These handsomely designed books mix appealing text, a wealth of full-color illustrations, and attractive sidebar material in eye-catching magazine-style layouts. Books are written on a popular young-adult level, and can be used as supplements to social studies texts in middle school and high school courses. From the eighth century B.C. until the fifth century A.D. Rome was the power center of the Western world. It started as a republic but by the time of Julius Caesar in the first century B.C. Rome was becoming an empire, dominating all Mediterranean lands, as well as much of Europe as far north as Britain.
This is one of many informational books John Guy has written about early civilizations. This particular book on Roman Life is overflowing with great information and pictures about life during the Roman Empire. It is easy to read, with excerpts about various subjects accompanying many gorgeous pictures about that topic on each page. Students could use this as a wonderful resource for information on the Romans and that time period, whether they want to know everything about the Romans, or about one specific area of study. This book would be a good starting point for their research. Because John Guy has written many books like this one, a student who really enjoys Roman Life could find many suggestions for future reading.
I would recommend this book for students in middle or high school. The text is brimming with excellent information, however, it was not written with young students in mind. It uses high level writing ideal for older students. In fact, this book would be a wonderful supplement to other texts high school students typically use that are full of good information, but have few pictures. It provides good information in a different format that would be refreshing for them to read.
