Kirkus Reviews

Fabulous Goddesses Mrs. Hot here, inspiring, empowering and entertaining you to the vibrant vitality, sexuality, and joy you deserve on your own personal Mission: Possible. Sixty is the new forty--or even thirty!--as we simply refuse to hang up our running shoes or our sexual attractiveness. To the very, fabulous end!

I'm a gorgeous Goddess who transformed from drab to fab, rut to strut, and shot to hot! I found myself in my late fifties facing a future of loneliness, infirmity, and pain--single, in a job from hell, and battling emotional issues that left me unhealthy, unattractive, and in despair. The only men on my sofa were Ben and Jerry! With time goosing me with "it's now or never," I plunged into my makeover, a journey of emotional, physical, and sexual healing; then, after decades away from it, the world of dating, with its mind-blowing contemporary dynamics. Fearless, edgy, and disruptive, I'm Sex and the City's Samantha 2.0, now fully ripened--and that much more wise, joyous, and juicy. We're not getting older, we're getting bolder; my quarter million Facebook followers agree (www.facebook.com/SmokinMrsHot/).

Life should be lived at full tilt at any age, without boundaries and without apology. To that end, I share my journey and wisdom with you here, much adapted from my blog at mrshot.com. Unabashedly feminine yet feminist, I write about health, beauty, allure, sexuality, self-actualization, and the romance and sex life these pursuits make possible--my erotic adventures. Meanwhile, I encourage you to access your own Inner Goddess to create the fabulous life you deserve!

Part One: In Hot Pursuit details my transformation and sets you on your path to an exuberant, sexy lifestyle. In Part Two, I share some of my erotic stories--True Confessions. You'll meet my local MENagerie, as well as a few exotic foreign acquisitions: intriguing men of all ages.

Why exist an existence when we can live a Life la Hot?

THE BOOK OF HOT: AMAZON #1 BESTSELLER!

I’ve got a bad hottitude, and I’ve every intention of keeping it! Though I grew up in the Midwest and a couple foreign countries, New York City is the great love of my life, and I’ve lived there (with a couple detours to Europe and Sedona) ever since college. I attended the Madeira School, studied political science and art history at Vassar College, and have two masters degrees, one in education, the other in fashion design and illustration. I’ve had many a career, spanning banking to magazine editing to public relations to fashion design, which I spent most of my time in. Around the time of 9/11, my social conscience led me to choose a new path as a public school teacher in a poor Bronx neighborhood, an eleven-year journey so grueling I wrote a book about it. Left to deal with the wreck I’d become from that experience, in my late fifties I transformed myself and began blogging about my makeover and ensuing dating adventures (http://MrsHot.com), and gaining a quarter of a million Facebook followers in the process https://www.facebook.com/SmokinMrsHot/. Besides romance, travel is my great passion, and I’ve explored the planet from Easter Island to the Ice Hotel in the Arctic. I have a grown son, and I live gloriously single in Manhattan, ever moving onward, upward and hotward. Because some like it hotter.

The Book Of Hot: A Manifesto Health, mind, body; Romance

This book advocates lots of things, like finding out what your dream job is and going for it, instead of settling for a job you hate just to pay the bills if you’re like the author and of a certain age. She found herself at age 62, an empty nester, post-menopause, and feeling like she needed to stop wasting her time and life on the job she hated. The book is her sharing how she changed that, along with tips on how you can too. It’s pretty good, she quits her hated job and takes up writing, while living on savings. She also begins going to the gym again to lose a bunch of weight she’s gained in the meantime and gotten unhealthy. She starts changing to a healthier lifestyle, including eating habits and keeping active, explaining how. Now, she shares what she did, gym, exercise, changed eating, etc. which left her with loose skin. Then decides she’s unhappy with how that looks and decides to get some plastic surgery. Has a procedure on her upper lids. Then the next thing you know she’s getting the works! Boob job, upper arms trimmed, lower face, Botox and other fillers, lips done. She even had her whole lower body lifted, tummy tuck, butt lift. I’m a bit skeptical how someone living on their savings, a beginning writer manages this. Anyway, it’s a cute premise and I’m all for empowering women of this age, of which I could be included before long. So I’m fine with it as long as we keep it real. The “low interest” on Care Credit isn’t all that low, it was more like a regular credit card when I checked into it a few months ago.

I’m kind of split on this book. While there’s nothing wrong with taking care of yourself, I think she takes it a bit to the extreme. I don’t think my focus is supposed to be all about getting laid and shelling out all kinds of money to keep myself glammed up 24/7 so I’ll be ready for it either. Most people have a life, a job, family and friends and don’t care to spend so much of their time getting their hair done, facials, going to the nail salon, and for Brazilian wax jobs. While some of that is doable for some, trying to do all of it sounds like it's for celebrities with the funds to support it and the time to get it done. There are some ideas for women who want to spice up their lives after 60, and it makes for entertaining reading for that reason. And to read how the author made the changes she did that worked for her, certainly. But for the average woman, I think not so much. Of course, that’s just my humble opinion. Your mileage may vary. My thanks for the advance electronic copy that was provided by NetGalley, author Mrs. Hot, and the publisher for my fair review.

Mrs. Hot is funny, I like the way she writes about her life. I think I would read this book for the comic relief. Unfortunately, her philosophy on beauty and aging--I do not subscribe to. You can only be beautiful if you are thin, wrinkle free, and squeezed into a tight sexy dress wearing stilettos and mucho makeup... Men have to be attracted to you-everything you do to yourself has to be done to make a man want you. No, NO.Just NO. Looks are deceiving--unless all you want is sex. If so, then go for it. However, I find that superficial and shallowness a little too much. If you go plastic you get plastic. Loveless sex only lasts a few minutes. But a life full of real LOVE lasts forever. Again, if you want to read this for the laughs you will like it. Mrs. Hot is very smart and she is witty. The writing moves smoothly and it is an original read --that is why I rated it highly. I do feel that she gives advice for people to care about themselves and that is why I gave it a 4 star instead of 3 star rating.
Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read and give an honest review.

This book has a lot of humor, mostly of the ribald kind. It's a series of blog posts about a woman reclaiming her life in her older years. Although the writing is well done and the articles are funny, it didn't quite hit my funny bone. I am in that age group, and agree that time beats the hell out of the body, I'm a bit more accepting of the years. I don't plan to come under the surgical knife for anything more than necessary. But more power to people who make those choices. Your body, your choices.

I'm a fan of really sharp, clever, WITTY writing. Think Charles Dickens, Christopher Hitchens, James Wolcott. It's rare to find it. But now I discovered wordsmith Mrs. Hot.
This book is a treasure of pith and laughter, and the refreshing honesty is simply out of this world. Mrs. Hot pulls no punches. She teaches us to be authentic and true to ourselves, and that's exactly the way she writes.
She boldly courts controversy, but as she'd be the first to tell you, that's how she rolls: "Deal with it."
I haven't read a book this good in a very long time.
You go, Goddess!

"An entertaining and educational firsthand account of an older woman’s single sexual life."
Kirkus Reviews
"The pseudonymous Mrs. Hot offers a guide to women nearing 60 who are currently in—or planning to join—the dating scene, featuring accounts of her personal experiences and tips on beauty and self-confidence.
Following her divorce, the debut author was a single mother who spent two decades in voluntary celibacy. But after her son left home, she felt it was time for a change. In her late 50s, she opted to transform into a person she called “Mrs. Hot” and start dating again. In this first book of a planned duology, she details her various life changes, from leaving her unnamed “highly stressful public service job from hell” to getting cosmetic surgery, including Botox treatment. She also took up dieting and exercise, mainly because she wanted a “smokin’ hot body” to attract men. She offers her readers numerous tips, including on how to choose the right perfume, adopt good posture, and radiate confidence in order to feel, think, act, and be sexy. Her specific advice on dating, meanwhile, focuses primarily on the online variety. Along the way, Mrs. Hot warns of potential scammers—including men who have no intention of having any interactions beyond the virtual—and provides a bevy of suggestions for stimulating sexting. Later, she shares some of her own escapades in the post-50 dating world. They include dates with men of various ages; some were selfless lovers, she says, while others were complete misfires, such as one man who seemed more interested in a movie than he was in Mrs. Hot.
This work will likely be encouraging to women who share the author’s age and relationship status. Although Mrs. Hot does promote the benefits of physical beauty, she also maintains that true attractiveness comes from within; throughout the book, she encourages women to release their “Inner Goddess.” She also highlights the power of positive thinking and the importance of loving oneself. She does, however, seem to contradict herself when she says that those who are obese and happy “are simply rationalizing their way to eating whatever they want.” Mrs. Hot’s prose is concise, with many instances of clever wordplay, particularly in chapter subtitles, such as “Taking Delivery of the U.S. Male” or “I Experience Getting Lust in the Stacks.” Indeed, her accounts of sexual encounters are similarly more playful than they are erotic. For instance, she writes that a 27-year-old “nice Italian boy” named Daniele “gave me a full, passionate serving of his native tongue—and I don’t mean a lesson in Italian.” The erotic tales in this book eschew BDSM (“It’s Fifty Shades of Nay, in my opinion”) and occur in places that some readers may feel are sex-fantasy clichés (such as a plane, a movie theater, and a beach). Nevertheless, the author’s dating stories, while a mixed bag, are often delightful—and on more than one occasion, she intriguingly tells of deepening feelings (love, perhaps?) for a man she was seeing."

I don't even know where to start, but this will be long.

I thought this would be a book about one woman's road to self love. Learning to love herself becoming the "goddess" she knew she was.
While I may not agree with her process, this woman did what she needed to do to love herself. And whichever way she got there, I am glad she did.

HOWEVER, this read more like a womans journey through... plastic surgery. She encouraged women “if you can afford them they make all the difference..." and if you can’t most doctors “have a payment plan” or there are “deeply discounted procedures...in Colombia and Thailand .... "
When I read that, I knew this was not the book I thought it would be.

I did not like this book, I did not like the writing, I did not like anything about it.
THAT aside. I found this book to be hypocritical and plain damaging.

It probably did not help that I read this book sandwiched between two amazing books about feminism and equality. New Erotica for Feminists: Satirical Fantasies of Love, Lust, and Equal Pay and The Time Has Come: Why Men Must Join the Gender Equality Revolution
While I think this book was meant to be empowering, for me tearing another woman down is never empowering.

Where to start ...

There were small statements like
"Men are harrier than we are. So the less we have the more attractive we become." and describing shaving as “our cross to bear” .... So if women do not shave we are not attractive? A woman's attractiveness is based on how smooth her pits are? ok...

She encourages women to wear red nail polish, because "THAT is the color men prefer"

When talking about weight she says "A chocolate is always a welcome sensual indulgence on ones bedtime pillow. A toothpick not so much"
So sorry to the ladies who were born with a fast metabolism ... because the implication is you are not desirable in bed.

Referring to an instagram post, by what she calls a “so called feminist” and “feminazi” she says

“She was venting her fury at men in a long tirade of defiant demands. I don’t need to wear lipstick. I don’t need to be thin. I don’t need to grow my hair long. I don’t need to shave my legs...”
she goes on to say that this “sputtering red faced “feminist” was forcing rules on women. Dictating what a feminist is.

If you call someone a "so called feminist" aren’t YOU implying that they are not a feminist, therefore dictating what a feminist is.
She ends the chapter by saying,
"To the feminazi haters for whom not grooming is a political statement. Go ahead feel free not to wash your hair. Feel free also not to get asked out. Just saying."

Nowhere in the authors description of the instagram post does she say anything about not washing her hair ... SO in that rational a woman who does not want to shave. Or grow her hair long is ... what? Unhygienic? Unlovable?

Putting another woman down based solely on her opinions is that feminism?
Bringing down another woman’s self worth? Is that feminism?
Because the implication that another woman should change herself to be “date-able"... all I can say is if THAT is the kind of feminist you are ... then I mean call me a feminazi any day.

The very next chapter she says.
"True feminists: powerful women who make their own choices."

Am I going crazy?

She then says "true feminism is girl power. That means having the freedom to choose to wear makeup or not. To shave your legs or not. To grow a jungle under your armpits or not..."

That is exactly what the woman you JUST criticized said.
She said "I don't need to wear lipstick"
You said "Having the freedom to choose to wear makeup or not"

HOW are those two statements different?
She says I don't need to, you say, you have the freedom to choose... so WHY is she a "so called feminist" and you're a ...? true feminist?
I don't get it.

Moving onto weight
She says

"Obviously self love can extend to loving oneself at any weigh. But I’m not sure I buy all that “happy” fat people believe their own hype. Tho it’s trendy for fat people to shame fat shamers and proclaim how much they live and accept themselves, in fact they’re vibrating the exact opposite since it’s their lack of self loving choices that has made them fat in he first place.

She goes on to say.

"If big is beautiful. Then it follows that diabetes is beautiful. But it’s not. And that dear reader is the elephant in the room for the elephants in the room..."

A little further on she says to "post loving messages to yourself. Like I love myself. I am beautiful. I accept myself unconditionally exactly as I am right now”
I assume she forgot to add in the disclaimer that this is NOT for the “elephants in the room” you guys continue hating yourself. And change. Oh and don't be happy.

This book in my opinion is everything wrong in the world of feminism and equality.
Implying that a woman is not feminine because she has the " Androgynous silhouette of a twelve year old boy" some women were born that way... they are beautiful and feminine and having another women tear them down and make them feel less than they are is the very problem in today's society.

The term "feminazi" to describe a woman who does not feel the need to conform to what society has told them is beautiful, to call another woman an elephant? THAT is not feminism.

The ONLY reason I would ever read this book again, or recommend another human being read this book would be to discuss how this book would negatively impact the fight for equality, kindness to our fellow humans and feminism as a whole.

Attention Sexy Sexagenarians: The Book of Hot blasts tired, old paradigms ("Same old is so, well, same OLD"), and societal, cultural and religious limitations that imprison us and make us depressed and unfulfilled --Mrs.Hot rightly calls them "buzzkills." She shows us how to question and defy them, and be true to ourselves, as she is: not just EXISTING an existence, but LIVING a Life à la Hot. Oh, and there's plenty of sex and laughter, too.

In profoundly wise and often hilarious style, Mrs. Hot reminds us we are here not to EXIST an existence, but to LIVE a life -- as she puts it, an exuberant, fulfilling Life à la Hot. She details how she did it, then shows us how to do it for ourselves, finishing with a series of ribald stories of her adventures with men of all ages that challenge the idea that sexy women can age out of romantic romps. Bad hottitude, indeed.

The Book of Hot is such an inspirational look into an older woman's life. Mrs. Hot is the evolved "Golden Girl"; refusing to let go of having a fun and salacious life even into her 60s. If you're looking for something fun and juicy to read, this is it!

This book also has such a cheeky writing style that will keep you engaged. I was so absorbed by the book, I polished it off in less than two days and it's a pretty massive book! The first half of the book details how you can also go about living a *hot* life, and inspires women of all ages to embrace their inner goddess and how to exude confidence.

In the second half, Mrs. Hot describes all her real life flings and love affairs after her transformation, and they are all hot. From airplane sex, to coy and sexy flirting in a library, to making love in the romantic countryside of Italy, if you are looking for raunchy and shocking reading, look no further! This book really sizzles!

The Book of Hot! is a sexual health, love & romance, sexuality manifesto authored by Mrs. Hot about what women sixty and older can look forward to in regard to their sexual and romantic lives. Penned for "Boomers" it holds some truths and advice for those of us even decades away from that stage can store in our reserves.

The term "inner goddess" conjured up bad memories from Fifty Shades of Grey but beyond all that this is a tale of how Mrs. Hot changed not only her outlook on her love life but she changed careers, changed her lifestyle, transformed her health, improved her looks through diet, exercise and a whole lot of plastic surgery. I'll admit to questioning the avenue through which she achieved this being that she lived on savings in New York City. Overall it is an uplifting feminine, but not in your face feminist, self help book for women. Nice job, Mrs. Hot!

If Mrs Hot feels empowered by all that she does then good for her. Frankly I couldn’t be arsed with the hassle (and expense) of trying to maintain a pristine appearance 24/7. Perhaps when I hit my 60s I’ll feel differently but I very much doubt it. That said, the book is readable and better written than I expected, though I found it a bit repetitive in places. As empowered as Mrs Hot claims to be, one can’t help but observe that the menfolk aren’t pissing about with brandy snifters, corn muffin mix and an extra toothbrush “just in case”. I think I’d rather just stay up here on the shelf to be honest. As for Part Two, there’s only so much sex you can read about. Pretty soon I was just desperate for it to end.

Not what I expected

Mrs. Hot pens an interesting Manifesto, called The Book of Hot. I must admit it wasn't what I thought it was, but I found it more interesting and kept reading it. Basically, life does not end after 60, and it can become more exciting and intense. Mrs. Hot wants the reader to channel their Inner Goddess. She also writes, "Here’s to activating your happiest, healthiest, sexiest you, not just existing, but living your own ever youthful, ever-vibrant Life à la Hot." And then it begins. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but what is written is captivating and thought-provoking. If you're looking for some interestingly "hot" confessions and tales of sexual explorations, then this is that story.

Taking back her life

The book of hot is Mrs Hot’s story of coming of (retirement) age and deciding to reboot her life. From drab to fab and out of a job that she hates, Mrs Hot works to make her life something that she is proud of. It’s her story. It seems to be a great motivational piece for people, especially women, who feel stuck. I’d love to pass this along to my widowed grandmother to read. Mrs Hot’s message would inspire others like my grandmother: “Get out there! Do something!” I think the next book in this series will be interesting (more about her dating life). But this was a fun read and may be the push someone needs to take back the reigns of their life. You go Mrs Hot!

I REALLY LOVED THIS BOOK!!! I'm 64 and this resonated with me completely. I've long wondered why women our age aren't treated as we were when we were younger. It just isn't fair. Now, Mrs.Hot has come to our rescue. First she tells us about her transformation in her later years "from shot to hot," and tells us how to do it, and that's so inspirational to a woman like me who society has thrown under the bus. Then she tells us how to get into the modern dating world, which has really changed since I was coming up in the 70s. Then she tells us about her sexual adventures and those are so hot and fun and full of adventure and fun.

Memoir? This book interested me because it is about a single woman my age. I now understand that “hot” means that she is pursuing a sexual relationship with a man. The first half of the book was about getting her body ready for her quest. The second half was about her conquests. The book contains many details and I enjoyed the description of Santorini in Greece.

What a timely treasure! For the first time since Sex and the Single Girl was written almost six decades ago, Mrs. Hot tells us everything we need to know to MANifest a man. As a Boomer, her advice is aimed primarily at women of her generation, but in fact most of it applies to women of any age. I couldn't put it down. I intend to read again, and this time, take notes!

This book is so inspiring! In The Book of Hot, Mrs. Hot -- Sex in the City's Samantha 2.0 (but now, as she says, that much wiser and juicier ) restores our hope to be sexy and fabulous to the grave. And as her titillating true stories prove, age IS just a number. As Mrs.Hot says, "It ain't over 'til it's over!"

The Book of Hot: A Manifesto
First of all, the author of this book chose to write under the name Mrs. Hot which in itself passes on a lot of strong messages. I particularly like the fact that at some point by just looking at the cover of the book I had some wild expectations of what I was actually going for. Even though I am not a lady, there are a lot of points I can borrow from this amazing well-organized work.
This book has elaborately written pages with a lot of guidelines for women around the age of 60 or thereabout who still hope to find love, romance, and spice up their sexual life. Besides being a book of transformation, it looks at the importance of loving one’s self and the importance of keeping a positive spirit all the time. Anybody can borrow from this point whether old or young.
“The Book of Hot” is well written to entertain the matured reader whether in their early 30s or in their late 60s. I find this book very interesting and useful. It offered me the opportunity to learn some new ideas I previously did not have knowledge about.

I really enjoyed this book. And I was surprised actually how much I liked it. To be honest when I request it I thought is going to be an erotic romance and didn't even read the blurb. So when I started it I read that is not a romance at all but more like a memoirs or even an autobiagraphy. And I don't usually read those kind of books and I thought oh I might leave it for some other time. But then I start reading a bit just to see what is about. And I was really surprised that it actually kept me reading. So later I found out that the books is more of a self help on how to live the live on full tilt without setting any boundaries even when you are a woman in your late 50s as the author said. I loved it to be honest. And I liked how the book was devide into two parts and I must say I liked the second part a bit better ;) and I also liked the writing. I think this book should be read by anyone. It was really motivating. I give it 4 starts.

I received an ARC of this book through #Netgalley in an exchange for an honest review. The thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own, made of my own free will.

It's not often that I read a book of this genre/type but the description made it sound entertaining and something that real women could relate to. Maybe help us in laughing at ourselves or inspire us to make changes in our own lives.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. If another writer had written the story, in a format that flowed more easily, it may have been much more likable. However, this autobiographical writer, made me feel that she was trying to prove something not only with her healthy life changes but with her writing style.

I am an educated woman who enjoys a story or author that uses less commonly used words in a place or two. In fact, it's even fun for me to come across a word in a book, that I have to use my Kindle dictionary on, either for pronunciation or to make sure that I'm understanding it correctly. This book, although I didn't have to use my dictionary much, was very irritating in the author's writing style and had no easy flow to it. I felt as if the writer focused mostly on finding the least commonly used synonym of at least 50% of the words and there was almost never a verb or noun used that wasn't preceded by an adjective or four adjectives.

While I appreciate the author detailing her struggles that many of us have in common, sometimes a woman coming into a shop is just a woman. It doesn't have to be a gorgeous, sophisticated, superbly dressed, middle-aged woman. The story got lost for me in the mess of "big words" and adjectives. Add that to the fact that the word "hot" is grossly overused and printed in red instead of black, it became distracting.

Again, disappointed that a good story was lost in terrible writing style.

You are only as old as you feel!

I must admit, I’m on the fence with Mrs. Hot’s The Book of HOT. As a senior I’m all about not letting a number(age) keep you from living your life at your fullest, but how authentic is it if you feel you need as much cosmetic surgery to get there as the author says she’s had. Not really what the average woman would do, presuming she could even afford it. Part self help, part sexy times. I think each reader will have to decide for themselves if this book is for them.
