So the first thing about this book is that it is a time travel romance WITH PIRATES, which made it an automatic buy for me. And I wasn't disappointed.

The North Carolina setting was really well done, and a nice change of pace in a world of historical romance set almost exclusively in England with dukes and marquesses. I also liked how Caulberg treated the pirates with historical accuracy; even though her hero is (or has been) a pirate himself, she doesn't sugar coat or romanticize them. Many of t

I usually don’t like time travel books because they’re not happy or the anachronisms irritate me but this book was a refreshingly good read!! Penny has been stuck in the past for a while so she’s not scrambling to figure out how to live (yay!) and she’s a historian (double yay!) and she reacts appropriately to finding out her shipwrecked sailor is a pirate (freaking out!). I am Always ALWAYS game for a pirate romance and this was one of the satisfying ones!!! This was a really good romance with ...more

Three Star Island is a delightful romantic adventure heavy on character and atmosphere. Penelope “Penny” Saunders is a woman lost in time who, while infatuated with early 18th-century America, yearns to return to the present. Captain William Payne—a roguish, yet charming pirate—is the perfect catalyst to give Penny a reason to stay.

One of the most attractive elements of this read is the banter between these two larger-than-life characters. Penny’s many layers are refreshing and her mixed feeling

Five stars for this amazing debut novel by author Kat Caulberg.
Penny is a time traveller. She comes from our times, but jumping through a time gate, she finds herself stranded on Three Star Island in 1716. An outcast among people with too prudish manners for her liking, she lives a quiet life in her cottage surrounded by her animals. That’s until Captain William Payne arrives. A pirate and a castaway with a dangerous past who makes her heart flip.
Penny’s future and William’s past soon clash. She

I absolutely enjoyed this read and devoured it in a long afternoon. I got sucked into the wonderful dynamic between the two parties of the main love interest, Penny and Will. They play off each other so beautifully. He's this gentleman pirate who isn't used to having to ask for help and expects his orders followed, and she's a modern female who is trapped in a situation in which she's barely surviving on her own but deeply needs to retain her autonomy in the face of everything else she's lost.

An enjoyable romp with a pirate lost to history, an historian marooned in time, and a strong cast of characters. The author has a beautifully lyrical way with words.
Penny is stuck in the past – and this is where the book differs from many time travel books – she has been there five years. In that time she has adapted to a world that is not kind to headstrong women, and forged a lonely life on the island. The author builds the world with skill, bringing in food and house problems, storms and soci

This book was just a great, satisfying romance. It reminded me of all those Johanna Lindsey and Kathleen E. Woodiwiss novels of old. The time travel aspect is awesome for Outlander lovers! Penny and William's desire and attraction almost jump off the page and watching the evolution of their relationship was consuming. Filled with action, drama and nice bits of humor between the two main characters, this is a must read for anyone who likes historical romance. Can't wait to read the next book from ...more

What a fantastic debut novel! This is a well crafted time-travel romance, comparable to Gabaldon in the richness of the world building, and the emotional exploration of the isolation and conflict inherent in the premise of time travel. I fell in love with the characters, in all their flawed imperfect glory, and cheered them every step of the way. Both tender and steamy the romance delivered--this is one for the keeper shelf!

Three Star Island is a delightful historical romance that captivates readers with time travelling, tall ships, and a wee bit of pirate ween. Our sassy-frass heroine, Penny, is trapped in the Carolinas circa 1720’s. She’s already processed the shell shock by the time the story begins, and has hodge-podged a modest life for herself on the outskirts of a colonial town. While scavenging for supplies, she rescues a shipwrecked renegade who’s charming, roguishly handsome, and destined to rustl

In Three Star Island Kat Caulberg takes us back to the 18th Century for a buccaneering time travel romance. We are introduced to Penny Saunders, a very 21st century woman, fascinated with history, who has found herself thrown back through the centuries to the colonial era Caribbean island of Three Star. By the time we meet her Penny has been put through the wringer, battered by her experiences being stranded in the past. A chance encounter with a half-dead stranger on the beach sets up the narra ...more

Shiver me timbers, I could’ve kept on sailing the pages of this book…!

Three Star Island—time-travel, pirates, romance—is Kat Caulberg’s debut novel, and boy, did it sneak up on me…! Aye, matey, it did. (Oh, it should be noted the stereotypical & historically inaccurate pirate talk is NOT endorsed or used by the author, only the reviewer. So, grab your bottle of rum, sit back and deal with it. Savvy?)

Penelope ‘Penny’ Saunders is a historian stuck in history thanks to a temperamental time portal.

This book was my first read by Kat Caulberg, which is obvious as it is her debut novel.
I have read some time travel romances, and this one really stand out.
It’s been a long time since I had read a one-sided view book, it added more mystery about William Payne.
The heroine is of course, the usual woman coming from the future, trapped back in time. But in this story, it is not about this journey, but what she became once she realized she won’t be able to return.
The author via some flashbacks or mem

Penny travels back in time to study the past for professional research. Only on the third trip, the time gate vanishes and doesn't come back, leaving her stranded for years. She lives in an isolated house outside of town, peopled by narrow-minded folk who consider her a harlot or worse. One night after a storm, she rescues an almost-drowned man on the beach. She's shocked to discover he's Captain William Payne, a famous pirate she's spent her life researching. And he's nothing like she'd assumed ...more

I know I have HUGE thing for pirates and history and time travel tales but let me tell you this is an exceptional read. It is high adventure with action and danger along with a sweet, sexy romance all tied into an interesting and unique time travel story. I started this not expecting to much because this author is new to me and time travel stories abound but she put together a story with excellent writing and wonderful, complex characters that I fell in love with. Good baddies too. This story ha ...more

Let me start by saying I’m very picky about reading time travel romance. Outlander (my favorite book of all time) has set the bar very high! But I was intrigued enough by the premise of Three Star Island to grab a copy, and I’m SO glad I did. Penny is a modern-era woman who has devoted her career to researching 18th century pirates. After stepping into a time portal, she finds herself in 1720’s North Carolina—the very place she has studied and written about for years. Trapped 300 years in the pa ...more

“You’re a good soul, Penelope. You forgave me my sins, though God knows why. You’ve no affection for pretenses, you’ve brooked none of my nonsense, you’ve a filthy mouth and a sharp mind. I don’t have to pretend when I’m with you. Do you understand what that’s worth?”

Ordinarily, a time traveling romance begins in the present, with the heroine stumbling back into time as either the Inciting or the Act I turning point, and one of the things I absolutely love, love, love about Kat Caulberg’s Three
4.5, rounded up to 5. I can't find much wrong with this delightful piece of escapism. It reminded me in some ways of Calypso Magic, a (granted, dated) favorite of mine, in which the main characters are (in this case, somewhat) isolated together on a beachy locale.

I was hesitant to read this because I wasn't sure about the time-travel aspect. I don't dislike it, but it's not really my thing. However, the time travel remained mostly in the background.

The characters were lovely, and I was totally,

Entertaining romance follows the growing attraction between Penny, a modern-day time-travelling historian who finds herself stranded in the distant past, and Will, a fearsome and legendary pirate who washes up on shore near where Penny is living in social isolation. I enjoyed how the author slowly reveals Penny's background, exploring realistically how one might adapt as a very modern woman in a distinctly unwelcoming time for women, and also incorporates a lot of pirate lore without romanticizi ...more

When you look at the cover, you expect a romantic story where the heroin is like putty in the hands of the strong man. Let me tell you that you are correct to assume this, but this is, once again, a case of not judging a book by its cover because the story is about so much more than that.

I would like to add one more thing about the cover. I love the way her dress seems like to become one with the sea. Very clever idea to do it like this.

About the story then.

This was a really enjoyable book, as a matter of fact I have to confess that this book actually surprised me. Kat’s prose is smooth and fluent, the time appropriate vocabulary is impressive as well as her nautical knowledge.

Three Star Island is a book that kept me engaged, it kept me interested, the dialogue was witty and smart with relatable characters and realistic scene descriptions.

Very well written!

All in all I highly recommend this book, it contains pirates, time travel, adventure, drama,

Brilliant time travel romance (with pirates!)

A lot of reviews already picked out what I love about this book.

-Penny is a historian & has been living in the past for a while, so when we’re thrown into the story it’s straight into the action without the preamble or the “help I’m in the past” to create tension. That all comes from her current situation and the people she has already met/has just met.

-The flavour of the time is well-balanced with historical details and yet it still bounces along wi

Heroine Penny is stranded in the past, where her 21st century lifestyle has made her an outcast in an 18th century town off the coast of the Carolinas. When she rescues a castaway who turns out to be one of her former academic research subjects, she must confront both the reality of a historical legend, and her own feelings for the pirate William Payne.

What struck me most was Penny's raw and very conflicted feelings about her whole situation. She's stuck in the past, but she's not entirely missi

For as long as she can remember, Kat Caulberg has been obsessed with history and the paranormal.
