Anthony McGowan has boiled down this incredible book to just 129 pages. Brock is a masterclass of storytelling. Without a wasted phrase, this book packs in fear, empathy, peer intimidation, consequences, responsibilities, and so much more.

Unflinching and honest, there is darkness in this story, yes, but it has a baseline that feels very authentic of childhood emotions. It has resonance and truth. Theres a brighter counterbalance brought in by brotherliness, tenderness and, ultimately, hope.

Absolutely loved this book - read it in one sitting! A beautiful and heartfelt story about two brothers who strive to do the right thing. It tugs on heartstrings and keeps you turning the page right till the end.

I was reading Rook (the last book in the series) and was afterwards persuaded to read the first and second book because I would enjoy them more. I did. As a result, they deserve 1 star.

My problems with the book:

The language was too simple - I know this was written for dyslexic people but I have several dyslexic friends and they found the language too simple too.

The plot was almost nonexistent : boys find badger, boys save badger, boys set badger free. I know that there were sidelines but they

This book was picked up in the spur of a moment in my Sixth Form library to pass the time. The language is extremely colloquial which for the most part, I am not particularly fond of, but the story is enough to grasp you to the end in a desire to see the conclusion. If the story was longer than the 127 odd pages it already is, then I probably would not be giving this three stars.

In a nutshell, the story follows two brothers who, after an unfortunate turn of events with three vile children and

Tense, sweet and brief. It reminded me of one of Roald Dahl's short stories for older children, 'The Swan' (from 'Henry Sugar') when a boy is bullied into wearing a swan's wings. It's the same realistic, everyday story that could affect a young person, with well-drawn characters and meaning bullies.

Our well-drawn heroes here are Nicky and Kenny. Teenage Nicky is drawn by his 'simple' (his words) younger brother into a meeting with local bullies, out with their dogs to bait badgers. Kenny soon

I read the book Brock Anthony McGowan by Brock Anthony McGowan. The main charcter was Nicky and his brother Kenny. Nicky was a shy type of kid, and Kenny is an outgoing type of person. They lost thier mom a long time ago and they are just living with thier dad, who is on bail, and there poor type of family. The setting and time is like during the day, at thier shed/garage, and in the bagers environment. The problem of the book is when they find out some of Nickeys classmates are endangering ...more

Fantastic, powerful story. It is no small feat to offer a complex and engaging story with emotional depth in a short text accessible to all readers, including those with dyslexia, but this novel really delivers. Violent and realistic but never entirely lacking in hope, this is a brilliant read that I absolutely recommend.
Louise (A Strong Belief in Wicker)
An extraordinary book about so many things. Badgers yes, and badger baiting (who knew that was a thing?), but also about brothers, families, bullies, the modern world. Anthony McGown packed so much into this slim little book. It's a treasure.

At times horrifying, at others emotional ... this is the story of Nicky and his brother, Kenny, and how they get pulled into the local bullies scheme to dig out some badgers in the woods. The results are appalling but have consequences that neither of them could have planned for. A short book with a big impact but probably not for animal lovers!

A short, moving book that packed a lot of feeling and thoughtfulness into a few pages. It didn't flinch from some horrid human-on-animal violence and its consequences but finished with message offering a little hope.

Kenny is tricked to an early morning visit to "play" with badgers. Jezbo (Satan and Slag) is there with Rich and Rob (Tina the terrier). Nicky tries to persuade Kenny to go home...
Electro Cat
A story about a badger and how people disrespect badgers.

Book for older children and teenagers, but the writing is visceral and some of the scenes are genuinely upsetting.
Strong storyline. Evocative writing.

A kestrel for a knave with badgers, pretty violent too TBH. A quick read.

Very nice story (albeit a bit upsetting at the beginning) and suitable for reluctant readers as the language is rather simple. Still the story is very touching and engaging.
