I went into reading this book partially blind. The blurb doesn’t uncover much, and I was excited as to whether I would like it or not. The Recreators is a young-adult novel that happens in Medieval times and features characters who have God-like powers and are able to change a slight minimal portion of the world.
We follow three separate stories throughout this book:
Filia’s story
A princess who has disappeared and comes back years later to claim her throne. A fierce woman who is a Recreator, but chooses to use the powers for her own benefit. In this story we can see how Filia develops as a character, changes while learning new things, makes sacrifices and answers some of the most asked social questions… A powerful story of growing up, and definitely my favourite one of all three.
Vepresila’s story
She is chosen by the Goddess to serve her, but decides to take destiny in her own hands. This girl grew up with her family in a tribe with different moral and cultural values than what we know. Men and women don’t sleep under the same roof, and boys have to pass tests to become men, otherwise, they are stuck and disrespected. When the girl is chosen to go to the Goddess’ temple and serve her, she realises that the system doesn’t work, and tries to beat it. Finding her own destiny can prove to be a bouncy road, but she goes for it.
Simmiolas’s story
He is a Recreator and comes back to fixes a mistake he made in the past. While he travels, he settles with a circle of people, but they fail to believe he has powers and he doesn’t seem able to change their views on how they see nature and the world. Taking a dear friend with him, he is set on a mission to do what is right, before it is too late.
'’Just because things don’t always go as planned, it doesn’t always mean the outcome will be for the worse.’’
These three stories feature these three different characters, with a lot of characters surrounding them and supporting them. The three stories connect each other at a few points, some sooner, some later. They never fully connect though, which did bother me, as I was expecting a one big ending. The three stories remained separated, which made me think if it would’ve been better to not connect them at all, or create three separate books for them.
‘’But if all places have different ideas about what’s right and wrong, how do we know what really is right and wrong?’’
Despite the story lines and the grammar errors I encountered, this book was truly amazing and I really enjoyed reading it. I loved the concept of the powers, loved the ethical lessons throughout the book, and I absolutely loved watching all of these characters grow in their own kind of way.
There were amazing scenes of what is wrong and right, what fear is and how to overcome it, how to keep going despite making mistakes in the past, and a lot of various life lessons worth reading. I recommend this book if this seems like the genre you might enjoy reading. It was the first book
I read by Desiree Nordlund and I can’t wait to read more books written by her.
‘’The best way to cure fear of the unknown is to admit what caused the fear and watch it until it’s no longer something strange.’’

What Made Me Read It I was sent a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review. The author described it as having themes of power, responsibility and hard choices that would resonate with an adult audience even though the characters are teenagers. That caught my attention as it hinted at strong character development throughout the plot.
The Good "The Recreators" is a young adult epic fantasy novel, with plenty of action and suspense, full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but also thought-provoking moments that will make you stop and ponder. Despite being young adult there is very little of the expected romance typical of the genre, whatever little there is only develops gradually in later parts of the book, which for me is a nice and welcome change... but that's a personal quirk.
Set in a medieval-like setting, the novel follows 3 different story arcs with their corresponding characters and plot: a young tribal girl destined since birth for a secluded life in a Temple, who chooses a different life for herself in the vast unknown world outside the Temple's walls and repressive rules; a teenage boy with magical powers who returns home to fulfill an important mission, despite facing heavy opposition and suspicion from those around him; and a teenage girl who rejects her responsibilities and uses her abilities instead for personal gain, to recover what was once taken from her. Two of the story arcs intercept very early on while the third is for the most part independent, but all arcs are connected by the existence of the Recreators and the timeless school of divine knowledge Mirabilis, where humans with special abilities learn and train to restore balance between nature and mankind.
The world building is imaginative with enough detail to get a good grasp of this particular universe. I specially enjoyed how the author uses a general sense of grayness and muted colors to describe the timelessness of Mirabilis, a school inside a bubble where time stands still; and the fact that the magical/divine abilities of the Recreators aren't meant to rule the world or fight evil but to restore balance to a damaged and dying Nature. It takes a while to establish the characters and background but then the narrative flows at a fast and engaging pace.
"The Recreators" explores themes of personal identity, purpose and responsibility, choices and regrets, morality as viewed from different points of view, social acceptance and conformity to social rules and expectations, political maneuvering and power hunger. The main characters are 3-dimentional, believable and realistic, showing a strong development throughout the story; the support characters are distinctive and help setup and move the plot.
The Not So Good The prose is a little too formal for my taste, personally I prefer a more accessible colloquial style and it's the reason it lost a star in the final rating.

Final Rating 3 of 5 stars. "The Recreators" is an adventure and thought-provoking young adult fantasy novel about personal growth and responsibility. Recommended for those who enjoy epic fantasy and stories that deal with magical powers, political intrigue and the balance between Nature and mankind.

Title: The Recreators
Author: Desiree Nordlund
Review exchange: I purchased a digital copy of this book from Amazon.
Description:
“They have powers no normal mortal human being has. Bestowed with this talent they are sent to be humble saviors of all living. But all of them are not so eager to live their lives according to this plan. They have all paid a high price for something they never asked for. Some would do anything to get who they once were back.”
Review:
There’s a popular concept, “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” and while that’s certainly true, an eye-pleasing cover does aid in catching a reader’s attention. The cover for this book is phenomenal. I would suggest the author work on the description, as it doesn’t come anywhere close to enticing the reader the way the actual book ensnared me. Ms. Nordlund does an incredible job of setting the groundwork for her new medieval world from the very beginning of chapter one.
The scenery descriptions were spot on, and brought to life a mental painting of a dreary, scarred earth. Vepresila, one of the main characters, was easy to fall in love with, her nature capturing a reader’s interest and concern rather quickly. I do think this book could have been split into two – possibly three - separate stories, and fleshed out, but will say the author did an incredible job of setting the stage for what could be an exciting series.
Filled with many twists and turns, this book was an action packed, suspenseful read. I believe any fantasy lover would enjoy this read!

This is a YA fantasy novel that is also suitable for older adults. The story is thought provoking and relevant to our world today. The recreators are humans that have studied for many years in a suspended time training school.their job is to go back to regular earth and help restore the balance between nature and human in order to save the world. The three main recreators face many trials, tribulations, and tests on their journeys.
The author does an incredible job of building this medieval-like world. The use of gray skies, and dreary settings sets a somber tone for the school. The arid scorched earth provides a glimpse of the world if mankind continues to abuse it. Again, the lush, vibrant colors show us the possibilities in caring for our world.
We follow our three Recreators through hundreds of years in their quest to benefit mankind.
I believe all lovers of fantasy world novels will enjoy this page turner.

A lot of promise.. not great follow through.
I enjoyed the idea of the story more than I enjoyed the story. I think if it had been more flushed out, rather than rushed, it would have been great. There was enough content that it could have been two different stories. It felt like there were constantly times when important aspects of the story were skipped over entirely or surmised in just a paragraph. It felt more like a first draft than a finished story.

May 10, 2019This is an amazing story dealing with issues of importance. Issues on man's responsibility for the environment, for other humans; issues on right and wrong, remorse and abilities to move forward. The story is set in a medieval world but the dilemmas are eternal and constantly relevant. I eagerly turn the pages to se what will happen next and find the story line unpredictable.
I love this book.
