Amazing insights into the development of conscipusness

I first read this book many years ago, along with his other great work, Soul of the White Ant. Rereading it now was a delight. Eugene Marais was not a scientist, yet he is the founding father of ethology. He saw baboons as the closest living animal, in terms of the development of consciousness, to the ancestral humans who first replaced instinctive behaviour with learned behaviour, an evolutionary advantage that allowed us to break free of the constraints of a narrow range of habitats.
His insights into the evolution of consciousness are all the more remarkable in that he was not influenced in his studies by previous findings, and had no formal scientific training. His interesting and captivating story of how the conscious mind developed gives a fascinating insight into the evolution of our species.

Soul of the Ape by Eugene Marais

This is a nature documentary for the mind, if there was half as much depth in biology as this man was able to impart in this book there is more than enough to inspire and renew ones curiosity about nature for infinite lifetimes.
