one too. The illustrations in this book are really great and give the dynamic feel of an animated adventure. I love the little details in the drawings too.

Squirrel is uber-competitive, and has won the Golden Acorn race for years running, when they change the rules and make it a team event. Gathering his ragtag group of friends (rabbit, turtle, beaver, and bluebird), he races ahead and leaves them in the dust thinking he doesn't need them to win. Of course, he sees the error of his ways partway through the race and goes back - everything is more fun with friends that alone, and friends always come first! A great message for children (especially those with a competitive streak!). Plus, the illustrations are lovely - while squirrel was a bit of a jerk in the beginning, the illustrated struggles of his friends made them so charming and had me hooked.
