One reckless move could cost her everything…

It used to be easy to pass as human beat cop Essie Shaw. Lay low, don’t draw too much attention. Now I’m hiding in plain sight, working for the JP, praying my teammates won’t notice my non-human magical quirks and figure out I’m a nephilim.

As the magic clawing within me threatens to reveal me, my complicated emotional bond with the team grows: Gideon, whose cold, professional distance cuts me; Jacob, whose mixed messages confuse me; Kol, whose friendship warms me; and Marcus, whose wolf could turn on me.

Thanks to the messy public disasters we’ve barely survived, the Head Office sends in the big guns: Cassius, who’d love nothing more than to rip his brother Gideon’s mating brand from my arm and kick me off the team.

So, no pressure in cracking a ring of vicious magical drug smugglers. But when things go sideways, my magic threatens to expose my secret and cost me the only place where I’ve ever belonged. With the men my very bones tell me are mine.

Destined Fire is the third book in the Nephilim’s Destiny series, an action-packed full-length paranormal romance with four irresistible guys and a kick-ass heroine who doesn’t have to choose.

So I’m actually loving this series and for the life of me I don’t know whyyyyy I’m so drawn to it.

Firstly, there’s a lot of repetition.
Repetition with Essie and her inner dialogues.
We get it sis, you wanna be on the team.
Yes, we know it’ll be difficult with your big secret.
Mhmm.
Yeah.
Yup.
Got it.
Yeah.
(Imagine a phone conversation where one person is just agreeing and not really saying anything, that’s us right now).

WE GET IT, ESSIE. KOL HAS A PANTY MELTING SMILE.

Can we please start using other words to describe Kol’s smile?
Leg-spreading?
Vagina-clenching?
Pussy throbbing?
Brilliant?

Idk, just something different. Damn.
Anything but panty melting.

We’ve seen it enough.

So anyway.
Did anyone else think Zip sounded a lot like Molly?
Lolol. If that was supposed to be parallelism, I gotchu boo. I understood, Tessa. There’s some resemblance there.

Always be careful everyone. Get you a trip advisor.
^^^that is not me condoning anything.
*slaps hands together*
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Funny enough, Essie solidifies her bonds with:
Jacob.
Gideon.
And almost nearly Kol.

It only took three books so THINGS SHALL MOVE QUICKLY NOW NO?
No. Not with Bane, anyway.
Is there room for him?

Also idk who shoved that giant pole up Cassius’s ass but take it out.

Our girl Essie sprouts wings at the end, tada.
Now onto book four to see how strong those dang bonds really are.
Who said relationships were boring? Pfft.

Good

The repeated waffling about “oh im a weak human, blah blah blah” grated on the nerves. Because she knows shes not human. At a certain point, three books in, just get over it and find a new source of angst. Not revealing her powers or fear of being discovered and killed was more interesting of a motivation that got sidelined in all the wussy “ im weak and a liability and ill get them killed” whining.

Okay, Destined Fire was probably my favorite one so far! So many important things happened in regard to Essie and her nephilim thing and with the romance :D

I loved loved loved the relationship development between her and Jacob and Marcus. I really wasn't expecting one of the big twists regarding that and it was such a treat to have that thrown in with the plot. Gideon's side was a bit... abrupt, like with Marcus changing his mind back in the previous book, but I wasn't all that made about it. It was such a good set up for the final leg in the series! I'm so curious about what's to come.

The plot in general re the investigation and the mission was also tighter and better executed. The introduction if a pretty big new angel character was also great and I liked how much tension it added to the story. Especially with that ending!!! I just hope Kol is okay ;-;

Finally!

This book had a whole lot of "about time" relief in it. Both Jacob and Gideon made me happy. Gideon is a romantic. Seriously. I get why he behaved the way he did now even though he was hurting the both of them. That ending, though! Waiting for February is going to suck.

4.5 - ku. Awesome series!

Book 3 took the events of the first 2 and slammed it into overdrive! Not only is Essie still struggling to contain her ever growing powers while still hiding her heritage, she is bouncing along the threads of emotional and spiritual bonds the likes angels literally sing about.

Pros:
- well written
- completely new concepts on familiar themes
- Essie, she’s awesome
- Building plot crescendo

Cons:
- a few minor editing issues, did not detract
- Book 4 release date not set (at this writing) - can you tell I’m impatient??? 😂🤷‍♀️

The same formula from books 1 and 2 is getting a little old. I’d like the fast paced action to slow down. A little more relationship building and training for Essie would be good, they keep throwing her into the deep end and expecting her know what to do!
The same themes are being repeated, “I’m a monster” “he won’t want me once he finds out”

”My buzz eased, but the grating tension grew. This was going to be a problem if we didn’t get this solved soon.”

“One day. That was all I wanted. One day where I wasn’t hurt and my buzz was manageable. Was that too much to ask for?”

She keeps getting increasingly more hurt and in pain but never gets any time to recover. I don’t understand how she’s still standing. This “buzz” is buzzing me now

But it’s still 4star and exciting. That cliffhanger has me downloading book 4 straight away! I’d just like a change of pace now. Maybe it’s the binge talking

Shout out to the unsung hero Amiah the healer girl you need a holiday. For reals

ORIGINAL POST
So much of this was just more of the same repeated internal dilemmas from the previous books, so it felt like nothing new was happening. Even though some things changed, I didn't really feel like the story was making progress until the huge cliffhanger at the end, which was pretty frustrating. Full review to come.

UPDATE
A few observations from my Kindle notes:
1. I thought the dream at the beginning of this book was pretty tedious.

2. I disliked how invested Essie seemed in what Amiah thought about her. Amiah has no authority here; she’s irrelevant.

3. It started to seem as if her relationship with Marcus was based solely in sex. They didn’t really just talk or hang out. I know they’re busy with important stuff, but still.

4. Omg, I wanted to scream when I realized Essie was continuing that same godawful internal debate about whether the stay with the team. MOVE ON ALREADY!

5. The writing continued to have some issues, including some sentences that just didn’t really make sense:

(a) “those who didn’t care about — or had no other choice to —live without power or running water took shelter in the abandoned buildings.” That phrase essentially says “those who didn’t care about live without power or running water,” which makes no sense.
(b) “I didn’t bother securing him with a zip tie. He didn’t have any magic to suppress, and if I didn’t secure him to something, he’d just be able to run away or rejoin the fight.” ??? So you’re going to leave him free to rejoin the fight so that he won’t be free to rejoin the fight?

6. Either Essie was stupid or the author couldn’t remember her past books. Essie talks about how she doesn’t know whether angels believe in monogamy, but she read a book (in either book 1 or book 2) that explicitly told her that there have been some angel mate triads.

7. The author finally did a little better about describing the buzz in this book, as she added some depictions of muscle spasms. I kind of think that only happened because the buzz got worse and the author needed a way to show that. If the buzz had stayed the same, we likely never would have gotten a good description of it. (We still don’t have a really good one, tbh).

8. It was super weird when Amiah and Marcus had a conversation right in front of Essie about whether the bond would eventually force her to choose Gideon over Marcus.

9. Essie’s so repetitive in stating that she and Marcus belong together, and a ton of telling instead of showing. It was like the author thought she could convince us if she just said it often enough.

10. This was a bit confusing, because we never had any hint before now that wolf mating bonds could turn permanent.

11. Cassius is an ass: “She doesn’t need a career. She’s Gideon’s mate.”

12. “God, what I wouldn’t give for a little telepathy, or hell, even an empathic magic that actually let me sense emotions.” Omfg, girl, you have empathic magic. You may not know the exact emotion, but you get the gist.

13. I didn’t understand why the new addition wouldn’t have been added to the angel bond before now.

14. It seemed to take forever to realize that she was going to have a hard time explaining why she, a human, had an angel mate bond that the angel didn’t.

15. I have no idea why Essie thought she was responsible for the death of the angel whom Gideon supposedly loved.

16. “I was pretty sure that was from real empathy and not my screwy version. I’d been having moments of that for a few days now, and as much as I wanted to pretend it didn’t mean I was changing, I couldn’t.” I didn’t notice anything like that at all, and I hate telling instead of showing.

Here are my reviews and ratings of the other books in the series:
(1) Destined Darkness ★★★★
(2) Destined Blood ★★★
(4) Destined Storm ★★★

I seriously could not stop reading this book! Let's just say that Jacob and Gideon finally join the harem, and it is wonderful! Also, one heck of a cliffhanger, which sucks, but the next book releases in nine days. I swooned over Kol (he's won me over) and his date (more or less) with Essie. Essie's powers are behaving weirdly at the moment, which I'm curious about, as well. I liked the tension Cassius added to the book. He gave the guys and Essie a bit of a push in their relationships, and to Essie on her own. I can't wait for book 4, because shit has really hit the fan, and I am down for it! I mean, it's totally going to be painful for Essie and her guys (betrayal and all that) but fun for me! 5 stars.

While Gideon redeems himself (who would have ever thought that him being so cold to Essie really meant that he LOOOVEEED HER... oh right, everyone.). Yeah, the “I-hate-you-and-treat-you-like-crap-because-I-love-you-secretly” trope is in full effect with this book.

And yet, I will say that this book brought about a little more satisfaction than the previous books, as the relationships seem to be solidifying themselves. Also, Marcus is sharing nicely like a big wolf. But I still can’t get past this issue, which I’ve managed to summarize now in my head nicely: this book’s romantic harem is all about what Essie can do for her guys, not what her guys can do for her. At one point in the book, Essie is draining herself right and left (and while “topping up” was a nice little plot device to get her in the sac with some of the under-sexed characters) trying to save her guys. She even says it point blank, “my guys need me to save them.” Is this what a RH book is supposed to be about? I found myself super exhausted for her, thinking that this whole harem idea sounds pretty much like WORK. I can see why other RH authors write the genre so that the men are so “domesticated”—serving the woman, doing laundry, watching children, making her food. There’s very little grey area in the genre, as I imagine it’s hard to write a real relationship that is intertwined between multiple people...and still meaningful for everyone. Right now, Essie’s just giving and giving and giving and sacrificing herself and feeling guilty about it all and it’s really making me hate her character.

I’d like to think that this gets better in the next book, but I’m doubtful.

Also—more KOL. PLEASE. We need him ASAP.

So I read this book and the next one and the one after that in quick succession without reviewing them after I read them. So really I'm a little confused with what I felt for this book.

I will say that this series got me to read it very quickly. I will also say that wasn't because I loved it but was more wondering what was going on with her and what was she? Was she going to be found out? etc. etc.

3.5 This series is getting better and better (or maybe I'm just starting to like the characters more and more).

Things are happening, the story is evolving, and it's starting to be exciting.

Destined to break my heart!

I needed to take the day to actually be able to wrote this review. This book tore me up at the end. The author has painstakingly built relationships between the protagonist and the men, but the secret she's been hiding from them is just destined to tear them apart. I was biting my nails, just waiting for the big reveal. I'm so happy the turnover between books in this series is relatively short or I think my heart would be dried up and useless, and I would be a phantom of my former self. I've become so I vested in this storyline, and I've been chomping at the bit for more. Yes, it ends on a bit of a cliffy, but if you've ever read a series before, well, what do you expect? It keeps us invested and keeps the juices flowing for the next installment. It's harder for me to invest in an angelic story, but I must say, the plot, the characters, and the non-stop action keep this story fresh and I'm sold on these freaking Sups! Just one note, I can't help thinking about it throughout these last books...please give this girl a toothbrush and a hot shower, please? If you're going to break her heart and mine, will you at least let her get clean before the heart stomping commences? Ha! Regardless, if you give her a well deserved breather or not, I'm sold on this world you've created and I'll still love and hate all the dirty future action you have in store! Can't wait for more!

"I didn't have doubted that my mates would have each other's backs. I didn't have to do it all, and I didn't have to do it alone."

just wow! how does the author do it! i literally have to force myself to stop listening to audible at night.
soo much foreshadowing! you know she is an angel, and she is constantly terrified that the guys will find out... and you start to think she is crazy because they love her.. but in the end... she was right. when her wings pop out! they flip out

Plot:
* Case, Giddeons brother comes and is not a fan of hers. he doesn't want her to on the team
* they are chasing drug boards who are dealing and get into lots of trouble.
* jacob gets hurt and she ends up breaking his bond with victoria... she is pissed!
* her and cole get some 1:1 time and go on a super cute date/not date
* her and giddeon get stuck under a building together and he tells her how he really feels about her
* she knows something is wrong with her and wants to tell them but doesn't
* they are at the mayors building and get into a fight, cole is thrown off a building, she jumps to save him and her wings pop out
* they freak the f out

I picked up book 3 mostly because I wanted to see what happened between Essie and Gideon, no other relationship interested me. Not only was there no progression in that area but I absolutely lost all interest...here's why:

So Essie is a natural born nephilim, nephilim are the most hated creature in the universe so she has to keep that a secret...totally fine with that. My problem comes with the fact that she is entering these supernaturally binding relationships with these guys without telling them the truth. You want to keep secrets fine then keep your distance but don't let these guys tie themselves to you knowing you're keeping such information from them.

Obviously this is a book and all fake but whatever, I hate her.

The Cliffhanger!

I am dying right now.. waited up all night to read this and finished at 5:30am. This book did not disappoint me in the least! I'm so glad Gideon finally got his crap together.. and everything was looking amazing until that ending.. I wont say why so I dont spoil it but I was hoping everyone would be more receptive to the idea and that definitely doesnt appear to be the case. All my heart strings were pulled in this book and I'm litterally dying for the next one. Ugh I need some sleep.

The third book in the series begins with Essie trying to keep her place on the team, and figure out what is going on with her powers. She's changing and she doesn't understand why, and she needs to keep it a secret. However, that is easier said than done.

This one ends on a crazy cliffhanger and makes you very interested in reading more. I enjoyed this one a lot more than the others, and I liked how Essie acted in this one.

I absolutely loved this series. Essie was seriously Kicka@@ and though it took a bit longer to warm up to one or two of the guys, by this final book, I was as in love with them as she was.

With a truly epic final big bad as well as some equally terrifying other enemies and revelations along the way, this is a series i will be happy to recomend to anyone looking for an engaging, mysterious, action packed and funny paranormal RH.

I’m still liking this story, all the MC’s are good. Obsessed with Jacob getting out from under Victoria’s control and having a bond with Essie. He deserved that. I wish there had been more info on him and Logan becoming vampires because that deal? Why did he remain friends with him? Jacob didn’t even want to be a vampire and yet his so called “friend” didn’t care and guilted him into becoming one.

Destined Fire is book 3 of the Nephilim's Destiny series. Just like potato chips, you can't consume just one: I gorged three books in two days. This third book gifted readers with a few nice plot twists and a great storyline--the introduction of Cassius added some great tension. Lots of action, excellent character and relationship development.

Like walking on a tight rop

So suspenseful and action packed. I can’t get enough of this series. Totally captures you and hard to put down. You can feel the desperation, the love and the fierce protectiveness Essie has for the team. Even though her relationship with Kol is still unknown. That ending is definitely the most hold your breath cliffhanger ever.

Addicting BUT.....

Ugh! So on my last review I said there was no cliff hangers well I had to eat my words because this book does! I'm can't wait for the next book.

Strangeness

Wow what a cliffhanger. Essie shouldn't be able to survive all that her and the team are put through. On top of everything is the secret she must keep from everyone. I still find it strange that nephilim are supposed to be impossible without evil magic. I am letting that go and focusing on her relationship with the team. I like that she is getting closer to them.

Oh snap! That ending was absolutely terrifying and thrilling and awful and awesome and ugh! So not fair, thank goodness all these books are out of I would be throwing the most epic fit to end all the fits. Poor Essie can't catch a dang break and I'm losing my mind so this review is done... next book please!

First book was great, the second became tiresome and the third was the same old. Seriously three books in and all she does is whine about being fired, the stupid body buzz, and how she is a hated Nephalim. So far the three books could easily be one for how much was actually done outside her internal breakdowns.

Yup. Does anything get any better for her.
Nope.
She's on the JP team. Weither anybody likes it. Craps hit the fan.
Then Gideon's big brother comes in and has to do an evaluation.
They things go sides ways again.
They some of them are badly hurt.
Then called to the mayor's office. Then things go side ways again.

Still a very fast, very engaging read. This one focused more on the relationships between the characters, so it felt slightly slower but was necessary for reader buy-in. Not sure I'm completely buying how much these characters are getting torn apart in these brutal fights while still staying teenage-levels of horny in the aftermath, but hey. That's urban fantasy for ya!
