This is a really excellent book. I've read a number of books on ancient economic history and for an introduction, I would recommend this book strongly. It provides not only a good overview, without getting lost in the details, but original texts so you can see what the ancient authors wrote without having to rely upon someone interpreting the text for you. A great starting point.
