Az én hibám. Arra számítottam, hogy ez a kötet egyfajta mentális térképet ad a középkori ember vallásértelmezéséhez, bemutatja, hogyan gondolta és képzelte el a kor gyermeke mindazt, amit az egyházatyák a maguk magasztos magányában kiókumláltak. Igazából fogalmam sincs, honnan szedtem ezt az előfeltételezést – már azon túl, hogy nyilván ezt akartam beleolvasni a címbe. Ezzel szemben ez a könyv egy szimpla összefoglalása a kereszténység történetének a Római Birodalom bukásától nagyjából a reformációig mintegy 150 oldalon – és hát 150 oldal az finoman szólva is kevés egy ilyen sokrétű témához. Ebből fakad, hogy szinte semmit nem találtam benne, ami nagyon új vagy nagyon meglepő lett volna – úgyhogy ezt az értékelést most kénytelen vagyok arra kihegyezni, hogy nem nagyon tudok értékelést írni róla. (Nálam ez is min. 15-20 sor.) Három és fél csillagnál kevesebbet azért nem akarok adni rá, mert különben meg egy tisztességes vázlat azoknak, akik épp csak kicsit belekóstolnának a vallástörténetbe. Ráadásul nagyon szép kötet, igazán tetszetős képanyaggal: jó sok fényben fürdő angyal meg szent, valamint számos szenvedő Krisztus színarany háttérben – sokat elárul a korszak ellenállhatatlan vonzalmáról a nemesfémek iránt. Ezt amúgy megértem, Emma lányom is odavan a csillogó dolgokért. (Amiből viszont nem szeretnék messzemenő következtetéseket levonni a kor szellemisége, és egy 5 éves hölgy gondolkodásmódja között.)

I read this book for a class in church history. The paintings are magnificent. The writing is less so. I had difficulty getting into the work and following the rather disjointed topics. To me, it would have been better to go about it chronologically.

I enjoyed the read, but the ordering and arranging of the events was so hard to follow. It's not in order and the chapter groupings are not extremely tight, so it read more as a collection of small stories or fun facts. Thankfully the format was short enough that it didn't overstay its welcome. The illustrations were gorgeous.

Lots of good and interesting information, with plenty of sidebar articles on specific topics but this very format, plus somewhat the style of the author's writing, makes the chronology of the history very choppy and thus hard to follow the exact sequence of events.
