Very interesting read, but I don't like how it left out a lot of how Indigenous people and cultures were affected by invasion and colonisation.

This is a large format book with big ambition, to tell the history of the world in arresting images and short bursts of verbal language. It's not really for kids, I think, though my kids had some interest in paging through it. It's kind of an alternate history of the world, stopping along the way through dinosaurs, Vikings, Aztecs and spaceships. Wars make it into the picture, but artists, too. It looks at wars and disasters; introduces artists and the imagination. It ends with Charlie Hebdo (Je Suis Charlie), since he is an artist.

The point is that it is his, Goes', history of the world, wherein he gets to create this great landscape of space and time and color and historical occurrence and ordinary life and creativity. A tribute to the world. Maybe it is more for younger readers, because as Howard Zinn might observe over my shoulder, it is a pretty positive view of history, on the whole.

When I was reading it I was kind of reminded of Barry Lopez's observations about Inuit ideas about map-making and what matters to them vs. western (southern!) ideas of cartography, what "should" be in a map. Or Sara Fanelli's My Map Book; Sara was five when she made her maps, and she includes things like a map of her tummy and a map of my heart and a map of my room. Idiosnycratic. As if any map were "objective."

That said, I hate to say I didn't just consume it, or even particularly love it. I admire it, the ambition of it, and the achievement of it, and it is pretty cool, but I wasn't as engaged with it as I wanted to be. I like it a lot, still, and show it to a lot of people. It is visually striking. And has whimsy about it. Why mention soup cans, for instance, as a moment in history?

Here: This made me like it even more, as an object of art; it shows you the process Goes went through, with some really useful insights into how it came about:

Cel puțin a momentelor sale importante.

Good not great. The illustration is really superb, kind of a bit Guy Delisle with a smidge of Tom Gauld. But given the way the information is formatted and with children as the intended audience, there are bound to be weird omissions. If this is an area of interest to a kid (or a grown up), I would recommend some of the large-format books published by Big Picture Press, especially Maps and Welcome to the Museum: Historium.

Also, full disclosure, I saw someone was on the hold list ahead of me but it said check shelves and sniped it out from under them! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Starting with the Big Bang and the beginnings of our universe and ending with the turbulent 2010s with depictions of turbulence, disasters, assassinations, and street protests in support of freedom of speech, this oversize volume from New Zealand presents history in small bites of text and illustrations. Although each stop includes information about the political climate and government of the period, the author also spends time paying tribute to popular culture, including books, films, games, toys, music, sex symbols, and the increasing prevalence of technology. While the book is fun to read at one time or to dip in for browsing, it would be an excellent book for sharing with others to gain their perspective on the events that seem to have defined our times and theirs as well as history from long, long ago. Thinking about this from another way: What are the moments that have defined your life? Would they be the same ones that are depicted here? I've often thought it interesting how certain songs conjure up a particular decade in a way that nothing else can do. For instance, the Bee Gees' Saturday Night Fever album and the ubiquitous Fleetwood Mac attacks I suffered during that time will forever define the late 1970s for me. What song or film would define 2015? What is it that matters most to each of us? Teachers might enjoy having their own students fashion a similar book or artistic response to each year as it concludes, but it might be best to step back out of the way because there is likely to be little consensus.

I was immediately appealed by the gorgeous design of the book. There's just so much hidden in a single page, I think the author/illustrator even tells more with his beautiful illustrations than with his texts. It's amazing how such minimalistic drawings can express so much. just beautiful.

However to the content of the book, I dislike the choice of themes sometimes. The closer it gets to present, the more detailed it gets. It is very Europe-focused, even Belgium-focused which is a pity for a book that is translated to so many other parts of the world. It may be because the core target group is children, but many vents are displayed a bit too rosy (especially the colonial history and how colonists treated indigenous people).

Anyway, a beautiful book to browse in and digest the illustration work!

Otherwise known as: Mostly white folk throughout the years.

Don't get me wrong, this has great information and is visually appealing, but where the fuck is information about Native Americans other than "Oh yeah, they were driven out of their land, by the way." ?????

Also, I would definitely recommend this to a middle schooler. It's classified as juvenile in the library system, but there is no fucking way I would recommend this to anyone in elementary school. There's too much going on it and some of the vocabulary is too advanced.

W rysunki wpleciono teksty uzupełniające lapidarny opis epoki. Do tych tekstów to bym się jednak trochę przyczepił, zwłaszcza dodanie "polskiego kontekstu" nie do końca mnie przekonuje.

Bogactwo rysunku, istny “horror vacui”, kolorystyczna orgia (choć niezwykle przemyślana i konsekwentna) czynią z “Rzeki czasu” wielkie osiągnięcie sztuki ilustracji. Niestety teksty skierowane raczej do młodego odbiorcy mogą wprowadzić nabywców w błąd.

Timeline: A Visual History of Our World is a children's picture book written and illustrated by Peter Goes, which tells an abridged story about world history from the first signs of life three and a half billion years ago to the first decade of the twenty-first century with rather arty, creative, and imaginative illustrations.

The text is rather simple and straightforward. There is a paragraph for the two-page illustrations describing the particular time period in question, whether it a decade, century, event, or time period, the paragraph succinctly describes the time period in question. However there are some texts that are unconventional and meanders around the illustration which could be difficult to follow, although they are mainly facts. The illustrations are rather beautiful and flows rather well, like a breeze or more likely an explosion from the Big Bang opposite the title page.

The premise of the book is rather straightforward – it's a timeline of the world from the first signs of life three and half billion years ago to the first decade of the twenty-first century. It's a rather ambitious project to handle, while it's quite difficult to write a comprehensive and unabridged history of the world with eight hundred pages, no less eighty. For what is worth, Goes did a fairly good job at it.

All in all, Timeline: A Visual History of Our World is a wonderful children's book chronicling the history of the Earth from the first signs of life to the chaotic world we live in presently. I do, however, wish that Goes had ended the book with more than a modicum of hope.
