I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway winner. I really, really, wanted to like this book; or, at least, to learn some new insights, techniques etc. Approx 2/3 of the way through, and I can officially state... I strongly dislike this book. Who edited this?
I made a mental note - it wasn’t until approx 30% of my way into this book, that the author STARTED to (kind of) dispense any morsel of advice/info/insight. Then, he gives you a tiny tidbit every 20 pages or so. I kept hearing the “but, wait... there’s more” infomercial sales pitch in my head. In fact, there are constantly links to his other books/personal resources, social media accounts etc.
At one point, I started highlighting every repetitive, narcissistic thing the author said - I just checked, and I had 18 highlights!! That’s when I officially decided that I hate this book.
Examples... @29%: “based on my firsthand experience working with countless thousands of men, women, and children from all walks of life around the world since 1997.”
@45%: “...whether I’m coaching celebrities, professional athletes, CEOs, working couples, or entrepreneurs...”
@50%: “If you’re like the countless thousands of people I’ve coached over the last two decades, you might have a similar experience.”
@60%: “if you were to add up the hundreds of thousands of words I’ve published in my books, articles, and blog posts, and the millions of words I’ve spoken in my keynote speeches, private workshops, and live seminars over the last 20-plus years...”
The rest are visible via my notes. The number of times he talks about his “20+ years of experience,” or “countless thousands of people he’s helped,” or “keynote speeches, private workshops, and live seminars” is beyond ridiculous.
Finally, I felt as though the author essentially took other methods, made subtle changes, or literally made up his own words (aka Afformations) in order to “create” his own system. Oh, then he knocks those “other” systems.
Thus far, I’ve maybe found three useful takeaways. Whether I’ll actually finish the book = tbd.
This is one of those books that presents some counter-intuitive advice. Enjoyed the "shelf-help" concept and it unpacked the reason why others are insanely "successful" yet can't explain it while others fail to reach "success" and also can't explain it.
Worth checking out and one that I'll likely need to read several times to capture the golden nuggets of wisdom.
The book had great advice but yeah it seemed more like he was trying to sell me a course. I definitely learned from it, but it seemed like every time he did give good insight it was followed by that’s why i should buy into his coaching. Which I understand that’s how he makes his money. It was overall a solid book.
I love how Noah has so many simple things anyone can start doing to improve their life. It’s habits I would have never thought to do on my own, but make perfect sense. Thanks Noah!
Loved this book! Great for business owners. Noah’s spiritual testimony is also so powerful. Thoroughly enjoyed this read and will buy a paper copy to read again and again because it’s packed full of golden nuggets! 💯
When an anyone offers to teach a skill or process it is about the other person learning. Learning is a specific behavior, complete with neurological, psychological, sociological, and emotional underpinnings. This book only cursorily addresses any of these issues. Learning is not defined. So if the reader had a learning problem this one-size-fits-all approach likely will miss the solution. I read a LOT of self-help and guidance books in diverse subjects., and it seems there are many people who have achieved success (define success: lots of money, or prestige, or status, or creation, or happiness) seem to think they are also gifted in teaching others their Method. Since all behaviors, including learning and teaching, have been studied and measured by experts, it would seem that if a person perceives themself as a master of a skill and wants to share this skill with others, they'd employ some of the principles determined to be effective by these experts. This author provides none of these. The book begins with ringing endorsements. That is a suspicious action in itself. A sales technique. Selling and teaching are not synonymous. Next the author shares a personal anecdote to illustrate how he learned to be powerful. By zip lining. He never explains power- in context, daily life, or rationale. He offers the wirs "habits" in the title, but neglects to define habits, explore the neurologic core of a habit, and cites no references to people who have previously studied this subject. If I want to learn any skill I go to a teacher who has demonstrated excellence and is willing to impart their knowledge. Sometimes I can learn from YouTube , after watching many people who believe they can teach. Often I have to plough through nearly a dozen to find "gold." To me it seems that many authors of how-to books are skilled salesmen who are now marketing yet another product, the effectiveness of which has a reliability and validity of nearly zero. I didnt learn anything from this author. An accurate measure of excellence in three words is: coherence, relevance, and organization. This book is not fully coherent, it is relevant to the author clearly, and often seemed disorganized. I was disappointed.
Wow! What an extraordinary audio program. I gave this 5 stars because I learned at least two critical distinctions for living a better life.
One of them is called afformations, which is like "formulating" goals or desires instead of only affirming them. the author's ideas was, "what if you affirm (make firm) something not formed right?"
Really it's presupposition questions. Like "how come I'm going to achieve this goal?" "How come I'm so happy?" And it really is a life-changing thing to only ask positive questions.
the other thing is somewhat of a corollary of that and that is "how come I finally allow myself to succeed big in life?" Most people are holding themselves back from huge success in life for whatever reason and one small simple shift can turn their whole life around. I believe humans have extraordinary potential and I'd love to see everyone live their highest life. and I think listening to this program would help anyone.
There was good content. I will likely listen to it again and try to parse out the bits that I found very useful.
My issue with the audio is that Noah seems to be self promoting more than actually giving the useful information that I actually purchased this for. As I said above, I will likely try to listen to this again knowing that it seems like a giant sales pitch, and just try to pry out the useful stuff.
