Eric Carle was an American author, designer and illustrator of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published in 1969, has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Carle's career as an illustrator and children's book author accelerated after he collaborated on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?. Carle illustrated more than 70 books, most of which he also wrote, and more than 145 million copies of his books have been sold around the world. In 2003, the American Library Association awarded Carle the biennial Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal (now called the Children's Literature Legacy Award), a prize for writers or illustrators of children's books published in the U.S. who have made lasting contributions to the field. Carle was also a U.S. nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010.
This book is lovely. Of course its for fans of very hungry caterpillar :) , but also for children who don't know it. The book can be an introduction to the very hungry caterpillar, and may make children want to read it. I like it :) / Great book for children. In the book, in various places, there are hidden animals or insects that go to sleep. For example: in the grass, or in a tree. The very hungry, sleepy caterpillar is there too. I think this book is perfect for putting a baby to sleep. I almost fell asleep while reading it for myself to review
Maeve enjoyed trying to open all the flaps :-) Still trying to get the hang of opening books with flaps but she managed to do a few pages on her own after reading it a few times over!
This very short, brightly colored board book is especially intended for fans of the very hungry caterpillar. Each page ends by asking what's hiding on the following page. There's a flap to lift that will reveal Eric Carle characters hiding in the grass, in a tree, in the water, in a barn, or in a sunflower.

As the board book is opened you’re greeted with the sun going down; on the adjoining page you discover a familiar creature under the first flap, the cricket from The Very Quiet Cricket. More insects and animals from Eric Carle’s books will surprise the reader as they lift each flap, making each discovery a fun guessing game. On each page the hungry caterpillar can be seeing making his way through the grass and reeds until he reaches his resting place for the night.
Like all Eric Carle books we are treated to a visual explosion of colour and whimsical illustrations that delight the senses. The language is simple and tells a beautiful story about the hungry caterpillar heading to his bed upon some leaves, while saying goodnight to his friends along the way.
This book is warm, inviting and engaging and is perfect to share with your baby or toddler as they go down to bed for the night.
Let it be clear that the Very Hungry Caterpillar is a hidden object on each page....it is NOT another hungry caterpillar tale. But I do love lift the flaps. I will enjoy seeing Audrey become more dexterous and lifting the flaps herself one day.
It's not very original though. There is no story. Just various characters saying goodnight!
A literal bedtime story. Short but easy read. It reminds me of an episode of Peppa Pig where Daddy Pig told Peppa and George a bedtime story because they can't sleep. The illustrations are cute. A nice read for young kids.
Miss 3 LOVES reading 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. She hasn't taken to this in the same way but we both definitely enjoyed reading it and saying goodnight to the animals (although she pointed out that doesn't apply to the owls because they are awake). The artwork is beautiful as one expects in an Eric Carle book.
Eric Carle's illustrations are what truly make this book. Even as an adult, I could stare at his pictures with the vibrant colors and textures. This book also features flaps for kids to flip open and see what animal to say good night to on each page. This book is a good length to start out with when babies are very young to start them on a bedtime routine.
Tiny one loves the taste of the pages. I enjoy the activities it has and how it engages her. Though the plot could use some cornstarch to thicken it up.
A cute wee story with different characters to find asleep under the flaps, a lovely book to read along with the main book and my wee boy loves looking for the sleepy character
