This volume provides an effective panorama of Fort Donelson and Shiloh, from both sides, of all ranks, and even civilians. This is a wonderful series.

I started to read this before taking a trip to the actual battlefield, but then have staggered it along with several other books on the battle both Historical Fiction and Non-fiction.
This book is actually an easy read and laid out in a way that you can’t help but get sucked into the actual letters and thoughts of those that fought in the battle, with plenty of pictures and brief histories of where you’re at in the battlefield’s timeline.
Fantastic - would recommend to history buffs.
