This is a great way to introduce kids to dementia.
I especially liked the Q&A section at the back of the book to help further open up the discussion and make sure kids have a good grasp on the disease.

Another book on dementia/Alzheimer disease for children. It just seem like there is more and more book on that subject recently. Anyway, a good book to talk about and bring a discussion about a difficult subject. It cover it well and open the door to discussion like it's suppose to do. The illustrations were not really my style, but they are okay. An alright book, that just look like many others... the lack of originality hurts him a little but it isn't better or worst compare to the other.

This is a wonderful book and loved the colourful illustrations. It is an ideal book especially for children who have a family member with dementia, My late mother had Alzheimer's and it wasn't always easy to explain to my then young children why their 'Nanna' was no longer doing things they once enjoyed doing with her. Recommended.

I love children's books that touch your heart and that teach compassion and understanding. This informative book certainly fits into those categories. Little Buddy adores his Grandpa and they hang out together a lot. They play soccer, go on nature walks, play hide and seek and campout in the summer practising their whistling skills. They spend quality time enjoying each other's company immensely and they truly are an inseparable team.

I got this as a free ebook from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.
I smile for grandpa is a wonderful book about a young boy whose grandpa gets dementia and how the boy helps his grandpa.
The books starts with a page giving you five tips for talking about dementia with children, and I think that’s a wonderful idea so parents are ready to tackle any eventual questions their child might have while reading the book.
As you read the book you will see the full/page illustrations on every page ...more

Grandpa suffers from dementia.
Little Buddy knows things between them will never be the same.
How do the 2 of them come together & make the best of everything fun.
Comes with a 10 question answer sheet about dementia.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great colored pictures & proper font & writing style. ...more

This picture book explains dementia and discusses how young children may deal with it. The characters are presented as an animal family. The male child is called “Little Buddy” by his grandfather. At the beginning of the story, the boy tells of his favorite times with his grandfather, playing soccer, going for walks, taking camping trips, and playing games. But now his grandfather has dementia and often he forgets. Dad needs to come on their walks, grandpa can only watch the boy play soccer, and

The highest praise I can give this book is that I passed it on to a friend whose mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers because I thought it could be helpful for her to read with her children. I read it with my children, who don't know anyone with dementia, and it led us to have some great conversations. The illustrator's decision on dressing Buddy is genius - it's never mentioned in the story whether Buddy is male or female, and the clothing could go either way. To my daughters, Buddy wa

The sweet tale of a grandfather and his "little buddy" takes a sad turn when dementia hits. Although it takes some time for him to understand what is happening to his grandfather, the young child discovers that this disease does not have to change every aspect of their relationship. Their activities change from hiking and playing soccer to drawing, talking, and whistling together. The book ends in a realistic yet beautiful way, in that there is no sign of a cure, but there is hope for the two's

Tender and straightforward story told from a child's perspective. His grandfather develops Dementia. The narrator shares about their fun times together before this occurs and how life changes as the Dementia worsens.
Matter of fact style which emphasizes the love and care remain - they just change.
Facts and information provided for adults to help kids cope with the changes illness brings.
Questions and answers for kids at the end ...more

This book really struck a chord with me. I adore children's books that teach compassion and understanding and “I Smile for Grandpa” definitely did that!

Very heartwarming and informative
This is such a beautiful story about how a young puppy learns about dementia seeing his grandpa go through it. But with lots of support and care and encouragement from his parents, he learns to adapt and continue to spend time and love his grandpa through it all. There is also a lot of information about the disease and a question and answer section at the end. This is a story of “Little Buddy” and his Grandpa. How things changed when Grandpa became ill with dementia. Being the best friends, Little Buddy had to learn how to keep his friendship with Grandpa and how to cheer him up in life when he doesn't remember most of the stuff they used to do together… The story is educating the kids about dementia in simple words: what it is and how to help a loved one (Grandpa) deal with it and how to still have fun together.

A far-too-understanding kid plays with his grandpa, who has the beginnings of dementia.
I like that the fact Dad has to come along now on their walks is mentioned. Being without grandpa, for example when camping, is sad, but then the memories make him glad, which seems to be the point.
Lots of extra stuff in the back to talk about with the young reader.
3.5 pushed up to 4/5
