Melinda Metz grew up in San Jose, California. People sometimes ask if she knows the way there. She kinda does, but she has an off-kilter sense of direction, so to be confident of arriving, it's better to consult some kind of navigational device.

Her mother tried to teach her to read in kindergarten, but Melinda had no interest. She also had no interest in learning to write her name. (FYI, when Melinda was in kindergarten it was all about finger-painting, play time, and naps.) Eventually, she mastered both and even majored in English at San Jose State University.

After college, Melinda moved to Manhattan to seek her fortune, which involved learning to identify fruits and vegetables while working at a grocery store,
making $2.73 working backstage for an off-off Broadway play (her part of the box-office profits), and editing books.

Melinda and the lovely and talented Laura J. Burns pretty much became unofficial writing partners when they were editors at the same company. They teamed up to brainstorm story ideas, and at some point their brains fused in some key places. Later they worked on the Roswell High book series, Laura developing and editing the series, Melinda writing.

That series led to Melinda and Laura, now an official writing team, writing two TV pilots, moving to L.A. to work on the Roswell TV show, and briefly living in Toronto while on the writing staff of 1-800-Missing. They both continue to write books, together and separately.

Laura and Melinda's new book, Sanctuary Bay, a YA thriller, is coming out in January 2016. It's set at an ultra-exclusive private school on an island. Once a student is accepted to the school, they must stay until graduation. No visits home, no contact with the outside world at all. Find out why in January!

The first four books in Melinda's new middle-grade mystery series,S.M.A.R.T.S., are out now. The books involve a group of kids in a makerspace club and they all have lots of science info. For all the cool geeks out there!

Melinda lives in Concord, NC with her dog, Scully (yes, she loves the woo-woo so much she named her dog after a kickass X-Files character). She has never regretted learning to read and write her name.

The Intruder is the fifth book in the Roswell High series of ten books, upon which the television series was based (a quarter of a century ago!) The television iteration didn't stick as closely to the plotline after the first book, so it can be seen as an interesting alternate history story. The books were targeted for adolescent girls, and the main focus is on the angst of teen romance, but the science-fiction twist adds a bit of a fun twist. This one picks up the cliffhanger from the previous book, where Michael was captured by Valenti. It focuses on Michael/Maria-Isabel/Alex drama, as well as the never-ending Liz (who's Ortecho in the books, not Parker)-Max drama, and a new character named Adam is introduced to shake things up. It's a fun, very quick read, and ends with something of another cliffhanger. Gee, could walking through fire be seen as a metaphor? (What's a metaphor? Why, to keep your cows in.) When the television series became popular Pocket reprinted the books with photographs of the cast on the covers, so the characters don't look much like they're described.

"Please, Max," a voice begged. "You can't die on me now... not after you finally agreed to be more than 'just friends.'"

What a first sentence lol. I definitely like the show a lot better, but these books are pretty entertaining!

There is a ton of stuff happening in this installment.

And then we had this:

"Maria's friendship was important to her. More important than she could have imagined a few months ago. But Michael. Isabel had to at least find out what could happen if they kissed each other. She thought it might change her life forever. And if that change meant she couldn't be friends with Maria anymore, well..."

Michael has been captured by Sheriff Valenti and is being held as a prisoner in a secret compound. The rest of the gang are trying to come up with some kind of plan to rescue Michael. Just when they think they might have some answers, another alien brings all their plans to a crashing halt. Isabel keeps wondering if her relationship with Alex is really what she wants, or if her connection to Michael means something more.

I loved the Roswell TV show when I was a teenager, and it was so fun to rediscover this story through the books! I don't think I would have enjoyed the books now as an adult if I didn't already have the nostalgia of the TV show.

I like that the books are different than the TV show and have different plot lines. It keeps it interesting for me, and it's fun to see how the books differ from the show. The character's personalities are a little different too. Michael is way more funny and less brooding. Isabel is more haughty and proud. Alex is more confident. Max is way less calm than in the TV show. It's weird to see these different sides to their personalities.

The writing is really dorky and has all the high school tropes that you would expect from a 90s teen novel. But I don't care! I love it anyway! Most people would probably roll their eyes at the teen angst, but it just makes me laugh because I already adore the characters.

I can't wait to read more from this series!

The Intruder was another great addition to the Roswell High series as the group deals with the fallout from the events in The Watcher.

Michael Guerin has been held captive by Project Clean Slate since he and his friends broke into the organization's secret compound to find their ship. He's not as concerned about himself as he is for his friends so he has to find a way to escape before Sheriff Valenti forces him to give them up. Because once Valenti knows the identities of the other aliens, he'll come for them and he won't need Michael anymore.

The Roswell High books continue to be quite enjoyable and at this point in the series, they're nothing like the TV adaptations. The Intruder picks up right where The Watcher left off with the group trying to save Max. Once he's okay, Isabel lets the rest of the group know what happened when her, Michael, and Ray invaded Project Clean Slate. With Ray gone and Michael captured, the group has to come up with a plan that will allow them to rescue Michael without getting them all killed. I was interested to see how they'd manage to infiltrate the compound a second time as now Valenti knows they're coming. While that's going on, we also are following Michael as he's put through tests in the compound where he has to balance cooperating enough to survive without revealing the identities of the other aliens. I really enjoyed when these two storylines intersected and the ending had just the right amount of action and suspense to keep you guessing.

With Michael separated from the group, we meet several new characters during his scenes. Cameron was intriguing and I definitely want to learn more about her character. I didn't love Adam's character as I found him to be untrustworthy but I'm interested to see what happens with him after his actions at the end of the book. There's once again quite a bit of romance drama throughout the book with Max and Liz being the only stable relationship. I'm curious to see how some of these pairings will work out as a lot is up in the air at the moment.

Overall The Intruder was an excellent read and I'm looking forward to picking up the next book in the series, The Stowaway, soon.

There were times while reading this book that I thought maybe this series had finally began to lose its appeal. But, by the last page, it was back, baby! The characters are moving forward emotionally. The plot is continuing to twist meaningfully.

I know nostalgia is strong. But, if a book is mediocre, you can tell. Or if the material feels 'dated', you can tell. Roswell High is again great for its category.

Book 8:

I'm gonna be SOOOOO pissed if Michael and Izzy hook up.

Okay. So they didn't really.
I never realized how different the show and the books are, I'm kinda iffy about Shiri Appleby.

I wanted to give this one 5 stars but everything just feels rushed in this series and some things are just way too convenient. Just know, i otherwise wanted to give 5 stars. I love this series.

I didn't really know how to rate this one. The premise sounded interesting and a twist with Michael getting captured. Although it had some good moments in the book, it felt weak with three new love interests in Michael's life and the lack of ruthlessness from Valentis character. It's hard sometimes to remember that I'm reading a book that is for young teenagers. I'm really showing my age here lol but I guess after a build up of 5 books of the impending threat of the aliens being captured, you would think there would be more involvement. Yet Michael was just tricked and manipulated by a spy....
It was a let down..but I did like the twist with alien newcomer Adam. It was predictable but an interesting plot. I was pretty surprised on the ending with valenti. It does make one think of how would you behave, think and feel if you were raised alone in a cage believing that the only father figure you knew was actually your prison guard. It's dark, twisted and sad.
So far in the books, I want to see less love triangles and more enjoying the main couples. But sadly, I don't really feel the excitement I feel when I see it on the OG series. I am happy Isobel cut ties with Alex, they weren't meant to be. Alex deserves better. But I'll keep progressing with the series but wish I could feel that excitement but right now, it just feels drawn out and childish.

It’s February sooooo guess it’s alien tiiiiiime 👽

Basically every February since like 2019 I back in my Roswell / Star Crossed ( and now) Lux era

I crave for alien novels 🤭

I am now on a train with no phone battery so let’s continue the Roswell High series that I started last summer after my 2024 February alien phase ( yes sometimes those craving last for month 🤓)

I hope to read at least 3 of those during my train ride back home but we will see

Riiiiight Liz is called Ortecho (not Parker) in the book

Ray, Max’s boss at the UFO museum is dead

Michael is captured by Valenti ( awww but in the series he is actually niiiice) and they do exam on him and use Adam another alien who is kind of their experiment toy

Valentin making him call dad is sickening poor Adam

Everyone is in love with everyone in this wtf ?
Isabelle wants to kiss Michael who is into Isabelle and Maria and Maria is into Michael who is the bf of Max who is into Liz but thinks Maria is cute

And Michael in his cell is visited by Cameron an alien also but who is on the side of Valenti ( tho they have chemistry)

Adam is a freak and likes to hurt animals

Micheal nooooo you met that girl five seconds ago you can’t trust her ( even though there is chemistry) and tell her that Max and Isabel are aliens too… so disappointed

Adam killing Valenti was so not in my bingo card

I think this is the weakest so far.

In the Project Clean Slate prison, Michael meets a boy named Adam who is his age but acts like a much younger child, mainly because "dad" Valenti keeps him in that kind of state, and he has grown up in the facility. Adam ends up escaping thanks to Michael and finds the others. There is a girl a bit older than them who seems to be psychic and is stuck in a cell next to Michael after Adam escapes.

Isabel breaks up with Alex because after The Dream, she thinks about Michael in a Different Way because of course.
Adam totally crushes on Liz and Max gets himself into mental knots about BuT wHaT iF LiZ LiKeS hIm BaCk? But then he realizes Adam may not have all his mental faculties, which would make sense.
Michael also has an existential crisis too. After being stuck with Cameron for a few days he leads himself to wonder if he LOVES Maria, Isabel, or Cameron. Because ah yes, you can fall in love with someone who barely parsed out you're an alien after 4 days.

I forgot the ending is what happens in this book, and it's both good and terrifying.

This book continues straight on from the previous with Michael's capture at the hands of Valenti in the compound, and Max recovering with the use of the crystal's they broke into the compound for. Filled with new characters and a gripping storyline, this book is a brilliant sequel to the last, finishing with a strong cliffhanger for the next book to resolve. I noticed alot of similarities between this book and the storyline to Season One of Roswell, the show this book series spawned but rarely lines up past the first book, therefore if you enjoyed the show you will more than likely enjoy this book series.

This series just keeps getting better! I honestly can’t say enough good things about it—it’s such an easy, addictive read with so much happening at once, which makes it super fun to dive into. This particular book had a darker, more mysterious vibe that I wasn’t expecting, and it definitely left me with a ton of questions. I’m crossing my fingers we get some answers in the next one! We also met two new characters, and I’m really hoping they’re not all bad, because that ending? Let’s just say it raised a few eyebrows. Overall, such a solid read!

My Review: This was another good one but like the first two, they’re paced really fast and it was really throwing me off with how quickly Isabel seems to change her mind on her men STILL 🤣. The cliffhanger, as usual, is very intriguing. But this one also didn’t really feel like it gave any character development or relationship development. Lots of filler conversations
My Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️.5/5

Tropes: forbidden love, alien romance
Triggers: murder

The Intruder and Michael in the Alien Cell

There were a few errors in grammar but the story content was very interesting. The character descriptions was well done as was the scenes description. The time lines were believable along with character interactions in the book. Good research on science jargon and geography of the location.

this is where i started to hate michael a little for maria's sake

another thing to keep in mind: this is truly an Adults Are Useless book series. people get killed. people disappear. "natural" disasters occur. the town just shrugs and moves on, and the saving the world chaff is left to the kids.

poor ray, though.

[DNF] I was hoping the trash pleasure of this series would hold out long enough for what I hoped would be the most long game slow-burn relationship to get to its turning points—but Metz is clearly headed only further into characters having fickle confused affections for the purpose of prolonging the love drama and personalities are just vanishing into that.

Really enjoyed this one. A lot happens and we get some new characters. Excited to read more.

Spoilers below

I was a little sad they loose their mentor. But interested in the new Alien Adam who seems like he could be a future villain.

I’m kinda glad the sheriff is gone. He was a great character in the show but he was pretty one dimensional in the books. Never got a real explanation for why he was so terrible, or what he wanted out of it all.

Also curious what they will do about their ship now that they could technically take it (indestructible) as it is.

Ugh, I'm sick of all this relationship drama (and this messy love web that the characters are entangled in). My boy Alex is too good for Isabel but they're probably endgame, so ugh...

Also, when I read this on the Wikipedia page:
"Cameron Winger: Teenage recruit of Valenti. Used to spy on Michael and Adam. Short red hair, about five-ten. Romantically connected to Michael."
I thought Cameron was a boy, so imagine my disappointment when I found out she wasn't lol.

However, this book was pretty exciting (that ending!), the stakes were pretty high and Adam seems interesting so I'm looking forward to the next book!

When Roswell High last left off, Max was fighting for his life to survive connecting to the Collective (the minds and thoughts of his fellow aliens back home) while the rest of the crew were putting their own lives in danger to steal The Stones of Midnight (which allow Max to connect to the consciousness). While Max survives, others are not as lucky. Ray, Max's boss at the alien museum, is killed by Sheriff Valentie, head of Project Clean Slate. And Michael does not return home with the rest.

Now we come to the The Intruder. With The Stones of Midnight, Max survives. Michael has been captured by Valentie and Project Clean Slate, being held prisoner and experimented on. During his time here he meets some interesting new people: Cameron, a girl with supposed psychic powers, and Adam, the fourth mystery alien from their pods. Adam has always believed Valentie to be his father, having known nothing but Valentie and the Mountain, but when he learns the truth he escapes the mountain and finds Max and Liz. During this time Max and the crew are devising a plan to save Michael, and Adam starts to crush on Liz - hard. Meanwhile, Isabel's feelings are changing for both Michael and Alex, in a way she cannot understand - does she love Michael more than just a brother figure? Maria loves Michael but knows something is up with Isabel. And of course we cannot forget Max and Liz (my favorite couple!). They have finally decided to no longer 'just be friends'. It's about time!

In such a small book I am always happily surprised and how much Melinda Metz gives you. There are many characters and relationships to the point that it is hard to detail every one. I love it. I screamed at Isabel and her growing feelings for Michael - what about Alex? I got frustrated and mad at Michael when he started to have feelings for his fellow inmate, Cameron - what about Maria? And I was jumping for joy when Max and Liz got over their hangups.

The Intruder was also not predictable at all, as some of the previous installments were. You learn something about Adam (no spoilers) and Valentie... lets just say he gets what's coming to him. As always, Melinda Metz's writing is seamless, making this a very easy and enjoyable read. While I will admit I still see the show's characters in my head, Melinda Metz has done a fantastic job at offering her readers a new image of our favorite characters and new characters all together. The first few installments in this series were a bit slow, but now the action is really starting to pick up. It might just be me, but being a fan of the show and the series, I just can't get enough of our Roswell aliens and humans.
