‘O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us. To see oursels as ithers see us!’ – Robert Burns

Alexei Iskander appears to be making his literary debut with THE PRINCE OF MANHATTAN. He offers no biographical information so we must get to know him solely through his new novel.

In our current state of living we are so engrossed and absorbed with instant gratification and ‘things’ that we often lose sight of the bigger picture. Drive by a high school at school day’s end and nary a face can be see: all attention is on cell phones and texting, the students seemingly oblivious to the real world and those in it. And it seems as though this phenomenon is an influence in Iskander’s novel: a figure from a remote time happens on earth and is bewildered by all the ‘things’ that constitute our contemporary status.

Prince Leofric is in Northumbria some ‘thousand and a half’ years in the past, bemoaning the fact that he has yet to marry as custom and his father, King Cedric, demand. Prince Leofric is a hero in battle but when his father dies he is not the chosen one for ascension. Instead, with the help of a mystic, he is exiled through the Portal and lands in contemporary Manhattan. All of the amenities we currently take for granted become monsters to Leofric – cars, cell phones, the pace of life, and all – and the only salvation he encounters is in the form of Miranda Hazelgrove – a student eager to escape her boring life. Together they make the ‘adjustment,’ sharing adventures and falling in love. The ending – best to leave that exit for the pleasure of the readers’ discovery. It does suggest that there may be further books in the series.

The fast paced story is immediately accessible, including concepts of past myths and lifestyles and drawing attention to the manner in which we view our present. It works on every level and serves as a fine introduction to a new novelist.

The book "Prince of Manhattan" is a thorough entertainer. In fact, I was so engrossed with the book that I completed it within a single sitting with only minor breaks for eating and other issues. The book took around 6 hours to read completely and I enjoyed every page of it. Only, the end I felt was little incomplete, because I did not come to know what was the final decision of the prince and his girlfriend.

To start with, the author presented us with a bit of ancient heroism. Now, this ancient, handsome, and headstrong hero is thrust into modern times, and he is very much at loss and bewildered by the present day happenings. It was hilarious to see his point of view of cars as metallic monsters who ate up human beings. Later, our hero comes to know that humans have, in fact, tamed these monsters and willingly enter inside them to go to their respective destinations. Again, the first time he saw a person talking on a cell phone, he was convinced that the person is mad. Later, he is surprised by the shower and other modern amenities. After, these hilarious incidents we get the frightening ones when deformed monsters chase the ancient hero and his girlfriend in a bid to kill them.
Hence, the story has romance, action, suspense, thrill, and comedy all garbed inside a decent dressing of an adventure novel with no vulgarity to be found at any place. Could easily be presented to a young adult or teenager.

Prince Leofric is next in line for the throne and is an accomplished warrior fresh from a new victory for his father, the king. His glory is short-lived however, when he is accused of murder, imprisoned and forced to jump through a portal into the unknown. Miranda meanwhile, is a student at New York University and is sort of coasting through her life. When she is saved by Leofric from two muggers, she takes pity on him and takes him home. They both struggle with the growing attraction between them as Leofric attempts to return to his rightful home with Miranda’s help.
The story was vaguely reminiscent of the movie Kate & Leopold, if you add in murder, witches and court intrigues, but I still liked the way the story was written. It is told from Leofrics and Mirandas point of view as well as Leofrics’ Uncle Aethelred and has some humor in the misunderstandings of different societies in different centuries.

"The Prince of Manhattan" is a young adult, romantic, fantasy/time travel novel (though at 148 pages, nearly a novella) featuring Miranda Hazelgrove, a modern day college student, who meets Leofric, a portal jumping prince from a thousand years in the past. I believe this is author, Alexei Iskander's first book - it was published first anyway, if Goodreads can be believed. Despite my desire to support new writers, this was not ready for publication based on need for editing alone. I admit I am not this book's audience and that is not where my negativity comes from. I can easily forgive the absurdly multi-layered genre and even the at times cringe worthy dialogue but come on, the term is not "saddled up", it's "sidled up", sentences should not be eight lines long and for crying out loud, sync up the tenses within paragraphs at the very least. Okay, I'll take off my editor hat now.

Iskander has the bones of a good novel here. I would like to see that potential fulfilled.

An action packed jump through time

The Prince of Manhattan is the story of Prince Leofric and what leads him to leave his world behind and jump into a portal that spirits him away to modern day new York. Exiled from his future on the throne and branded a murderer, Leo now must learn about this new world and find way home to his place next to the king. Miranda is the young college student who is saved from muggers when Leo steps into this new world and stops the muggers. As the two grow closer, they battle emotion and loss. Leo longs to get home and Miranda is willing to help him return. Follow this epic journey through time and space. Discover a passion that spans the galaxy and see if this couple will last or disappear like a shadow at sunrise. Good characters and a fun storyline. Check it out folks, this one is a pretty good read.

A very interesting story that did not leave me indifferent from the first pages. We meet two main characters living in different worlds. One day, Prince Leofric falls into the modern world, and more specifically in New York. Meanwhile, Miranda is a student of college and she lives in New York. Also, she didn’t suspect that he would appear and would change her life. Then Leofric saves Miranda from criminals, and here begins their story that changed the lives of Miranda and Leofric. Miranda helps him to come back home and trusting relationship appears between them.
I love stories with time and different worlds, so I read with great pleasure " The Prince of Manhattan". I liked the idea, the plot and the way of interpretation. I advise everyone to get it and read it, because you can enjoy it like me and also you will get a lot of positive emotions for sure.

Prince Leofric and Miranda are the main characters of The Prince of Manhattan, a book written by Alexei Islander. The premise is interesting, appealing to every fan of romantic comedies. A prince is exiled and forced to jump through a portal, landing in New York city, almost literally into Miranda’s arms.
The story writes itself and we can pretty much guess how it ends, nevertheless, it is entertaining and the characters are well-written, with some well-placed jokes and intrigue thrown into the mixture. It’s fun and does not aim at anything else. I agree with some reviews, that an editor is in need: there are some errors and things that make no sense. If you’re not a grammar nazi, it will not prevent you from enjoying the read.

“The Prince of Manhattan” firmly places you in the middle of a Viking power struggle as King Cedric was ailing and then got poisoned! Prince Leofric while trying to come to terms with his father’s sudden death is then suspected of the murder of his father’s most trusted companion. The pace of this story seems all set with murders, suspicions and very strong-willed under-handed men and then Prince Leofric is transported into another world – the future.
The future New York is showed as another type of challenging war for the prince as you see him trying to understand this new world. He meets Miranda who gets a taste of his gallantry and they become very intrigued with each other. The concept is different enough to hold your attention.

Left me with mixed emotions

I wanted to love this book. I love romance novels. And the background on this should have peaked my interest but it fell flat for me. Prince Leofric is set up for his father’s murder by his conniving uncle and a local witch. He is transported from the Middle Ages to modern day NYC where he saves Miranda from some not-nice men. They embark on a journey together that ultimately finds them drawn together romantically. The story reminds me of a reverse of the movie Enchanted. I liked that movie so I expected to like this. But it just fell a little flat for me. I agree with other reviewers that it needs another dose of proofing and editing which would be a major help. Kudos to the author for a valiant attempt.

The Prince of Manhattan by Alexei Iskander was a fun and enjoyable read. Prince Leofric and Miranda are the main characters and make a fun couple to read about. The Prince becomes exiled and is forced to jump through a time potal, landing in modern New York City. Meeting Miranda a New York based student. Prince Leofric saves Miranda from Criminals starting their relationship. The time travel and romance were very entertaining and worth the read.

Action pack time traveling tale

I enjoyed the storyline. There was one flaw though--the prince's speech pattern was too modern for him, which I found distracting. Otherwise, it was entertaining.

Great

I love books where there is a character that is completely clueless and needs to learn the ways of a new area. With the help of a friend, they learn valuable lessons. I eat these types of books up. I really enjoyed this one, it’s definitely gonna be one of my favorites. Pick it up! You won’t regret it!
