The story that follows four boyhood friends from their youth to the end of the Second Boer War as they learn about themselves when they experience the harshness of war, loss of lives and build a deep-bond of friendship that lasts a lifetime.

Barely teenagers, William and his friends rebelled against their parents and the British Devonshire Regiment to enlist in the British military before they reached the legal age requirement. Britain's wars would soon take him to India, Egypt and then to South Africa where he was propelled into one of Britain’s most brutal battles in history.

Depicting daily struggles and emotions through the eyes and diary entries of a fellow soldier, all the while, inviting the reader into an otherwise closed off and inaccessible part of military history.
William rises to the challenge with each battle demonstrating his raw courage and fearless defense of his country, Queen and fellow soldiers – without reservation, all the while coming to terms with youth, death and friendship and how all are stolen under the perilous watch of war.

From his secretive enlistment, his near brushes with greats like the young Winston Churchill, and Mahatma Gandhi who was in the ambulance regiment. War and Military are the backdrop of this English coming of age tale that will weave the reader through the tumultuous years with the British in South Africa before he moved and settled in Canada. Diary entries of a fellow soldier help the reader experience the emotion and understated experiences that soldiers in war often have a hard time expressing.

William’s experiences with death on the battlefield, the trauma suffered by a close friend and the struggles of another left behind, all help to form the hero that his fellow soldiers, the British government and Queen Victoria would eventually honour under the suggestion of her grandson Prince Christian-Victor.

During his service, he learns what it really takes to be a soldier and is rewarded by being one of only 8 men in the world to receive the Queen’s Scarf, hand-made by Queen Victoria, that would hold an honour to last generations.
