Two wealthy, ruthless men are in a bitter war. And Riley’s body is their battleground. She thought they’d taken everything from her. She was wrong. She thought she’d left her tragic past behind. She was wrong. She knows that now. Because she’s standing up on a platform at the Betancourt auction, scorched by the cruel, hungry gaze of the world’s richest men, selling the only thing she has left: herself. Now two men are bidding for her. One has sworn to possess and enslave her. One has sworn to destroy her. Whoever wins this auction…Riley loses.
The full five stars for this gripping read. Whilst At His Bidding isn't a dark read (not in the way that Tamara, Taken was), it did still have that air of tension and conflict that I enjoy in dark romance. On the night when the clocks went forward an hour anyway, reading until 1 am perhaps wasn't the best of ideas but I just couldn't put this down.
An action-packed, intriguing, and hot enemies-to-lovers story, I can easily see how this book would inspire the currently popular bully trope. Ashton was one seriously angry young man, one whom the author cleverly gave just enough grievance too so that his actions were not totally irredeemable. That doesn't excuse his awful behaviour, but it did feel as though he has a very small amount of justification for some of his actions and behaviours. The fact that he also showed good character growth, along with genuine remorse, allowed me to forgive him. And at the end of the day Riley had entered the bargain willingly.
It was impossible not to love Riley. She wasn't too perfect, she made mistakes, took foolish or reckless decisions, but overall loved her siblings, genuinely cared for people and tried to be a good person. The little victories she had, the small triumphs, showed us a heroine with inner strength, and boy did she need it to navigate the threats and manipulations that awaited her.
My only criticism is that the blurb is, to my mind, a little misleading. It literally refers to the first two or three chapters at most. That is, the initial auction and the few scenes following that. The story is more about Riley re-encountering Ashton, the step-brother who hates her, and Gavin, the controlling ex who is obsessed by her. I'm not generally a fan of New Adult books, but I have to say that I found myself liking both characters in this. Rather than finding them irritating and juvenile, as is often the case with this genre, I could believe in why this pair felt more mature in their attitudes and behaviour.
Despite having a few noticeable editing errors, overall the writing was excellent, as was characterisation, plot and pace. I definitely recommend this one.
Omg. what is this big ass lump of disappointment? If you gonna write a book just to finish it, then save us both the headache, and take aspirin instead
Three stars for the 24%. The heroine RY, bitch that she was, I loved her ❤️
This was good. It was lighter than I expected from the blurb, but it was still pretty dark. Plenty of triggers to keep in mind if you have triggers. It flashes between the past and present a bit. There are two anti-hero’s that were both in the heroine’s past. So it’s sort of a triangle for a minute, but you know pretty quickly who the final hero will be. I enjoyed this, but in the end there was just a tiny something missing for me and that’s where the 3 star rating come from. It’s a good read, but it just missed bowing me away.
If you liked Erin Watt’s The Royals and wanted it a bit darker and smuttier, then you’d probably enjoy this.
It was intriguing at first. But meh for the rest. Your typical spoiled rich boys with parents drama. The sex was really disappointing with steamy foreplay but lame intercourse. Love the plot, though. But poor execution.
Another great story from Ginger Talbot! I really enjoyed the spunky heroine. She certainly didn't play the victim despite her less than desirable circumstances. Ashton was the perfect tortured anti-hero and then there is Gavin... In addition to a steamy romance, this book packed a whopper of a plot that kept me guessing till the end. All in all, another great read from this talented author!
23% in--The writing for this book is really poor. Perhaps this is a rough draft that was mistaken for the finished product. The characters are so one dimensional it's cartoonish. I usually hate when a story alternates between the past and present but this format is the only thing working for this story at this point. The author is purposefully leaving tiny cookie crumbs that I'm ashamed to say I'm dutifully picking up one by one so I'm going to try to tough it out and see where this story is headed. I guess I have to give credit that the story has me intrigued somewhat.
33% in --I'm so pissed at the heroine I could scream!! I understand protecting one's family but a morally balanced person couldn't sit by and allow things to unfold as she did.
82% I did everything in my power not to DNF this book but I just couldn't find a single f..k to give after this most recent fork in the road. The plot twist in this book were so numerous but in a bad way. The hero's reasonings were about as sound as 5 year old gorging on Halloween candy 3 hours after bedtime. I skimmed the last 18% of this book and even that was painful and ultimately unsatisfying. This book just sucked.
STORY: I have loved every story I’ve read by Ginger Talbot, and AT HIS BIDDING is no exception! At first, I thought I was reading about your typical virgin auction, but it is so far from typical! Yes, there is a virgin and a very brief auction, but there is also a love triangle, dark, depraved characters, corruption, revenge, hot sex and so, so, so much more going on! It’s a phenomenal story!!!! The only negative is that this book was obviously not professionally proofread. For details on the proofreading issues, continue reading below! Otherwise, this is where my review ends!!!
REVIEW OF EDITING/PROOFREADING: To start with, there were typos such as always using the word MIGHT although it should’ve been MAY, THAT when it should’ve been WHO, CAN instead of COULD, WERE instead of WAS. At times the spacing was off, creating typos such as, “Geoffreyput” which should have been, “Geoffrey put” and, “aspiring” instead of ASPIRIN, making me wonder if this book even went through spellchecker??
GOD was not always capitalized when it should’ve been, semicolons were not used correctly and dashes were used in lieu of em dashes and en dashes. According to the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), apostrophes at the ends of words ending with the letter S were not used correctly (for example, Thomas’ should have been Thomas’s). According to the CMOS, ellipses in the middle of a sentence should have spaces on both sides. However, in this book, ellipses sometimes had no spaces on either side (for example, “trust me…it’ll”), and ellipses at the end of sentences had spacing when they should not (for example, “I’m so confused.. What”).
There were sentences with extra words (for example, “So she’d scrimped and saved for until finally we had enough money to rent a cheap room in Fitchburg”), sentences with missing words (“...but this going to be my mood for the next six weeks straight.”), sentences with the wrong word for example, (“You can seriously ask me that question, after everything that you’ve seen me do?”), and there was one sentence with the same word written two different ways, presumably because the editor or author forgot to delete one of them (“He lets me go in alone and leaves the door open ajar.”). There were even a few instances where the wrong punctuation mark was used (for example, “Like your mother needs any help screwing up her life?”)
The most common mistakes were regarding commas: -Rules for commas and the word OH we’re not followed (for example, “Oh my God” should have been, “Oh, my God”). -Coordinating conjunctions at the beginning of sentences were followed by commas even when they didn’t need one. -The FANBOYS rule was not followed. -Commas were not always placed between multiple adjectives (for example, “Tight little million-dollar pussy”).
Not what i expected after reading the blurb. I kinda expected something a little darker or menacing. It's definitely a hate to love story or maybe pretend hate as both MC had the hots for each other in high school. A N/A read with darkish themes. Two men, one a bit of a stepbrother and the other the boy next door the brother family hates. So of course they both want her in their own way.
Riley our girl, sets herself up for auction because her mother is a piece of work and after her divorce, finds herself into trouble, Riley rushes in like a knight in shining armor when really she should have just taken her siblings and let the law deal with the mom, but then there would be no story. Ashton the step-brother, hates both Riley and her mother because of how they became step family, ot that the step family lasts long, however he hates his dad too all because of what happens with his mom. He was self-absorbed and the story runs away with itself a bit here. Gavin is the boy next door whose family were new rich and moved into ton, stepping on Ashton's family toes etc an has the hots for Riley too.
With one bidding, we see easily who Riley wants even though he threatens her constantly, but this girl is no fainting darling and has backbone, standing up for herself and whimpering when she feels the need too.
Whilst a short story, it does feel incredibly drawn out as the beginning stretches out, with flashbacks to high school etc, and the end when it comes rushes in with a bang and a HEA so fast it has you seeing stars.
So i wasn't overly impressed with it and didn't see/read any triggers unless being poor is one. A bit of violence at the end though so possible abuse but very fleeting scenes. 2.5 stars
No Spoilers - This is one of those you can't really be sure but you think you might know but then again Oh wait, OMG what? No! type of reads.
Let me start with our heroine Riley - You go, girl! Riley is a force to be reckoned with. I loved her wit, and tenacity her comebacks had me laughing so hard - she is loyal (mom needs to go!) to a fault with a heart the size of Texas. What starts out as a means to protect those she loves ends up putting at risk not only her family but the lives of those around her - Will her attempt at saving her family cost her more than she contracted for? Gavin is one of our lead males - he had loved and cared for Riley during their youth until she walked away - When he sees an opportunity to help her and possibly rekindle their past he is the first in line to show her he is the only man for her. Ashton - well the first part of his name is almost spot on. Ashton is angry and a bit self-absorbed. When he sees the woman who destroyed his childhood and his family up for auction there is no way he is going to miss the chance at revenge. A year with her having to fulfill his every whim? Revenge has never been so sweet.
I fell in love with Riley from the opening and some of the secondary characters also stole a piece of my heart- This is a softer style of Talbot's writing than what I am used to. It had more a suspense and mystery feel to it than the deep dark angst I am accustomed to and she did it so well! The characters were easy to connect with and seemed on a more equal ground emotionally - if that makes sense. The story line flowed smoothly and kept me engaged - Until we hit about 80% -I do wish the closing did not feel so rushed - right when we get to the thick of things it seemed like she just summed it all up in a quick couple of chapters - I have questions!! As a reader, I would have been okay with this being a bit longer Overall though I definitely recommend - Entertaining with lots of twists and turns that keep the reader engaged
I loved it, I laughed so much at ASHTON and RILEY with there arguments, GAViN has a dark side he is all about control This all started when Riley mother married Ashton father, who caused Ashton mother to be an alcoholic , Riley mother is a good digger, Ashton father only married her because she was pregnant, stating the baby's were his ,Ashton father found out that jo , lied and out they go no money no car zip, Riley felt bad for her siblings and said she had some money to take them to a hotel Six years later Riley sells her virginity for one million dollars and agree to stay with the buyer for one year Ashton wants to buy her for revenge, because her mother destroyed his mother life And Gavin wants her to control her he has a very dark side , story is a good novel , I said to much about the novel, I just hope you read it for yourself, a very happy ending, emerald heights is for the filthy rich people who are snobs, and everyone no each other business, oh and there is a family feud between winterbourne and Northcote family

So this was a bit difficult for me to review because off two reasons, 1. I imagined something different after reading the blurb and 2. I always expect her books to be a little more sexual exploitation/violence maybe rather than humiliation, - granted I have only read 2 books previous to this one, so I am still a newbie to her work ;). Thats not saying the book is bad by no means but I still have this expectation that I need to adjust. This book was no different. After the initial confusion or wondering on my part I actually really enjoyed the book. I think she is amazing in describing humiliation from the H towards the h and I do like their chemistry and interactions throughout the book. Therefore I can definately recommend this book for everyone who likes her books and for people who are new to her work who are interested in this genre, just keep in mind that it is different than most books with the same theme. But that is not a bad thing but shows how special the others work is in fact :)
I usually fall head over heels for Ginger’s books, but this one just isn’t for me I think. Don’t get me wrong the story itself is good, totally worth reading, but I expected it to be darker. This is probably my fault since I saw that a new book came out, and one clicked without knowing anything else.
The last 25% of the book seems to be at warp speed compared to the previous 75%. I wish it would have been spread out a bit more. I thought Ashton would be darker but he kinda just all of a sudden does a 180° and proceeds from there.
As I said in the beginning the story is good. Riley is a lovable main character who is not weak which is usually the case with most female characters in these types of stories. She is sassy and completely assure of herself. She doesn’t lower herself to behave how others treat her.
This book pulled me in from very beginning. A young girl, desperate to help her family, willingly offering herself up at auction to any man willing to pay her minimum bid requirement for a year of her life.
Standing on the auction platform, Riley sees two faces she knows extremely well and instantly regrets her decision.
Ashton, her ex-stepbrother from the depths of Hell and Ron, her controlling ex-boyfriend's employee sent to do his bidding. Whoever wins, no matter what happens, the next year of Riley's life is bound to be a miserable hell on Earth.
This book wasn't as dark as I've come to expect from this particular author, bit still extremely good and kept me very interested throughout.
I haven't missed a Ginger Talbot book release and this book won't stop me from continuing my love for this author, her books and her writing style. I look forward to the next book.
Sex, lies and videotape...lol. This book has it all!
This is a dark romance, enemies to lovers story with a love triangle to boot. When Ashton and Riley end up in the same house because Riley's mom gets knocked up by Ashton's dad, it became a battle zone. Ashton blames and hates Riley and her mother for the divorce of his parents. Enter Gavin who hates Ashton and wants to be with Riley. Six years later and after some stupid decisions by Riley's mom, Riley is forced to sell her virginity to get her mother out of trouble and to save her siblings. Both Gavin, who wants to own her and Ashton, who wants to extract revenge, end up bidding on her. This story is intense, dark, emotional and has Riley caught up in the middle of Gavin and Ashton's feud and Riley's body is their battlefield. This is a great dark romance read and I highly recommend it!
Wow, for a 190 page book, this was jam-packed with details, drama, love and spice. I felt the author covered so much back story and details in everything unfolding w/o it feeling rushed at all or needing more information. It was executed perfect! And a perfect read to pull me out of my reading slump.
Riley , Ashton and Gavin, a love triangle from hell. What do you do when your ex step brother and ex boyfriend find you up for auction and have a bidding war to own you for a year ?
Well you freak out, that's what. But as the story progresses its filled with hatred, redemption, forgiveness and the melting of cold ice hearts. Ending in a love that they both dreamed of.... yes both, so ones not happy and got what he deserved. Which one will it be ?
Ok! I really enjoyed this book.. With this being said I wish there was a little more to it. Don't get me wrong she knows how to write an awesome anti-hero and a very sassy heroine. With the blurb I guess I wanted more to do with both men fighting over her.
Riley signs up for something to help her mother out of a situation. Let's just say her mother leaves something to be desired. Riley is a strong character, and I love how she has a backbone. Ashton has a huge chip on his shoulder, and blames Riley for a lot of things she has no control over.
The things I wish were just a little different....... I know they met in high school, but I felt that they had that mentality through the book. I wish there was a little more of a storyline concerning Gavin.
For a while it seemed that this was my book come true. Finally, a story that held it's own against Vicious: LJ Shen. Then it lost its way. A lot. The 'Gavin' thing - the light and dark - was a great idea, that didn't materialise in the way it should have. Gavin wasn't real; he was a caricature of a person. He couldn't hold my interest, ever; an empty and shallow character. What was the point of him or his dad, even? I was really loving this story until Gavin. Then it went south. Way south. The ending was very unsatisfying, and the sex scenes old and tired. It dragged.
I'm even struggling to remember the protagonists' names. Oh well. That sums it up I guess. I'd read more by the author, but this was ultimately a huge disappointment. It was FREE to read with Kindle Unlimited.
I enjoyed reading this but sorry I thought it lacked passion. There wasn't much sex or kinkyness (I know! We moan when there's too much too lol) but what there was seemed rushed and bland. What I did enjoy was the refreshing change that the h, Riley, has no problems denying her attraction for the H, Ashton. She wasn't a simpering mess of denial like I get fed up of reading in most other books. And it had me chuckling how Ashton struggled because Riley wasn't reacting the way he wanted. Overall this is a good read, not very dark for a Ginger Talbot book but still enjoyed it :)
Nurse’s aide Riley Kowalski thought she'd sunk as low as she can go when she's on the block at an auction for virgins. The winner will own Riley, sexually, for an entire year. When Riley looks at the audience, she spots two familiar faces and realises she hasn't hit rock bottom after all. For Riley, the world has no bottom. Ashton Winterbourne wants to destroy Riley while Gavin Northcott is obsessed with Riley. Riley's just a pawn in a game where she doesn't know the rules or who all the players are. Will Riley emerge a winner or a loser when the dust settles?
At His Bidding is an intriguing, suspenseful and steamy story full of twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat
When Riley entered herself into the auction, she did it for the sake of her family. Her mother had made some very bad life choices and Riley and her younger twin siblings were paying the price. Riley took things into her own hands and forced herself into a battle with two people she hoped she would never have to see or spend time with every again. In a battle of wits against these two powerful men, Riley was bound to come out not only hurt but damaged.
Ginger Talbot has shown yet again that she is a very talented author she pulls you in and keeps you on the roller-coaster ride until the very end. Even through your tears, she keeps you turning the pages.
I was very excited to read this book, and I liked many parts of it, but everything at the end was so rushed. Between Gavin and Ashton, figuring out their true intentions, and the troubles that hounded Riley at every turn, I liked the suspense and the romantic/dark development. But when things take a bad turn, I felt like all of a sudden someone hit the fast-forward button, and everything was playing at 4x speed. I think this book had a lot of potential to be a darker and steamier book, but it fell a little flat for me. The main saving grace was Riley's character. I loved her spunk, her sass, and her fierce and unwavering devotion.
This was pretty good. There were a few editing errors in my kindle version that I read, like misspelled words and such, but nothing too distracting. Plot-wise, I enjoyed the book. It just felt a bit rushed towards the end, with a wrapped up in a nice bow type ending. The main female character was strong and quick witted. The main male character was brash, but I couldn't really hate him. Both their character's seemed well rounded to me. Going into this, I thought it was a dark romance, but it seemed more regular romance for me except for maybe the very beginning of the story. So nothing too dark here. Pretty vanilla, but still good.
I have liked this author on the past. I did like the premise of the story. Unfortunately, there was very little character build up or chemistry between the characters. Emotions felt forced and fake. The story was slow in the beginning, then went way too fast in the end. But the thing that frustrated me the most was all the grammar errors... "He pinched my nkpple hard"??? Words were just missing in a sentence. "The world wouldn't survive if she was in it.....when it was clearly "she wasn't in it". New sentences not starting with a capital letter?? Where was the editor??
Riley and Ashton are teens in high school. Ashton makes Riley's life a living hell and then they don't see each other for 6 years. And when they meet again under unusual circumstances the bullying starts again but with adult consequences (no spoilers here). This book was so good! I love every one of Ginger Talbot's books but this one broke my heart with how much Riley went through and how strong and resilient she was. A lesson of remaining true to yourself no matter what life throws at you is the outcome of this story.
Not enough angst. Not enough inner dialogue. Keeps reverting back to high school memories but I genuinely felt like they were all still in high school, what with their juvenile antics. Didn’t really feel the bond but felt the maliciousness. Hated that it was made too easy to identify who she wanted. The trope was a good one and so I waned it to be explored in a more ‘adult’ way and not the ‘predictable, overdone, juvenile way (in which the guy she doesn’t want was ‘crazy’ to begin with apparently)
This is an intriguing read with one man obsessed with a woman he wants to possess and the other who hates her with a vengeance. Riley has hit rock bottom trying to save her family from the ever growing mistakes of her mother. Ashton and Gavin have be enemies all their lives and Riley has been wedged between them as they battle over her. Lots going on in this book, you never know who is the bad guy and even towards the end the twists keep coming. Great read.
I can’t say enough good things about this book! I loved everything about it. I love seeing a strong women who is still submissive with a dominant man. Riley really wants Ashton & he hates her because of her mother. Can’t get better then that, but we know hate turns into love when you have the right girl and great chemistry. I want a second book with these two. Loved it!
