Dungeon Master #3

Dungeon Master 3

What would you do if the ruler of the frozen north land kingdom tried to make one of your faithful minions marry someone else? Would you that happen? Or would you use your dungeon deity powers to dig under his land, invade his castle with your horde of monsters, and warm your soul with the sounds of his dying screams? Come on. It’s the third book. We all know what you would do.

Root of All Evil
Rebel leader Makar takes over the throne in kingdom conquered in the last book.

Boat ride to Tamarisch, land of the bear soldiers and colder climate. And the throne that Annalise’s father sits on.

Crew starts off getting ready for voyage across ocean too continue conquering dungeons in Tamarisch. Stop over on sad island in the perpetual fog—Jallah. Fortune teller that charges a bit of soul. Fancy winter clothing for everyone.

Dungeon with status that come to life. Combat is better described and more detailed. Ice Demons, lots of Ice Demons. Rana runs the gauntlet through the ice-trap reminiscent of laser-sensor traps in many movies. Its pretty well described. Sea monsters on an underground frigid lake with ice bergs. 50 foot tall dungeon god, Master uses new power from previously defeated gods to defeat him easily. Annalise scores a augmentation stone for her sword.

Implausible tunneling between dungeons. The next dungeon is a crystalline white catacomb of porosity. Find three monsters of legend frozen in ice. Of course they come to life / reanimate, and then the minions defeat them. Leads to the dungeon’s masters (Twins), who share the powers of control over monsters, and the ability to take monsters forms onto themselves. Rana gets a force ring.

Master, Carmedy and Rana go to town. The town, towns people, shops, and general environment are vividly described. The Steaming Spring Inn had some cool ideas in its architecture.

Tunnel to another dungeon. Weather control by the dungeon god, who is a god that Master had sparred with in his previous life. He is victorious again, using a couple of his powers against him. Best battle with an enemy god so far. Morrigon gets a magic elfish bow. Rana gets another sacred object.

Master teleports back to his dungeon to fight off attackers sent by Tuzakeur.

I do appreciate that as the story develops and the minions gain wealth and power, they definitely stop and smell the roses from time to time.

The Evil Wizard Tuzakeur starts to take a more central roll. He is apparently behind everything bad in the world, not just Rana’s family being held hostage, but also is corrupting Annalise’s father, and also attacking Master’s home dungeon.

Annalise’s father has to be slain for someone else to become ruler, will it be Annalise or Master that has the honors. There is a siege, and they win by sneaking in underground, with lots and lots of ice demons and other creatures that Master can create or summon in seemingly unlimited quantities. Annalise does fight and best her father, decent battle.

Ends with dancing wedding ceremony. Somehow killing her father resolved all of her concerns about Master.

Another good book in the series

I chose four stars because the plot moved well, no gaps, and the characters were well written. It would be nice to see things from the female characters perspective once in a while though. I normally reserve 5 stars for books written this well that are also emotionally evocative. So while this was a well written story, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, it did not have that effect for me.

Just Rewards

Battles fought and won with purpose is a waste, but battles with purpose are fought with honor. God's fight with gods, but here amongst those battles, human fights especially between a father whose a High King and a daughter trying to prove herself in her father's eyes can make or break a kingdom.
This was quite enjoyable and I am looking forward to seeing where this is going.

I love the direction this series is going, and it's good to see Mr. Vall improving as he releases more books. This is -by far- the best book in this series. If you read the first two and were kinda 'meh' on the series, I'd recommend giving this one a try and see if it brings you around. It's a 110% improvement.

A very good book.

I enjoy reading this series. The author has done a good job of just giving a few more hints each book about the fallen god. The characters continue to be entertaining and engaging in the story. The MC is very powerful and fun to read about. Overall another good book.

Dungeon Master gets even better

Really enjoyed this book, I think it was the best in the series so far, the relationships between the main characters is expanded and strengthened while a few more clues of the ‘Dark Ones’ history is revealed (and his first real challenge in battle).

A big improvement over the previous 2 as there now actually seems to be a little bit more of a plot. My biggest gripe is that they have still only come across 1 goddess, their first, and there was barely any battle at all.

Great Fun

This book in the series is set with a calmer and more sedate story and pace - until the end, that is. Still true to the characters and storyline, still full of action, humor, passion, magic, and mystery. Well worth reading!

Great book

They are just so much fun to read. The way that the main characters interact together is just great. You never know what they’re gonna say or do next. At times it is so funny and others lots of action. I highly recommend this book.

A good, but not great story

This 3rd book was a little too easy for the main characters, with few real challenges. Hopefully the 4th book restores the series.
