When an enemy makes overtures of friendship, is anyone safe?

An unexpected invitation from wily King Frederick causes composer Joseph Haydn to fear he’s walking into a trap. After all, the Prussian King has never had any use for Haydn’s music. His Majesty seems more intrigued at Haydn’s being the son of a market-judge.

Worse still, the invitation appears to stir up suspic

King Frederick issues an invitation (an order actually) for Haydn to meet him. Haydn definitely thinks its a trap. The King has never appreciated his music and its a bit difficult to understand why. The Kings of this time are such wily beings that nothing they ever do seems to be what it should appear to be. It is wheels within wheels within wheels.

The story shifts from one point to another. From Empress Maria Theresa to Haydn to King Frederick himself. In between there are plots and sub plots a

I love Nupur Tustin's love of Prussia, a place near and dear to my heart though my ancestors who came from there are separated by many generations from their home town on the Baltic Sea. Prussia, or Pomerania, or Poland: talk about an indentity crisis! It's amazing to realize that not even 200 years ago, Germany, Austria, and Poland were not the nations they are now. They were empires, and Napoleon wreaked havoc on their borders, as did the world wars. We see Regency Romances all the time, but s ...more

Welcome to the world of the Imperial Courts in the late 1700's. Frederick the Great was the King of Prussia, Catherine the Great was Czarina of all of the Russias and Maria Theresa was the Hapsburg Empress of Austria-Hungary. Kapellmeister Joseph Haydn was the composer in the court of Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy who was a close friend of Empress Maria Theresa's.

At the request of King Frederick, the Empress Maria Theresa, Prince Esterhazy and Joseph Haydn have been asked to a political meeting in P

PRUSSIAN COUNTERPOINT by Nupur Tustin
The Third Joseph Haydn Mystery

When Empress Maria Theresa summons Joseph Haydn, he's stunned to find that the great Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach has requested to meet him. There is much more afoot, however, than musical interest. King Frederick of Prussia is up to something and the Empress, along with Prince Nikolaus of Esterhazy and most of his household, including Haydn, venture into Potsdam to discover what. Does the Prussian King wish to prevent war? Or start

What a pleasant surprise this story was! This author was able to take a period in time when the famous composer Joseph Haydn was the Kapellmeister—Director of Music—to the powerful Esterházy Princes, and mix in political drama, court intrigue, murder and theft. As with Books 1 and 2 in this series, we again join with Haydn and his brother in an effort to solve the mystery surrounding the murder of the Ambassador to Prussia. Then there is another murder of the liason with the Ambassador. Once aga ...more

Meet Marie Antoinette's mother and sister, famous composers Haydn and Bach, and many more actual historical characters who "come to life" and draw the reader into their world. I was very impressed by the author's obvious scholarship and "feel" for the period, the people, and the political situations involved, but don't think of this book as a "scholarly tome," because it is first and foremost a fascinating mystery story! The reader doesn't need to know anything at all about the time period to en ...more

In 1768 Haydn and his brother Johann accompany her Majesty Empress Maria Theresa and his Serene Highness Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy to Potsdam. This is at the request of the King of Prussia. But it is not long before they literaally stumble across a dead body. But how is this all related to the political climate of Europe and who is the person engineering the events.
An interesting and enjoyable well-written mystery. Althogh the third in the series the book can certainly be read as a standalone st

I really liked the mystery in "Prussian Counterpoint." It kept me guessing until the end! Just when I thought I had the murderer figured out, Nupur Tustin added a new twist. I also liked the fact that this book is based on historical fact, and I'm a Haydn fan, so that was interesting! However, I was confused about the characters the whole way through - maybe reading the first two books in the series would have taken away some of that confusion.

This is a fantastic, complex mystery. The historical details, the characters, the plots and subplots... everything adds up to make this a book entertaining and engaging.

The writing is, as always, superb, and this book will appeal to music lovers, history buffs or mystery enthusiast. If you, like me, are the three of them, well, you're in for a treat.

A former journalist, Nupur Tustin relies upon a Ph.D. in Communication and an M.A. in English to orchestrate fictional mayhem. Childhood piano lessons and a 1903 Weber Upright share equal blame for her musical works.
