The importance of Raymond Roussel is pretty hot-shit to me. This collection of writings or short stories by the master is superb. The game-playing, the puzzles, and the almost presence of the French 'new novel' is all here in this work by the early 20th-century great figure.

A small collection of four short works (the title piece being the largest by far, taking up roughly half the pages and that includes the 17 page translator’s introduction) of which three are only now being made available in English through this collection. So that’s exciting.

The first two pieces are examples of Roussel’s limiting-form Textes-genèse which plays on the fact that words can have more than one meaning; in these works the opening set of words and closing set of words are textually
