This novella begins after the events of Song of Blood & Stone—it’s both an extended epilogue AND a prequel, so it’s advisable to read that novel first.

For Jasminda ul-Sarifor, the war may be over but her conflict is not. New, overwhelming duties leave her caught between two worlds but belonging to neither. She turns once more to Jack, hoping the bond that got them through

This was a sweet and inspiring novella with a little murder-mystery to go along with it!

Review:

This was a great short story, that gives more back story for Jack.
I loved getting to know his character more and reading this short Murder-Mystery.

First quarantine read! I found this book an interesting sequel. It gave a lot more insight into the way society and magic work in this world. I think the challenge was that because the characters themselves weren't clear on all the ways magic works, the reader also doesn't have a clear picture of it. And this would be fine, but it felt like it made my understanding of the book overall a little muddled. Another thing that made the book confusing were the multiple storylines- there are four main c ...more

I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced reader copy of this novella from the author in exchange for an honest review. I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book but I was excited to go back into the world of earthsingers once more. L. Penelope was able to craft an interesting mystery that gives us some background into the Elsira and Lagamiri worlds. This Novella is a little different from Song of Blood & Stone simply because it is more mystery than action and really didn't hold much ...more

This was a wonderful peek into Jack and Jasminda's life after the fall of the Mantle and how Jasminda is handling her new responsibilities, while also showing us more insight into Jack.

L. Penelope's writing is always so insightful and wonderful, I didn't want this novella to end. The mystery and identity of the culprit in this story is written so well, I was unable to identify who it was until their identity was revealed!

I also love how we were shown how Darvyn and Jack's relationship and frien

As someone who is still in love with Song of Blood and Stone, this novella did not disappoint. I absolutely loved that we essentially picked back up where the last book ended. Yet I appreciated it gave details from the first book which meant a newbie didn't have to pour over the first book in order to dive into this one.

While I appreciated the first book was more of Jasminda's story , ya girl is tired of women being dangled in her face only for it to become about men, I am happy that we got som

As part of my reread of the Earthsinger Chronicles, I’m reading the novellas for the first time. This one is ostenibly set two weeks after the events of the first book. The framing is that Jack is telling a story about when he first became High Commander of the Army to encourage a frustrated Jasminda, now being called “Once Wretched, Now Royal” by the newspapers. She’s is trying to handle her new responsibilities as queen: figuring out what a queen is even supposed to do, smoothing tensions betw ...more

A Breath of Dust and Dawn is a novella that follows the events of Song of Blood and Stone. This eARC was a courtesy by L. Penelope (THANK YOU SO MUCH) and it’s story was a nice, heart-warming return to the serie.

I talked and talked about how I fell in love with L. Penelope's story and it's the truth. Her characters are real, charismatic and enthralling. Going back to this universe warmed my heart. Jasminda and Jack are empathetic, adorable and understand each other beyond looks and conversation.

As you may remember from my review of Song of Blood and Stone I was absolutely blown away by the first book in this series! I could not wait to get my hands on a copy of Breath of Dust & Dawn as soon as I knew that it was coming out!

I was most definitely not let down.

Just as it's advertised, this book is both an extended epilogue and a prequel. At first, I was concerned about that concept and felt like it would be too much in one single novella. However, Penelope was definitely up to the challen

Breath of Dust and Dawn is a mix between a prequel and a sequel to A Song Of Blood and Stone, with one character recounting a story that happened before the events of that novel. I found the actual plot interesting and I really enjoyed the mystery elements of the story. The magic was explored in more detail and I really enjoyed seeing Jack before the novel.

Darvyn is the star of this story and I did enjoy his portion of the story. Reading this right before Whispers might have been the wrong idea,

Lots of mystery in this novella of the Earthsinger Chronicles. This picks up after the events of Song of Blood & Stone, but quickly dives a little back into the past. It was great getting to know more of Jack's history. We also get a feel for what's to come in book 2. I'm looking forward to reading the newer version, and hoping that it still carries all of what I loved in the other version. Who am I kidding?! I know that it will stick true to the characters and world that Penelope has created. L ...more

I quite like L. Penelope's writing style, so this book was definitely a good read. It didn't rely too heavily on information from book 1, but you definitely wouldn't fully understand the gravity of the situation or the relationships between the characters without reading Song of Blood and Stone first. This is a very Jack-centric story, and it explains his relationship with Darvyn. I'm assuming the information is necessary, but I don't understand how it ties into the rest of the story just yet. This was a novella about Jack and Jasminda. The short murder mystery was definitely intriguing and I was invested in trying to find out who did it. I think it’s because I read this book after Whispers of Shadow and Flame because I didn’t feel as invested in the relationship between Jack and Jasminda anymore. The book read as a Disney short, where the princess finds clarity overnight after a conversation with a friend. Not complaining, just pointing out how it felt to me.

If you liked Song of Blood & Stone then you are really going to enjoy the novella Breath of Dust & Dawn. It fills in details from the first book - so definitely read that first. The world building is good, but the character building is great! I can't wait for the next book in the Earthsinger Chronicles.
Full disclosure: I received an ARC and loved every page.

I loved seeing a bit of Jack's backstory and the wedding plans for our main characters. It was just a little thing, but it was cute. The story Jack told was heartbreaking, but gives us more of an idea how the tensions between the races in this book built to what they were in book one. ...more

I'm not a big short story reader but I followed up Song with Breath of Dust & Dawn immediately so that it was more like an additional chapter, and it sort of worked. It was a good story that helped further develop the characters, although I think I might have liked it better if it were not framed as a flashback. ...more
