The day I stop getting excited about something new from Juliet Marillier is the day I start burning books. I KNOW HOW TO SPELL HER LAST NAME. From MEMORY.

A Marillier almost put me into a book slump. A Marillier. What even is life.

This was one of my top top anticipated reads of the year and yet.. I don't know what happened? Maybe this was a me thing, I don't know, but this just wasn't working me until the last 20%. I fully finished this with tears on my face so, like, what even?

There are plenty of lovely easter eggs for fans of the author's Blackthorn and Grim series and that was a delight. But the story itself, the plot, I just didn't find intere

I'm even more excited about this one after seeing this from Juliet Marillier in answer to a question about whether she'll write more Blackthorn & Grim stories:

The publishers didn't want a continuation of the series, but my new series, Warrior Bards, features the same setting and some of the same characters one generation on, so readers will find out what happened next for Blackthorn and Grim. The first book in the new series is The Harp of Kings, which comes out some time in 2019. Read the f

Liobhan and her brother Brocc are training on a warrior island. They are sent along with Dau on a mission to recover the Harp of Kings in time for the new king to be crowned. Of course, being a story from Marillier, supernatural things abound. It's full of Marillier's classic writing, and the characters are amazing, especially Liobhan. My only gripe is that I wish that Liobhan had more fight scenes, but Marillier has always been a bit more about the feelings.

I am so glad I didn’t read the Goodreads summary before I read the book. Basically spoils the first half of the book. If you want to be surprised, you probably won’t be reading reviews either, so my warning might not save anyone, but just in case. Also, I wrote most of this review while reading, so I’m going to give an overall-enjoyment

This is your next fun fantasy book to read!

The first in a new series, the story follows three trainees on their first spy mission while training with an ancient organization of fighters. Their mission: to find an ancient and revered harp in time for the king's coronation. Without the harp, the king will not be accepted by his people and his rule will be questioned. No pressure or anything!

The appointed leader, Liobhan, is strong, persistent, and clever. However, she is deeply flawed, as well a

This tale is the perfect high fantasy, with mystical druids, magical bards, and the convergence of two worlds through a ritual involving a missing harp. Three warriors are sent to find the harp: fierce Liobhan, stubborn Dao, and thoughtful Brocc, and their journey has the potential to change the fate of a nation. Marillier's storytelling is such a beautiful blend of lyrical prose and dynamic action; an irresistible combination for anyone who loves her other work.

MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF MY ALL LIFE.
It's the first time that Marillier is taking the point of view of a female warrior. Until now, all her heroines were healers, housewives, ladies, seers or witches (and I love them all). I love how Marillier brought in the fantasy genre domestic elements and feminine arts like weaving. Fantasy is generally a male genre in which heroines are expected to be warriors and reject anything labelled female, even basic emotions. But (almost?) twenty books later, I'm h

I've been waiting for this book for ages, so I was super excited to see it pop up for request on NetGalley. I'm happy to say that "The Harp of Kings" is pure Juliet Marillier. If you're familiar with her work then you'll recognize many of the story and character elements, but as always they are presented in a well written story steeped in Celtic mythology. This book takes place in the same continuity as the Blackthorn and Grim trilogy, but provides a complete

Marillier is an unfailing favorite, with her lush setting in ancient Ireland and fully fledged characters that face heart-rending decisions. This is a noteworthy beginning to a new series about a young woman who is both gifted musician and elite warrior.

I was excited to receive The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier as a Goodreads giveaway. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres, and this tale was well written and well paced.

The story is told in first person alternating between the perspectives of the three main characters: Liobhan, the daughter of a healer and a talented musician; Dau, son of a chieftain, who is troubled by his past; and Brocc, brother of Liobhan, a gifted singer and harpist. The tale opens on Swan Island where the three are livi

Review: I was reticent in requesting this novel, mainly because the description included the passage. “breaking her heart”. Fug. Anyhoo, I gave this a chance and am certainly glad I did. Not jumping up and down like Bill Clinton when he thought Hilary had won kind of giddy, just mildly pleased in places.

Besides the ghastly cover art, this was a novel rich in movement and varied in approach. Liobahn as a believable character, is not. I know, the author wants a strong female lead that

Harp of Kings is a well written story that would be great for lovers of medieval and Irish fantasy. The tone of this novel feels so ancient and grounded, making the story read smoothly and become engaging quickly. The plotting does feel slower, more character/internal feelings-heavy than any physical action. There is a ton of political scheming and layers upon layers of twists and reveals that are uncovered slowly and (mostly) successfully.
Harp of Kings is told in three different POVs: two sibli

Marillier is a truly gifted storyteller. There is something about her writing that seems to transcend time and space and speak to me the way an ancient myth might. What I mean is that her stories are accessible regardless of age or culture, like it is woven from the colle

Set in the mists of time in ancient Ireland, this is a new series by Juliet Marillier (read from an eARC from Netgalley). It follows 3 candidates (Liobhan, her brother Brocc and Dao) who wish to become trained warriors and spies. Juliet Marillier is a master storyteller, and she is once again in fine form with The Harp of Kings. While her books always weave in The Others to her story and imbue it with a literal sense of magic, the way she crafts a story brings emotion, depth and magic to what could be a simple tale on its surface. In Harp of Kings Liobhan and her brother Brocc are training at Swan Island with rival Dau when the three are summoned for a mission to infiltrate Breifne and search for the missing Harp of King ...more

Juliet Marillier is a rock star of the fantasy genre! Set in ancient Ireland, this novel follows the lives of three bard/warriors as they approach their first adventure together, solving the mystery of the vanished Harp of Kings. Juliet Marillier is an incredible storyteller. There’s no doubt about. I’ve loved her work since I first read Daughter of the Forest in high school, and I have become a lifelong fan. The Harp of Kings was no exception. For those who have read Marillier’s other series, Blackthorn and Grim, Liobhan and her brother, Brocc, are Blackthorn and Grim’s children. I quite enjoyed the references to the other series.

Liobhan, Brocc, and their fellow Swan Island trainee, Dau, take turns narrating the story.
