Ra the Mighty: Cat Detective #2

The Great Tomb Robbery

Rate this book
A smug royal cat turned detective and his dung beetle sidekick are on the case when a precious tomb gets ransacked in the Valley of the Kings.

Ra the Mighty adores his duties as Pharaoh's cat: naps by the pool and plenty of snacks. Being lazy is so much fun. But when a royal tomb gets robbed, Ra and his hardworking friend Khepri must team up to restore justice. The clues point to a young boy whom Ra admires. Will the Great Detective play favorites, or will he uncover the truth? Mystery awaits!

More than thirty wacky illustrations with fun historical details bring these oddball characters to life, along with a glossary, pronunciation guide, and detailed author's note about ancient Egypt. Fans of Bad Kitty will love Ra's witty voice and arrogant antics. Pair with companion, Ra the Mighty: Cat Detective.

Many times when I’m reading children’s chapter books they feel predictable and boring due to that. This book kept my interest the whole time and mystery was definitely not solved, even for an adult reader, until the end.

Thank you to A.B. Greenfield for sharing Ra the Mighty with Collabookation.
First, I haven't read Ra the Mighty #1, but I plan on changing that asap. However, there wasn't a lot of allusion to the first mystery, so I'm excited to spend more time with Ra, even if it isn't chronologically sound.
Ra is the cat of the Pharoah, and he enjoys that post: the snacks, the grooming, and the resting all suit him well. When he finds himself stuck in the middle of a tomb-robbing mystery, he's eager to prove his sleuthing skills, as long as he can nap along the way. However, things don't go exactly as Ra plans. When he finds himself walking the streets, hungry and smelling like dung, he decides to get to work solving the mystery so he can be returned to the palace asap.
This book is full of interesting Egyptian facts, so if you know any ancient Egypt fanatics, this is a sure bet. But it's also full of humor, mystery, deceit, and friendship. Ra is hilarious, and quite frankly, most kids will appreciate his affinity for snacks and rest. But Ra is also a dedicated cat who wants to see justice served.
Highly recommend to kids in grade 3 and up~ great parent/child read aloud!

Ty razem naszej trójce, czyli kot Faraona o imieniu Ra, skarabeusz Cheprim i kotka Miu przyjdzie zmagać się z kradzieżą drogocennych pamiątek, jakie były w grobowcu. Znaleźli wiele wskazówek m.in. wejście do pewnej komory i teraz muszą zwrócić uwagę ludzi. Tutaj skarabeusz namawia Ra, żeby sprowokował psa i zaczął uciekać przed nim.

Jeżeli wasze pociechy mają duszę detektywistyczną, lubią łamigłówki to tutaj mają wielkie pole do popisu.

This one is a 3.5 for me. After all, combining cats and a mystery set in Egypt leaves little to be desired for those of us who love both. Having read the first book in this series, Ra the Mighty: Cat Detective, I already loved Ra and his self-absorbed, entitled, and pampered ways. Thus, I wasn't surprised when Ra continued to lap up the luxurious life that was his lot. But things quickly get turned upside down when he accompanies the Pharaoh's Vizier on a trip to investigate possible tomb robbing in the town of Set Ma'at where Ra is supposed to have his portrait painted. Through a series of accidents, Ra is left behind his faithful beetle friend, Khepri, and Miu, another cat friend. He also loses his special gold collar, and another cat takes his place. Without his royal trappings, life is hard for Ra, and he is treated as a stray. Ra and his friends decide that the need to figure out who's been ransacking those tombs, but they need to hurry before Sabu, another feline who is top cat in the area, beats them to it. The clues seem to point to Kenamon, the kind young artist who befriends Ra, but Ra is sure that the boy cannot be guilty. Readers will love the ending and Ra's distinct voice and personality, always clamoring for snacks and rest, and be delighted that his royal character was still apparent beneath all that dirt and scruffiness. I loved the story and illustrations equally and will look forward to another mystery for Ra. This one really took him out of his comfort zone, and I'm sure he'll take particular care of his gold collar from here on out.

Ahoy there mateys! This series was recommended to me by the Audible Plus algorithm because of the middle grade I was listening to.  The Pharaoh's cat solving crimes sounded fun and it was.  The series has three books and is read by Ron Butler.  I really enjoyed them but book 2 was the weakest by a little bit.  Ra the Cat has a best friend that is a dung beetle named Khepri.  Khepri is the one that convinces the duo to solve the crime because a servant girl is taking the blame for stealing an amulet.  Of course she is innocent.  The second book involves a tomb robbery and the third book has a missing child.  I love that the books teach children simple Egyptian facts in a fun way.  I love Ra and his pampered attitude.  I really enjoyed the audio narration.  I am glad the robots gave me this one to try. Arrr!

Ra, the Pharaoh’s cat, returns for his second mystery. A trip to the village of Set Ma’at in order to pose for a painting for the Pharaoh’s tomb unveils a tomb robbery. Ra, along with his trusty sidekick the dung beetle Khepri, and Miu the kitchen cat are on the case. Everyone who has worked on the tomb is a suspect. Ra must also escape from a band of jackals that worship the god Anubis and deal with Sabu, the leader of the village cats, who calls Ra “Lord Fancypaws.” As before, Ra stumbles into solving the case with a lot of help from Khepri and Miu. Filled with humor and action, this is a fun mystery series. The pen and ink illustrations bring the characters to life. The author includes an Author’s Note that covers the real facts behind the story, and a list of sources.

As an adult reading this series, I just love it. For your middle grade readers who like mysteries this is a fun series (adults will love too). The cat who belongs to the Pharaoh of Egypt solves crimes along with his dung beetle sidekick! The books are set during the reign of the pharaohs in Egypt, which sets this series apart as we don't see that time period utilized a lot. So you will learn a little about Egyptian culture as you read these books. If you are a cat fan then the spoiled cat, Ra, will keep you chuckling with his inherent cat-ness. I highly recommend!

This was hilarious, clever, adorable, and somewhat educational too! I did not realize that it's the 2nd in a series so we didn't read the first one, but there were no issues catching up. Ra is the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh's cat as well as a wonderful detective who loves snacks and naps and cares about people. His friends and co-detectives are an intelligent and friendly dung beetle named Kepri and another smart cat named Miu. A lot of adventure, laughs, mishaps, and a really heart warming ending. Definitely want to read the rest of this trilogy.

We are really enjoying this detective series! It seems a little odd to have a cat and a dung beetle as main characters but it actually works well. This is one of those books that reads aloud really well and my girls keep begging for another chapter. We are really looking forward to the next book in the series.

In the second installment of Ra the Mighty, Ra and Khepri have another mystery to solve, this time involving the robbery of a tomb! This was similar in storyline and formula to the first one bringing in elements of mystery, Egyptian history, and dung humor haha. My kids and I listened on audio and we enjoyed it!

Read this as a pre-read for my son. Interesting, diverse and comical characters very similar to those in The Very Very Far North. Perfectly paired with an Ancient Egypt history unit with lots of tidbits about that time period, beliefs, practices and etc that kids can use to further explore the topic.

I accidently marked this as read for yesterday. I was anticipating finishing it, but got sidetracked. 😂
This took me longer to read, not for any fault of the book, but because I have it on my tablet and not eReader. I don't interact with my tablet as often, esp for reading fiction books (I keep non-fics on it mostly). That being said, I thought it was a good addition to the series! I wish there were more than one more book with Ra and friends. 🥲 🐈

More Please!!!

A wonderful 2nd book in a series. My daughter and I laughed at Ra's adventures and tried to solve the case ourselves. We hated it when the book ended and can't wait for more from Ra the Mighty, Pharoah 's cat.

Interesting mystery told from a cat's point of view, set in Egypt. Names could be confusing, a little slow moving but lots of "red herrings". Would be a good reading group mystery book. Grades 3-4
