Sandman #1

Nocturnes & Nightmares

Rate this book
The most terrifying monsters aren’t found in dreams …

Four young socialites have gone missing in the Chicago area. Two found dead, bearing the signature marks of a brutal serial killer. With the kind of tragedy that mars Nola Tensley’s past, she should be concerned, but without a pot to piss in, all the struggling single mom cares about is making a normal life for her son.

After all, she’s clearly not the murderer’s type.
Or is she?

When Rhett Voss, an enigmatic and handsome stranger, answers her ad for the outdated in-law suite at the back of her property, offering double her asking price, Nola really can’t refuse. Even though the supposed Wall Street Wolf seems better suited for a high-rise downtown—a suspicion that quickly turns into hindsight once she submits to the flirtations of her charming new tenant, and consequently, unearths a series of disturbing revelations.

Her curiosities lead her down the path of a madman, whose moniker, The Sandman, only hints at the grisly nature of his crimes. He’s smart. Evasive. A cunning psychopath with a twisted method of disposing his victims.

And his hunting grounds are hitting too close to home.

Author note: This book contains scenes of graphic sex and violence that some readers may find disturbing.

Kinda feel like the serial killer took a backseat in this one? Is that the phrase? The spice outweighed the thrill in my opinion. Review coming up shortly. My brain is a little fried for the night.

The most terrifying monsters aren’t found in dreams …

Um hello - this sounds so freaking good! And I'm just going to go right ahead and move it right to the top of my pile.

There's something about this man I can't quite put my finger on. Something wild and terrifying beneath that tightly composed mask he wears, like a thunderstorm behind the thin veil of a cloud.

A spine tingling, edge of your seat page turner!! This book was unlike anything I've read from Keri to date! I had goosebumps reading it. Honest to god goosebumps that only Keri's words can elicit from me. The woman is an evil genius, crafting darker and darker tales that push the edge of every one of my boundaries and yet keeps me coming back for more like the addict that I am.

If the blurb doesn't make it obvious enough, this book is NOT for the faint of heart. It's dark. But more than that, it's terrifying. It puts the reader inside the mind of a psychopath as they systematically and meticulously go on their killing spree. It introduces you to a serial killer that's not just deranged, but smart in a way that's allowed them to avoid being caught as more and more women fall into the deadly path.

It soon becomes apparent that in the center of the killer's crosshairs is Nola Tensle, though she may not know it yet. As a single mom after the most devastating of tragedies, Nola is just trying to make it day by day and provide for her and her son. When an enigmatic stranger answers her ad for her rental in-suite, her life takes a sudden turn.

Now I have two words for you here: Rhett. Voss. Sweet mother! This man. GAH! Enigmatic and dark with a past shrouded in mystery and blood, this is an anti-hero like only Keri Lake can write. There's a hidden depravity beneath the surface of the calm exterior that he presents to the world. And you can't wait but finally get a taste for all the hidden desires that lurk just beneath his presence.

I would tell you that this is a dark thriller first and a romance second. The romance unravels organically in a way that's realistic to the story, but you won't be dissatisfied. However, the suspense will certainly take center stage in this first book.

This book kept me at the edge of my seat from beginning to finish. I had to sleep with the lights out for a solid week after finishing and I wouldn't have it any other way. It was a hair raising sort of thriller that spun a dark web and kept you up all night. Love love LOVED IT!

description I'd forgotten how much I love this author's writing since it has been awhile since I have read anything by her. Her RIPPLE EFFECT series was outstanding, and when I read the synopsis for this duet, I knew I had to get my dark and twisted loving hands on a copy. And again, she knocked it out of the park because this book was f-cking fantastic.

description
I legit could not put this book down. I skipped lunch. I told my family if anyone tried to talk to me I'd gut them (don't worry; I smiled when I said it). I locked myself in my bedroom, and I read this one cover to cover. The writing was fantastic. It was well paced. The plot was SO frigging engaging. It was dark. It was twisted. It was freaky. It was disturbing. It was heartbreaking. It was sexy. It was a super slow burn. In fact, I'd say the "romance" probably took more of a backseat to the story setup in this first book. That's not to say it didn't have it moments between Voss and Nola, because it did. It just wasn't the main focus I felt. Not to worry though, because the thriller parts will have you flipping the pages like a crazy person.

description
We get three POVs here. Nola's (whose inner thoughts I found a bit annoying at times). Voss's (who I am just in lust with), and The Sandman's (who was freaky as f-ck and made me want to take a bath). (lol) And speaking of The Sandman I have SOOO many theories about who he is. I feel like the author gave us a lot of red herrings to choose from. I was convinced I had it figured out, but then I thought the person was WAY to obvious. Now I have someone else in mind. Plus a few WAY out there possibilities. Honestly, at this point I have like ZERO idea where this is going and who all is involved. How they are all connected. Or why this is all going down the way it is. I legit CANNOT wait to get my hands on the next book.

Two HUGE thumbs up from yours truly!

Genre: Dark Romantic Thriller
Type: Book 1 of 2 from The Sandman Duet
POV: Multiple - shifting
Rating:

Nola Tensley was struggling as life kept pushing her down. With a son to take care of, she can’t afford to let herself drown. So when an unexpected opportunity came, she grabbed it even though she had her reservations especially with unsolved murder cases littering around. Rhett Voss might come out of nowhere, but he could possibly be her salvation or her own demise.

There’s something about her that I can’t quite put my finger on. She’s strong, but vulnerable in a way that doesn’t come off as pathetic. It appeals to me, somehow.

Voss was one sexy, irresistible hero. He had an aura of mystery and untouchability that’s alluring. Nola might be flustered at times, but I love how selfless she was and did the best of her ability to make things right.

The first few moments were his favorite, though. When realization dawned on their faces and their nightmares came to life. Almost magical.

Out of all the characters, The Sandman was the one intrigued me the most. I loved him and his methodical approach in his crime. My favorite aspect of him is his “cold play”.

Playing with her is effortless. Dare I say, fun. It makes me wonder if she’d be so good-humored while tied to a cross, or laid out across my lap.

The story was engaging and I liked the multiple POVs. Both characters had a palpable chemistry and their pull to each other was sexy. What I wanted more is the desperation of fear, which I hope to get in the conclusion of this duet.

Nocturnes & Nightmare is a cat and mouse story dominance and possession. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a dark romantic thriller.

Nola is a single mom, struggling to make ends meet, trying to give her son the best life she can. Her son is miserable and now mute after witnessing his father's murder. Unbeknownst to her, she's caught the attention of the cities latest serial killer, The Sandman... a killer Voss seems to know very well. In order to finally catch this killer and put him down, Voss needs to get close to the next potential victim. What was supposed to be all business soon turns into so much more when Nola embodies everything Voss never knew he wanted.

This was my first read from Keri Lake and she has me stunned! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, trying to figure out what would happen next. Between the cat and mouse game the killer has going with Voss and new victims turning up right and left, I wanted to see if I could guess who the killer was. But every time I think I'm close, something happens to leave me in doubt. I still think I'm right though. I loved getting the perspective of the killer. While his voice made me cringe and want to cleanse myself, I couldn't get enough of his sickness. Hey, don't give me that look! I'm also a little bit in love with Voss. He's former military and is now employed to 'take care of things'. He's got a special set of gifts that only make him hotter in this fictional world.

Bring on the next book of this duet! Let me scare myself some more, constantly looking over my shoulder, and protecting my eyeballs from any and all threats. I can't stand Nola and her irrational behavior and illogical thoughts, but I love how perfect she is as a victim. I wonder how Voss will protect her and if he'll be able to save everyone in the end. ★ Fingers crossed!! ★

A killer is on the loose in Chicago and Rhett Voss is on the hunt to take him down! In order to get closer to his prey, Rhett rents a room from single mom Nola Tensley. Nola is a spunky woman with a tortured past. Oblivious that the Sandman has set his sights on her, Rhett draws closer to Nola and an unexpected attraction is sparked!

"The woman wears sensuality like gasoline perfume."
Told in multiple POV, Nocturnes & Nightmares is a complex story with multiple complex characters. The stakes are high for everyone to survive the Sandman! With action, terror, and delicious sexual tension, Nocturnes & Nightmares will appeal to dark romance lovers!
"That's what love does to the heart. Its gluttony consumes every lie like a sponge, until it becomes heavy and hard, like a stone."
Overall, I have always been a huge fan of Keri Lake's work. She is a truly gifted storyteller who crafts the most fantastical worlds. Be forewarned, you will be dying for book 2 because this one will leave you hanging and desperate for more! I cannot wait to find out what happens next!

“When a man has lived his entire life as a monster, nothing really scares him anymore. Not even the darkest demons from his past”.

For the past few hours I’ve had one question that’s been swirling around in my head constantly. Why the fuck did it take me so long to read this book?!! Ive read the blurb along with a few reviews and yet, I still had this book on the back burner. Never again will underestimate this author. Never again will I doubt her storytelling and her ability to give me goosebumps within the first few chapters because after reading this, I have two words:

tenor-19

Twenty eight year Nola Tensley has had a rough go for the past few months and as fate would have it, things were about to get even worse. Struck with a crippling tragedy that has impacted her eleven year old son, Nola is not only struggling financially but unbeknownst to her, she’s captured the attention of a serial killer.

Now out of options and at her wits end, Nola decides to rent out a part of her property for the extra income for one month only. But that decision has made her come face to face with the dark and alluring Rhett Voss who wants nothing more than to do his job and be left alone. Two single people with more secrets than anyone could ever imagine, blaring sexual tension and a killer on the loose? What could go wrong?

“There’s something about this man that I can’t quite put my finger on. Something wild and terrifying beneath that tightly composed mask he wears, like a thunderstorm behind the thin veil of a cloud.”

RHETT VOSS.
Just take in those two words and exhale slowly. I have no words when it comes to that man and I like the idea of him hindering me speechless. Have you ever started a book and the minute you read the hero pov, you immediately feel this rush in your veins, sweaty palms when you flip the page, and think to yourself, this MOFO is going to ruin me?!! Well that’s exactly what happened to me and let me tell you, I regret nothing!! He was the perfect anti hero and such a sweet bad a** if that makes any sense and if you got on his wrong side…..

d66

Seeing that this is the first book in the Sandman duet and we were left with a cliffy that made my skin crawl, I’m off to read book two so I can get some answers because these characters are crazy AF!! But if you’ve been following my reviews for a while then you know that I absolutely love that!!

If you love dark thriller romance, then this one is definitely for you.
Warning: this book does contain extremely disturbing scenes and ends on a cliffhanger.
You’ve been warned.

Okay I’ll admit it I stopped reading this a couple of times early on. I questioned why I was even reading this book in the first place. How on Earth had this even ended up on my list?

The reason.
So many of my friends had read and loved it. The reviews were great and so it became an automatic want to read.

I read romance. I’d assumed it was a romance albeit a dark somewhat twisted romance but several pages in I wasn’t so sure.

At times early on it read more like it could turn into a horror. It didn’t. Well not an outright horror but certainly dark and disturbing. I stuck with it and I found it addictive reading.

By the end I was mesmerised and left wanting more. And so so glad I’d waited until both books were out.

It’s safe to say when the hands were dealt Nola didn’t receive a good one. But then neither did Voss.

Nola’s life has been eventful and the fact that she’s still functioning says a lot about her inner strength.

Voss has his own demons. The main one he thought he’d conquered. But his demon appears to be back or someone is back pretending to be him and he wants to play. He also has Nola firmly in his sights. Now Nola is nothing to Voss just a pawn in the game. That is until he meets her. Until he spends time with her and she awakens something inside him.

But who will win the game?

I’m absolutely loving this book. Yes it’s dark but it’s not too dark (yet) buts it’s also addictive and I’m moving straight onto the next one now.

Genre:  Dark Romantic Thriller
Type:  Book 1 of 2 from The Sandman Duet
POV:  Multiple - shifting

❝ Monsters are real. He was sure of it.  Undeniably certain that the one holding the sharp blade on the other side of the door,...was the same man his classmate had told him about.

KL N&N teaser

Nola Tensley at twenty eight years old had a bad marriage and after tragedy hits she only ever wanted to survive and be strong for her son.   I liked her attitude and strength; when a stranger applied to her add to rent a room she was skeptical at first but she was excited at the same time about the help she needed so badly but yet didn't want to ask for.

❝ He's both handsome and intimidating, but the scar across his face adds an edge of menace, sending up red flags... He looked like danger, wrapped in a nice suite.

Rhett Voss was a complete badass, I loved him so much since he was first introduced in the story.  He was hot, sexy and intriguing all at the same time.  He didn't see himself as a hero which made him more lovable character to me.  He had a goal and a mission to accomplished but yet he still couldn't stopped himself to care for the people around him.

❝ That was the beauty of masks.  Essentially, everyone wore them.  All of them hiding what truly lay beneath all that makeup and mannerisms.

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect in this story; I was kind of hoping to get a bit more action but I was okay with the thriller and suspense in the story.  The romantic connection was on point but it still kept me guessing and have so many questions that need answers.  I loved having three point of views because it kept me hooked on the story and the characters.  I seriously can't hardly wait for the conclusion of this duet so I can get the answers I seek.

Nocturnes and Nightmare is a story that will most likely get you hooked from page one; a total page turner that you will not be able to put down.  This story is dark and disturbing and so good, readers who enjoy dark thrillers will find it appealing.

At 28 years old, Nola Tensley is a single mother raising her son and is financially strapped. As a short-term financial solution, Nola rents the in-law quarters on her property to a man who is willing to pay a premium for his privacy. However, she is unaware how she has caught the attention of a killer.

“He doesn’t look like a potential tenant. He looks like danger wrapped in a nice suit.”

Rhett Voss isn’t a stranger to violence or depravity. Since leaving Chicago, he hasn’t looked back but a significant person from his childhood is beckoning him to play deadly game. Focused on the end goal, Voss is prepared to win, but he doesn’t expect such a pleasant distraction.

“It appeals to me somehow. The tenacity of a woman who refuses to break, even when shit keeps weighing her down. A sadist’s wet dream.”

Alternating between POVs, the character development for Nola and Voss is steady as passages from the past are intertwined into the present. From the first page, an edgy tone is set with the author delving into a grim situation, which soon escalates into a chilling, psychological thriller. As the reader knows these characters are being watched, it adds to a constant unnerving feeling of “when and not if” the inevitable will occur.

“They all played that game - trying to appeal to some empathy that just didn’t exist.”

With Voss, I like how he exudes kinky dominance from every pore and tests Nola’s limits, as their connection is pretty steamy. The Sandman is eerily fascinating with his sinister rituals. As I’ve come to expect (and enjoy) a gritty landscape from a Keri Lake book, the thriller direction of this book is captivating and I like how boundaries are being pushed.

Nocturnes & Nightmares is a dark and disturbing romance thriller that will capture a reader’s morbid curiosity and titillate in unexpected ways. I look forward to reading the conclusion in Requiem & Reverie.

Keri Lake is an author I’ve come to trust over the years. I know when she sets a mind on something that she delivers and never disappoint me. So when I hears she left her dark romance aside to write a romantic suspense thriller, I was all in!

"When a man has lived his entire life as a monster, though, nothing really scares him anymore. Not even the darkest demons from his past."

I went in Nocturnes & Nightmare completely blind! I didn’t know the blurb, not the characters’ names, nothing. I think it added to my anticipation with what’s happening in the book!

I was constantly at the edge of my seat trying to make some sense, piecing the clues together and trying to guess who’s behind it all.

Told in three pov’s you’ll get all you need to be in dire needs of book 2 by the end of the book! Things happens slowly to put you in a state of both worry and lust. There I said it.

While the romance is taking a back seat, let’s be clear Nola & Voss’s attraction is all over the place!

"The intersection between a sordid past and my pleasure is a consummation unfulfilled, a temptation I won’t indulge in, for fear that I would be just like the men who raised me"

Rhett Voss is a hitman who’s past is catching him up. Forced to return in his hometown, his link to a certain killer brings him right to a place he never expect. Meeting Nola and caring about her was not really the plan.

Nola Tensley is a mom trying to protect her son from the ugly world we live in. Unfortunately the last months had been rough for her and her little boy. Oblivious to the danger surrounding her, she has no idea who her new neighbor is, nor can she knows that he might also be her best chance at survival.

Nocturnes & Nightmares is the perfect set-up for what’s to come. The writing is as usual impeccable, leaving you with so many questions your head won’t stop spinning!

I wish I was a little mind reader to know what’s in Keri’s head right now. But like I told you I trust her to make it all clear and perfect by the end of Requiem and Reverie.

Nocturnes & Nightmares was amazing, fascinating and disturbing. It had me intrigued, glued to the pages and had my mind going a mile a minute coming up and discarding theories on who the Sandman is. I think the author did a great job of balancing the moving parts, of balancing the razors edge between thriller and romance, of keeping the reader poised on the edge of their seat dying to know what happens next while making them fall in love with what shouldn't be lovable. Voss is not a knight in shining armor by any stretch of the imagination but there's something about him that's compelling that makes the reader fall for him knowing full well they shouldn't. This author excels at making the seemingly unlovable lovable. I loved this book, highly recommend it and cannot wait to read the conclusion.

FANDARKTASTIC!!

A spine-tingling, hardcore thrilling read! A must read for 2019, a dark reader's dream.

I don't know why I hadn't read Keri Lake before Juniper Unraveling, yet here I am second book by her down and I'm in awe of her ability to keep me guessing. This book was a dark lover's dessert. Edgy and eerie. Sadistically written with mystery that will have you scratching your head. You know that feeling, it's when you close a book and your body is so wound up, you could run a mile? Just me? I was on a high with no where to go. My fingers were flying across my phone, like who read this, I need to talk. I need to discuss this amazingly written book. I can't even begin to write a review worthy. This story checks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned. A suspenseful, depraved, dark romance. The main characters bring painful pasts and a bit humor into the mix.

“And you’re not some creep who keeps bottles of Jergens to put the lotion on it’s skin.”
“Do you have something against Jergens?”

A third POV was like hanging out inside Ted Bundy's mind. Complete and utterly fucking twisted. I felt like I was walking into a horror film with a blindfold. Raised hair and all. I love how the author build-up every single encounter with brutal strength and demented emotion.

"If he timed it right, he could work himself up to climax the moment she took her last breath. And what a glorious moment that would be for him."

Let's not forget. THIS is a romance in all of it's dark. It's bipolar disorder and cake. You get your dark chocolate and you eat it, too. 😂 I absolutely loved Voss. His mommy issues included. You'll know what I mean when you read this. I'll never look at a wine stopper the same.

I could really go on and on and post all my highlights, because this book. A masterpiece of psychopathic tendencies. I LOVED THIS STORY AND CANNOT WAIT FOR THE CONCLUSION!

Nola Tensley is a single mother who has been knocked to her knees by the experiences she has faced in life. It’s to her testament, and the fierce love for her son, that rises to feet to fight tooth and nail for as best of a life as she can give him.

Money as always is tight but to help ease the burden she has advertised for a lodger to reside in the annex to the back of her home. By nature she is a pessimist but her cup runneth over when she finds a lodger who is eager and willing to pay over her original asking price.

Her out of place, somewhat rude and reclusive lodger is Rhett Voss. He’s dark and sleek and she can’t seem to shake off the something being amiss with him. He reeks of money and luxury, but her instincts are correct when it comes to whiff of danger that hangs in heavy plumes around him.

As readers we are introduced to the man behind the mask with Voss. We know Nola should heed her reservations about him, but yet, knowing his reasons for being there change the game completely. In honesty I didn’t second guess my ease in thinking of him as a dark hero. He’s admittedly frightening, but I must say I shivered for all the wrong reasons. The story is a perfect balance of danger, exhilaration and fear, wound together tightly with tension that is set to break in spectacular fashion.

Keri Lake is an author whose stories come off the page and play like a reel in the mind. The words fall away with the images she conjures, and the hair-raising sense of anticipation that starts as a prick soon turn into full blown shudders that race down your spine.

This would never be a 5 star read, and i’ll Never re-read this book, unless I’ve totally forgotten it years down the road and curious enough to flip the page.

It’s 3.5 that I rounded generously to 4. Could go either way. But bc it’s “Free” on KU, I feel more generous.

BUT, it’s still good entertainment.

It’s supposed to be a suspense thriller Romance. The reason it’s not 5 star is that it’s not stellar on any one of those components. The romance is barely there. And barely develops at 95%.

1 entire star off the heroine, who is not terribly appealing. She’s a single mom who got drunk, leaves the door unlocked with a stranger in her home, who could have done something awful to both of them, and then had sex with Voss, who’s the stranger she doesn’t know too well, toward the end, with no real feelings whatsoever. Calling her bro to tell him she isn’t coming to pick up her son after all since she’s busy banging a hottie in a hotel room.

Just doesn’t make me like her as a character. She’s made some really questionable choices despite being responsible for a CHILD!!!!! Who gets beat up regularly at school, and she seems to care more about banging her neighbor than him!!!!

OK gotta take down the star to 3. Nola pisses me off.

The rest of it is predictable. IF the killer isn’t who I think, i’ll Be shocked. And I’ve thought this since 15%, pretty much the second the character was introduced.

But here goes book 2 to see if I’m right...

And then Voss... not the most compelling hero tho he could have been interesting. Instead, he’s just a guy with a past and a kink. Nothing more compelling than that. Hope book 2 is better...

Keri Lake, what have you done???  When one of your favorite authors hits publish, you hold your breath from anticipation. With Nocturnes & Nightmares, I'm pretty sure I stayed in apnea during the whole book!!!

That's certainly one of the most surprising stories that author wrote.
What to say that won't spoil anything for you though...

Take the plunge in N&N's dark and mysterious atmosphere.
You'll meet Nola, strong, determined and hardworking mom. She will break your heart and make you so proud of her. There is something I absolutely love in Keri Lake's heroines; they are outstanding, you simply don't ignore their presence. In that regard, Nola is no different. But because she is a mom, an amazing one, a badass one, and a vulnerable, she is also very different. She stand up for herself and has that incredible sense of humour.
Voss, her neighbor and renter is the anti-hero I absolutely love falling for. Dark, dangerous, deadly. And Protective.

Together they navigate into the web a serial killer is weaving around them. The tension is palpable, the thrill will grip you. The suspense will keep you on edge all along. Past and present collide, tragedy dances with horror.
The tone is incredibly dark, some scenes utterly chilling. I kept wondering all along and with my suspicions, I can't wait to read more in Requiem & Reverie. The game is on...

I VOLUNTARILY REVIEWED AN ARC COPY OF THIS BOOK. THANK YOU!!!

I enjoy suspense in my romance novels. So I was pretty excited when I read the blurb of this book, and the single parent part was a big plus. It started out really good, and I was intrigued. However, I couldn't fully get into the story. Voss is mysterious and I definitely enjoyed his character, but I couldn't really connect to Nola. I also think the intimacy between the two evolved too fast. It just happened, and I would've enjoyed for their to be some build-up to the moment. I also would've loved to see more scenes with Nola and her son Oliver together.

I liked that the POV of the serial killer was included into the story. I have some ideas of who he might be, but I really hope I am wrong. I like unpredictable stories where the author keeps you guessing. So if the person I suspect is the killer, it would be so obvious and not very original. I wish this book was a standalone instead of a duet, because the story was finished before I could connect to it (it was too short!). I am not completely sure if I am going to read the next book, but maybe I will just to find out who the killer is. I had high hopes for this book, but there was just something missing for me. Overall, it was an okay read for me.

I love Keri Lake's stories as they are filled to the brim with equal amounts of excitement and chills. Nocturnes & Nightmares was a little different from the norm as it had more of a romantic suspense/mystery element versus a true romance. Nonetheless, as always it was filled with shudders and chills and a delicious connection between her characters as the cherry on top. Voss and Nola were sexy and compelling and I swear this story had me on pins and needles the entire time!!

AHHH!! This review will be annoyingly vague to avoid spoilers. But suffice to say this story was amazingg!! I never wanted to stop reading as I was consumed from the start. I was mesmerized and caught up in the story and was absolutely enthralled with figuring out who the Sandman was. I had goosebumps and butterflies and the spinetingling chills were no joke!! I am absolutely consumed and ready for book two! Bravo! 4 stars! ~Ratula

This duet has been on my list for a while now. And it is good,só damn good...
Dark, twisted and with the suspence building,it held me captive until the last page.
Leaving me with a deep need to find out what’s to come.

Nola has had tragedy enough to last a lifetime and the latest, the death of her husband caused trauma to her son,Oliver. Doing everything within her power to help him,the serial killer called The Sandman that seems to roam the streets isn’t on her radar. Besides, she isn’t like any of his victims.....right?
Desperate to generate a little extra income, she rents out the space above the garage to Voss.
He is different from the men she knows, darker with an aura of danger. But he lights a spark somewhere deep inside of her.....

In the meantime,The Sandman is playing with his victims, practicing to perfect his goal....

And i need to know how he could be stopped, how this delicious dark duet will end!
Requiem & Reverie,here i come....

A clever thriller that had me on the edge of my seat with unpredictable twists and just the right amount of alpha hotness. The writing is superb. Nothing about this duet is a cliché. It’s dark and gritty, perfectly paced, and a riveting read I couldn’t put down until the beautiful light that balances the darkness at the end.

Holy shit this was amazing!
Romantic thriller with a side of not-for-the-faint-hearted violence. Seriously, do not read this if you cannot cope with animals/women being tortured as the author describes this to the tee. But, we have a dark, broody superhero to save the day, and that makes it all ok!Phew, my heart!
Off to devour the second book, YAY

Another book with a psychopath, this one WAY WORST than the last one (he's a rapist and a killer), and a man with ... interesting? kinks?... He called himself a sadist so ...
Anyway, it wasn't a bad book, it was actually good. Romantic thrillers are still something new for me 😂

4.5 stars

Nocturnes & Nightmares is the latest Duet by Keri Lake with book 2 being released in May. As usual the writing is awesome and the story grabs you and doesn't let go till the end. I was on the edge of my seat through out the whole story trying to tie it all together. Voss and Nola have amazing chemistry and I think their connection runs deeper than they know. I can't wait for book 2.

Dark, twisted, intense, and intriguing!
Finally, a gripping book that really captured my attention - though it might’ve stood out even more because the last 6-8 books I’ve read were so underwhelming 😅. Either way, this was fantastic! It’s filled with suspense and tension, and at times, very dark and hauntingly twisted — perfect for this time of year 👌.

Dark and creepy, just the way I like it!

If you've read my past reviews, you should already know that anti-heroes are my favorite trope.
What you may not know, is I also have a fascination with serial killers. And before you get your panties in a twist, I don't love them like those loony women who want to date them. I just like reading their stories - what made them who they are, what mistakes they made to get caught, etc.

By putting two of my favorite things together, the author almost ensured that this story was made for me. Adding to the fact that I already love her style of writing, was icing on the cake.

This story begins with the death of Denny, husband to Nola Tensley and father to Oliver. Since that night, when Oliver witnessed the murder, he has been mute. For Nola, she is just a mother struggling to get by, and raise her son the best way she knows how.

Then you have Rhett Voss, a hitman of sorts who works for The Gallows. The men he takes down aren't good people, so while Voss commits gruesome acts, he skates the line of what I've ok with (justifiable homicide, if you will). Through flashbacks, we learn a little about his childhood, and how that may have shaped the man he is today.

Voss comes into Nola's life, when a voice from the past reaches out to him with a challenge, one that puts Nola's life in the cross-hairs. He is the best and worst thing that could happen for her.
- He is the best because he offers her the financial stability that she is desperate for, becoming her new tenant. And as their meeting is far from chance, he is also her protector, at least for the time being until Voss can eliminate the threat.
- He is the worst thing for Nola due to his line of work. His proximity to Nola seems to further agitate a man who is already a few cards short of a full deck.

The majority of this story alternates from Nola and Voss's POVs, which highlights their growing attraction which they continue to fight, knowing it would be a mistake to act on their desires. As a bonus, on occasion we also get the voice of the killer, aka The Sandman. This guy is a psychopath. And hearing his POV definitely upped the creep factor of this book.

The identity of The Sandman is a bit of a mystery. Voss is convinced this man is from his past, but I'm not so certain of that. The author does play some mind games with the readers, to the point were of I was suspicious of every man who interacted with Nola.

As this book is part of a duet, the cliffhanger was expected, but I didn't expect it to be a major one. And we only have to wait a couple weeks for book two, which is manageable. Despite all that, I CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE!!! This book was exactly what I wanted and needed!
