An excellent introduction to early Islamic history. It would be preferable to read this alongside some more detailed accounts from recent scholarship of the Khalifat al-Rashidun and the Umayyad dynasty but this book is excellent. Don't expect very much information on the Prophet Muhammad but do expect a clear description of the conflict between Ali and Mu'awiyya.
I am very impressed by M A Shaban's clarity and command in this book. Most importantly the Political and Economic activity of those times that formed events and later molding the complet history is so much interesting. The sources provided increases the authenticity of events provided. Its a very detailed history provided by Shaban... looking forward to read part 2.
