I'm bored. Jude is whiney. Seriously needs an editor, and if I'm noticing that, it must be bad because editing issues often go right past me.

Interesting story, poor execution. Desperately needs an editor.

The Witch's Familiar
is the first novella in TJ Nichols' series, Familiar Fates. It tells the story of the witch Jude and bear shifter Mack. Jude is sent to a small town to investigate the killings of local farm life he has to prove he isn't always a screw up in order to save his magic from being stripped from him. When he first meets Mack he pegs him for the killer but discovers he's actually his familiar / mate. Somehow Jude has to stop the creatu

This one was just okay for me. The magical mystery was compelling and interesting, but the relationship/romance element was low heat and kind of blah. I didn't feel the chemistry between the characters at all, and the writing wasn't strong enough to give me a sense of who they are/what they looked like/why they would want to be together. I think the author missed a major opportunity to portray their version of the witch/familiar bond, since it was barely explained or explored at all. If you like ...more

This is a story of Jude who is a witch and has been sent to a small town to investigate the mysterious deaths of farm animals. Mack is a bear shifter who is the local mechanic. When Jude meets Mack, he knows that he is a bear shifter & believes he is the one that is killing the animals. Jude soon realizes that Mack is not killer but is his familiar and mate. Mack feels that being a familiar is like being a slave, he won't have free will and is going to be used by his witch. Jude strikes a deal w ...more

The Witch’s Familiar is the first book in T.J. Nichol’s new Familiar Mates series. One of the things I really like about Nichols’ writing is the really immersive world building and this story is no exception. Nichols gives a really interesting take on the world of magic, witches, familiars, and shifters. I always enjoy when an author can take familiar themes and build them into something unique and creative and I think Nichols really succeeds in that here. The wo

Fun and fast moving. Fated mates with just enough push and pull against the bond to believe that the romance is more than just destiny.
A fish out of water vibe for Jude as he navigates his first investigation and being in the country (poor city boy).
Great banter and chemistry.
Solid plot. (And I don't trust that male witch at the Coven).
Thoroughly enjoyable.

A Great Series Starts Here

This is a new to me author, and I'm so glad I found this series! I'm looking forward to more. Recommended!
A curse or a blessing

This was a fascinating book with a world that develops as it goes and a slow burn romance that goes hot and cold and steamy and fierce.

Sending Jude out to the middle of nowhere certainly feels like a test he is meant to fail. After all, one member of the board hates him and the rest won't stick up for him. Add in that he was never really trained and it seems like a mission set to fail. But when Jude goes up there set on getting through, things start to change. It becomes cl

Paranormal, fated mates, slow-burn

I really enjoyed this story.
Jude was so snarky and Rob is is so grumpy.
Jude is a witch trying to redeem himself in the eyes of his coven, but the reasons behind his assignment are clouded with mystery.
Jude is instantly suspicious of Rob which doesn't earn him any goodwill from Rob, a bear shifter who's bern accused of a crime.
When a monkey wrench is thrown into the works by fate deciding they're fated mates,
well Rob's not having it because there's no way he's g

Let me start by saying the magic in this one was really cool. Jude could straight up control electricity and create lightening and that was so awesome. I liked that Mack was much like his bear counterpoint, pretty grumpy most of the time, but in much better spirits when he was in the great outdoors. The mystery was interesting, although solved very quickly, but even the new creatures provided more interesting world building. There did seem to be a couple of things left up in the air, an

The introduction showed promise, and the preview provided a good setup, but the story slowly squandered those resources and eventually gets lost in constructed angst and miscommunications between Jude and Mack. I gradually lost interest as the storyline slowly dissolves with the bumbling, fumbled responses from our MCs. Scattered throughout are random BE nouns which do not fit in AE situations and serve to interrupt the thought, much the same as a small stone in your shoe will interr

Jude is a witch with a very rare set of magic, he going to lose his powers if he doesn't solve this case. What is killing cows in a small town. when he meets Mack he at first thinks it is him since he is a bear shifter. but things take a turn in the road while out in the crazy ass dark woods. They find the pair of creatures that are killing everything in their path. Mack becomes Jude familiar but they are not totally sold on the idea of being together. even when they try to protect each other yo ...more

So first of the name of the terror in this book killed me , I really don't don't know how to pronounce it, it just kept popping up as as someone who likes butts alot(lol).
Great story as far as the creature hunting goes, I love learning about new mythical beings/creatures, and there was a lot of action in that. But as for romance it burned hot and cold alot.
I wonder if we'll get to see these two again, because there seems to be some shady things happening in the coven.
Hope and Home

What happens when a witch and a bear shifter kiss? A whole lot of fun and trouble. I’m a fan of fates mates and magic, so when the two are combined it catches my interest. Jude and Mack are quite the pair and although a bit stubborn, I enjoyed seeing them learn to work together and fall in love. There are a few people in this series that concern me and I wonder if we will deal with them again. A charged beginning to a series.

What a great read!

I love when books have a mix of paranormal. Most often books with shifters or witches are more heavily on one side or the other. This was perfectly blended and added other paranormal elements too. Plus the bad/good was more shades of grey rather than starkly divided. That right there was a big plus to me. That added the touch of realism to the fantasy that I need in order to connect better. Now I can’t wait to see how the series continues.

This is the first book in The Familiar Mates Series. A great idea but the writing did not feel complete. I needed more world building, story and action. The characters needed more detail and balance. Jude and Mack are the MC’s of this book. Even though I had some problems with this book I will give the next book a try because I do like the potential of the story. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Great book

This was a great story.

I loved the mystery of the plot, the magic and supernatural.

I really liked both Mack and Jude. They are perfect for each other from the beginning. The push and pull was great, as well the trust and heat that builds between them.

Great story to read on a rainy day

Good read

This was a good start to this series. At first, I didn't care for Jude. I found him to be very immature, but as the story keeps going, he matures once he has to face his feelings and the situation with Mack. Mack was just what he needed to grow; they were perfect for each other. I'm just wanting to know; what's up with Landstrom??

Excellent start to this series

I've had this book in my TBR list for a while and just finally got around to reading it. I wish that I hadn't waited because this was excellent - though I suspect that the full series has been published by now, so I don't have to wait to binge on the whole thing.

This was a great new series. I had not read anything from this author and I am glad I did. Great read! Love the paranormal element. Interesting world that was created and I hope to see more of these two in the future!

Interesting paranormal genre

A new to me take on witches and their familiars. The coven leader named Landstrom got under my skin in a bad way. Always one character that does, right?

Overall, I really enjoyed this. It's not earth-shattering, but it has more to it than I was expecting, so I was pleasantly surprised. I'm willing to give the second book in the series a chance.

Only the Fates...

Wasn't sure if I was going to like the premise of the story but I loved this story. Jude and Mack make an awesome couple. The build-up of the story was interesting and intriguing. I'm definitely reading the next in the series.

An enjoyable read.

The story was enjoyable, as were the characters. A few grammatical errors but not many. Will read the next book.

I expected this book to really wow me and it was just soso. I love this author but couldn’t get into this story. I’ll definitely give the other series installments a chance
Independent reviewer for Gay Romance reviews, I was gifted my copy of this book.

I liked this, a LOT!

Jude has magic, but his control isn't the best. Dent to find out what is killing cows in a small town is his last chance to become a fully fledged member of the Coven. Failure will result in his magic being stripped. Meeting bear shifter Mack gives Jude his culprit, but also, his familiar and Jude was NOT expecting that. Mack, as a shifter, is wary of the familiar tag: so much bad history betwee
