A fun, entertaining, witchy cosy read that is the prequel to the author's new "The Witches of Wormwood" series. The prequel introduces us to the main character Hazel Salem, a young woman who couldn't wait to leave the weird little community when she started college.
"I'd always known that Wormwood liked to keep it's folklore fresh. Witches, magicians, fortunetellers, and psychics exploded out of the woodwork here."
She returns to her home after her mother dies and finds herself running the family Apothecary. While cleaning one day she comes across a mystery that must be solved, as well as taking on two orphan black kittens left on her doorstep.
I've only recently discovered author Ruby Loren and as such I'm not really a "witchy" reader but this tale drew me in completely with the character Hazel, who doesn't believe in anything mystical , and the inhabitants of the town, most of them being single mothers with zipped lips about the male parentage of their children. The ending of this fabulous tale was just perfect with a surprising and snarky revelation. Yes, I'm definitely going to love the little character of Hemlock.
And while not necessarily normally interested in cosies that contain recipes, I must mention there's a corker of a recipe for a flourless lemon cake included, the first such recipe I'm actually going to try. An altogether awesome introduction to this author's work and one I'll definitely be following to read more adventures of Hazel, Hemlock and the eclectic people of Wormwood.
I received a ecopy of this novella directly from the author. I have voluntarily chosen to review this book and the gifting in no way influences my review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion.
Hazel the Writing With of Wormwood Short Story Prequel to the series, worth it for fans of the series as it’s only 99¢ at the kindle store and all profits go to charity

"You can't go home again," orated Thomas Wolfe. If this were a literary novel, the protagonist would return home and take up the family legacy. If horror, the protagonist would return to his/her hometown and confront the Ancient Evil. Well, it's neither: instead this is another delightful relaxing cosy mystery from prolific author Ruby Loren, and the prequel to the WITCHES OF WORMWOOD Series. Snarky and stubborn, Hazel Salem is the last scion of the family: the last of the family period. She only returns to Wormwood because her mother passed and bequeathed Hazel the family house and apothecary business. So here she is, astounded that her mother was ailing, amazed at how little income the apothecary has yielded, and wondering why on Earth she returned to this odd town. She doesn't believe in magic, witchcraft, or black cats. But that doesn't mean none of those disbelieve in her. Ride along for a delightful shift in perception and an intriguing mystery in this lovely little magical community.
Wormwood is a weird place. Filled with witches and black cats. Really? Yes, really. It is not a typical fantasy, but set in a small village somewhere in 21th century Britain. Maybe that explains it... 😉 Really nice story! I'm looking forward to reading more! I received a copy and chose to review it.
A satisfying read that kept me reading until it was done. Hazel Salem returns to Wormwood after her Mom passes. Not her choice but since her choices are limited she decides to honor her Mom's request to keep the family apothecary in business. There she finds clues to an old mystery and the book is off. Fun and funny this short book is a complete story that sets up what looks to be a good series. Hazel has flaws and strengths as do the other characters in the book. And it has kittens. And all the profits go to a Cat Rescue. I'm looking forward to next book.
My only complaint about this book is it ended too soon. I wanted more!! I love stories with familiars in them. I want one! How great would that be? I had to giggle when she thought she would just find homes for the 2 kittens she found on her doorstep. Wormwood sounds like an interesting little town. It certainly has some colorful characters. It’s interesting that sometimes life has twists and turns that are unexpected. I hope I can read more about Hazel, Hemlock and Hedge. I received a copy of this book. My opinion is my own.
Talking Black Cats and hidden treasure, secrets and mysteries. Coming home again can open a can of worms. Even gluten free lemon cake with added “extras”. Minor editing errors. Interesting teaser for series to follow.
This is another great book by Ruby Loren. If you have read any of her books in this series? You all ready know just how good they are. This is a prequel book to her new mystery series. The Witches of Wormwood. It'sreally tough to go back home, especially if your home is Wormwood, where every one is a witch, black cats and all. It's really tough when you just find out your mother justpassed on. The people in this town ate not friendly and your cat has a nastyattitude to boot. But home she is and Hazel finds a mystery right of way. Then she finds out just how vindictive the people really are,but then she decides to write her magazine any way and for spite put the lemon cake recipe in it anyway. That day her Mean friend came in and in her nasty way made a truce with her. Hemlock told her she should have took revenge on her anyway. A very good read,so Pick one up today. Debra H.
Hemlock and Hedge #1 - A different approach to starting life as a witch after the death of her mother sets up the foundation in this introductory prequel. Basic development of characters but since this is a series, Ms. Loren will be having plenty of character growth as the series progresses. Interesting storylines, which of course will develop more, too.
Again there's an interesting animal involved; the familiar is a hoot with intelligence. Working together although unbeknownst to Hazel, she and Aziraphale solve the mystery. Aziraphale's secret comes out along with other secrets. There's good suspense and intrigue, and the thought process used to solve the mystery is good, but Ms. Loren writes more substantial plots than the usual cozy genre. I contacted the author to review her books. 4*
DARK HORSE SERIES: Standalones, but a well written series! If you love Sooky, you'll love this series. Each book gets better, as do the characters and the plots are suspense-filled, intriguing and action-packed.
Death's Reckless Reaper, Prequel - An introduction to January. I'm glad I read Death's Dark Horse first, since the anticipation of discovering what her other form was well fed by the delay in revealing the truth. This little story starts with her move to Paris and her experiences with her first vampire marked for death and a twist. Read after Death's Dark Horse is my recommendation, if at all. The author said she was going to rewrite Reaper and make it 1.5 instead of a prequel. 5*
Death's Dark Horse #1 - A well written, suspense filled story with a unique and surprising character and many other interesting characters, along with humor thorough out the story. The plot is well thought out and the reader is kept guessing as to what is so specially about the main character: her job is surprising and you may guess at her animal. I guessed it but put it out of my mind and surprise I was right. I've read many of Ms. Loren's books and she gets better with each new book. 5*
Death's Hexed Hobnobs #2 - The story takes place a year after Death's Dark Horse ends. This book is amazing! I felt like I was reading a Butcher novel. This well written, action paced, suspense filled novel kept me prisoner to its pages. The plot twisted like an angry rodeo bull and the suspense never stopped, along with humor thorough out the story . The characters, while well thought out in DDH, become stronger and evoke all sorts of emotions from the reader. I can't wait to see what #3 is has in stock for the reader.5*
Death's Endless Enchanter #3 - This book starts right where Death's Hexed Hobnobs ended. Well written, filled with suspense and intrigue, humor and well developed characters with realistic dialog - (not stupid dialog). Although the book concludes the issues that arise in this book, it's a cliffhanger and the book doesn't end the way the reader would expect. 5*
Death's Ethereal Enemy #4 - This book starts a month after Death's Endless Enchanter ended. Well written, intriguing with the suspense starting later in the chapters than usual, but making up for the delay. Still with humor, but some darkness appearing and new revelations as the plot twists and the pace picks up. 5*
Death’s Last Laugh #5 – This is a whooper! There’s a lot happening in this book: action; intrigue; suspense; romance; and humor. Another well-written story that keeps the reader immersed in the pages, and too soon, the end is reached. This very substantial book with it’s well thought out twists and turns, along with the continuous growth of the characters makes it hard to put the book down. So ease up with the tea. I’m so glad I contacted the author to review her books. She hasn’t disappointed me yet and she has traveled a long was from Larch Hall. 5* Dark Horse Series end.

Hazel has relented and returned to her childhood town of Wormwood. Not in the best circumstances either, her mother has passed away and in her will it was stipulated that her local store remain open, and Hazel run it. Hazel knows that it was mostly guilt that forced her into this situation, but it's too late to worry about about that now. After finding a map, an envelope containing some strange stuff, and a 27 year old mystery, Hazel has been thrown into the deep end. She's now on the trail of a 27 year old question, who made the Lemon Cake? Was it her mother? Or someone else who had entered the competition so long ago? Talk about a baptism by fire, Hazel will come to discover a few home truths about Wormwood as well as herself and her new found kittens. Maybe Wormwood is just the place for her after all.
Oh I enjoyed this short so much!!!!!!!!! I feel that it was the PERFECT introduction to Hazel and Wormwood, I've added the remainder of the series to my TBR list and plan on purchasing them all as soon as I whittle said list down a bit.
I would put this story a cosy paranormal mystery, which I have a massive soft spot for. Something about cosy mysteries is just so....comforting, that's the whole point, hey? haha. Throw in a twist of the paranormal and it's a surefire way to get me interested. This one did not disappoint. Loren was able to endear Hazel, Hemlock and Hedge to me the instant they were all introduced. The story was fast paced, but didn't FEEL like a short story, which I feel is a testament to Loren's ability in her craft. The mystery itself was incredibly well thought out and executed wonderfully. The writing was great and this was just all around an awesome read for me. It's very rare that a short story will receive a 5 star review from me, but there was just something about this one that made me fall in love with it....is it witchcraft? ;)
This is a prequel to the Witches of Wormwood series. It introduces you to Hazel Salem, who has returned to her home town, after her mother passed away. She is trying to keep her mother’s shop running, in a town full of strange characters, such as witches, fortune tellers and others. Even her own mother was a witch, but Hazel doesn’t believe in any of that sort of nonsense.
She is left a surprise by her front door, the door of her mother’s shop, and finds two black cats. She names them as the title shows, Hemlock and Hedge. She doesn’t even want a black cat, there are enough of them already in town! Add in the poisoning of someone important by cake and the ingredients leading back to Hazel’s shop and she finds herself trying to solve what has happened.
Add in the old school enemies, now grown up and in charge of the local witches coven and she has enough worries on her plate. She finds something her mother has left hidden, relating to an unsolved mystery, and realises she can’t ignore her family heritage anymore. There are others in the town that don’t want the secret to come out and shenanigans commence! A great short read and introduction to the new series, by this author, with all profits going to a cat rescue and sanctuary. Even if you aren’t a cat lover, you need to read this for the story and the enjoyment of the interactions between Hazel and her cats! Plus you get a recipe for the cake mentioned in the story, minus the deadly ingredients.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above. I have also bought the book, although I am not a cat lover, for the sheer joy of reading another fantastic tail (yes, it was deliberate!) from the author.
This is a fantastic start to what promises to be a great series. I was looking forward to this introduction to the new characters as I had thoroughly enjoyed this author's previous series, the Madigan Amos mysteries, and I was not disappointed. My favourite character just has to be Hemlock, the little kitten. I am really looking forward to seeing what mischief he gets up to in future stories.
Hazel inherits the family's pharmacy when her mother passes. Due to the guilt she feels about not staying in closer contact with her mother, she meets with the lawyer and signs the paperwork for the pharmacy, agreeing to some unusual conditions that her mother has stipulated, without giving it much thought. What was her mother's wish? To continue with her training as a witch of course...!
This is a perfect series for fans of cosy paranormal mysteries, with a hint of magic added into the mix. I cannot recommend this author highly enough. I have read many of Ruby's books to date and have enjoyed every one of them. The enjoyment factor and the quality of the stories have always been consistently high.
Another bonus of purchasing this introductory book, is that all profits raised will be donated to Honeycat Rescue and Sanctuary, a no kill, no profit rescue service which aims to help as many vulnerable cats and kittens as possible.
So what are you waiting for? Buy your copy, sit back and enjoy reading this introduction to a new series of cosy reads with the knowledge you are helping some unfortunate cats and kittens, at the same time. I received this book as an ARC from the author, and have voluntarily written this review
Any book in any of Ruby Loren's series will never disappoint! This prequel to a new series will having you craving more. Hazel Salem's mother's dying wish is that Hazel returns to her quirky hometown of Wormwood, where the paranormal exists, and to continue to run her mother's apothecary shop and to continue her witch training. Just because her mother thought she was a witch, doesn't mean she really was one ...BUT Hazel agrees, because it was her mother's dying wishes and she had nothing better to do anyway. When she finds two black cats on her shop doorstep, she takes them in and ends up adopting them. One cat is rambunctious and the other is very quiet and shy. The rambunctious cat she names Aziraphale and the quiet one Crowley. While cleaning and placing jars on a tall shelf a yellowed paper maked with an X falls down and when she checks it out, she finds her curiosity piqued. She follows the map and she finds and envelope with the strangest clues to "something" and a lemon cake recipe together with a cryptic message. And so the adventure begins. Can an old death actually have been a murder? Why does Aziraphale keep showing up and helping in a way when Hazel could have been hurt or worse? Strange. The ending is even stranger so you are going to love this series as much as I do already! Lots of humor and a very snarky cat! I can't wait to see what will happen next! I received and ARC from the author, but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Poor Hazel Salem, she comes from a long line of witches, but is a disappointment to the family as she doesn’t seem to have the power herself. It doesn’t really matter to her as she doesn’t believe in magic and all that hocus-pocus stuff. She has just inherited her mother’s estate and discovers she must take over her mom’s apothecary shop.
As she is finding her way around the shop and trying to make it her own, two black kittens arrive at her door. She soon discovers that one (Hemlock) is her familiar and can talk to her; the other (Hedge) appears to be just an average cat. When a mystery of the paternal kind falls at her feet, Hazel finds herself immersed in finding the truth.
This is a short story (prequel) to a new paranormal series. It is a great introduction to the new series and you get to learn a lot about all the Wormwood townsfolk. The story is written with wit, lots of flair, and a ton of interesting characters. I can’t wait to find out what happens with Hazel and her witchy discovery.
This is basically a prequel to a really good series about a young women (Hazel) who takes over a shop that sells witch/New Age types of things. She's supposed to be a witch but so far she has nothing to indicate that she has any significant powers. The ends up with two cats in the store, Hemlock and Hedge.
Hemlock can actually talk to her and she understands him. He claims to be her familiar although as far as familiars go he has a bit of an attitude problem. Hedge, on the other hand, never speaks at all. She learns that not that terribly long ago the mayor of the town was poisoned.
She decides to start a monthly magazine for the town and titles it Tales from Wormwood and this ends up leading her into investigating various bad things that happen including murders. In this instance she needs to find out if the mayor was poisoned on purpose, who did it and why did they do it. It all makes good fodder to her new town news magazine.
I really like her character. Hemlock's a little snarky for my taste.
Great start to a new series! Hazel's mother has passed away and left everything to Hazel. Without reading any of the paperwork Hazel signs the papers. Then she finds out she must move back home and keep her mother's apothecary shop open. She also finds out she must keep up with her witch training. Hazel has never believed she was a witch as she has no powers. Looking through her supply of herbs she comes across a card and a piece of paper with a message. HE'S THE FATHER. Whose father? Hers? It's a mystery she must solve. Someone had also left a cardbox with 2 black cats in it on her door step. Imagine her surprise when one of the cats starts talking to her. An enjoyable read with a mystery to solve. Well written. I'm looking forward to the next book. I voluntarily received a copy of this book and I'm voluntarily posting a review. My opinion is entirely my own. I have also purchased this book. All of the profits are going to Honeycat Rescue & Sanctuary.
This short prequel to the Witches of Wormwood series is great little appetizer for the mind. Miss Hazel Salem, having recently returned (somewhat unwillingly) to her childhood home of Wormwood, has several things fall at her feet. The running of her late mother's barely-solvent apothecary shop... an envelope containing what appears to be a yellowed treasure map... a mystery involving the paternity of some old classmates - or perhaps her own?... and two anonymous black kittens in need of a home. (Hazel's attempt to name the kittens Crowley and Aziraphale was the instant I knew I was hooked.) This is a quick read and offers some resolution to the mystery of the moment, but raises many more questions about Hazel the reluctant witch, the town of Wormwood, and... magic! In summary, this prequel has fulfilled its intended purpose, whetting my appetite for the rest of the series (figuratively as well as literally - the included recipe for flourless lemon cake looks amazing!)
"This should be a piece of cake." Hazel Salem, wannabe journalist, returns home to the South Easterly English village of Wormwood, after the death of her mother. In the will, Hazel received not only the house but also a musty shop, the Salem Apothecary, which she'd unknowingly agreed to keep open in the signing. Two tiny black kittens appear on her doorstep and a note, found when she's trying to update the store, opens up a minor mystery and insight into some of the other village inhabitants
Hemlock and Hedge, is a short, lighthearted prequel to a cozy series. It is simply written, very easy to read, without much plot or character development but does introduce the reader to the main protagonists, the background story and the village setting. And also included is a delicious sounding recipe for an easy cook gluten free lemon cake. The series to follow could well be a fun YA cozy read both for cat lovers and those with a taste for a spot of witchery and humour.
This prequel short story is a fun start to a promising new series!
Hazel has inherited her mother’s shop and thus moves back to Wormwood. Her mother believed she was a witch, but Hazel is having none of it. When two black kittens show up on her doorstep, she’s NOT going to keep them. No. Um… Not even a day and the kittens have Hazel wrapped around their little paws. And there’s a 27 year old mini-mystery to whet your appetite for this new series.
I loved it. Couldn’t fault it. I liked the dry humour. A good start with enough background mixed with things happening. I was drawn in, into the woods! I thought it was exciting.
OK, one tiny thing then: the main character’s name was mentioned for the first time at over half of the book. All that time I was like ‘what was her name again?’ Because of course I read the blurb when I bought this book, but I couldn’t remember it. Let someone say it in the first chapter: problem solved.
What would you do if your cat suddenly talked to you? Hazel Salem lives in Wormwood and does not believe in magic and does not think she is a witch. She finds a piece of paper which turns out to be a map. She follows the map and finds an envelope. One of the things in the envelope has a date on it. She goes to the library and finds out that someone was poisoned on that date by a cake. She also has a recipe in her mother's handwriting for that kind of cake. But, for the recipe to be hidden she believes blackmail may be part of the story.
She finds two black kittens on her doorstep one day and names them. Then one day, Hemlock talks to her and tells her his name is Hemlock and Hedge is the other cat. Hemlock is her familiar. Which is strange because she does not believe that she is one. This book is a prequel to a series. I have ordered the next one so I can find out more of the story.

This book introduces you to Hazel Salem who just inherited her mother's shop in Wormwood.
With "Hemlock and Hedge", Ruby Loren presents us with the prequel to the series "The Witches of Wormwood". This prequel is a bookish appetiser for the series, telling how Hazel solves an old mystery. The story is nicely elaborated, comprises interesting turns and fun elements, a delicious recipe, and has a good flow. Ruby Loren introduces each character with care, providing them with sufficient depth for their respective relevance. I was drawn into the story right away - as Hazel's invisible friend. I could easily envision the characters and locations - with odd clarity. I had a great time reading "Hemlock and Hedge". I am looking forward to continuing the series.
This is for you if you like paranormal mysteries, cats, likeable and unusual characters, surprises, and good storytelling.
Hazel has moved back to her hometown after her mother's death. Not realizing what she was signing up for, she is thrown into the world of witches, black cats and covens. Did I also mention secrets? Yep! The first secret is a dozy....HE'S THE FATHER...a mysterious note found in a tree. It is up to Hazel to put together the pieces.
This series prequel shows that there is lots of great potential for the series and I am excited to see where this picks up, as Hazel struggles to fit in. The character and world introduction are nice and smooth, as well as the first story plot. I enjoyed the cozy and fun characters, especially Hemlock. Who doesn't love a town stuck in a time warp and tons of mystical magic.
So if you are looking for great cozy fun, then this series is for you.
Hazel Salem finds herself in her hometown of Wormwood after the death of her mother - who had but one request: that Hazel keep the family Apothecary in business.
Sorting through her stock of herbs one day, a mystery literally falls to her feet - a card with a note asserting that HE IS THE FATHER.
Whether a reference to her own sire, or the father of someone else, is not immediately clear. As she says, single mothers are quite common in Wormwood - and the town supports the mothers and children.
Solving the mystery leads her into her own past, and that of a few former classmates. Not knowing her own sire, perhaps avoiding romance with a local is indeed in her best romantic interests in the future.
I really enjoyed this book. A young woman returns to her hometown to take over her family’s pharmacy upon her mother’s death. While struggling to keep the business, she starts to sort through what remains of her mother’s things and finds an old recipe and a cryptic note. A mystery to solve, and did I mention the town is known to be inhabited by witches?
I have read several of the author’s books about Madigan Amos, the zookeeper, and enjoyed the characters so much I was delighted to start on a new series with the author. I recommend you pick this one up if you like strong, intelligent females and enjoy a little magic...
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, and I gave an honest review.
The author writes prequels to each of her new series, and this one introduces a series about a young woman who returns to a rather paranormally centered town to take over her mother's apothecary shop. This prequel is the best that she has written. The characters are great (with some wonderful names) and the story is interesting, humorous and very well written. I especially liked the interactions with her adopted cat, especially as it can talk! I am really looking forward to the rest of the series which shows great promise. I love all of the author's series, but this one could be the one of the best yet. Oh, and as an added bonus all the proceeds from this book are being donated to a no kill cat rescue sanctuary, so everyone wins!
I really enjoyed the Madigan Amos series, so when I was offered an ARC copy of this title, I didn't hesitate.
Even though it's a short book, I felt invested in Hazel's story. She has a very wry sense of humor, as does her cat, so I'm imagining some fun exchanges in the future. I can see myself reading this series, as it's cute and quirky, a perfect cozy mystery. I'm a cat lover, too, so it's win-win for me.
I didn't give it five stars because there were a few times when Hazel could have asked more questions, such as at the end of her interview with the former mayor. I also found myself frequently annoyed by the improper use of commas...a problem in Loren's other books. It's quite distracting at times.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As a prequel for a new series, this story is very close to flawless. As soon as the story began, I was drawn to the main character (who is quite likeable) and her newly changed circumstances. In a very organic way, introductions to other characters were made and connections formed which will, no doubt, pave the way for future plots.
Hemlock and Hedge is a cosy! And an absolutely quintessential cosy, at that. Just as hard-boiled spy stories are not for me, this story will not suit everyone. Which is a shame, because there is some very fine writing interwoven with gentle humour that whisks you away to entertain and delight for a quick, lovely read.
I cannot wait to read the next instalment of the series.
This is a great introduction to a new series about witches.
There was not so much action but rather a setting of the scene, and the introduction of the characters we will no doubt meet frequently in the series proper.
The heroine, Hazel, doesn't believe in witchcraft, which is a tad problematic when she's not only moved back to Wormwood, but has also taken over the running of her late mother's shop.
Her first puzzle is finding out who was responsible for a poisoning some years ago.
Easily solved for once, with a bit of research...and the help of Hemlock, a talking cat....
He is my favourite character and I would rate him best talking cat since Salem in the TV series "Sabrina, Teenage Witch".
This is a prequel short story to introduce a series. It has captured my interest and I will read more of the series when it comes out. Our main character's Mother has passed away bringing her back to her hometown of Wormwood. This town is a kitschy place full of fortune tellers, witches, etc. Our heroine finds a "treasure" map from her late Mother that leads her on a hunt for answers. Along the way she finds kittens on her doorstep which add some humor and fun. Not surprisingly, one of the kittens turns out to be her familiar. I kept waiting for the kitten to talk and I wasn't disappointed. The conversation between Hazel and the kitten was hilarious. I'm looking forward to learning more of the characters and seeing where the story will go from here.
