Another swing and a miss on the Kindle freebie romances. This would be maybe a 3 star book - a pleasant Regency romance, though predictable and not well written, sorry - but I'm docking it a full star for, seriously, the WORST spelling and punctuation I've seen in a long, long time. Random capitalization in the middle of sentences ("What The Dowager didn't understand"), apostrophes in plural words and other words ending in “s” that don't need them ("The new Countess send's her apologies"), commas sneaking out of sentences they should have been in ("Their lips exploring demanding more") and into sentences where they don't belong ("Now he rolled his eyes, 'I doubt it, besides. It is not just you...' ").

But my FAVORITES were the misspellings! Like these:

"... the man understood his very lively hood depended upon his next statement." Which made me think of this:

description

... or maybe this:

description

Even better: "the chicken coup." Somewhere there's a gang of chickens plotting to overthrow the government.

description

The plot is cute if totally unrealistic: wealthy and handsome (of course) duke, Norwich, goes incognito at his friend's newly inherited estate so he can investigate why the estate isn't making as much money as it should. While roaming the estate he comes across lovely Anne Stafford up in an apple tree, stealing apples because she and her two younger sisters and their aunt ("Aunt Ester," who is apparently a chemical compound in disguise) are so impoverished. They chat, the tree branch breaks and he catches her, and it's love or at least lust at first sight. Norwich doesn't tell her he's actually a duke, but he knows there's no way he can pursue a relationship with a destitute commoner. Too bad fate has other plans ...

Anyway, it's cute if you like super fluffy, rather silly romances (with some steaminess, though it's pretty much all post-marriage) as long as you don't mind that the author apparently used a 5th 3rd grader to do her proofreading.

Content note: explicit bedroom scenes.

This was a freebie. I loved the idea of Ann falling in love with a commoner only to find out later he was a Duke! And it started off sweet...but ended up not as sweet or clean as I had hoped. And I couldn't believe the spelling mistakes or grammatical errors! Her sister started off as Isabelle...and somewhere along the way became Isobel! What? Crazy. I don't recommend it.

Deserving of more stars

This reviewer just couldn't overlook the many, many, many spelling, grammar and punctuation errors that detracted from the enjoyment of the reading.
The story itself was intriguing, the telling of the story much less so.
Next time find a proofreader who actually knows that it's spelled blackguard, and not blaggard...

I got this as a freebie for Kindle. A duke goes to see a friend's estate incognito and meets a country girl there. They get caught in a compromising position and marry. The rest of the book they spend not talking about important things they probably should talk about. The last few pages involve a dangerous episode that would never have happened if one of them had sat down and said, "so we got married kind of suddenly, should we talk about how we feel about each other?"

This book could be better if it got one more round of editing. There are quite a few spelling errers, random Capitalization and sentences. That get broken in the middle. For no reason.

OMFG... I can't even address the story because the fucking punctuation and wrong word choices jerked me out of it every few sentences.

Well, not sentences, but sentence fragments. Not for emphasis, mind you, but because this "writer" doesn't seem to know how to use commas and periods.

Sadly, I was reading in bed and didn't get into the apostrophe abuse and barely touched on the misspellings. I think I stopped to scream and make over 20 notes as it is.

Holy christ on a cracker--at least pay a real editor to keep from looking like an illiterate pretender!

Editor in Disguise?

One can only assume that either this book was not edited or that the person who did edit it was the incompetent. Sentence fragments appeared literally everywhere. (Fragments can be an effective mechanism for emphasis, used sparingly. But everywhere and often? And yes I know I just did that.)

Improper punctuation was also a frequent problem, especially when extended dialogue was involved. And several incorrect words were used, but because they were spelled correctly, they didn’t get caught. Using “made” for “maid” was one incident I remember.

I thought the story started out well, but deteriorated rapidly after the wedding. The problem for me (Spoiler Alert) was that the Duke changed character completely, and not just from his Daniel disguise. He simply wasn’t portrayed as stuffy before the incognito trip as he was portrayed after the wedding.

And Ann, (Spoiler Alert) who starts out as a wonderfully competent and smart young woman apparently becomes a ninny as soon as she discovers she’s pregnant. She knows it is dangerous for a woman of such wealth to be out alone, and promises the Duke she won’t do it again. Nevertheless she does, having forgotten her promise, and gets kidnapped.

Good attributes include a fast paced story, engaging characters (at least initially), and witty dialogue. Too bad the lack of good editing was so distracting.

Loved it

What a great read this story is. Ann has lost everything but, still has her two younger sisters. Ann has managed to find a home with her aunt and does everything she can to keep it that way. Daniel isn't at all happy with his life. After his father died a day after he was born his mother did everything she could to teach him how to be a Duke. When a friend of his needs help, Daniel volunteers but with one circumstance. That he do everything under disguise. When he shows up at his friends property he finds a young woman up an apple tree. He's surprised and can't help but catch her when she begins to fall. Something inside Ann flips when she realizes that this strange man has caught her. What she doesn't expect is for that man be the only man to truly see her. When she asks for his name he gives her his name Daniel. After that day nothing is the same. One afternoon Ann, her sisters, and aunt are returning home when they notice that a staff memeber from the estate is waiting for then at their gate. He gives all four of them invitations to a ball. They're all excited and can't wait for the day of the ball. The night of the ball Ann cant help but wish that Daniel was their to see her all dressed up. When she receives a letter during the ball with the inky initial D on it she knows he's there. She goes out to the garden to find him and can't believe that he's really standing in front of her. Daniel knows he has to come clean work Ann and reveal his true identity. When they're interrupted Daniel knows it's to late. Ann can't believe that she made a fool of herself believing that she might be able to have a future with Daniel. She runs home and doesn't want to do anything with the world. The only bad thing is that Daniel isn't ready to let Ann go just yet. He proposes matrimony and Ann is shocked. What is going to happen between Daniel and Ann?

After reading a previous book by the author, which had a good story, but needed a proof reader, I decided to buy this more recent book, in the hope that things had improved. I was sadly disappointed.

The proof reading has improved a little - there are still many errors, and lots of extraneous punctuation, but it wasn’t as irritating this time. My main issue is with the story. I’m not a massive fan of insta-love, marriage due to being compromised and lack of communication, but these are tolerable if the rest of the story makes up for it. That is not the case here. The Duke actually tells his new wife that she is there to serve him and facilitate his life, that is all, and this is never contradicted, or grown out of. I expected them (after their hasty marriage) to gradually get to know one another and fall in love, instead he eventually says he always loved her, then everything is magically fine. This just left me with a yucky, dissatisfied feeling. I don’t think I’ll read another by this author.

Living a Lie, or Living a Fairy Tale

Daniel should have told her, but he didn't...

Ann should have guessed, but she never dreamed...

There is so much about Duke in Disguise to love. Despite their differences, I really liked both Ann and Daniel. They, like real people, often make assumptions without the proper information. They definitely had chemistry, but a relationship is founded on honest communication. They both needed work in that department. Thankfully, they muddled through and arrived at happily-ever-after, but not without a bit of danger.

G.L. Snodgrass is one of my top five favorite authors. Her stories are well crafted and well paced. I find it easy to get lost within each one, just as a did within this one.

Content alert: There are no vulgarities, but there is some very passionate kissing and one moderately described bedroom scene.

FYI: I also posted this review with Amazon and BookBub. As a 5-star read, it also made my Pinterest page; Rural Reader – My Favorite 5 Star Reads (https://www.pinterest.com/marthajane6...).

The Fifth Duke of Norwich is tired of his title and the simpering from young ladies that comes with it. When his friend leaves to his remote estate he leaps at the chance to disguise himself as Daniel, a lowly laborer. There he meets Ann, living with her younger sisters in a cottage and immediately admires the spunky miss who spars with him every time they meet. But he keeps his secret from her, and Ann can tell something is amiss.

This was a sweet romance with some slightly steamy scenes and two spunky leads! There was a lot of miscommunication or straight up misleading here, and I wanted to shake Daniel for not coming clean sooner. Ann was head over heels for him and it was refreshing that she was so open. There was no cliffhanger and this can be read as a standalone.

The narration was immersive but I did have to bump it up to 1.35 for it to be a normal pace. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

Plot in disguise

This novel works like a movie from the 1920s: Handsome and rich male, beautiful and innocent love interest, villains out of Central Casting (i.e. nothing to make them unique to this plot), Beautiful innocent makes dumb decision which leads her into the villains' territory (though she was clever enough to mark the path the villains were taking her down).
I know that romances have a traditional formula which is why people read them -- forced association, great sex, assumption that relationship (which should be formed from love) holds no love as the viewpoint character sees it; danger for the loved one -- but I expect the steps that create the character's thoughts of love-or-no-love must be plausible. In this novel they are too formulaic.

Interesting love story

I liked Ann Stafford very much. She is the eldest of three orphaned sisters who are impoverished and living with their aunt who has a small allowance. Ann is down-to-earth and finds joy in everyday life. When she meets Daniel she is immediately attracted to this handsome stranger who claims no home nor occupation. Of course, the love story is Ann and Daniel's. The story moves right along. There is a lack of angst that I found refreshing. This is a feel good book through and through. I have already downloaded the next story in this trilogy by G.L. Snodgrass. I like her voice and am anxious to start the next book. Enjoy!

He wanted to find a wife who would love him and not his title.

Daniel was doing a favor for a friend in a working man's clothing. He meets a beautiful young woman but does not disclose who he really is, a Duke and available for marriage. Ann is a merchants daughter with an education and smart wit but all the eligible men around her were intimidated by her intelligence and class. This is an interesting story as Ann must learn how to be one of nobility. A good story with a bit of adventure, an easy and pleasant read.

Wonderful story arc

Daniel and Ann are delightful characters. The plot is engaging, not fast paced. The ride from poor country girl to duchess certainly has more bumps than were in the story. What's the situation with Lady Clarice? Is the ton accepting her? Does she find a purpose for her life?

Stand alone HEA, with hints of further books to come. I especially look forward to Isobel's.

Contains sex scenes, few swear words (mostly the Lord's name in vain), and violence (kidnapping).

2-1/2 stars. Get an editor please, both for content and punctuation/grammar

This book had potential for a good story, but if i had to hear that he didn't love her one more time my head would have exploded. A story editor could have pointed out the redundancies.
And please authors, if you cannot afford an editor at least ask your smartest friend, one who likes to read, to please read the book and point out the mistakes. It is so distracting when you just want to be editing throughout the book.

Love at First Sight

Daniel wanted to help a friend who just became an Earl. So he disguised himself as a common laborer. As he was walking through the orchard he spots someone in a apple tree and rescues her as she falls. Ann wanted to gather some apples but had to climb the tree but when a branch cracked she knew she was in trouble. But as she fell her knight in shinning armor caught her. Ann not knowing that Daniel is a Duke knew she could easily fall in love. A sweet love story.

I loved the Duke, Daniel & Ann was endearing - they made a perfect couple by country standards but not so much with the Ton. The journey they traveled to make it to their HEA was filled with scandal, love, romance, kidnapping & some spice but they made it. There were many misuses & misspelling of words, but I didn't let it get in the way of a fun read & look forward to Ann's 2 sister's adventures.

I enjoyed this read & the characters were fun loving - if editing errors bother you, I suggest you don't read it.

This was my first time reading this author and I thought the plot concept was ok. The first half of the book as Ann and Daniel were falling for each other showed promise, but halfway through the story stalled. The story then ended very abruptly and could have used another chapter to "wrap up" the details other than an epilogue.

In addition, the editing was horrible. I read numerous paragraphs over due to sentence fragments, misspellings and odd wording/plot changes. Glad this was a free book and not something I paid for.

Decent, enjoyable story, but not exceptional. A good proof reader and better editor was needed to make the reading more enjoyable but it wouldn't have made the story any better. Way too many second thoughts over everything by the main female character. She got everything she wanted but still wanted more while doubting what she already had. Lots of stuff thrown into the story that wasn't necessary. Anyway, it was an easy, quick read that was enjoyable. Will I read any of the other books? Probably not.

Duke incognito for love

Ann has the responsibility of 2 younger sisters and a dotty old Aunt in a very remote part of England! Despairing of ever meeting any eligible men Daniel literally drops into her life rescuing her! She is amazed and a little intimidated but also intrigued by this handsome man. Caught in a compromising situation Daniel marries her! Their story is sweet and of course a little intrigue for the path to love!

Pleasant story

Loved the main characters. As pointed out in other reviews, this needs some editing (to get higher stars from me). Incomplete sentences, commas used inappropriately, and a couple misspellings are all distracting from the story and smooth reading. If you can overlook these problems, you will enjoy Ann's personality and strong character. But I won't be reading any other offerings from this author as I found myself mentally rereading and correcting the text.

Pros and cons

I love the stories and the lack of graphic sex. There is great character development and the tension between the protagonists is palpable. However, I find exception with the grammar. The author uses too many periods, breaking up sentences and thoughts in the process. She also uses the wrong word sometimes, such as "want" for "wont" and "their" for "there." I find those mistakes distracting.

DNF at 9% - Far too many errors

Petty coats? Isabella? Jonathon? This author ought to learn how to spell and correct terminology. A 19-year old girl who should have been married already? Nineteen was not yet considered spinster-aged even in Recency England. The author needs to do a bit more research. This could be a good story, but I'll never know. Far too many errors make this book unacceptable.

Disappointed

The premise of this story was amusing (hidden indentities always are), but the execution left much to be desired. The conflict at the end wasn’t anticipated, so that made the conclusion more interesting. My biggest problem was how badly this has been edited. Apparently publishers no longer employ proofreaders. As an English teacher I still demand good grammar, proper use of homonyms and correct spelling. It wasn’t unreadable, but was completely annoying.

Swoon! What’s wrong with me? I’m a sucker for these regency romances. This one had a few mild sex scenes just to be clear. The story was super cute though where a country girl comes upon a man she doesn’t know and he’s secretly a Duke, but doesn’t tell her and they are immediately infatuated with each other. Lol that sounds so cheesy, but I liked it okay?
There were a lot of spelling mistakes. Could have used a better editor.

A average story

I truely loved the book till the last chapter. I truly believe the ending makes or breaks a book. This book was entertaining, sweet, and the heroine was strong, yet unsure. The hero was romantic and sweet till he was undisguised. Then he was "The Duke". Then it ended. What I would have like to see was him realizing that she needed Daniel back. But it ends with his obligatory declaration of love. For that it's just an ok story.

The offer for sale of inferior products such as this needs to stop.

Nice idea of a story. Poorly executed.

Like all the other reviewers said: Editing!

And what the heck happened to the TOC? To not include one is insane. Something easily remedied.

Makes you wonder if this is a product of one of those author farms I've heard about.

Someone's looking to get paid for an incomplete and defective product.

While rather predictable

Nicely written and quick moving story of mutual love and lust etween a duke and a nonpeer woman. Our shero takes on the responsibilities and duties of a duchess and wife of a duke but a fly in ointment is she thinks he does not love her as does she love him

Duke in Disguise (Book 1) By G.L. Snodgrass

A gentle romance

Careful proofreading would have made this book a more comfortable read. And WHEN will you Americans learn the difference between London Bridge (during the Regency this would still have been the crumbling remains of the one built in 1209) and Tower Bridge (built in 1886). Please do your research more carefully in future.
