This glorious chapbook by Manchester poet Maz Hedgehog riffs upon classical literature and folklore, particularly the English epic poem, The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser. This is not a translation or adaptation.

The poet writes entirely original poems focussing on her own fictional creations, but weaves in deft allusions, and lets the older material serve as contrast and

This book has been officially described as 'glorious'. I would say that sums it up beautifully, but there are a few more words I'd like to add: Vivat Regina is divine and evocative, executed with the raw passion and ruthless precision of a bloody, beating heart. Read it.

This!! Was!! Fantastic!!

I am a huge fan of the classics and, in particular, Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queen. I cannot tell you how excited I was to see that this was a revisioning of that particular classic. In poetry! By a bisexual, black poet!!

I haven't read poetry in over a decade. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to read this collection. Maz's language and imagery skills are phenomenal. They carried me away into misty, faerie realms with the entire range of human emotions.

My favorite piece of a piece, if you will,

"She was made of gold and snowfall,
Yes.
But in the same way
Meteors are made of dirt,
Like
Oceans are made of water."

I can go through and fill this review with stunning bits, but this one is by far my favorite, from Una, Knav

I knew this was gonna be phenomenal!!!

ty to the author, i was given an arc in exchange for an honest review

I have never read anything by Maz and not fallen instantly in love with it. She has the best kind of immersive writing, words and sentences and pages that just weigh you down in splendour as you're reading them. Always Maz manages to bring a really original narrative into her poetry which is evident in Vivat Regina. I love how detail oriented her fable-y poems tend to be, like there is so m
